Massa, after his NED vs GER Nations League game, now gets Feyenoord-Leverkusen. He will meet at least 3 players again within 10 days. Avoidable.
ReplyDeleteTurpin in a game that is expected to be football focused. Honestly I’d like to see him in something different; e.g. heated or rough games. Turpin has a good reputation and should be capable to referee anything.
Lindhout was predicted here. It is worth mentioning that the referee crews of Lindhout and Makkelie are the same as last weekend, domestically, when they both worked with the same AR’s, 4O and VAR. Is that a common thing in other countries as well?
Lindhout, who by his performances should actually have been demoted to the second category rather than pushed further by UEFA, making his CL debut in a game like Monaco-Barca is disappointing to me even in the new climate.

Let me first say, I don’t understand the management of Dutch referees at all.
Gözübüyük was promoted to Elite not based on skill, but because Kuipers left an empty spot after his retirement.
Lindhout had a long path before his promotion to Category 1. Three years ago, and during the Mentor Talent program (I believe he was coached by an Italian), he improved his body language and player management significantly. At the end of season 2021, he was 2nd after Makkelie imo in domestic league. But his rise stagnated after the EURO -21. He comes across as a very modest guy, and prefers to be a background-minded referee. He has some interesting skills, e.g. excellent fitness and his advantage is next level. And he improved his player management, thus it might be interesting to see him in a competition/climate where players are more technical. But yes, in my opinion, Lindhout is a decent category 1 referee, but nothing more than that.
Furthermore, there is Vd Eijk, Kooij and Nagtegaal in Category 2. To me, it is clear who has the most potential based on SKILLS (Marc Nagtegaal), but KNVB for some reason started to focus on Joey Kooij first. He had the most experience domestically. Then, Kooij was injured and all of a sudden the focus shifted to Vd Eijk. I don’t understand why… They just seem to “stick” to the order of experience and who was first promoted to the FIFA list, and they don’t care about skills. Marc Nagtegaal had a good game in 2nd qualifier round, and you would expect him to get another game after that. But instead, they had to push Vd Eijk and Lindhout. Makkelie wasn’t assigned to a play-off because KNVB had just two spots. They decided to push Lindhout in a final test and consolidated Kooij after his injury. To keep Makkelie happy, they assigned him to the Classico (which wasn’t played due to a strike). And Gözübüyük got a game in Nations League.
Talking about Makkelie, who was used many times in, let’s call it, the sensitive/challenging games (where any kind of controversy is “deathly”), without being rewarded. I think the reason why Makkelie was never considered for any UEFA finals after 2020 is mainly a political reasons - and has nothing to do with PSG - but rather Kuipers handling the EURO 2021 (and Makkelie in a semi). After EURO 2021, Rosetti could simply say to KNVB: sorry my friends, you’ve had enough for now. Rosetti had to consolidate other FA’s, like he always does, e.g. Turpin the UCL final in 2022 after a hidden path, and completely ignored a Makkelie in his prime. The 2024 UCL final was booked for Vincic, as long as he didn’t do something stupid, already before the winter break. Just like Soares Dias’ Conference League final. And so was Vincic’ SF at the EURO after his MD2 game. That is how it works, unfortunately. They just care about their own high position and “keeping everybody happy” (ask Boban…), in particular the big 5 countries.

DeleteOne can forgive the U21s disaster, s**t happens (especially when there isn't var), though one must say he was fairly fortunate that this didn't really cost him. What really rubbed me up the wrong way was games last season like the PAOK-Pao semifinal where his performance was genuinely ridiculous (so bad was it that even the Greeks rejected him). Handling games a la 'Velasco-in-Brazil' should NOT be a thesis for rising up the merit list.
That all being said: I wish him well on Thursday for a good debut with Sajn.

DeleteI don't want to seem like a guy with an agenda, but I would like to put on the record that I disagree with the pushing of Ivan Kruzliak by UEFA that is evidently occurring. In my book, he was weakest of the 19 referees in the last Euro: the Slovakian never seems able to get the games under his 'grasp', trying to overcompensate for that by exaggerated body language (ScoSui) or not being able to keep a consistent line (NedAut) for the 90min. It was quite strange to me that he suddenly appeared as fourth official for quarterfinal and semifinal matches at that tournament, especially when it seemed UEFA had taken a different decision about Kruzliak earlier in the tournament.
ReplyDeleteAppreciate that new names are necessary and Letexier/Scharer/Nyberg and now Eskas (to a lesser extent Meler) are making good progress, but in the instance of this specific referee, it feels rather 'forced' to me.
A better choice, imo, would be to rehabilitate (for instance) Joao Pinheiro instead.
