      But the card showing procedure and management left a lot to be desired... He took out his yellow card way too early and started writing and suddenly changed it to a red out of the blue which gave an impression of being influenced by Wigan players... In my point of view even the decision is debatable but that's for another day ;)

      I didn't know about the procedure by Taylor, I only watched the foul on youtube. Surely this wasn't a good thing. I thought that he had immediately shown the RC. In any case, I agree that for somebody this can be very harsh or even wrong, but I'm sure the RC is not a mistake. Hitting point is low but despite of that, challenge is made with excessive force and very dangerous.

      (For once) I can agree with @Sheriff, I would say that YC is still acceptable, the procedure is far from ideal, but it is actually refreshing to see a referee decide it's SFP in such a situation. I would much rather English referees took this approach, compared than missing absolutely brutal cases of SFP. Even against the background a RC he gave in Wolves - Swansea was (somehow) called a crucial mistake and overturned by the FA, respect for having the guts to take this decision (despite having decided for YC initially).

      Surely First Assistant or even Fourth Official would have shouted into the micro, and although Taylor was close his insight into the tackle was quite poor (not his fault, by luck).
      This also counts for the merits of bringing a notebook onto the pitch, if you aren't sure between YC/RC much better to get that out and have time to make an informed decision.

      I'm a referee and I would go yellow for that... The player got much of the ball, the tackle wasn't too high and it was not too footed... Excessive force is subjective and for me that's only reckless and a yellow... My interpretation!!

    Good appointment for Moen. Good to see that he gets an interesting clash and I hope he can convince. It's still a really sad thing that he was demoted, though it was deserved.

    Good appointment for Mazeika, important observer for Vincic. Kralovec with a not so interesting clash.
    Dissapointing match for Kruzliak, though whistling in the Arsenal Stadium is a great experience of course.
    I suppose he is kept for something bigger after this.

    Some remarks.
    At first, let's remember that these appointments have been made before knowing first leg scores, so the referees who got already decided clashes, under this point of view, were just unlucky.Kružliak is surely one of them, but, as already written by RikB, definitely a wonderful experience to officiate at Arsenal Stadium. Very likely, he will get something more and surely a better game.
    We have many Spanish assignments, with Mateu Lahoz, Undiano Mallenco and Gil Manzano. Including also the previous appointments for Del Cerro Grande and Fernández Borbalán, Spain is at moment the country with the biggest number of referees appointed in KO stage. All of them in Europa League.
    Milan - Ludogorets and Zenit - Celtic again with Elite referees assignments, after Mazic and Skomina in first legs.
    Europa League for Karasev. I must say, I'm still not fully convinced by the Russian and his management by committee. He is potentially a talent but every now and then he makes some evident and blatant mistakes in his game, as it happened in CL group stage. Being honest, I think he is less reliable than other elite referees, and now, since he is Elite by a long time, I don't know if there are real chances for improvement. That's of course my feeling and I can be wrong. But if we compare, for example, Karasev and Turpin, we must say that the French has gained a certain trust by committee in recent times, while the Russian is still looking for it. Both will be at World Cup, but as for now, I can't imagine the Russian on the pitch.
    Very important game for Vincic in Rome with Fandel, committee member. The game will be very hot, after first leg's score.
    Finally, an English team with Taylor in Leipzig. Decent appointment but nothing extra-ordinary, given also that the clash seems to be already decided in favor of German side.
    Atkinson not appointed: so it should be true that he didn't attend the course in Malta, even though he was called by UEFA.
    Tamás Bognár and Jakob Kehlet with their KO stage debuts, if I'm not wrong. Good news for Hungarian and Danish refereeing.

      If I am not wrong Liany, Bezborodov and Ekberg were in Malta but did not get a match. Two options: not so good results in Malta and as no match or they will be appointed in next round. Bezborodov and Liany are experienced and I would not be surprised but Ekberg in round of 16 as his first knock out match would be surprise.

      Yes, Liany and Bezborodov can get games on next round.
      About Ekberg, let's remember that he got promoted right now, so maybe before a KO stage assignment, committee wants to wait. Also, to be mentioned again that in Eriksson's game, Ekberg switched his position with Johannesson, and the latter was AAR1. This could be another signal that for the moment Ekberg still needs time.

    Very good NO FLAG by AR2 before Lokomotiv goal.
    A few minutes later, Balotelli was booked for reckless challenge, I think it was a SFP. Studs up hitting the opponent close to ankle. The player was frustrated because before Lokomotiv's goal, Nice had hit twice the crossbar.

      Free kick to Nice just before the end of first half: Balotelli was stil nervous and he wanted Královec to move the wall. Referee didn't want to hear him.
      Possible deliberate handball on the wall, shot was deflected and thn saved by keeper.
      Some interesting situations in this first half.

