  1. Italian show?

Guida and di Bello poor referees.
Sozza i dont know, but Rosetti is not the man to do this job.

Collins had already said that the referees from italy not on a high level is right now.
He dont select a Italian or two for the WC2026

    1. Hmmm, I think RvT has a point with the first line (Guida and Di Bello aren't poor referees though!).

One must say though that Italian referees are, from top five leagues, by far the most ready to officiate hotter clashes in general. Also it really should be noted that Rosetti is not the first Italian refereeing director at UEFA to act like this: Franchi and even Collina (I remember Banti was 'flown in' to replace a different referee to handle a Crvenazvezda-Ludogorets tie in the time when only 1st officials were taking charge of CLQR3) behaved in exactly the same way.

By far the most interesting question of these games to me is about Sozza.

    2. You have a lot of referees in top elite and first category...
      10 matches 3 italian.

Sorry this is not good work from Rosetti. He has his country favors.
The gap after Orsato is big in italy, but that is not his problem.

  3. Sozza is a good referee, but very early in his career with really top games. I am not sure about Marco Di Bello refereeing such a decisive game.

  6. About Orsato:

It will be a collaboration. Nothing more. And all of it, remotely. Watching videos, advice, opinions, corrections: and it will last until December. Daniele Orsato, 48 years old, referee who recently retired from the activity (Atalanta-Fiorentina last in Serie A, England-Switzerland last in Europe) and having resigned from Can A and B, will collaborate with the Rfu, the Russian football federation . But what is it really about?

Daniele Orsato will not go to Russia or elsewhere but has accepted a sort of consultancy together with a small group of expert referees to offer improvements and advice to the referees who go on the field in the Russian championship. He will look, evaluate, advise: not a designator, not a VAR but simply one of the consultants. “The Italian Daniele Orsato has joined the Commission of experts and referees of the Russian Football Federation (RFU). In the next few weeks, the man from Schio will decide what to do: there are those who would have wanted him on the field for another year in Serie A or as a Can C designator, all hypotheses rejected. Being part of the Committee of experts for the RFU, a role for which consent was requested to Italian Association, is like being part of a Technical Sector seen like a sort of Council of the great wise men. And it will be until December. Then he will decide his future: some would even see him as president of the Association, but that's another story...

    1. Still, for me unacceptable decision to join a commission of the Russian Football Federation. Of course, he can do whatever he wants to, but we‘re allowed to criticise his decision. Does he care about his reputation and integrity?

    2. @Ref_1707 With all respect, please keep your opinion on your mind, I know your tendencies and I don't want to talk about political position on this referee forum. Don't talk about integrity if you only see from one side and stay silent when Israeli referees still in charge. Just please keep your double standard for yourself.
There are Cuneyt Cakir, Nestor Pitana, Orsato, and Irmatov. How dare you to question their integrity? You must separate football and political position.

      Delete
    3. @Juan I don't think it is necessarily a political opinion to question whether it's right or wrong to join a federation that has been banned by FIFA and UEFA. Even if I personally think many of their decisions taken on a daily basis is wrong, in many cases I still believe we have to respect their integrity as football's governing bodies and that their decisions also should be respected. Maybe it's still not a discussion that belongs on this forum, though...

      Delete
    4. Yes I agree this not discussion on referee forum, but indeed it was complicated and I just try to short it, you can freely talk about "integrity" when if 1 referees go there, but there are 5 well known referees, there is final WC referee, 2 times SF WC referee, and then UCL final referees work "only" as consultant there, could you still ask their integrity? What's wrong here? None.

      Delete
    5. Juan, yes, I personally do question the integrity of the other referees too. As Elliot mentioned, Russian Federation was (rightly) banned by UEFA. I don‘t have to mention the circumstances, a UEFA member state being attacked by Russia. Indeed, it is a football blog, so I don‘t want to dive in too deep. Still, we speak about a world class referee who decided to give priority to his own interests, knowing the full backstory of the country he will work with. This impacts my view on Orsato‘s character. For others, it won‘t.

      Delete
    6. I think Elliot was right this is not necessarily political position opinion to take general opinion for this case. I don't know why we must take a right or left position, right or wrong. This is simply not a yes or no question, too naive if you said that. Impacts your view on Orsato characters? Is up to you. This world are not rotating on you.
My last question to Ref_1707 and Elliot, is it banned association can't work as best as they can?
My opinion who are you? And who would guaranteed the life of the staff of association, the dream of innocent Russian kids on football, on UEFA campaign about how to be a referee if the banned association prohibited from all activities? Why Miranchuk still could go to MLS? I think both of you need to go to philosophy class :)

      Delete
    7. I'm not sure how a philosophy class would help as there are multiple different philosophies that might have different answers to the questions you just asked. I also think it's hard to compare Russian kids who just happened to be born there with Orsato who comes from outside and has a choice, for me that's not really relevant to this question

      Delete
    8. In philosophy when you have in doubt and then that's it. Well played Elliot.

  8. We have two very crucial incidents in Fernabahçe - Lille, extra times.

Straight red card, for SFP absolutely correct decision: https://dubz.co/c/d612c8

Penalty after OFR, handball, particular position of the player committing the offense, but still correct I think:
    https://dubz.link/c/ae1d56

I think the Spanish referee should refrain from making such hysterical movements like the one before issuing the red card. Very often, he doesn't appear calm and it can look like he can't bear pressure. This can make games even more challenging.

    1. In my opinion the foul can be easily assessed as careless. Nothing more. A clear crucial mistake, as you said, result of perception (decision a bit late, I think he was not in the frontal position to see where and how much arm hit close to opponent's head). Easy to explain, but unluckily for him, VAR can do nothing.

