Would you take any disciplinary sanction against the coach who did that?
What would be the sanction if the coach did that to a supporter? Most likely a red card, so I would apply the same sanction.
DeleteWhat would be the sanction if the coach did that to a balloon? ;)
DeleteAt most a warning for entering the pitch, I guess.
But I am really not sure here.
Is a dog a balloon? o.O It's a living creature.
DeleteIt is, and ethically, you have a point here.
DeleteBut legally animals are often handled like things (e.g. you can own them).
And in the LoTG, I doubt that animals are included in the "...spectators and any other person" part of the VC section.
Following this logic you would be able to avoid being sent off even if you kill the animal (you can destroy the balloon or whatever legally).
DeleteI'm a bit undecided but I think I would have probably given the coach his marching orders... I don't find this behaviour acceptable on a football pitch!!
DeleteSerdar Gözübüyük with Marseille - Braga, a very good appointment for the young Dutch.
ReplyDeleteSkomina in Europa League...
ReplyDeleteThis a huge surprise... Is it kind of a warm up before he gets a CL R16 2nd leg game??
DeleteNot only Skomina. Mazic as well...
DeleteSurely not a coincidence. We have two CL final candidates starting with an EL game. In both cases, not a real top clash.
DeleteOn the other hand we have Rocchi in Madrid being observed by Dallas... Committee I think is looking at World Cup as well
DeleteWow, really surprised by Skomina in EL; I was expecting him in CL. I hope that it is just a warm up for 2nd leg, as said by Soham. In any case if some referees are appointed two times in the next 4 weeks (EL and CL), many Class 1 are ruled out. So it doesn't make sense to have so populated class
ReplyDeleteI dont think Skomina's appointment indicate something bad... In year when he had CL final Cakir was appointed once in CL and three times in EL in knock out faze. I agree with commitee's choice to appoint Skomina in EL first: they will see if he still has form from group stage, then CL appointment to top clash, one more EL match just to keep the form and then CL final :)
ReplyDeleteBut what I don't get is Del Cero Grande. Only one match in group faze??? And now knock out stage match?
ReplyDeleteHe is, in my opinion and at the moment, one of the best referees in Spain, above the others he share UEFA category with. I think this has not gone unnoticed for the committee and hence the appointment. IMO, if it wasn't for his age, he would have clearly been the next spanish Elite.
DeleteViktor Kassai also in UEL... Lyon v Villareal
ReplyDeleteWow even Milorad Mazic in UEL in a not so big game... Surprising appointments to say the least!!
DeleteWell, expected, after the last season and the appointments he got in CL group stage. I think he wont appear at all in CL KO stage... but of course, let's see.
DeleteMaybe the same for Aytekin? Even though a year has passed, committee could be still "worried" about that. Of course, not about the referees and their skills, but just as reason of opportunity.
Honestly speaking both Kassai and Aytekin are fine confined to the EL... We have other potential candidates for future who can get UCL games!! Still Lyon v Villareal looks a decent enough appointment for Kassai!!
DeleteZwayer has overtaken Aytekin in UEFA, I would imagine the younger German and Makkelie will debut in CL KO this year.
DeleteDespite making a promising performance showcasing skills on a very high level, his night in Barcelona seems to have cost Deniz Aytekin in UEFA.
I agree Mikael. The clash involving AS Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk could be the game for both Makkelie and Zwayer.
DeleteConsidering that Makkelie was already trusted with Liverpool v Sevilla and Chelsea v Atletico Madrid in the group stage, I could even imagine Makkelie in Munich for Bayern v Besiktas!!
DeleteMost interesting; Uilenberg for Dias, Young for Gozoboyuk and Paniashvili for Mazic.
ReplyDeleteOne more from top group of observers: Reijgwart for Kulbakov
DeleteUilenberg for Artur Dias is absolutely perfect... Soares Dias is definitely a promotion candidate come this June!!
DeleteA final test for Dias? However, I think, committee has already watched him so many times with important observers.
DeleteA decision for June now must come without doubts...
I think Soares Dias is ready for the next step... If it's not now then it's never... Age isn't really in his side for too long!!
DeleteWell last year Bebek got only 1 match in K.O. stage.
