    2. It will be interesting, lots of pressure on Pinheiro here and just like USA-BEL match, there will be a microscope placed on all of his decisions here after the ARG-EGY match. Best of luck to the match officials today.

    1. I wouldn’t say SPA but definitely allowing the ARG to continue the holding with different defenders all to continue holding. He just punishes it with a careless free kick without player management which means it continues and the behaviour doesn’t change.

  6. I haven’t watched this match as closely but no drama or controversial decisions. The early goal for Argentina has made things calm for him early in the match.

A YC for SUI att against ARG def, hard to judge as I haven’t seen much of the first half. Certainly I feel for him because none of the holding is being appropriately managed and therefore continues without punishment without management or cards.

  7. Definitely a poor first half from Pinheiro. I don't think he was the best choice for this match. Terrible foul detection and far too lenient when it comes to issuing yellow cards and maintaining control of the game. The Argentine player is hacking away relentlessly, yet only receiving verbal warnings. A yellow card was finally shown to Embolo in the 44th minute for severe dissent, but the Argentine #6 deserved one too for repeated fouls—and yet the Portuguese ref is acting like everything is fine! No convincent performance so far.

  11. Is there any rule by wich you can't book Argentinian players?

This is getting way too scandalous now. They keep committing fouls, they're holding Switzerland back unfairly and they aren't being properly punished for it.

The Swiss, on the other hand, have very little tolerance and are issued a yellow card for the very first foul. It's crystal clear why other referees refused to officiate this game and why Colina sent this pawn to do the job. Collina lost every sense of shame and every ounce of credibility he's built over the years.

    1. Messi reminded the ref about this, at 30 min ..then ever since in the first half all calls favored Argentina

      Delete
    2. Is there a rule by which the referee can't issue a yellow card for the first foul if it is warranted? (it was in this case a reckless challenge).
Stats also show it's 7 Argentina fouls to 12 Switzerland, and one of the Swiss players has committed the most fouls (3).

      Delete
    3. You definitely need a pair of glasses or a clinic on refereeing.

Are you seeing Paredes' behaviour? He’s already committed two fouls, each of which warranted a yellow card—in other words, he could have already been sent off. Just to give an example.

The point here is the inconsistent officiating, with undeniable favoritism toward Argentina.

The yellow card given to the Swiss player was for a foul that wasn’t even remotely severe, especially considering the referee’s generally lenient stance toward fouls.

      Delete
    4. Absolutely, Jordan.

Pinheiro has changed his line after getting chewed out by Messi.

What a humiliation right on the grandest stage, but unfortunately that’s exactly what pawns are for.

      Delete
    5. Sorry my friend, better check the statistics, at minute 30 we had 8 fouls to arg and only 2 to sui after messi speak with ref 5 fouls to each team, so your theory is wrong.

      Delete
    6. Also about yellow cards 15 Sui 22’ holding could get YC and 10 Sui 28’ reckless escape to YC

      Delete
    7. Well, you didn't counter my point.

I'm talking about the disciplinary ruling, which, as always, favors Argentina.

  12. I actually liked Pinheiro's performance in first half. Seems a bit lower treshold for fouls than usual at this tournament, but same high one regarding cards. That being said I thought he was consistent throughout first half and also very important, much better body language than what we are used to from him

  13. Early (!) predictions:
    SEMIFINALS
France-Spain: Marciniak would be the obvious choice, but I have the feeling maybe CONMEBOL here…Sampaio?

England-Argentina: I’d like to see Makkelie here…Also can be Faghani.

    - My biggest question is about Ramos…Philipp mentioned that the Pacheco’s appointment as Pinheiro’s VAR right now could mean that he was planned for that game and I completely agree…Maybe we can see him as FO? But IDK.

3rd Place: Maybe CAF quota? Let see which CAF referee continues after the SF’s cut…Could be Omar or Ghorbal…

Final: Ismail Elfath…I don’t like it but there’s nothing we can do.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I would also like Makkelie for a possible Arg-Eng, but given the recent history between argentina and the netherlands (2014 and especially the battle of 2022) I doubt he willbe appointed there. But let's see!

  14. Very good first half from Pinheiro. Embolo's yellow card was mandatory. Martinez might also have warranted a card, given the string of fouls; in any case, there is absolute control over an easy match that has been well-officiated so far.

  28. The only problem with this decision for me is that if he do not give a YC to Paredes then there is no VAR intervention and for me that's not what VAR is for. Without the YC for the Arg player then Embolo is still on the field.