      Delete
    2. From the way the Kyiv player reacts it's as if he's been elbowed in the face, which the referee has bought as surely he cannot see the contact from the side-on angle...

  13. FC Twente - RB Salzburg:
46' The 1-3 goal minute was suspected to be offside.

According to Ricky van Wolfswinkel, the referee said there had been a temporary issue with VAR communication in the second half due to the weather.

The VAR check on this goal took a long time to complete, and while he believes it was probably restored and checked correctly (he said: "I don't think they're going to gamble with that at this level."), but there was no image of the two lines on tv broadcast, nor was there any image from the 16-meter line camera.

There have been a lot of technical issues with VAR communication in the Netherlands since last weekend, which has caused a bit of a headache.

    1. From TV pictures I was rather sure, it was offside. And I wondered, why there was no camera shot from 16m line or any graphical dissolution.

  14. Scots are and will be very angry on Guida. Such a big mistake that costs Rangers millions of euros. Guida simply wasn't smart - he couldn't see the elbowing (there wasn't any), but allowed himself to give second YC.

    1. Guida is a poor referee. This is not his level.
Stay domestic and whistle theorie in the Serie A but not in Europe.
I saw the mistake and my opinion about him is still the same... poor poor referee.

      Delete
    2. More than Scots should be angry with a horrendous decision made by Guida in match of this stature.
Every referee worldwide should feel distraught that a fellow referee could make an error so horrendously incorrect especially one who is officiating in UEFA's major competition.
I have watched Guida officiating in other fixtures and my opinion has not altered. He is not fit for the job as a match referee either in Serie A or in Europe.

  15. After having carefully reflected on his new role in Russia, Daniele Orsato changed his mind and refused the proposal. He had initially accepted also in the name of a friendship with Milorad Mažić.

To be honest, Orsato doesn't seem to have very clear ideas about what to do.

  16. FC Steaua Bucharest - Sparta Prague (ref. Morten Krogh - DEN)

Very intense game in Bucharest, especially in the second half. Krogh in my opinion had a rather poor game - even if there were no major errors, all 50/50 decision were taken in favor of the away team, which inflamed the atmosphere especially in the final 10 minutes.

    Significant events:
    Min 27' - penalty for Sparta Prague, correct decision IMO, home team defender with a late headed challenge, hitting an opponent in the back of his head;

Min 29' - missed foul for FCSB right outside the 16-yard box & completely incorrect YC for home team #27 for diving.

Min 50' - textbook YC missed for Preciado (Sparta Pr.) for a sliding tackle foul for behind. It would have been his 2nd YC of the game. Sparta coach substituted the player 3 minutes after, realizing he was lucky not to be sent off.

Min 60' - very good no intervention at the 1-3 goal - Sparta player #14 simulated a foul after being dispossessed.

Min 90+4 - clear corner kick missed for FCSB when they were pushing for the equalizer. Not a major error in essence, however a big mistake in the game context which relieved the pressure from the away team and basically safeguarded the win.

Also the added time management was "convenient" for the away team - only 5 minutes in the 2nd half, considering there were 4 substitution breaks, 1 cooling break of two minutes and other time wasting periods from the away team.

Krogh was also very strict with dissent, the home team receiving 3 YC for that, even though the protests were justified as they were results of his obvious mistakes!

An uninspired choice by UEFA in my opinion to appoint the Dane, especially after the very poor performance by Saggi in the first leg, and considering also that Sparta Prague have a Danish coach and 3 Danish players in their lineup.

But the same can be said for quite a few countries.
      Hungary, nobody since Viktor Kassai
      Greece, nobody since Kyros Vassaras
Austria, nobody since Benkö and Plautz
Belgium, nobody since Frank De Bleeckere

Okay, referees are human beings and can see things wrongly, but to make a pure 'guess' as he did is not easy to accept. In my opinion Jefte never even committed a foul there!

Not a good start as Italian no.1 for Guida.

    4. It is also possible that this was called by AR, indeed. I thought the same, otherwise it's valid what Mikael said, for sure, the process of decision making, if directly by Guida, for such important call, is absolutely a risk, never to do!

  18. I’m just curious whether or not a match deciding error has consequences for Guida. As mentioned above, this is about a lot money - probably at least 5 million EUR.

Some referees are instantly sidelined after a poor game (Jovanovic, Peljto, Manzano, Siebert etc).

But being the Italian #1, it can be different. There is more into the political “game”, particularly after Orsato was mistreated. Rosetti is known for his consolidating behavior, tries to keep everybody happy (eg Schärer supercup after not the greatest EURO, Turpin UCL final after a shitty EURO, etc). So I won’t be surprised when Guida gets a play-off (Europa League to recover?), and then instantly will be appointed in UCL groupstage again …

  21. Please find below some incidents from Simone Sozza game, Ludogorets - Qarabag.
Despite of final score (all came out only during extra times), very challenging game, as one could have expected after first leg, and very open for the regular 90 minutes.
In terms of control and disciplinary, I think he did well.
At the end the final score says that Bulgarian side has nothing to discuss about.
Focus on the first penalty of the game, missed live, but not easy situation, in my opinion correct VAR intervention, but I would blame Sozza for the missed card, once keeper commits that action, punching on head the opponent, must be booked, hard to assess it as careless, even though one can understand why keeper fouls are always seen as "different" from other players.
The second penalty is an OK decision, probably a very correct one for most of people, correct by VAR to support, but for my taste here the attacker was very clever and rather used the situation. OK, he wanted to reach the ball, but easy then to come in contact with opponent's tackle and to get a foul (not a full contact, if you ask me). But surely a situation in which you can hardly question the referee live, you can easily perceive the full penalty impression.
Some moments in which he could have jumped more in the game, for sure (see the management clip), but I think overall his presence was felt by players. Also, some cards for protests / dissenting gestures.
