Tomorrow second appointment with another press conference about refereeing after Group Stage.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/fifa-referee-team-to-brief-media-after-group-stage
It is very nice to read that FIFA is showing so much attention about refereeing, they understand that there are many people interested in that. On previous WC editions, I don't remember so many media activities about refereeing.
Maybe they will also explain the decisions behind some key incidents, and we will know more.
However, this time I will not cover the press conference live, as it will be in the only day without matches, I need definitely some rest :) You are free of adding comments, I will publish a specific discussion for that. Thank you for your participation during the tournament, so far has been a success for the blog ;)
What time will this press conference be, and will we be able to watch?
Delete3:00pm local time (CET+1 hour)
Delete2:00pm CET
Online streaming should be here:

I would like to see transparency regarding key incidents, and how that will affect some referees. They could chose a few most controversial decision to explain.
ReplyDeleteMazic can go far since Serbia is eliminated. Hope he reachs SF or even Final !
ReplyDeleteDo you know whether the appointments for France v Argentina and Uruguay v Portugal will be released today ?
ReplyDeleteMost probably on the press conference tommorrow.
DeleteThere are 4 matches left in the group fase
I hope today to respect the 48 hours-before rule as it was for all games so far...
DeleteNot the standard 2 days before a match practise??
DeleteIndeed, 24 hours seems very short
DeleteI am certain that appointed referees know internally, it's just a case of PR by FIFA, Collina and Busacca.
DeleteExactly Mikael, I have the same feeling
DeletePR is not of major importance to Ref Comm. As evidenced by their delayed release of Referee assignments and complete lack of transparency.
DeleteI actually agree with Sheriff Castrilli on something! :D
DeleteNow that's some good news! :)
Delete@Sheriff @Soham Honestly you guys remind me of two brothers who quarrel about everything but in the end get on great with each other.
DeleteMazic already in communication with capitains
ReplyDeleteFirst foul in 8', nice...
ReplyDeleteMaybe this is a matter of personal preference but I don't like Mazic's (lack of?) signaling.
ReplyDeleteUSSF referee training is different than European, and ask the referee to do "by the book" signal every time. We use more relaxed signaling for easy fouls, so we can keep some space strict when the game demands.
DeleteWe have an OFR
ReplyDeletePenalty annulled... Danny Makkelie continues to function as an excellent VAR
DeleteVideo, including the signal for dropped ball at the end
Deletehttps://streamja.com/lXk4
Penalty given by Mazic - decision changed after OFR.
ReplyDeleteWas it really a clear and obvious mistake? One can have a different view. At first I thought it was a RC-review due to a possible DOGSO.
DeleteCan't be RC, it was tackle on the ball :)
DeleteYes, since the ball was clearly played at first (very difficult to spot though live), it is NO FOUL, therefore a clear and obvious mistake (which would have ended in a 7.9).
DeleteI must praise though Makkelie's alertness who had the immediate image ready, he really is doing an excellent job as VAR at this World Cup.
It looked more SPA than DOGSO
DeleteYes, I know. However, without any replay, I thought it could be a RC for DOGSO. No penalty is preferable in this case, but I am not 100% sure whether we can speak of a clear and obvious error. It seems like Mazic had some doubts as he didn‘t go for any card - YC would have been mandatory.
DeletePlayer was 8-10 meters in front of the goal, he would score in the next momment. It's dogso IMO
DeleteWhy RC if if penalty would have been allowed? DOGSO for sure, but with genuine attempt to play the ball, so YC
DeleteExactly, if it was a PK than YC would be the right card.
Deletei like any referee willing to have the courage to change his call, especially in this atmosphere.
ReplyDeletewell done.
Good VAR, good Mazic :D
ReplyDeleteCorrect decision from VAR and Mazic to change PK decision. Very hard to spot live if he touched the ball first.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteNever a penalty. Absolutely correct by Mazic to take the call back. Well done Mazic!
