which matches will be led by Skomina?
ReplyDeleteI predict Ajax-Bayern on MD6.
DeleteSo we have two Italians in a row for Benfica and (the same) two Italians for both legs of Lyon-Manchester. It was obviously difficult to find suitable games for Orsato and Rocchi, therefore some of the "rules" needed to be broken.
ReplyDeleteKruzliak with Batta in an important match confirms that he is on the edge to Elite.
Brych and Makkelie with rather low-profile matches. Interesting that they did not have problems to give Brych a Swiss team after the WC. For Makkelie I expected a bit more in this group stage after his QF last season.
The rest are normal appointments, I think.
I, too, expected a better match for Makkelie. Perhaps the fact that he had to appear on MD5 (due to CWC duties) made the options very limited.
DeleteVery good match for Kruzliak in front of Batta. His path to the Elite seems to be wide open.
Both Rocchi and Makkelie have surely forced appointments due to the fact that they will miss MD6. For Rocchi, it is a very good game in any case, for Makkelie one can't say the same. He surely deserved a better match but the management of some appointments was particular in this group stage. Kuipers presence was also another reason for which Makkelie couldn't get other matches in different groups. However, Makkelie could have handled Juventus - Valencia in this set, for sure something better than CSKA - Plzen (said with all the respect for the teams).
DeleteOrsato is another forced appointment with an Italian referee officiating Benfica again. It is the very last chance for the Portuguese team to qualify.
Kruzliak with the last exam before his possible promotion: gamer to be watched carefully. Turpin back in a top clash after having missed Juventus - Manchester United. He can get also another appointment on MD6 if required, to recover the previous missed game.
Oliver goes on with low profile games after Real Madrid - Juventus, I think that committee doesn't want to expose him again, but surely there is always trust as he has been always assigned to CL.
Finally, I hope to see a very convincing performance by Collum this time. He needs to find consistency on long term.
Who's the ref of PSG v Liverpool?
ReplyDeleteThe appointment for this game will be released tomorrow, as it is planned on Wednesday.

DeleteChris Kavanagh is reffing the Merseyside Derby on Sunday. Massive Surprise by PGMOL but indicates that they want him to challenge Oliver and Taylor in the years to come.
ReplyDeleteI think hes only been refereeing professional football for about 5-6 years so they definitely see him as the next Michael Oliver.

Troubles in Athene before the match. AEK supporters starts with throwing Molotov Cocktails in the direction of the away corner.
ReplyDelete9': correct penalty call by Makkelie. A few seconds before the foul whistled, there had been another contact in the middle of the box.
ReplyDelete13': possible RC for SFP to Oblyakov (CSKA), YC was the minimum there.
ReplyDeleteI think a yellow is correct as it was the top of the foot that made contact and not the studs.
Deletehttps://streamable.com/9hb99
You are right, I said RC because I tgought contact had happened with studs. That's wrong, so YC fully OK and I would say the appropriate decision.
DeleteWrong YC given by Oliver to #20 Ajax.
ReplyDeleteI politely disagree with your assessment. Very good yellow card in my opinion as the Ajax defender, Schöne, makes contact with opponent high up on shin with studs after stretching to play the ball. Bent leg and low impact/speed make this a YC instead of RC. Excellent trailing eye from Oliver.
DeleteI agree with DB
Deletehttps://streamable.com/rbth4
DeleteIMO penalty whistled by Makkelie was very soft, not saying wrong but too soft for my taste
ReplyDeleteClear trip on the leg and no contact with the ball. Easy penalty
DeleteVery clear penalty for me, as explained by Gardan
DeleteWho knows what happened to Svein Oddvar Moen?
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed very strange that he didn't get any single appointment in both CL and EL group stages so far.
DeleteOverrated Referee + Pushed too fast + Poor feel for the game + Overly lenient approach bordering on an unwillingness to whistle fouls or show cards = An early end to a spotty career
Delete'27' and '28' missed penalty for Moscow pushed in the back just before the shot. That's why he missed. And the second also
ReplyDeletePlayer is loading up for a shot and just as he is about to shoot gets a clear push and loses balance. Always a penalty
Delete@Gardam If you watched carefully you would have recognized that the two moments you mention actually are one and the same situation right 🤔
DeleteAnd what about Manuel Grafe? On th 10th of November he officiated Deutsch Clasico, and still in FIFA list, but NOT A SINGLE UEFA match since 2016.😬😬😬
ReplyDeleteThe negative turning point of his career was Real Madrid - Juventus in 2013, after that he got only Europa League games and then, reaching a certain age, was forgotten by committee.