    First half by Taylor in Leipzig - Napoli: expected level.
    He issued two YC having a strict application of LotG. In both situations, another referee could have whistled without issuing a card. The first was for reckless use of arm while jumping and the second for a late challenge.
    Very good performance so far by AR1: some offside calls, all correct decisions, the most important one in 28', denying an OGSO (player had hit the post). Well done so far by English team in a not so difficult game.

    1-1 by Astana in Lisbon, offside missed by AR. I would dare even to say that this was stuff for AAR, indeed he could be sure of the offside, given the position of attacker.
    He impeded goalkeeper in his movement at the moment of the shot and then he also obstructed his view.
    Missed teamwork in Bognár's team.
    This was not easy to detect but at the same time expected and not that difficult at this level.

    01:50 Leipzig - Napoli in second half quite blatant mistake by AR2 and Taylor, on a long ball, a defender from Lepzig made a deliberate play by raising his leg and hitting the ball. This annulled the offside position reported by AR1, but Taylor, despite of a frontal view, whistled for offside. An OGSO was denied. Video will follow.

      Not a crucial mistake but definitely you expect more from an Elite referee there. Taylor was OK for the rest of the game, but this missed cooperation with AR was not a good presentation ticket in his first game as Elite referee.

      Even Jonathan Moss and Andre Marriner gets big games but that doesn't mean they are ranked above Atkinson or Oliver... All big games can't be handled by Atkinson alone... And I'm absolutely sure Taylor is PGMOL's number 3 currently!! And a small look through the palmares of English refs will tell who is the brighter prospect for the future and we all know who that is!!

      Such a subjective approach. Oliver is too immature and has a huge problem with penalty area decisions. It is proved many times until now.

      His age is on his side and that's why he took a 2nd chance by UEFA (noone can deny that). Another obvious example being Kuipers. Not many other referee got such a chance.

      Agreed fully, in my opinion Pawson will go furthest of the current English referees. The most sophisticated personality despite his reasonably tender age, he is shown he is able to handle top clashes in PL this year (despite some crudités).
      Some referees like Kristinn Jakobsson et al, never even got this one chance...

    Vincic was very good in the first half. Two very brave yellow cards for dissent of Lazio players in 30' and 33'. He didn't hesitate even for one second. At the second YC, he immediately awarded an IDFK. Something refreshing to see.

    One can say his attitude is too aggressive and confrontational when he spots an unsporting behaviour (remember yellow cards for dive in U-21 EURO). It's his style and it seems it's accepted by powers-to-be.

    In the second half, FCSB had two penalty appeals rejected by Slovenian. Immediately after the second one, Lazio launched their counterattack and scored. In both cases penalties could've been given, imo, but being a referee observer I would have had a big dillemma to classify them as clear important mistakes.

    Apart from that, the only FCSB's goal has been scored with hand.

    Maybe too relaxed Vincic in the second half?

      No, not always. If the goal scored with the hand is no handball, and the questionable situations are backed, there will be no deduction. Why lower a grade, if a decision is backed? And in case they are not, it would be 7.9 (or even 7.4), not 8.0.

      Referee is supportable in both penalty appeals in my opinion. There are some arguments in favor of a whistle, but the same for the contrary decision.
      About the first clip: very strict approach by Vinčić, it is rare to see a referee stopping the game to book a player for dissent. Very well done. Here in Italy our players are not accustomed to that because most of the referees are lenient regarding such situations. I must be honest.
      Excellent decision to wait before whistling foul before 5-0 by Lazio, in case of advantage gesture, he couldn't have recalled the foul.
      Finally, about the goal by FCSB, here in Italy we come to a conclusion: all goals scored by hand or arm are disallowed for "common sense". Even though situations on the pitch are fully supportable by book, there is this trend. But of course in that case we can't see any evidence or clear gesture by the player in order to commit a deliberate act, so the Slovenian will be surely backed again.
      Based on these incidents, I would say that he did well in front of a committee member. He will surely get another game, maybe EL Quarterfinal.

      Perfect advantage prior to 5-0, although I did not feel the ref was going to show to PK in case the goal was not scored.
      But, at this level, the referee must not stop promising attack in order to give YC. He should have waited for the play to be stopped and only then show the YC.

    I have a feeling that Mateu Lahoz could be appointed for the next CL matchday. On Monday March 5th, De Burgos is appointed with Yuste Jiménez in LaLiga, which is somehow strange as he is usually appointed with Díaz Pérez del Palomar when available, who just happens to be Mateu Lahoz AR2. Moreover, Yuste Jiménez has been Undiano's AR2 for some time now, so that would rule him out. That leaves also the possibility of seeing Fernández Borbalán, but then there would have been no impediment for Díaz Pérez del Palomar to be with De Burgos.