DeleteGreat decision. It looked like clear PK, just look the direction of the ball...
ReplyDeleteFrom the referee's angle it was PK and YC for DOGSO.
Good VAR decision!
Was the YC ever going to come?
DeleteRight heel of the Colombian player first touches the ball, changes the directions of the ball, and wins the ball.
ReplyDeleteCORRECT DECISION by Mazic.
On the initial call. Mazic had a bad angle to truly judge if there was a touch on the ball or on the player first.
One of the things that I've noticed about Video Review, in terms of whether or not we go to an OFR, is that whether or not the referee had a good view of the incident seems to be more important than whether or not the original decision was supportable.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI don’t think it should be considered as « clear mistake », therefore I disagree with the VAR decision of calling Mazic
ReplyDeleteI think no penalty was the right call but I also think the penalty call would have been supportable. But we've seen at this World Cup so far that the ability to support a decision is less important in determining the VAR's recommendation than the original positioning and view of the referee.
DeleteThe decision that is better for the game has been made and well done to Makkelie and Mazic!
DeleteHe got the ball only and in a fair way. This was black/white. A clear no foul. So penalty isn’t supportable.
DeleteIt's not that the decision is better for the game. It's about correcting a mistake made by the referee. The touch on the ball was impossible for the referee to see. But other camera angles exist and are available for the referee to watch in order to correct himself.
DeleteIt touched the leg first too so it's not that clear!
DeleteAgreed Soham, you could make an argument for a penalty but it would've been soft for sure, good use of video review
Delete24' Nice strong verbal warning for SEN, that wasn't clear YC
ReplyDeleteEverything was very well managed there, live Mazic whistled a penalty, but it was very difficult to have a good angle.
ReplyDeleteVAR correctly invited Mazic to rewatch and penalty was annulled.
Again, a very good work by Makkelie, this is the second penalty annulled with him as VAR, after Brazil - Costa Rica.
It would have been too penalizing for defender to confirm the call.
👍
DeleteBest VAR so far
Makkelie is must as VAR for the final :)
DeleteMakkelie had no choice but to bail out his countryman Kuipers. Because he fell for one of the most blatant acting jobs and dives by Neymar. A call that Kuipers then tried to justify with the Costa Rican players by falsely claiming that there was contact with the legs.
DeleteIn Mazic call, at first glance too many (including myself) it looked like a PK. However once the play was shown from angles unavailable to Mazic. It showed a clear touch on the ball by the Colombian player. A touch that was impossible for Mazic to see from his positioning.
@Sheriff There was contact with legs when Neymar was falling which is what Kuipers saw and signalled... And of course real time it very much looked a penalty as the Costa Rican player stooped and from the referee's angle that looked like a foul indeed!
DeleteThere was zero contact with Neymars leg. None.
DeleteWhy the need for the VAR to intervene in that situation? If as you say, there "was" contact with the legs that Kuipers supposedly saw. Was it a case of a "clear and obvious mistake" by Kuipers? Or was Makkelie wrong in intervening?
DeleteClear contact with the side of the leg and the hip area of the lower body but that was during the fall!
Delete@Sheriff Of course it was an error by Kuipers. That much contact is never enough for a penalty I think. Moreover this contact happened during the call and Neymar already started falling! So correct intervention by Makkelie and also correct by Kuipers to take the call back!
DeleteKuipers whistled the PK for the supposed contact that happened after Neymar was already falling(diving)? Am I understanding you correctly my friend Soham?
DeleteYes exactly... That's what I feel and that's what the VAR intervention was for... There was some contact before the fall too near the side of the hip area but that was not enough for a penalty IMO!
DeleteBecause of the contact (a light one) no YC for simulation!
DeleteIMO VAR could have choose for which incident he will intervene,
DeletePush was never enough for the PK or Kuipers bad perception that foul was comited with leg.