  30. What's sad....is if pinheiro correctly does NOT call anything, waves it off as nothing...no yellow/no var/ no 2nd yellow for embolo. And we can play on, with 11 v 11 in a game Switzerland was dominating

    1. So basically if the Swiss player's simulation wasn't so good then the referee wouldn't have been conned into giving a wrong yellow?

      Delete
    3. @vadcreferee and VAR only kicks in because of the yellow to Paredes which was an extremely odd decision given the way this tournament has gone and what he has allowed throughout this game.

Nightmare situation that should’ve never happened.

  33. In a tournament where in so many instances we have been looking for the YC to be issued… absolutely brutal scenario. I struggle to see, at speed on the replay, what warranted the caution in Pinheiro’s mind. His life would’ve been much easier without it. Was it support from AR1 and the 4th official that informed the decision? Regardless, it is going to be an interesting remainder of the match.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yeah, he created a nightmare by showing a caution on a nothing foul with the ball almost out of play. Tough break for the Swiss and it’s just gonna stir the conspiracy pot even more.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Or Embolo can complain about Pinheiro giving a YC to Paredes otherwise nothing will happen and the FK will have been taken without any problem.

      Delete
    2. I disagree, because a yellow should never have come out in the first place. That “foul” was just a run of the mill careless foul even if it was real.

Émbolos actions were bizarre, but that whole situation was created by a strange decision to show yellow to Paredes.

      Delete
    3. Sorry but if embolo didn’t simulate this situation doesn’t happen, so embolo is guilty

      Delete
    4. Funny that some people on here complained about Argentina not getting any yellows and when Parades does get one for a third foul (which a Swiss player made look worse) other people say it shouldn't be a yellow!

      Delete
  36. Remember Turpin was called for OFR for a push when no play yet the same VAR couldn't call Letexier for a very clear Push in the box before ARG third goal

  40. Everyone who defends that decision should be ashamed. In a WC where basically every 100% mandatory YC is just ignored or blatantly not given, you can not give a YC for such an incident in the midfield to a player who already was on a yellow. Also argentina should already have been booked, in which case that situation would never have happened. Scandalous.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. So basically you're defending players blatantly cheating like Embolo did. You think players should be allowed to dive in non-PK situations with no consequence

      Delete
  41. This is the best referee decision of the entire WC so far. It's so funny how people have complained forever how simulation ruins the sport and how much everyone wants more yellows for it. Hell, people even ask for divers to get red cards. Now you have the perfect scenario. A player egregiously CHEATS to get his opponent a completely undeserved yellow card, and yet now because his BLATANT CHEATING ended up getting him sent off, now people want their excuses about how the rule is too harsh, they need to make it to just cancel the yellow etc.

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with what Pinhiero did. And to those of you saying "Pinhiero shouldn't have given the yellow card to begin with", well he STILL should have given Embolo a yellow card anyway for DIVING. FOR CHEATING.

The best decision of the WC.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. `That is obviously not the ''best decision of the WC'' as it's coming from a big mistake, a ghost YC.
Agree for the simulation, but i don't think that would have been given without the ''mistaken identity'' protocol.

      Delete
  42. I agree that it is harsh that the whole intervention depends on the wrongly given YC to Paredes (who could have recieved YC on other occasions by the way), but Embolo has to blame himself. Being already booked it is very naive to dive like this.

    ReplyDelete
  43. CK missed, once again IFAB need to change the VAR protocol quickly imo, it's not understandable to have the possibility to correct a wrongly given CK but not a wrong goal kick.

    ReplyDelete
  44. This may be Pinhiero's last WC

    ReplyDelete
  45. We had faghani announce mbappe initiated contact and not give him a card. Its tiny switzerland so nobody cares right?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah but that was clearly a wrong announcement. He clearly did not initiate contact. We all have eyes. Faghani was just too arrogant. He might think it's not enough for a foul (and he is wrong, it was a clear penalty, in that play Mbappé actually didn't try to dive or look for the contact at all), but Mbappé did not initiate the contact.

      Delete
    2. Do alireza tell you that? We all have ears and heard what he said. Based off his interpretation mbappe should have been booked.

      Delete
  46. I am very conflicted by this incident and nothing to do with conspiracies.

In the first case, you must say that it is a textbook situation for Pinheiro. I wasn’t quite happy with his positioning or how quickly he got to the incident however, it looked like a foul (soft foul live). After all the rough treatment that Embolo received during the game, I’m not surprised he went down looking to try and embellish contact to get a YC for his opponent.

Correct OFR for simulation, the fact that he left his leg and and the fact that the Argentinian player never made any movement to call it a foul. This is a textbook scenario for simulation and a yellow card must have been shown.