ReplyDeleteLooks like that Braga night has costed him majorly because this year I dont know if he's gonna get any EL match.
Probably not... Because he was not invited to the seminar... So I think that rules him out!!
DeleteLot of 1st group wasnt appointed, for example;Estrada,Manzano,Stieler,Bezborodov and many others.
DeleteLooks like 2nd legs for them.

KO stage debuts for István Kovács, Carlos Del Cerro Grande and Daniel Stefański.
ReplyDeleteI remember Del Cerro Grande, he was a Category 2 referee less than two seasons ago and he looked to be ready to leave the list without any chance to make further steps. Then, suddenly everything changed for him. He was promoted to Category 1 and he managed to be appointed for a game of KO stage. He has surely impressed the committee, because everything has happened very quickly. Estrada Fernández, who has almost the same age, has been ruled out in favor of him.
Also Poland can be proud to see another referee at the KO stage of European cups, Stefański managed that at the age of 40. Maybe not a long future ahead, and maybe he wont be promoted to Elite, but surely an excellent achievement so far.
Stefanski can still have a career like Andre Marriner... A steady and safe pair of hands almost for all UEL games!!
DeleteDel Cerro Grande is interesting because he really did make a career from one match- absolutely excellent performance in the very challenging Copa Final, Sevilla - Barcelona 2016. It was, at least, close to a 9- full control and so many crucial decisions correctly evaluated.
DeleteStefanski was very convincing in a really hot match in Albania in this group stage, let's see how far he can go aged forty.
Anthony Taylor has been appointed for a FA Cup match on Monday 19th March and not with his regular assistants... Michael Oliver has no appointments this weekend... Can we read something into this?? Obviously Bayern v Besiktas no more possible for Taylor, so maybe Shaktar v Roma??
ReplyDeleteMonday 19th March? :)
DeleteSorry 19th February :D That's a clear 7.9 for me :D
DeleteSo, no CL on next week for Taylor, but very likely Europa League. Champions League for Oliver? Difficult, but in case Bayern or Shakhtar...
DeleteOliver's ARs have FA Cup games... Simon Bennett has a game on Sunday 18 Feb and Stuart Burt has a game on Saturday 17 Feb...
DeleteIf Oliver or Taylor have a CL match, then logically it will be a 2nd leg.
DeletePersonally I would prefer both of them in high voltage UEL clashes right now to be honest so that we can form a clear idea of how well they handle challenging games in Europe!!
DeletePrediction for UCL next week :
ReplyDeleteBayern Munich v Besiktas : Danny Makkelie (Netherlands)
Chelsea v Barcelona : Szymon Marciniak (Poland)
Sevilla v Manchester United : Sergei Karasev (Russia)
Shakhtar Donetsk v Roma : Ovidiu Hategan (Romania)
Very good game by Paweł Raczkowski. Few good decisions by his team.
ReplyDeleteAlways good to hear :)
DeleteMatch without controversies. Some well-played advantages, good management, verbal warnings. 8.4 in an easy-going match.
DeleteAgree with Jovan. But quite easy match for a solid polish team.
ReplyDeleteGerman FIFA-Referee Christian Dingert has a match on friday in Saudi-Arabia between Al Hilal against Al Shabab. Tobias Christ and Mike Pickel are referee assistants
ReplyDeleteFirst women in KO stage in match between Partizan and Viktoria as fourth?
ReplyDeleteNo, Kourompylia has had regular appointments with Michael Koukoulakis in EL as fourth official and she was even his regular AR2 in the whole of 2015 (including a KO match: Torino-Bilbao, if I am not wrong).
DeleteAstana - Sporting CP will be played with a temperature of -17 degrees. I think it is a (negative) record for a UEFA game.
ReplyDeleteDoes someone have the appointments for the next Bundesliga round? I will go to Schalke 04 against Hoffenheim 1899 so I wonder who is the referee.
ReplyDeleteIt seems as appointments for Saturday and Sunday are still to be published.
DeleteReferee is Benjamin Brand with his regular assistants Robert Schröder and Frederick Assmuth
DeleteThank you MaxY
DeleteZwayer is appointed to the Monday match Frankfurt-Leipzig, so he can't get CL. EL is still possible, but I think, in case of an appointment there, they might have given him another game this MD.