Either way the right decision was made even if the situation was actually 95% no penalty + 5% penalty... This kind of calls should be taken back and fair enough for Makkelie to intervene... There was contact but IMO not enough for a penalty!
DeleteBut if there is a 5% possibility of it being a PK. Then can it or should it be considered a clear and obvious mistake by Kuipers in whistling it? I'm (as are many others) just trying to figure out this whole VAR thing and when they do and when they don't intervene.
DeleteLike today, it was clear that Mazic has missed a clear and obvious touch on the ball by the Colombian player. Thus the reason Makkelie intervened. But in Kuipers case, was that a clear and obvious mistake made by Kuipers. Or enough of a mistake to warrant Makkelie to intervene?
That is debatable because interpretation varies from person to person... Of course on seeing a replay Kuipers was sure of no penalty... So Makkelie's intervention was good there in my view... There is nothing as 100% so something that's only 5% penalty should be clear and obvious to be overturned to a no penalty... No harm if VAR interferes and the referee is willing to have a 2nd look in a suspicious situation!
DeleteNothing but assumptions about why Kuipers awarded the PK. How I saw it: he signals that Neymar got a push when he wanted to shoot the ball. You first see him make the push gesture and after that he makes the shooting gesture. 'Because there was a push, he was'nt able to shoot.' Ofcourse that does'nt make the PK more or less wrong. Wrong is wrong.
DeleteYou may have a point with the reason. Definitely that must have been explained in the debrief. The thing is there was a push yes but not enough for a penalty. Some might not have intervened but in my eyes Makkelie's intervention was a superb one. In that way they reached the best possible decision in the situation in spite of whether it was a 95% error or whatever!
DeleteI agree, the best VAR so far - it is nice when the referee can feel that he can rely on help from his colleague.
DeleteMazic is trying to keep his cards in his pocket way too much!
ReplyDeleteGood verbal warning, no clear YC in 24'
DeleteEven in the penalty call he didn't give a YC for SPA!
DeleteIf that was SPA, no YC would be only possible decision, because the tackle was on the ball :)
DeleteIt's YC for Dogso or nothing for SPA
Mazic of course didn't detect the tackle on the ball in real time but I didn't see any YC coming out as per his initial interpretation!
DeleteI know. Probably he awaited for VAR check
DeleteOnly Mazic knows :D
DeleteNo penalty was a better decision,bt let us imagine a world without VAR.CLEAR PENALTY
ReplyDeleteCorrect YC in 44' for SPA
ReplyDelete44' First YC for SPA, and that COL player will propably be substituted
ReplyDeleteThank God he gives a YC!
DeleteIs it a clear mistake? Was Neymar PK a clear mistake? Bah
ReplyDeleteIt's relative but you must admit that best decision for match and for the football was taken.
DeleteEven if not a clear mistake or whatever I thought Kuipers made the wrong call at first so good to take the call back!
DeleteMy understanding tells me VAR only intervenes in clear errors. Was it a clear error?
DeleteIMO that should be revised.
DeleteMy idea:
OFR should be possible for every suspicios PK. What do you think?
I think when the best possible decision was made we should appreciate it... It was 95% no penalty and 5% penalty so taking back the call is absolutely correct IMO!
DeleteClear PK they said in swedish TV. Touched the players leg first then he got to the ball.
ReplyDeleteThe guy who said it has zero referee experience and is just a coach. His opinion doesn’t matter, like any ”expert” who has never been a referee.
DeleteWhich match Swedish people are watching? :) :)
Deletemost likely this one because the Japan match is on a channel you have to pay for
DeleteIt was a joke :)
DeletePossible missed YC in 52`
ReplyDeletePossible bisquit, like Denmark-France
ReplyDeleteNot if Japan manage to snatch a goal and tie their match.
DeleteStill a "bisquit"?
DeleteVery lenient approach towards SPA by Mazic.
ReplyDeleteThe exact same manner in which he handled Mexico v Korea. Not a fan of said manner.