    The conflict for me:
    - Embolo had been given rough treatment all game, after the way the Arg did the exact same embellishment he felt that’s what he needed to do in order for the referee to show a card.
    - Had he not felt he needed to embellish contact, he wouldn’t be looking to act this way. It was born of frustration and there would be no dive and no second yellow.
    - How many times have we seen referees not give yellow cards for simulation? We thought they weren’t using the UEFA guidelines but maybe they are? I guess we can argue that there was a clear movement to stick his leg backwards to initiate so it was clear simulation. I still feel during this tournament we have seen many referees not reach into their pocket for situations of simulation. Maybe because it was a VAR intervention he had to? Whereas others had been on field, so no? I’m not sure, conflicted

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. So in other words, you're defending Embolo's cheating and blaming Pinhiero for "making" Embolo cheat

      Delete
    2. I appreciate this analysis as it acknowledges that there is nuance to this decision that ultimately becomes purely technical. It is not a matter of defending “cheating” in the game, but rather whether the laws and its protocols are aligned with the spirit of the game. I don’t think anyone is trying to defend Embolo’s actions, which were poorly thought out to put it mildly, but context certainly matters.

      Delete
    3. I’m not defending Embolo cheating but I can emphasise with the situation he found himself. It leaves me feeling conflicted. From a Pinhiero perspective, it isn’t to do with him, this is to do with the directives to implement the FIFA philosophy.

This style of refereeing does tend to favour the teams who are more physical but it comes at a cost to teams wanting to play football. The constant holding and physical nature of the challenges were left unchecked, leaving a very frustrated player.

      Delete
    4. If Pinheiro was to rescind the yellow card from Paredes, then he could only do so if there was clear simulation from Embolo. By definition that's a yellow card offence.

There's no middle ground. If there wasn't simulation then it would remain a foul and Parades would keep his yellow card.

      Delete
    5. Thank you @vadcreferee that’s what I was trying to convey

      Delete
    6. @Nightwing yes, once the card is shown it was always going to end with Embolo sent off. My issue is with the decision to show yellow to Paredes. That decision was just strange.

      Delete
    7. Yes @Nightwing which is why I said that it was a textbook application of LOTG and Pinheiro can’t be faulted. Once he got called for OFR, there was only one outcome.

      Delete
    8. @WisconsinRef I sort of feel that it was just the accumulation of fouls on Embolo that he finally felt like he needed to draw a line in the sand in terms of managing the match. When you combine this with the fact of the player reaction and the appearance of the contact from behind, then the initial decision makes sense.

      Delete
    9. There's also the possibility that there had been a bit of chatter in the lead up to challenge and Pinheiro wanted to nip it in the bud.

      Delete
  47. I'm sorry, failing to identify a dive is not "Mistaken Identity". The ref did not mistake someone else for Paredes. Therefore, factually, as far as the English language goes, that's not acceptable.

I don't care about some shady instructions from FIFA (to favour USA and Argentina it seems), call it something else if you want to allow VAR to review this. But it's very stupid to review dives only if the opponent got a yellow card.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeh I agree, the text of the "mistaken identity" rule that allows var to get involved says that you can't determine whether a different offence has occurred I thought. I'm wondering whether this is going to happen now in domestic leagues as well.

      Delete
    2. I actually think that this is a great thing to add to the VAR protocol but i still not understand why they are calling it ''mistaken identity''

      Delete
    3. d. Mistaken identity (red or yellow card)

If the referee penalises an offence but has clearly misidentified the player who committed that offence, only the identity of the offender can be reviewed.

From the VAR protocol from LOTG

      Delete
    4. I think it's because they have poor English, and they probably make too many decisions without thinking them through properly and without consulting enough people so that someone that has a good command over the English language can find the problem.

      Delete
    5. Because the VAR protocol originally only allowed for yellow cards to be reviewed where the referee had booked the wrong player (identical twins playing on the same team would be the text book example). That particular protocol has now been expanded to include yellow cards that have been awarded to the wrong team but it's kept its original title

      Delete
    6. Not the first time it’s happened (when you look at the handball law with the consideration of playing a ball directly from your teammate but that wording isn’t included in the LOTG).

      Delete
  48. Isn't it kind of ridiculous that most games have VAR intervention, doesn't make referees seem that good

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that this affect only people who are watching a game with the refereeing view (us), i actually think that people watching games just want good decision at the end and for them a good OFR is actually a good point for the Ref as the final decision is correct.

      Delete
    2. It's not and you clearly have no idea of how hard it is to be a referee. I would argue that the referee's evaluation in a game is maybe even punished too much when they must be corrected by VAR in some situations where the error is perfectly understandable since it's almost impossible to catch live.