DeleteStieler referees Augsburg-Stuttgart (his 5th match in 6 matchdays this year - unusual for BL) on Sunday, so EL seems very likely.
Two crucial decisions in the last minutes of first half for the French team in Kazakhstan: two disallowed goals. The first by AR1 to Sporting, the second by AR2 to Astana, both correct decisions.
ReplyDeleteOverall for Buquet expected level, maybe just one or two missed fouls...
47' penalty for deliberate handball to Sporting, very likely spotted by AAR2. Well dione.
DeleteSorry but how is this a correct decision? https://streamable.com/b8ehp (0:36)
DeleteThe attacker who scored from the rebound was played onside by two players, including one right in front of the AR! Those AARs would be much better deployed in the VAR room...
Not even close to offside. Very weird.
DeleteOhh sorry, I don't know how, but I watched a replay and it looked like the player was ONSIDE. I really can't explain that. Of course, a clear mistake there, and even blatant by AR. Sorry again for the wrong info.
DeleteIs goal line technology used in Europa League? Saw that the referees in Östersund - Arsenal were watches that look like the ones in Champions League.
ReplyDeleteYes.
DeleteMazic with good yc to Abate.
ReplyDeleteAnything else?
Deletemaybye an missed offside at the goal of Milan. the replay wasn't clear at my broadcaster
DeleteI saw it. Good decision by ar1
DeleteNice - Lokomotiv: very harsh penalty whistled by Kovács, I think it wasn't a punishable handball. In addition, the ball hit at first the body. I wouldn't have called it.
ReplyDeleteClear penalty now whistled to Lokomotiv.
Delete'28 Maybye a missed RC in the game Dortmund Atalanta. Studs in the upperlag of a dortmund player
ReplyDelete62': penalty to Ludogorets by Mazic for pushing.
ReplyDeleteCorrect decision after several replays, it could look soft at first glance, but definitely a significant touch to make the opponent fall down. Defender not interested in playing the ball, of course.
*to Milan
DeleteClear penalty. Should have been a YC?
DeleteAccording to Mazic, this wasn't a promising attack, I want to rewatch but I think one can agree. It was not a central position and if I'm not wrong, player was not going towards the net.
DeleteStraight red card issued by Istvan Kovacs to a Nice player at 67'...
ReplyDeleteDOGSO, good decision
Delete'90 Correct PK given by Borbalan for Ostersund: Bellerin tackles too late and missed the ball
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody know what the referee salary is per match in the Europa League? Same as CL?
ReplyDeleteMissed Penalty for Leipzig by Dias (28')? Ball was far away but he clearly hits his opponent...
ReplyDeleteIndeed I think penalty should have been whistled there.
DeleteApart from that, a very easy game so far. Nothing to do for the Portuguese, this was the only situation...
AAR2 and Dias should have been aware of this incident. Frankly, not too difficult to decide.
DeleteIs anyone watching Tasos Sidiropoulous??
ReplyDeleteYes Soham, the 1-1 should be disallowed but Sidiropoulous didn't it. It was offside, but it was very very hard to detect
DeleteClear offside position by Plzens player who is goal assistant. Not at all hard to detect. Clear mistake by AR2
DeleteDel Cerro Grande is very good so far. Correctly rejected 2 penalty appeals by home side. He lets the game flow and disciplinary control os also very good.
ReplyDeleteMin. 61
DeletePossible 2nd Yc missed TO a Dynamo player after a correctly whistled foul for AEK.
Min 75.
DeleteMissed 2nd YC to N19 Dynamo for a foul on an opponent.
Robert Madden issued an incredible 11 (!) number of yellow cards in Real Sociedad v Red Bull Salzburg... Wow 😯
ReplyDeleteDortmund-Atalanta: By the way, a blatant offside position was missed by AR1 Marcin Boniek before 2-2(?). I‘m not sure whether it was Atalanta‘s first goal or the second one. However, definitely a crucial mistake.
ReplyDeleteIt was just before the 1-1. But as you already mentioned, that was really blatant.
DeleteWhat I can underline about Soares Dias first half is the following: fitness and physical condition absolutely excellent, he made some remarkable sprints (for example at the kick off and then in another situation when a quick counterattack by Napoli started), good communication with players and gestures as well. He shows to be focused and alert about the game. Nevertheless, there was a situation in which penalty should have been whistled.
