    6. Thanks, it works.
Both 01:00 and 01:25 clear YC. Referee didn't want to send off a player in first half in a so important game, I can't think different.
Second goal is irregular, clear foul. VAR did its work, referee confirmed his idea. You can say that he has great personality for doing that (resisting to pressure without changing idea), but actually this was a mistake.

    1. At the 2nd handball incident, his hand is not touching the ground at the moment of contact, so it's not supporting. Penalty kick

      Delete
    2. IMO, it is sufficient that the arm is there to support. Touching the ground is not necessary and therefore no penalty is correct.

Handball 1) no penalty is the better decision, but penalty would not be completely wrong, if you argue, that it was deliberate.

For the free kick execution, play on is OK, because the opponent is moving away from the ball.

Both stamps are accidental IMO, but the second one should be a YC for a reckless foul (and maybe SPA anyway).

      Delete
    3. Thanks for the opinions. The calls regarding handballs were: 1) play-on, 2) penalty. None of the stamps was deemed as deliberate and no card was shown.

      1/ Play on
2/ Penalty kick. Meanwhile, any defending player should know that it is a real risk for handball offence if you tackle in such a manner

      Both YC.

  8. OT: Serdar Gözübüyük contacted a Dutch author (Robert Vuijsje) to work on a biography to be released in early spring 2020. Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad reported that Vuijsje in a radio interview on Saturday spoke about this biography.

"This week I started to work on a new non-fiction book together with Serdar Gözübüyük, the only non-authochthon referee in the Netherlands."

Gözübüyük asked the author to write a book about him. "This season he expects to become the youngest referee in Champions League. He already was the youngest referee in Eredivisie and there's an interesting story there."

"He's of Turkish origin - and the players all are of different origins. However the authorities in the top, such as referees, chairmen and other managers are not. For that reason he is like a pioneer."

The book will be worked on in the next period. "We will meet a number of times and I join him to his matches several times. He said I'll have the opportunity to accompany him anywhere."

For all readers understanding Dutch, here's the link to the newspaper article:

    1. Is it me or are Dutch referees more busy writing books than focussing on their refereeing these days...?
Remarkable also that Serdar seems to have appointed himself more or less to a Champions League match this season, while his most recent performances would hardly allow for a Champions League debut.
I can’t see how committee appreciates these kinds of statements.

  9. Interesting to see that a referee comes with a biography when you are just at the beginning of your career and not yet at the top. It's common to do this at the end of a (long) career. I don't think this is a clever idea. Besides this, with his age of 33 years old he will definitely not be the youngest in the UCL. There were some other referees who were younger when they made their UCL debut.

    1. These current referees were younger:

    2. Probably he won't even be the youngest in this season with Kabakov and Jovanovic being younger (and more likely to be appointed...)

      Delete
    3. If I'm not wrong, Kabakov had already his CL debut.

    4. Yes, he did have it - but I don't see the contradiction to my statement.

  10. Interesting refereeing in Lokomotiv Plovdiv-Spartak Trnava. Excellent moving, crucial decisions. The game was up and down.I was at the stadium. 4 appeals for penalty. correct disciplinary actions. good level of fouls. The team was from cyprus.I can't find full highlights of the match. If anyone can help

  11. I agree with you.Very difficult decisions for the referee from cyprus.
Penalty or no penalty for you?

    1. IMO penalty should've been given as there seems to be a contact with attacker's left knee.

    2. I agree with Mhmd S. AlKhalifi, penalty to be given. I have the feeling that Christofí detected the careless trip (he is about to whistle it), but then doubts his perception and awards a goalkick.

Did he have a good match? I saw him as a referee with a quite big potential.

      Delete
    3. yes, that's a clear penalty. maybe hard to spot but since he awarded a goal kick, he must have seen that attacker played the ball and not the defender. so probably for him it wasnt just enough for a penalty.

      Delete
    4. I believe simulation, small contact but the aim of the attacker is clearly known as exaggeration and PK researched. I would preferred very strong body language rather than a yellow card for simulation. You can see the player's arms on the air which is clear sign of simulation. I saw 8 minutes highlights. i will make another post with minutes on video.

      0:32(correct no offside call)
      3:10- 37' minute penalty-IMO correct NO YC
5:47 - PENALTY-SIMULATION- IMO play on the better choice
6:12 - penalty awarded -IMO correct YC since it is pushing on a SPA
6:42 - YC missed -IMO Assistant's responsibility- HAND in the face

  13. Kairat vs Hapoel Beer-Sheva
Seems like Hobber Nielsen lost it at last minutes. Kairat's #7 received a second YC but wasn't sent off, and a few minutes after clear goal was disallowed for HBS.

  16. Horrific scenes in Romania, where Arnold Hunter has been hit byfirework, after a massconfrontation.

Really terrible to see. Ambulanceon the pitch for him. He is bleeding. This is really, really terrible.

For the rest, he did a very good job in a very difficult match.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Really terrible scenes, but Hunter has been forced to go on, handed out 2 cards (without having seen it) and fourth official seems to have tk take over, but he is reluctant. Makes sense, its a terrible match and he is young and unexperienced.

Now unbelievable scenes with the Hungarians complaining.

  18. Some images of Hunter incident. Shocking to see after last year Swedish AR Fredrik Klyver being hurt by a bottle in Sturm Graz-AEK Larnaca.

In normal conditions the match should have been terminated, but you know, 2nd leg, not enough free days to resume it...