Which leads me to the point: Refereeing is extremely difficult, and it's impossible to be perfect. A lot of mistakes that lead to VAR intervention are understandable and would be commited by 90-100% of the elite referees

      Delete
    3. @sina this doesn’t remove the point that at this level FIFA and other confederations expect these elite referees to make the correct call on field. They get marked down in their assessments if they get it wrong. Maybe Chefren or Mikael or some of our referees with experience at this top level can explain to you why.

  68. Decent performance from Pinheiro today, I personally agreed with the OFR as I did for Almiron's OFR in Paraguay vs USA, but I'm just wondering why similar protocol was not applied in France vs Paraguay for Olise's yellow card which resulted from Galarza's simulation.

    1. Or maybe I shouldn't even be attempting to draw precedent from the worst refereed game this tournament :p

  69. Correct OFR, however I have to say this new rule doesn’t really seem like something that will help with VARs popularity. As others have said, if Pinheiro didn’t wrongly give a yellow card, then he wouldn’t have been sent off. Is it simulation? Of course but that would NEVER be given on field as simulation and a second yellow in a WC QF. By law, the correct decision was reached but is this really what we need? If he only kept his card in his pocket then the whole game could have been different. However there is no excuse for the awful simulation!

  70. Should just ask Tello to officiate every game from today

  71. Barton needs to get the Argentina-England game.

  72. Pinheiro shouldn’t even be close to being able to referee a match of this importance, just as he didn’t deserve to referee PSG v BAY. If there are conspiracy theories, FIFA has only itself to blame

  73. Could someone get clip for incident at 102 i think it was orange card with studs on the ankel

  74. Pinheiro's performance was heavily influenced by the biggest technical decision of all, the second yellow card. First of all, this confirms to us that what happened in Makkelie first match was considered a correct VAR call. However it is even more clear in this match because there is total evidence of simulation. Personally, though, I wouldn't call it mistaken identity, that's where the misunderstanding lies for me. It's not that the referee makes an error by confusing one player for another; he simply makes a wrong evaluation. Let's just say they make it fit into the mistaken identity parameter to classify it under VAR categories, but it remains a technical intervention for a wrongly issued yellow card. That being said, Pinheiro perhaps spent a bit too much time at the monitor, but the decision itself was crystal clear.
In my opinion, he did poorly in terms of credibility regarding the first yellow card given to the Swiss player: a lot of time passed, he went to check on the injured player, and he seemed to want confirmation before booking him. It didn't give me the impression of a definitive decision. The match then completely turned on the second yellow card.i For me,, the Portuguese referee didn't justify this appointment, which was objectively perhaps a bit too much for him.Same we saw in UEFA, happened in FIFA.

    3. I agree it's a dive. But we have hardly seen players booked for simulation , especially when they occur outside the box. Adding to the context that it is a second red ... I'm inclined to thinking that while it is not legally ' wrong ' it seems to be used at the whims of referees. I believe (even if I may be bashed) that if the roles are reversed an Argentinian would not have got sent off. I think the ' legal ' deterrent effect of booking players for simulation is more targeted at achieving a penalty because the cost in that situation is usually* a goal. But where the simulation is done outside the context of a penalty - I am unsure (even if legally justifiable) that that should be the direction we move towards. If we do want think we should follow the law to the T I.e. every clear simulation (0 contact?) deserves a yellow even where it is the second yellow- that I better see this as the default law applied to all teams.

    4. Wrong player got a yellow card. He identified the wrong player. Literally mistaken identity…

  75. Unfortunately, standard performance by Pinheiro, but it was obvious that he was under very big pressure after second yellow card. End of road for him after this game.
Good performance by Turpin, with two VAR calls(happy it was Brisard, what meaning that everything was ok at Argentina Egypt),but as for Pinheiro, end of road for him, and If France dont go to final, I see Letexier as undobutly No 1 for Final!

    1. Well, previously we had Abdiaziz’s obsession with Pinheiro in CL, now we have Ref Fot with Letexier :). My friend, what part of Letexier and Turpin, likely, going home after France reached SF you don’t understand? What do you think is the reason why Turpin got Norway-England?. The tournament of both should, and is, over.

Let’s ignore the France in SF argument: Do you really think Letexier will get a game after what happened? (Of course, I’m not saying, for example, he won’t be selected for the 2030WC…We all know that he has his place assured) But let’s be realistic…

He’s a TOP referee but he doesn't have to officiate every final of every tournament he participates in! He is just 37! He surely will be doing the CL final as next step (if PSG allows) so slow down!. It’s fine to have favorites (we all do), but it’s also good to show some partiality and realism when we know full well that certain things aren't going to happen! (curiously I think even ZwayerBrazil shows less of his fanaticism—when I would have expected the opposite!)