ReplyDeleteVideo:
https://streamable.com/pzy32
Sorry for quality, maybe later we will have a better one.
Disciplinary control was not a problem, game was more than fair, maybe a card was possible in only one situation but it is absolutely OK in such context to whistle only the foul.
He will be backed. There is a new instruction that in such case when the ball is clearly played by an attacker and that attacker has no chance to reach it anymore, the foul has to be at least reckless or unsporting behaviour in order to whistle a penalty.
DeleteClear penalty missed over there... Incredible!!
DeleteVery good decision from AR1, Rui Licinio Tavares, in the second goal of Leipzig.
Delete12’ : how it’s possibie for Kassai to let the play on with this cristal DOGSO !!!! Weird, weird, weird ! (LYON - Villareal)
ReplyDeleteDaniel Stefański in Dortmund - Atalanta. Great management (imo he's clearly better than Paweł Raczkowski on this field), but unfortunately missed penalty (52') and two potential violent conducts (28', 43'). Have your say!
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/c3ng4
P.S.
I will check whether the missed offside had something to do with a Dortmund's goal.
28': in my opinion impossible to say whether it was a deliberate action or not.
Delete43': without replay it is difficult to assess the incident, in doubt referee should be backed, it can be even a dive by Borussia player.
52': clear penalty, and YC for reckless challenge...
Very challenging game for Stefański!
The incident at 26' seems like it should be a red card for SFP (or even VC).
DeleteFrom this video, Stefanski was not very convincing. I'm not a fan of his body language.
Tackle at 19 is clear serious foul play.
DeleteTackle at 21 also serious foul play.
Delete26 clear serious foul play also.
DeleteRay- Management is important and grwat if you already know when a yellow and red should be given. This is my opinion but this referee thinks talking is better than giving a clear red card.
Can we say that Stefański was not still ready for KO stage? Borussia Dortmund - Atalanta has been very difficult, but too many unpunished or wrongly punished incidents.
DeleteI think perhaps this game was not the best suited for a ref making his EL KO stage debut...
DeleteI believe they could've easily swapped Stefanski with say Mazic or Sidiropoulous easily!!
DeleteIn my opinion, it was a too big game for him at the moment, but after excellent game in Albania...
DeleteAnd indeed, there was a missed offside prior to 1-1 goal
https://streamable.com/42xo5
Violent conduct missed by Kassai, should have been a straight RC for punching the opponent. It was Mario Gaspar (Villareal) who did that.
ReplyDeleteJust to add: Not easy, maybe almost impossible to detect as the ball was quite far away.
DeleteViktoria goal for 1-1 leading from offside. What a crucial mistake by AR2
ReplyDeletehttps://ibb.co/ifuXy7
Deletepicture of the offside situation at the 1-1. Very hard to detect
DeleteHe was like 1m behind. In my opinion not hard to detect because you have 2 Partizans players infront.
DeleteVery difficult to detect, I agree. Maybe a small part of left upper body was offside but who can spot that?
Delete1m? Omg, are you serious?
DeleteHe was talking about AR not players probably.
DeleteWell, when you say 'not hard to detect' for these kind of situations...
Delete'85 Strange RC (2nd Yellow) given by Sidiropoulous. I don't know why
ReplyDeleteuefa.com reports that the player fouled an opponent.
DeleteMitrović (Partizan) concedes a free-kick for a foul on Krmenčík (Plzeň). Mitrović (Partizan) receives a second yellow card and is sent off.
politically correct response from UEFA
DeleteBoth YC to Partizan player were so soft.
DeleteSkomina with a 9 yc in 2nd half. Did anyone watched?
ReplyDeleteYes (as it involved my team, Celtic).
DeleteIt was a decent performance, couple of weird decisions but nothing major. Most of the YC were warranted, maybe except Dembele for walking off slowly when he could've added more time - he only added 2 minutes for 4 subs + an injury.
I have read an extremely negative feedback about Aytekin's performance in Bucharest, but of course it must be checked.
ReplyDeleteHopefully on next days I will watch some of those games, reporting something.
What went wrong apparently?
