(not necessarily a clear mistake)
Then we can take your percentages and say, if >70% say YES, then it is a clear mistake, i.e. a 7,9. And if >90% say YES, it is VAR stuff.

The difference is in situations, where e.g. 80% say "both decisions are OK, but I would have preferred a different call by the referee". This would mean "clear mistake" in your suggestion, although <20% think, that it is a mistake at all.

However, even if the majority opinion is "clear mistake", opinions, who think, it is in the grey area must be respected, if they are supported by arguments.Philipp Shttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17241731897712166394noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3596681196436096141.post-14074959218141627002018-12-14T10:25:21.324+01:002018-12-14T10:25:21.324+01:00In situations like Oliver in the Madrid Juve game ...In situations like Oliver in the Madrid Juve game last year and Bastien tonight or even the Cakir Nani red card a few years back we do not give enough applause to our refs for having the confidence to make big decisions at critical moments even though it would be more comfortable to take the easy way out. Refs should have the ability to call what they see regardless of the sitution, unfortunately this does not always exist so when it does we should praise our refs and show them as examples. This mentality of "it is a big game pretend you didnt see it" is wrong imo and holding back some of our refs from reaching full potential.Bgymnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05959827051701377224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3596681196436096141.post-78635112359004594462018-12-14T10:17:26.708+01:002018-12-14T10:17:26.708+01:00100% a penalty. I didn’t say that there were no black/white situations in football, far from that.

The thing is : referees have to take a yes/no decision on the pitch in a split second. That’s why this should lead us to be empathic with them. IMO a "yes/no" on the pitch can become a "yes/no/soft/harsh/supportable/etc." in debates after slow-motions. I know that being a referee myself.

Considering the soft pulling and the context (1-1, 80’ minute or so), I would go for a "no" if I really have to choose. It would be more clever I think.
However I still consider this decision as supportable, and never a crucial mistake. That’s my point of view and I share it. There are, indeed, difficult situations when opinions can be different. But not always, only in difficult situations !

Grey-area is not so large and shouldn't be enlarged by us in order to protect the referees !

On the pitch, the decision of the referees are "YES" or "NO", not "soft", "supportable" etc. For this reason also our evaluations should be, as much as possible, in the same manner (yes or no). Btw, in case of a poll regarding Bastien's penalty, which will be your option: YES or NO ?petschovschihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12704884480815856175noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3596681196436096141.post-2311227429514511172018-12-14T00:36:17.737+01:002018-12-14T00:36:17.737+01:00Fully agree with your report Mikael. The matter is not really the opinio...@petschovschi

The matter is not really the opinion about this penalty : I think the referee’s decision is supportable, you think it’s a mistake, and that’s it. I accept your opinion as you should accept mine, and we can find arguments for both points of view. As Stake says : football is not "black-or-white".

The point is the way you express your opinion. You refuse every opinion which are different from yours. And BTW, using the word "malicious" makes me feel as if your were having doubts about the referee’s impartiality. Maybe I’m wrong, but it would bother me not to be.

To sup it up : I think many people here on this blog are ready to discuss about referees’ decisions, but one should always accept every point of view. His usual distance from players but also eminently reasonable attitude was present. Calculation of additional time was not adequate in either half, one must say specially 2H. Foul detection was good.

It was clear to me he has ready for the match for the match he was going in to, he delivered a smart piece of refereeing, but...

The penalty was really unwise decision. Technically (rather, isolatedly) one can call it acceptable, but it really isn't enough to 'decide' such an important match for my taste. Defender barely has a hold of attacker, very little impact on his ability to play the ball. I am convinced this is a perception mistake to be honest; Frenchman I suspect will be disappointed watching the replay in the debrief. I agree though that VAR would support this, as well as UEFA referee observer most likely in terms of marks. But surely, not a preferable decision by Bastien.Mikael Whttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05362465559010649548noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3596681196436096141.post-80942464739630371122018-12-14T00:24:41.303+01:002018-12-14T00:24:41.303+01:00Agree. In times of VAR, the question we have to ask is: "Would VAR have intervened here" and I think the answer would be (rightfully) "No". Definitely a supportable decision that Bastien has made here.

@petschovschi: I don't know if you are a referee yourself or not, but I have the impression that you see refereeing decisions only as "black-or-white" decisions. But football is not about being "black-or-white", and the only times you ever turn up on the blog is when a referee commits (or seems to commit) a mistake, you're trying to impose your opinion to other users and you slam everyone who is not agreeing with you. You demand people to respect your opinion, but you're not doing by yourself what you're requesting from others.