    So, all in all, I think Mateu Lahoz could have been appointed for either March 6th or March 7th, and, considering his recent appointments, it could be Tottenham - Juventus. Of course, this is only a prediction and not information.

      I'm not so expert about that, but of course it depends on the severity of the injury. If there aren't complications, a month is enough to recover. Then, after this time you can be back in training and officiating games. So I guess Kuipers has already spent his "recovery time" and now he is maybe back to training. On next weeks we could see him in Eredivisie. I hope he can get a game in EL soon, maybe possible for Round of 16 second legs (15/03)?

    Interesting. Suárez was desperately looking for the YC in the final minutes so he could miss Las Palmas-Barcelona (because next one is against Atlético), but referee Alberola Rojas, who already knew it, decided not to applicate LOTG and didn't show any YC to him in 3 very clear actions.

      Alba and Suarez was trying to get YC so they could clear cards. Alba got it but referee knew in that point what Suarez was doing so he didnt gave him YC.

      I disagree. Suarez started to want to hurt the opponents just to get a card. A referee can't just ignore that because he knows why Suarez did it. The proper way is for the referee to follow the book and then the federation punishing Suarez and Alba after the game for their shameful display.

      In Italy VAR is going weird during last weeks. Of course, it doesn’t depend on the technology itself but mostly on referees’ decisions.
      An absurd penalty has just been awarded to Lazio after a review for a handball (the ball hit the hip of a player and then bounced on the hand). Manganiello now has lost control of the game, despite some good performances so far.
      This is not the first time that handballs are misjudged. There’s still lot of work to do but something has to be changed: I’d suggest that VAR doesn’t intervene for handballs unless that are relevant for a goal scoring.

      I fully agre with you. Sassuolo - Lazio was another very difficult game for the referee, Manganiello.
      I think VAR was not allowed to intervene there because it wasn't a clear mistake by referee. In my opinion not even a punishable handball. In any case, what I don't like is this trend by some referees to use VAR as personal tool for rewatching some missed or wrongly assessed incidents, but they should also consider: was it an obvious mistake? In this case, it wasn't. We have big issues already from the beginning of this season in serie A with deliberate handballs. It is the most difficult topic to discuss, I of course admit that it is impossible to find consistency, but we see too many weird and absurd calls.
      Some referees use it, other referees are reluctant.
      About Sassuolo - Lazio, there were also other incidents, as reported, including a straight RC for VC, and another straight RC for SFP (in this case VAR had to intervene, because referee had missed it). Very challenging game but surely control was lost already at the end of first half. Sassuolo players didn't accept the officiating at all.

Healthy dicussions and debates are what makes that makes this blog so lively :) We never disrespect your view but we just share various ideas in the particular context... Also as Chefren said, the English is never an issue... I myself come from an Asian country where about 60% of the population don't speak English and we are more comfortable with our regional languages... I'm sure Peter also didn't mean to hurt you in any way but if he did so unknowingly we apologise on behalf of him from this blog :) I hope we will have lots of discussions on various aspects of refereeing in the coming days...       9' in my opinion RC for SFP, luckily the player didn't suffer a serious injury but this was a very dangerous challenge, made with excessive force. YC maybe not a very clear mistake, so I think for this reason no VAR intervention, but for me at least 90% RC 10% YC.

      12' Clear SFP, correct VAR intervention. Referee couldn't have the exact perception of what replay showed later.

      18' This is a paramount example of VAR importance. In this case it was almost impossible on the pitch for both referee and AR to detect and understand the last touch and then to assess the offside position. Well done.

      43' Correct penalty, nothing to add there.

      90'+2 Given the position where the foul occurred, one could say it wasn't a 100% promising attack, but YC is absolutely justified there, because player showed to be totally disinterested in playing the ball, with the only aim to stop the opponent near the sideline. YC is absolutely appropriate decision there.

      These situations are always difficult to assess. Yesterday we had a similar case in a serie B game: player on the ground and touch by arm / hand in that position. Referee whistled penalty.
      I think that both decisions are supportable there, because there aren't specific criteria. If in the opinion of the referee, player increased his body's volume or tried to block the ball, then penalty should be whistled.
      But mostly in my opinion these kinds of touch are not intentional, you punish them because the action looks always like a save. Nobody can question...

      Direction in US and Canada over the last year (or so) has been to penalize this with the logic that once you make that last resort slide, you've opened yourself up for this, and if the ball contacts your arm (similar to the play above), then... too bad. Handling.

    According to the laws of the game it is not deliberate. But I think the wording should be changed. Because we have seen thousands of handling called when arms are in unnatural position for example but still not deliberate.