I have nothing against anybody on this blog, but with full respect, that’s what I think. Hope you don’t get it personal.

    2. Of course, not take it personal, yes its nice to have favourites, but its only on merit! If I watch it realisticaly,I will choose I said Faghani after how he keep control at Azteca, and full tournamnet. But, after semi finals it will be more clear!Cheers Diego!

  78. When will we know the final list of referees that are retained on WC?

    1. Probably today. But don’t get your hopes up. The French will leave the basecamp. Just like the English, Argentinians and Spaniards.

A French referee for the final would not be credible anyway. Letexier would be labeled by media, already before the kick-off, as the referee who gave everything to Argentina, while Turpin had two OFRs. End of story.

That is why Faghani is also a question mark for me. He had two OFRs in an otherwise great game but is it credible to appoint him to the final after 2 OFR?

    2. @unknown : so who would you appoint ?

  79. I think that in the remaining four matches - especially the third-place playoff - we could still see referees from confederations that have otherwise been almost completely excluded from the knockout stage, particularly CAF, appearing at least as fourth officials. I am also puzzled that, while we saw Katia García as a fourth official in the Round of 16, Tori Penso has not appeared on an appointment since the Round of 32. It is possible that she may still make an appearance during the final phase of the tournament.
As for the referees in the middle, I suspect we will only see officials who have already handled at least one knockout match (although the third-place playoff could potentially be an exception here as well). Contrary to predictions made by some observers, I do not expect Szymon Marciniak to be appointed to the third-place playoff. Chronologically, it is the last game before the final and therefore, in a sense, the highest appointment he could achieve after refereeing the 2022 World Cup Final. In practical terms, however, it is of lesser significance than a semifinal and therefore more likely to be used for a "political" appointment.
I am also uncertain about the prospects of a European referee for the final. Historically, World Cup Finals were awarded alternately to referees from different confederations until that unwritten rule was broken in 2014, when Nicola Rizzoli followed Howard Webb. If UEFA were to receive the appointment again, we would have had four European referees in five finals since 2010, interrupted only by Néstor Pitana. In theory, of course, the best referee should be selected regardless of confederation. This is particularly relevant given that World Cups take place only once every four years and many referees participate in only a single edition. We also know, however, that such appointments are usually politically sensitive matters.
The fact that Alireza Faghani is being mentioned so frequently leads me to think that one of two things will happen: either he will be blocked via the proverbial "red telephone" by the U.S. President, or he will be appointed through the same channel in order to instrumentalize him for political messaging (see the discussion surrounding the "Peace Prize"). How much genuine objectivity remains in the process at this stage, free from external intervention, I honestly do not know.
Referees from Argentina, England, and France can probably be ruled out in principle because either their own national teams may reach the final or those teams were direct opponents in the semifinals. While similar situations have occurred in European competitions - for example, Pedro Proença at UEFA EURO 2012 - I consider it almost inconceivable that FIFA would expose itself to that kind of pressure at a World Cup. Even the appointment of an Argentine refereeing team to a France match in the quarterfinals attracted significant media criticism, despite the fact that France was not even Argentina's potential semifinal opponent and Facundo Tello had not made any major mistakes in his previous assignments.

    1. My pick for FRA–ESP would be Maurizio Mariani. On the one hand, this is an all-European fixture, which makes it a suitable appointment for a UEFA referee. On the other hand, it is also a high-profile clash between neighbouring countries, a type of match for which referees from the traditional “big” football nations are often selected.
His tournament path so far - two group-stage matches and one Round-of-32 appointment - would also fit well within the expected progression. In addition, Italy always has a strong pool of experienced VAR officials. Since the Italian national team did not qualify for the tournament, Mariani could have been considered for key appointments well in advance, which is another factor working in his favour.

  81. For this kind of situation it should be prescribed obligatory red card for stupidity!!! 1/4 final of WC, you have yellow card and you make such a dive at the middle of the pitch in VAR era! That should be direct RC in the future.

FRA-ESP: Valenzuela, Urriego, Moreno (all VEN), Nyberg (SWE) - Lara (CHI), di Bello (ITA), Dickerson (USA)
ENG-ARG: Barton, Moran (both SLV), Pupiro (NCA), Ramos (MEX) - Al Marri (QAT), Obaid (UAE), Alshehri (KSA)