DeleteI didn't watch the game, but it is reported that he missed a penalty, he issued very soft cards, being not consistent and he allowed time wasting by Steaua, especially in the last part of the game.
DeleteVery high number of YCs that I did note!!
DeleteI watched the game, Aytekin did not make any big errors, it is true that 2 or 3 YC were soft however he kept the same line from the beginning.
DeleteAs for the penalty appeal the situation is at 5:02 in the video below, almost impossible to detect live, especially if you watch where Aytekin was positioned.
Also a possible missed RC for Immobile for hitting an opponent without the ball (10:09 +replay at 10:18) - Immobile got away only with a YC after this incident.

Thanks for the clips ANONYMOUS. It seems clear that you didn’t like the performance of Del Cerro :)
DeleteA second yellow card must be clear 200%. Clearly, he tryed to manage the situations, and I think the holdings are not blatant or stop a promissing attack, and in the same line the two fouls against number 7 of AEK... REFEERING isn’t MATHS, at least at this level. ;)
Hello everyone,
ReplyDeleteI read this blog regularly and I wanted to post my first message. I am French, so I will start with the refeering of my country. Clement Turpin is our best whistle, if he continues his progression that seems linear, can he be the next french to lead a Champions League final? With the retirement of Tony Chapron and the withdrawal of Antony Gautier, this seems to be the desert behind the Turpin Buquet Bastien trio and the stagnation of referees like Millot and Rainville. Can François Letexier be the new Turpin ?
Another thing: Kuipers, Rocchi, Undiano Mallenco and Fernandez Borbalan were all born in 1973 and should stop at the end of the year? Who to replace them in the Elite category? Is it too early for Gil Manzano, Stieler or Bastien? Too late for Buquet?
Mazic also 1973 born... I think Kuipers, Mazic, Rocchi all may end their careers with the World Cup!!
DeleteKuipers told that he after the WC will finish them international career
DeleteYes he had indeed said so in an interview but that retirement might also come in December and not June!!
DeleteUndiano Mallenco has still one more season to go. Fernández Borbalán will retire at the end of this season.
DeleteMazic might also end international career after WC but lets see. Jovanovic will change him in the future. Wonder what'll happen with his team since Danilo Grujic is 38, Nenad Djokic 39, Milovan Ristic will turn 44 this year and Dalibor Djurdjevic will turn 45 in 1 month.
DeleteIn my opinion from performences in our league Danilo Grujic can continue with Mazics team and add some new faces.
As we're speaking about France, something interesting is the appointment of Mikael Lesage for classic top clash Marseille-Bordeaux. It didn't happen very often to see a non FIFA referee for a big game, and it didn't happen often to see any other name than Turpin, Bastien and Buquet as well! So let's hope he does a good job tomorrow evening
DeleteAfter Antony Gautier for OM / Monaco, this is the second time in 2018 that a non-FIFA referee is appointed at Stade Velodrome for a big game, it's quite surprising, even if Lesage is experienced ...
DeleteThank you for your answers about the Elite referees who will be retiring this year. Who to replace them?
Turpin has a match Sunday in the Ligue 1. Makkelie had a match Friday. I expect Makkelie in the CL and Turpin not.
ReplyDeleteAnother very controversial decision today in Germany. Freiburg's Abrashi flies into Bremen's Bargfrede, referee Hartmann only gives a yellow card. I guess he did not see clearly the incident, because he was focused on the ball.
ReplyDeleteIn my view this is a clear SFP: studs-up tackle, hitting point is under the knee and the way Abrashi jumps into his opponent can be seen as excessive force. VAR had to recommend a review here in this situation IMO.

What are your thoughts on this?
Clear SFP also for me and relevant for the VAR.
DeleteI think, Hartmann should also have seen it himself.
Also looking at similiar situations in the last weeks, it doesn't seem to be a problem with the VAR, but too lenient interpretation of what a SFP is. DFB should raise awareness among referees (and VARs) and make the border between YC and RC sharper again to reduce the grey area for those situations. Then it is also easier for the VAR to classify it as clear and obvious mistake.
If they really think, YC is sufficient, they should communicate it to the public, because it is different to previous (and international) standards.
I agree, SFP, VAR should have intervened there.
DeleteThis is decided as offside by VAR in England.