DeleteYes even I'm not liking his management today... He is a little passive in this game, I want him to be more proactive than this!
DeleteCould you please give me an example of passive display? Maybe I missed something
DeleteOverall passive and not willing to get too much involved... Maybe it's just to me but that's what I feel!
DeleteYou won't see many better prevention skills but it's ok that we disagree :)
DeleteYes let's agree to disagree... At least 7-8 referees with much better prevention skills have already been on display... And in every case minus this ultra lineancy!
DeleteBorderline decision to play on in 68‘.
ReplyDeleteWhat's borderline there? :o
DeleteI think it's a quite clear no penalty!
DeleteOf course the goalkeeper plays the ball first, but it was both a risky and dangerous tackle that caught the player, too. No penalty is okay, although the tackle was not 100% fair.
DeleteEach YC now is becoming very crucial...
ReplyDeleteEvery YC counts now, fair play ranking decides who will be eliminated.
ReplyDeleteAnd when you have referee's like Irmatov and Mazic who simply refuse to caution. It makes it unfair for the other teams who had other referee's.
DeleteAbsolutely agreed!
DeleteOkay but then is it fair to have card waving referee?
DeleteNo it's not but there's a middle line between being ultra lineant or overly card happy!
DeleteSheriff - When you have referees who call penalty for holding but then you have Brych who doesnt do it? Is it unfair too?
DeleteWe as referee's don't "give" out cards, nor are we "card waivers" as you try to portray us. We as referee's simply enforce The Law's of the Game and issue cards that the players themselves earn. We don't "give" any card, players "earn" them.
DeleteWow, you must be proud on yourself for this philosophic comment. We didn't know that, thanks for explanation.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteProud for having an opinion that differs with yours? No, not at all. No matter how snarky your response is.
DeleteSo much time lost/wasted game after game after game on the pointless, useless, and without a positive end result act of begging the players to not wrestle/hold on each and every set piece or corner. Time that is not made up for in the end.
ReplyDeleteVery proactive Bamlak! Alert against time wasting and trying to prevent it!
ReplyDeleteI am sure he will attend the next WC, he seems to have a sophisticated personality (especially for CAF).
DeleteYes he was very impressive in the U-17 WC in 2017 too... I expect very highly of him too!
DeleteLong term prediction: he whistles AFCON Final 2019 :-)
DeleteMalang Diedhiou and Mehdi Abid Charef will be in the race as well I think!
DeleteFrom Sikazwe's game: Japan afraid of playing, they are just passing the ball each other. Poor scenes at World Cup, where we should see the best football. Very embarrassing for Sikazwe as well.
ReplyDeleteThey are nervous! It happens!
DeleteThey dont want to either concede goal nor get YC
DeleteI don't blame Japan. They're trying to become the only AFC nation to qualify for the 2nd stage
DeleteYou can thank your fellow EURO's Germany and Austria when they way back when set the example for this.
DeleteFour minutes additional time is not consistent.
ReplyDeleteI‘m not happy with Mazic‘s time management. Overall a solid performance with full control, but I‘m not a fan to be honest.
DeleteAnother bad caution management by Mazic... bah!
ReplyDeleteWhich YC he missed?
DeleteHe missed a lot of YC, like usual. I don't like his way of referiing
Delete👍 thanks for the answer
DeleteIncredible scenes in Volgograd, a player from Poland pretended an injury just to allow a substitution (Japan didn't want to throw the ball out). Sikazwe obliged players from Japan to continue to play, if you ask me, excellent decision.
ReplyDeleteI agree Mazic was too lenient in his previous match, but I don't understand the comments today about how lenient he was.
ReplyDeleteWhere were the YCs that he missed, what minute?
Clearly good, expected level performance today. I don't think you can blame him toooooo much on the corrected penalty, in any case this is era of VAR.
Very good sentence "...era of VAR."