Deletethanks a lot for the answer! would be great to have big article about former Elite refs (including those who retired and still are in FIFA list, but not on spot like Grafe). How do you think, is it possible to us all to gather such an information?
DeleteI just have watched RM-Juve 2013. Nothing criminal from my piont of view. Could you please remind me a bit?
DeleteWell, of course I don't know the opinion of committee about this performance, but it was very controversial with a penalty to Real and then a sending off. Very likely his decisions were assessed as wrong... in any case, if I remember correctly, he was not an Elite referee, but he was getting big games. This was the last one. After that, there were other German newcomers, so for him no room.
DeleteAbout other referees who were about to reach top level, one can mention Todorov from Bulgaria, as example. In 2012 he got CL group stage and he looked to be close to Elite promotion, but then his career suddenly changed: demotion after demotion he became a UEFA Category 3. Now he officiates in Youth games and Regions Cup...
A similar story occurred to Russian Nikolaev, from Champions League to UEFA last category but now he has retired...
Also, about the referee from România who were very close to the top. They were Cristian Balaj, now is retired and he is a tv observer for the refs. The other one is Alexandru Tudor who ends his career this year. By the way, Tudor was the favorite referee for the ex-head of the roumanian refs, Ion Craciunescu, who backed him, when he got big mistakes. Both of them had games in CL with Barcelona and they got some problems and they not get promoted to the Elite. And they were stuck in the first category till the new generation came.
DeleteLet’s not forget that Gräfe is known for being outspoken, blunt and honest when things are going the wrong way within the German referee and football community. A trait valued by those with a heart, but disliked by those who are driven by political agendas. He has been highly rated by German players and fans for many years.
DeleteGrafe was observed by Hugh Dallas in Real-Juve , November 2013. After that game, he faded from Uefa radars...
DeleteAnother penalty whistled by Makkelie, this time to Plzen.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a correct call, attacker was clever there.
Correct PK to AJAX and second YC.
ReplyDeleteWell spot PK by Oliver. Handball and 2nd YC for #10 AEK
ReplyDeleteYes a very good call.
DeleteCorrect NO PENALTY decision by Makkelie but rather AAR2 in 90'+3, the last seconds of the game. It was the attacker going against keeper, no significant contact for a whistle. Maybe extremely tight offside of the same player involved, but impossible to say.
ReplyDeleteMissed handball for Roma in 7' .. Seems like it was on the line?
ReplyDelete7': handball by Carvajal (Real Madrid) very likely missed by all officials. It is impossible to say whether inside or outside the box. This would have been impossible also for VAR.
ReplyDeleteI think Turpin saw it and hesitated, but decided not to whistle it.
Deletehttps://streamable.com/deqjn
DeleteFree kick for me. Anyway, I wonder why he didn't even call foul.
DeleteI think he gave the advantage, you can see his arm went up
DeleteNathan: he did a ”no foul” sign.
DeleteExcellent 2 consecutive and correct onsides in Shakhtar goals by Kruzliak's AR1.
ReplyDeleteCorrect YC for Modric from Turpin. Quite delayed, maybe because of AR advice.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/3dva5
DeleteWell, looks like besides Turpin's handball incident (doesn't seem to be a PK so not a crucial mistake) not many problems for referees until now.
ReplyDeletePlayers helped him alot,it wasnt "crazy" game.
DeleteGood teamwork. No offside in Real Madrid goal as Roma defender plays the ball.
ReplyDeletelittle luck for Hoffenheim with referee decisions this CL season, but the sending off is at least supportable.
ReplyDeleteMaybe first YC harsh, second is fully correct...
DeleteBrave decision so far, but, isn't there a little short pulling to Szalái just before the action?
Delete*shirt pulling.
Delete1st caution: https://ok.ru/video/976524085878?fromTime=784
Delete2nd caution: https://ok.ru/video/976524085878?fromTime=843
I am fully okay with both decisions. First one is a bit soft, but IMO well detected use of studs by Kružliak, even if the actual result of the tackle was minimal. Second is quite dark YC.
