OT Do you agree with this offside call? Correct decision to consider the player as active once he ran towards the ball? Without the offside flag, referee would have assigned a corner kick. Sorry for the quality of the video. https://streamable.com/lxwim
Not offside for me. While he's active, he's not interfering with an opponent here as no defender is going towards the ball to make a play on it so no impacting the ability of an opponent.
Law 13.2 seems to be clear that an offside player is only penalised if they become involved in active play - by interfering with play/touching the ball, or if they interfere with an opponent. That player did neither so it should be a corner.
”A player in an offside position may be penalised before playing or touching the ball, if, in the opinion of the referee, no other team-mate in an onside position has the opportunity to play the ball.”
Thank you for your opinions. I also think that offside is not punishable but one can understand why AR raised the flag. It is a very difficult situation to read, you see that player is running towards the ball and he wants to play it. So you maybe tend to raise the flag. But the choice is definitely not the right one: the player had not influenced any opponent by his action, nobody couldn't prevent the corner kick there. So for sure a very didactic case of study...
In my opinion the choice by UEFA was made because the decision by Fritz on the pitch had been clearly wrong. If he punished the alleged hair pulling - well, simply said - this never happened. But if Fritz had reported the previous kick by Cristiano Ronaldo (I think this action was missed), the player could have received even three matches of ban.
Ronaldo's hand is not on the Sevilla players head long enough to have actually "pulled hair". I see Ronaldo in what I guess you can consider "an aggressive manner" move his hand towards and make contact with the top of the head of the fallen Sevilla player. Of course if we want to be super strict, by the letter of the Law referee. Then yeah, totally supportable Red Card. Hands have zero business in or around an opponents head, face neck area. However I totally support UEFA's 1 match ban for Ronaldo. And I would have been just as supportive had UEFA decided to rescind the Red Card. But that would have left zero doubt about a mistake and would have totally exposed Brych and his crew.
I fully agree with Sheriff, just to make it clear what I mean for hair pulling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyiyHdUf27E Referee of this game was Orsato he didn't send off Chiellini...
The hair pulling is clear. If you don't want to see it, then it is up to you. Whether you consider it to deserve a RC or not is a matter for discussion, but I think it was a fully correct decision. It is not so different to spit on to another player, form my point of view. BTW, Chefren, the hand movement is the same in Chiellini and in Ronaldo's situation. The only difference is for how long he holds the hair and the length of it.
One final (but quite important) remark: it is not Sevilla. It was Valencia. I have to say, however, that Valencia's kit this season resembles some of Sevilla's, but it is because this year it is the 100th birthday of Valencia and they tried to reproduce their first kit colours.
I respect all your opinions and I'm happy to have nice discussions here on the blog, but for me this is never a RC in reality. Of course you can justify it by book, but it is not 100% clear that Cristiano Ronaldo wants to pull hair. This is my point of view.
What everyone can see is the head of the defender at the situation, it is moving upwards with the hand for a while, clear thing, Chiellini actions are softer, he only pullit, while Ronaldo does a shring out.
The very very soft contact is totally irrelevant compared to the simulation movement made by the attacking player. So for me VAR should have corrected the decision to YC for Thauvin.
@Vlad: I posted this already in the other thread, but you were interested in the equalizing goal by Chelsea yesterday, which has been checked by VAR for a potential offside situation. I don't know if you have already seen it, but in case you haven't, here it comes. => https://streamable.com/qp8ir
OT: With the AFC Champions League Semi-Final pairings set. And keeping in mind the Referee exchange program between CONCACAF and AFC. I wonder what CONCACAF referee along with his crew will be chosen to represent CONCACAF in Asia.
What semifinal match up will they be assigned to? Will it be Al Sadd (QAT) vs Persepolis (IRN) or will it be Kashima Antlers (JAP) vs Suwon Bluewings (KOR)? Will it be a 1st Leg match or a deciding 2nd Leg match?
Ravshan Irmatov and his crew officiated the 2nd Leg semifinal match between Club America (MEX) vs FC Toronto (CAN/"MLS"). Played on April 10, 2018 at Estadio Azteca.

All these referee have some AFC Cup matches here. Abdul Hannan is at the final game of AFF U-15 this year and were in Muhammad Taqi's team at friendly JPN-CRC. Shukri Al-Hunfush (KSA) were at this tournament too so that he can't officiate in Saudi league now. Muhammad Nazmi bin Nasaruddin had his AFF U-19 2 years ago.
I want to ask question. Who will be VAR at AFC Asian Cup next year?
Very good performance by Clément Turpin in OGC Nice vs Paris Saint-Germain. A very strong 8.4.
Key match incidents:
Disallowed 0-2 goal after VAR intervention https://pasteboard.co/HG9wmRK.png
2nd YC Cyprien (Nice) for reckless use of arm https://streamable.com/mefvp
Penalty incident, play-on call confirmed by VAR https://streamable.com/kbmq4
Very good onside at 0-3 goal https://pasteboard.co/HGa0EVM.png
All cards were spot on. Cyprien x2 (for SPA by holding and reckless use of arm), Dante for reckless knee kick, Mbappé for reckless stamp.
An interesting situation with, imo, reckless tackle from Nice player when Neymar avoided being hit. Turpin issued a warning in the next stoppage but it was not enough for my taste. Thoughts? https://streamable.com/h3ab9
Everything is correct there, a special mention for the penalty appeal, when I watched it for the first time, it looked a clear penalty, but replay definitely explained the decision taken by referee. About the last incident you mentioned, for sure a YC could have been issued, it would have been better than a warning. Turpin keeps his excellent form, he can achieve definitely much this season at UEFA level...
Good looking gestures by Latre at Barcelona, but strange positioning, often converting into wrong by turning the back to the competent assistant and being in front of the attack. Something not good to be seen on that level, but who knows, he could have had lack of belief at his colleagues.
Martínez Munuera has just officiated Madrid derby. Some discussion about a (IMO) grey area PK for handball asked by Atlético, with no VAR intervention.
But, I liked his overall performance, never seemed to lose control and had full acceptance from players.
OT: IMO very good performance from Bebek in Croatian bigest derby between Hajduk and Dinamo. Of course match will be remembered for terrible performances from both teams, some even say this was their worst match ever, but Bebek's performance was very good. He chose very lenient way to handle the match, solved critical situations verbally and not by booking players which resulted in very small number of cards, only 4 were shown, all of them were correct(2 for SPA-Theophile,Palaversa,1 for kicking ball away-Hamza and another one for too much talking-Ivanovski). Maybe he missed or didnt give on purpose 2-3 cards, but it was the deby so he chose that lenient way and most importantly,he was pretty consistent, which was one of his flaws in past years when he officiated matches between these two rivals.
So in Croatia noone is talking about Bebek which means he has done his job very well.
Europa League 20/21! Wow - we are going to be seeing a great amount of officials used each matchday if they appoint full VAR teams!

Yeah, technically, under the LOTG, it's not an offside, but using some common sense... To be fair, I would accept both calls.

Not everyone has long hair but the movement is pretty much the same. I can see it only as excessive force.