DeleteWrong offside from AR2 very poor decision which denied Muriel who was through on goal
ReplyDeleteI only saw maybe 1 missed yc
ReplyDeleteExpected level. Management just like FIFA advice for this tournament.
ReplyDeleteKey moment: PK situation - solved very good by Ref and VAR.
Purpose of VAR is just for these situations. Mažić will get 2 more games.
2 more game mean Quarter and final!
DeleteAre you crazy?
Can be 1/8 and QF or semi
DeleteWhat if he will be horrible in his next match? You'll have to wait for such statements.
DeleteYes of course, he could also take a 1/8 a 1/4 and a semi. But i don't think the other 30 referee will just watch world cup from the sofa
DeleteTizio there is NO reason to ask me am I crazy.
DeleteYou are just no superpartes.
DeleteOne thing is being impartial as you said, but that is no reason to be rude. Just behave...
DeleteMust write this here because there is more comments. What a shameful match was JPN-PLN. We saw antifootball in advantage time. Well done for Sikazwe btw.
ReplyDeleteFIFA MUST PUNISH BOTH TEAMS!
DeleteFIFA should punish themselves. This is what happens with the yellow card advance system. Bad rule.
DeleteIt's a bad rule when your referee's have no consistency in how and when they issue cautions. You have Irmatov who allows his match bocome an all out battle. Mazic who goes out of his way to keep the cards in his pockets. Regardless of the constant and systematical fouling a team is committing. And then you have Pitana and Brych who correctly punish players by using their cards. No consistency at all.
DeleteThen you have referees who gives PK for holding and then Brych who doesnt. No consistency at all.
DeleteIn general Mazic just with expected level. For heated clashes his style is IMO too leniant. I see him only in one more game in ko-phase and even that not for sure. Sorry to write that cause I appreciated and defended him long time but I expected him at least a bit more consequent.
ReplyDeleteHe was way better than half referees who missed penaltys, second YCs , etc. ;)
DeleteWrong offside from AR2 very poor decision which denied Muriel who was through on goal
ReplyDeleteGenuine question regarding penalty denied to Senegal due to VAR: I understand that Colombia player had a light touch on Senegal before a light touch on the ball and that he only took Senegal player down after light touch on the ball. Doesn't it matter that had Colombia not taken the player down, he had a 99% chance of scoring? That is, because the touch on the ball was not any where near enough to clear the ball, he did not "earn" the right to take the player down without a foul.
ReplyDeleteThis kind of issue seems very important for VAR.
@possible Senegal penalty:
ReplyDeleteTo me, it seems that the contact with the attacker's leg is made at the same time or even slightly before the contact with the ball.
Therefore it is not a clear no foul in my opinion and therefore I would even say that it was a crucial mistake by Mazic to take the decision back - and I am aware this is a minority opinion here.
Taking a decision back can never be a crucial mistake if the decision finally made is supportable... Plus the clear and obvious mistake thing will be broadened for the KO stage so we will see many more OFRs in doubtful situations!

ReplyDeleteGET OUT OF FINANCIAL MESS WITH THE HELP OF drbenjaminfinance@gmail.com
I have been in financial mess for the past months, I’m a single mum with kids to look after. My name is REBECCA MICHAELSON, and am from Ridley Park, Pennsylvania. A couple of weeks ago My friend visited me and along our discussion she told me about DR BENJAMIN OWEN FINANCE of drbenjaminfinance@gmail.com that he can help me out of my financial situation, I never believed cause I have spend so much money on different loan lenders who did nothing other than running away with my money. She advised, I gave it a try because she and some of her colleagues were rescued too by this Godsent lender with loans to revive their dying businesses and paying off bills. so I mailed him and explain all about my financial situation and therefore took me through the loan process which was very brief and easy. After that my loan application worth $278,000.00USD was granted, all i did was to follow the processing and be cooperative and today I am a proud business owner sharing the testimony of God-sent Lender. You can as well reach him through the Company Email drbenjaminfinance@gmail.com