To be honest I am not really convinced by his self-presentation at the 2nd YC, this is not the confident young referee I saw at Partizan - Beşiktaş or Wales - Denmark; shame this happened under Batta's eyes.
Still, Slovak should be pretty safe bet for promotion, surely he has done enough to deserve it.
The less I say about this match the better, but I for one missed a line when it came to foul detection and disciplinary management to say the very least.
DeleteIMO the first yellow is fully justified. In the 1st replay shown after the 'tackle' you can see that the player actually rakes his studs down the lower shin of the fouled player.
Deletehttps://streamable.com/d0m1v
Correctly disallowed goal by Collum in Turin, I think in cooperation with AAR1. Player had scored by hand.
ReplyDeletehttps://ok.ru/video/1355231857386?fromTime=1040
DeleteVery good decision, well done!
2nd YC issued by Kruzliak.
ReplyDeleteGood night for UCL refereeing. Not a single crucial mistake in 8 matches, IMO.
ReplyDeleteDid Fellaini handle the ball before scoring in the man utd match?
ReplyDeleteHe did and it was punishable. Crucial mistake by Brych's team.
DeleteI really enjoyed William Collum's performance in Juventus v Valencia.
ReplyDeleteHe showed the most important skills in refereeing:
- cool head and great tactical preparation for this game (didn't fall for many Juventus' shouts for penalties)
- clear line and practically faultless in foul detection and card selection
- made the game fluent by effective management (short but strong messages)
- chose the best approach (didn't allow too much of physical play what was fully understandable after the first game and the high-paced game involing many duels, many fouls and many cards showed it was the best possible approach)
Willie and team should be congratulated for how well they handled that hot game. Well done, boys!
I agree, but I would have preferred a YC for simulation to one of the many Juventus players who threw themselves to the ground with no contact at all, or a contact caused by themselves. Mandzukic comes to my mind.
DeleteIn the 1st half there were 5 situations when Juventus asked for a penalty after interventions on Mandzukic, Dybala, Pjanic, Chiellini and Bonucci. I don't say that all of them were penalties but I see that (lately) everything which is in grey area is judged against Juventus (same happened in Juventus- Manchester)
Deletesays the guy with a juventus logo...
DeleteI reckon hey Victor
DeleteTwitter video of Fellaini's handball prior to qualifying goal: https://twitter.com/sergioulloa1/status/1067541406531682305
ReplyDeleteVery difficult to spot but absolutely deliberate act by Fellaini.
DeleteThe weird thing is that, in my opinion, this touch had not a real impact on the ball, and without it, he would have played the ball in the same manner. However, this doesn't matter: clear foul. I wouldn't blame so much Brych because it was almost impossible to detect, but well, very crucial.
VAR is needed there...
I don't really blame Brych… but in the end, it is a mistake that VAR could have solved. It is a very decisive goal, as it allows his team to qualify… in the 91th minute. The mistake is the same if it happens in the first minute of MD1 or in the current context, but the "appearance" is not. I have already seen people stating that Valencia have been sent home with an irregular goal, which, unfortunately, is completely true, even if there are many more reasons behind their position in the standings.
DeleteWell, this is another reason to implement VAR. Almost impossible to spot it live from a long distance, but it's there.
DeleteFrom groups E - F - G - H Shakhtar Donetsk - Olympique Lyonnais will be the only very crucial game for qualification on MD6, a direct play off.
ReplyDeleteAbout the rest, first and second place to be decided, qualification to Europa League, I think that in all these games we could see Category 1 referees. There will be for sure big room for them, I would prefer to see Elite referees in Europa League handling crucial games.
May be Liverpool - Napoli too
DeleteI was talking only about the matches of the groups played yesterday.. of course this evening we will add other crucial games to count.
DeleteTFF announced today that turkish referees Huseyin Gocek and Halis Ozkahya will be suspended until further notice. Gocek was center ref and Ozkahya was VAR for this past weekends Galatasaray-Konyaspor match. Gocek gave a contreversial 90th minute "phantom" penalty and VAR did not intervene. Thus the suspensions. Interesting that both refs are in action this week in europe.
ReplyDeleteThe handball penalty + 2nd YC given by Michael Oliver yesterday in AEK Athens vs. Ajax.