  19. To be honest, I don't understand UEFA. Similar situation to what happened one year ago with the Swedish assistant referee, game had to be resumed, now it seems the same must happen?
Is that so difficult to stop the game and give a 3-0 win to the other team? Can we accept that? I really don't understand.
But also I'm astonished in front of such situations many calls, observers and delegates don't know what to do, is that a so difficult decision? Isn't safety of referees and players the first and most important thing? Still, I renounced to understand. This is a story going on by years, you will remember Aytekin in Montenegro. Why games should always continue is a big mystery.

  21. Some clarifications about the Craiova - Honved incidents

    - the referee was hit by a lighter. The firecracker did not hit him, it exploded about 2 meters behind him
    - no one looked to force Hunter to go on, it looked like it was his decision. He showed 2 yellow cards, then ran away to the locker room after a couple of minutes of no play.
    - The referee Observer came down on the pitch and was filmed talking on the phone for several minutes - presumably informing someone from UEFA about the incidents and possibly waiting for instructions.

Game has been finally resumed after a 20 minute break, with the Fourth official replacing Hunter, and it will conclude with a penalty shoot-out.

    1. Still unacceptable to continue this game if you ask me...

    2. I think they decided to continue for the safety of the referees. With a packed stadium in Craiova (who are known as one of the fiercest crowds in Romania), it would been very difficult for the refs to leave the stadium safely, if they had terminated the game.

    3. Then it is simple: the club should never play European football ever again.

  22. So, at the end Craiova-Honvéd continued with 4th official, with a the home team winning at penalty shootout.

      → 3:05 - penalty for FCSB, I think it's a soft penalty, contact is minimal and FCSB striker had already crossed the ball;

      → 6:56 - 100% correct red card, but the foul for me is clearly outside the box. RC and free-kick would have been the correct decision;

→ 12:05 - RC for Alashkert for elbowing, looks to be a correct decision

    2. 3:05 late tackle on the attacker Achilles
6:56 from this side camera, you can see and judge only left hands(arm)of both players, but what you can say about right hands of both players?I saw a picture and there is holding of defender finishing in PA with his right hand(camera from behind of steaua goal)
      12:05 crystal clear red card

  25. Some matches with a lot of cards yesterday:

    Ljubljana-Yeni (Filip Glova) 13 YC / 1 RC - 7 YC in first half
    Karint-Hapoel (Ola Hobber) 11 YC / 3 RC
    Craiova-Budapest (Hunter) 10 YC
AEL Limassol-Aris (Manuel de Sousa) 12 YC / 1 RC - 8 YC in first half
    Esbjerg-Soligorsk (Duje Strukan) 10 YC
    Sheriff-Partizani (Igor Pajač) 10 YC
    Vaduz-Videoton (Lukjančukas)10 YC / 1 RC
    Apollon Limassol-Shamrock (Michael Tykgaard) 10 YC / 2 RC
    Spartak Trajava-Plovdiv (Erik Lambrechts) 9 YC / 1 RC

Of course, some of the games went into extra time. It could though be interesting to get some videoclip and comments.

    1. For Ljubljana-Yeni Turkish team start from 5.minute with extreme protesting of 5-6 players pushing referee, arguing, gesticulating, overall totally unacceptable. But referee did not card for that so the game unfortunately went to war on the field with no fair play and compensation decisions from Glova. I was really surprised with such provocative behavior. Next round game Partizan vs . Yeni will needed really experience referee team.

  26. PROGRÈS NIEDERKORN - RANGERS FC
    Referee: Ivaylo Stoyanov (Bulgaria)

Overall a good performance in a normal match by the Bulgarian refereeing team, led by Ivaylo Stoyanov. Some moments should be taken under consideration:

=> Two situations in the penalty area to be watched: in 38’, Rangers were claiming for a penalty, but Stoyanov waved play on. No further protest by the Scottish confirms the decision made by the Bulgarian referee. In 89’ another penalty appeal by Rangers is correctly waved away, since the ball was clearly played. The firm and strong body language used by Stoyanov to decide for a corner kick was the perfect way to sell this (correct) decision.

=> Disciplinary action was good: Stoyanov decided to open the cards quite early at 9’, by booking RAN31 for an SPA-esque foul. The whistle was delayed, and only came once AR1 flagged (foul happened in front of him). Caution was not mandatory IMO, as the fouled player had no control of the ball (ball still in the air, coming from a long pass), making it not really a promising attack, but rather more a simple careless challenge. Card was supportable though, I understand the decision made by Stoyanov: once the fouled player would control the ball, the foul would automatically be a mandatory SPA:YC decision. Two other cautions were correctly issued in 49’ for PRO31 (SPA) and in 62’ for RAN37.

=> Self-presentation: Stoyanov presented himself as pretty distant from the players (keeping constantly a certain amount of space between him and players e.g. at set pieces). That approach succeeded as the referee was respected and accepted by both sides. He proved as well to be VERY preventive, he sprinted towards the players which he felt were about to start a confrontation. This shows that Stoyanov is not a referee who is reacting, since sprinting at a scene helped him to dismantle a potential confrontation before it could even start. Very much appreciated!

=> Both assistant referees and fourth official executed their duties on expected level.

Overall, the Bulgarian refereeing team can be satisfied with their work in this match, having met all the requirements needed. Good job!

  27. Well, THREE of four penalties of Budapest Honvéd FC should've been repeated due to GK's encroachment. Possible fear of AR1 after the previous incident? IMO, the Romanian club should've been dismissed from UEFA competitions but as the game was finished...

    1. Very soft penalty whistled to ARIS, attacker was very clever here, however not a crucial mistake. The last replay is the best to judge the contact. I think that referee would have taken a different decision in case of video analysis.
But then in 59', if the previous situation was penalty, this must be penalty as well. Defender makes a similar movement to the one made by keeper in 12'...
