After much deliberat...https://streamable.com/u32f8

After much deliberation I present my view:

* Džeko tries to win a penalty off the right leg of the defender (clues: ball he hits hard to do that, odd movement pattern, look at his left leg, ready to get tripped)

* When trying to do that, his left leg actually does get hit by defender's left leg (you can see the change of movement, defender feels that contact, it's clear that he thinks he has fouled his opponent)

-> So, as Džeko has played for the penalty, on a philosophical level, can we punish the standing leg tackle of the defender? This is the crucial question IMO.

This a genuine grey area where observer should back either penalty or simulation with the correct explanation from the match officials.

Expanding further, my take on this can be considered quite relativistic, but I believe that play on would be the best decision (with simulation being much more preferable than a penalty).

Defender's left leg tackle is a typical standing-leg tackle, that should be punished with a YC. This is unnatural and manufactured situation by Džeko. BUT I see two crucial differences between this an typical standing leg tackle:

1) Džeko's leg is in the air, so no danger for injury
2) Such interpretations are to protect player's safety - as Džeko's leg is up (no danger), I don't believe that he should be protected by that when he tries everything just to get fouled.

So, what happens is rather either off-the-ball careless foul (that is play-on) or normal footballing contact if we say that Džeko's leg is off the ground. So, while it is clearly the worst decision en praxis, I believe that PLAY ON is the correct decision in a objective reality.

In the real world, though it is wrong, better to punish the simulation there than award a penalty (fair somehow, as Džeko is only interested to get fouled), that are only two options here in practice.

And they had a few seconds to make a decision...Mikael Whttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05362465559010649548noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3596681196436096141.post-26685120395268095272019-09-11T10:51:10.243+02:002019-09-11T10:51:10.243+02:00I give my impressions of three further matches tha...I give my impressions of three further matches that I watched during this international break; I did not take notes so perhaps I missed sth, but perhaps my impressions are partly useful.

Starting in reverse chronological order, I spent yesterday evening watching the game in Elbasan handled by Ivan Kružliak. In general, no problems for the Slovakian, not so much to say about the refereeing. My thoughts on him were ambivalent, he showed some good prevention but also took some 'surprising' decisions. I know that such games that have some ex ante potential to 'kick-off' but are generally played fairly leave the referee in some kind of limbo as to how to handle the game - basically Kružliak sorted out cards when the game needed it. Some decisions taken pointed rather to a lack of confidence, opposing the last time I saw him in Partizan - Beşiktaş game where he was really excellent (8,6 but for missed caution) - this confident, modern manager who's talks with players never sacrificed authority seemed to have gone. I think UEFA even considered him on CL KO level (remember decision taken to have VAR there was after they sent Batta to observer him in R5 of group matches as a 1st Cat.), but he did not show a good performance in Hoffenheim - Shakhtar. Perhaps I generalise but I got the feeling he did not really recover from that yet - a talent indeed, but not material for an eighteen-referees EURO next year.

Yesterday evening I caught the Poland - Austria game handled by Viktor Kassai. I fully agree with david02's report that Hungarian handled the game well with one or the other mistakes - I would contend the statement that he "is back" though. I myself confidently declared this after his strong performance in the Burnley - Olympiakós game (then he made me look an idiot in Manchester, but besides that). One part of Kassai's game is "back", his feeling for when to and when not to whistle a foul, I would say he is one of Europe's strongest 'match-readers' - but I wonder whether this skill, which took him to WC Semifinal, CL Final, and two good performances from a EURO Final, ever left him; it doesn't help that in the meantime he took some really awful calls. What surely has left him from the referee of early-PLC era is his soft skills - one now has the impression of perpetually grumpy guy, who you would not wish to bump into on a Monday morning. I guess he retains his natural authority but I would even say it constitutes even some kind of paranoia that the players are trying to destroy him (of course, one NB1 player did exactly that to him). In the end his years at UEFA top are rather over - making good decisions he can stay in Elite, with mistakes he should be demoted to 1st Cat; if he retired tomorrow, he could be immensely satisfied with what he reached, now in the twilight of his career.

Finally I watched the quite 'fun' Armenia - Bosnia–Herzegovina game handled by Benoît Bastien. In general he offered a good performance. I appreciate his approach, analogous to Anthony Taylor - but I think that the Englishman has an 'X-Factor' right now that Bastien lacks. UEFA like him too, you don't get those Schalke - Galatasaray and Olympiakós - Milan games for nothing, but making crucial mistakes in both those matches ostensibly ended his international season (though I wonder if like Proença in 2013 he asked himself not to be appointed). I am quite confident it will return, but I just missed a bigger determination than what I saw from him before. EURO 2020 should be out of the question, but incrementally improving his appointments should follow as in-form he a valuable referee for UEFA who can handle big matches. As you noticed, I didn't talk about THAT in-box situation, which I will do below.
