    0:46 penalty?
    1:51 clear offside missed?

    1. Video is now deleted, another clip of the Penalty is here

I do doubt the penalty. First of all is a fair action by Monreal blocking Sterling, but he does give him a small bump. After that (when he realises he can't shoot the ball) Sterling falls, and Monreal's leg does make some contact but that is only as MNC falls. Overall while it looks like an even clear penalty in real time, I think play-on would have been a very good/brave call; penalty is no clear mistake.
Also there is a controversial scene in the first half where Oliver rejected a penalty for a foul on Sterling- again acceptable call by the referee.

3-1 is offside, quite bad mistake at this level by AR2 Burt, player who played the ball is further away.

I can also report a (very) good Taylor in the crucial clash, Chelsea - Manchester United, the best I have seen him in quite a while- he was very strong on the pitch, I can imagine him and Oliver are promoted at Christmas, or at least one of them for 2018/19.

  5. I dont know really what to say about Turpin tonight.
Missed or not given atleast 3-4 bookings which led to 48' and brutal foul from St Etienne player which was obvious red card.
He was way too lenient tonight, especially in first half when tensions were high in Rhone derby .

    1. It was his tactical approach to delay the moment of issuing the first yellow card as much as possible, I can live with that. Obvious red card but I have a feeling it was the assistant referee who adviced him to issue a red card (I think Turpin underestimated that tackle at first). Then, when the score was 0-4, he decided to not issue yellow cards for SPA. One can argue with that, one can praise him for empathy for the game and the players. Management and tactical approach is always a difficult topic, especially when it works well in the game.

To be honest, I wouldn't link not issued yellow cards in the first half with the SFP at the beginning of the second half.

  17. I don't understand.
First thing to ask: did AR raise his flag? the video doesn't show that...
The position of the player seems to be extremely tight offside, however close to ONSIDE.
At any rate, once whistled clearly before the goal, it is a technical mistake by referee, who couldn't allow the goal in that situation.

    3. For what I know, it should mean that the game is not officially recognized by FIFA and for this reason it can't be reported in the archives. It shouldn't count for the rankings of both national teams.

  26. A few clips for analysis from some Ligue 1 matches this Sunday.

FC METZ - LILLE LOSC, referee: Jérôme Brisard (to enter FIFA list in 2018)
Busy match for the young official, having seen the whole match, an overall very convincing performance, in which he had three crucial penalty situations to assess.

37' - YC for N'Guette after simulation (excellently spotted!)
    https://streamable.com/tay8n

45' - Penalty for Lille after foul by Rivierez
    https://streamable.com/ujsje

66' - Penalty appeal after Balliu falls down in the penalty area
    https://streamable.com/jjzp6

AS SAINT-ÉTIENNE vs. OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS, referee: Clément Turpin
I have not seen the entire game, but I guess Turpin had to face a very tough atmosphere (as always when these two teams meet). But I have the SFP clip for analysis.

47' - RC Lacroix for SFP. What is the most interesting here is the management of the whole situation: I have the feeling Turpin himself at first was not alert about the severity of the offence, because he only walks to the scene at the beginning, then when the mass-confrontation started. I think the situation could have been managed in a better way, what do you think about it?

    1. About Brisard, very good decisions in 37' and 66', but I have always my doubts when I watch a situation similar to the one occurred in 45'. Indeed, that's my point of view: it is true that defender puts the leg without any chance to hit the ball, but mostly the contact is caused by attacker who goes deliberately towards the opponent. Whistling penalty is of course supportable and perhaps even correct, but I definitely don't like this attitude by attackers. I would always like to see a clear foul caused by defender, in order to whistle a penalty. However, this is only my point of view, penalty is absolutely supportable.

About Turpin: good remark. He had not the exact perception of the incident, at least immediately after having whistled, otherwise he would have run without hesitations.
Maybe he was informed / suggested by AR1 / FO about the SFP? Surely a better management was possible there, if he spotted by himself the SFP, his missing reaction has not explanations.

    2. Good thanks;
well I think that its' time to remove Thomson and Fernandez Borbalan, while Tagliavento seems to have recovered and got more trust in the last CL stage, due to its appointments. So probably he will stay in elite class.
Concerning new entry, I se 99% sure Oliver and Taylor and probably Soares Dias since he is getting important appointments. Maybe not Kulbakov, probably Mazeika is ahead.
      So I would say:

      Kálovecz Pavel Czech Republic
      Taylor Anthony England
      Oliver Michael England
      Turpin Clément France
      Aytekin Deniz Germany
      Brych Felix Germany

      Sidiropoulos Anastosis Greece
      Kassai Viktor Hungary

    1. Mistake of Bastien: whistling the offside immediately. He should have waited for the end of action. In case of goal scored by Neymar, VAR wouldn't be able to intervene!

      https://streamable.com/v0gxk

      Delete
    2. 7': this penalty should have been spotted directly by Bastien, he was looking at the corner taker, totally missing the visual control of penalty area, a clear mistake, and I must say very strange from a so experienced referee.

16': Correct or at least supportable penalty decision, no need of VAR intervention.

44': Mistake by AR, mistake by referee as well (he whistled before seeing where the ball was going!), that would have been a serious mistake, given the VAR presence, in case it was then impossible for them to intervene.

Let me say, VAR is a very difficult system. All referee using it (both on the pitch and behind monitors) must be absolutely experienced and instructed. Under this point of view, FIFA will have a huge work to make on next months, preparing WC 2018.
Referees like Brych, Rocchi, Orsato Zwayer, Marciniak and all the ones from countries with this technology should instruct the other ones, because it is absolutely not easy!

    3. Well spotted simulation
      https://streamable.com/xhj7b

Another VAR intervention. Nicolas Rainville is really alert. Good job. The question is whether Benoit Bastien took the correct decision, taking into account that:
"a player who, when not challenging for the ball, deliberately strikes an opponent or any other person on the head or face with the hand or arm, is guilty of violent conduct unless the force used was negligible"
      https://streamable.com/hileg

    4. Hi Ray and Chefren,
7': What I didn't like is that 20 seconds passed before Bastien has a chance to see VAR review. What would happen if there were 2-3 minutes before the ball went out of the filed? What would be an appropriate time to review VAR?

      Delete
    5. Hi Niko,
I think in that case, Bastien would have stopped the game after a quite long time without any stoppage. Indeed after 2 or 3 minutes it would be then quite difficult to return back, many things can happen.
In Italy, where, as you very likely know, VAR is already used in serie A, referees stop the game when they have a VAR review call. So I think Bastien would have done the same there.

    1. Yes, a clear offside missed by AR2. The pitch helps us in detecting it (different color of the grass)...

    1. Sad for a friendly. Australian referee Chris Beath, a bit overtaken by events, give no caution, only verbal warning. Insufficient.

    1. Now good call (53'), Busquets was being hold by a Russian defender. Not usual to see these calls. What do you think about the execution? Illegal feint or regular execution?

I saw many players kicking a penalty in this manner. In my opinion it was regular.

  49. Here's an odd one in the Argentina/Nigeria game that led to the opening goal...

Did the GK think that he could handle in the penalty arc or something?
