  1. Chefren I don't know what rosseti has seen in Stuart attwell var post...
Every UCL match day he has been among the selected var officials....either with English ref of Scottish refs...Euro 2020 var post for him sure alongside Antony taylor...

  2. No Bastien in MD 3 and 4. So I guess the second YC in FK Crvena zvezda - Olympiakós FC was considered as wrong. Not a good sign for the next euro for him at least as main referee.

    1. I think we should await the UEL appointments - maybe he will appear on thursday. Some of the UEL matches might be even more interesting than some of the UCL matches.

Cakir, kuipers, brych and skomina I am not sure all of them will make euro 2020 again...

    3. Because of this Ali Palaybiyik got his debut

  5. Cakir is the only "big" referee wihout appointement in MD 3 and 4 and Makkelie for exemple with 3 matches already. Did he do something wrong in his first match?

  6. It is 99,9% that they will go to EURO 2020! It will be their last big tournament!

  7. I have a feeling that Palabıyık was not a planned debut and he just replaced Cakir on previous matchday, since he is out from the whole MATCHDAY 3 and 4.

    2. Or Makkelie is replacing Cakir in Dortmund. Many possibilities here...
Is anyone else missing from MD3 and MD4, who normally should get an appointment (except the previously injured Kassai and Kralovec)?

  9. Also Madden with a 3rd appointment already.
Besides that and Cakir's absence an expectable set of appointments.
I would however have considered Lokomotiv-Juve the bigger match in group D and therefore switched Buquet and Skomina, but it's not clear.

Is he performing better in recent times - I remember it was said that he was having a 'difficult period' for some years?

  11. Firstly, let me say that I believe this blog as its' best when it maintains an equally critical and objective style for all referees and performances, and cheerleading - as we saw yesterday - works to the detriment of the professionalism and status of the blog.

On another note - I really do not know what to make of Felix Zwayer handling the Real Madrid - Galatasaray game observed by Marc Batta.

    1) Is the appointment to the RLMGAL game seen as a 'reward' for recent performances? Is it seen as a standard appointment? Or even a 'punishment' for recent performances?

    2) Is Batta there because the game is seen as a test for Zwayer, in either perceived good or bad shape?
Or to 'monitor' his general progress in a 'normal' game?

    3) Is Zwayer's EURO participation in doubt?
Or is this a signal that the German is 'reconsidered' for sth bigger?

I would be interested in other users' thoughts.

    1. IMO this is a standard appointment. After Real's win in the first leg, the importance is not that high anymore. And e.g. Brych's game is less sonorous, but probably more crucial for the group outcome. The other two possible matches could rather have been seen as a "reward" (CHEAJA) or "punishment" (ATAMCI).
About Batta, I don't know. Neither a consideration for a final nor danger for his EURO participation seems very likely.

  12. Ref545 - Err no. I like Cakir but it was a mistake to not show the red card and I personally think it was also a mistake for the VAR not to get involved.
    A reminder of the challenge:
    https://streamable.com/wz20x
Could easily have been a broken leg. So endangered the safety. Hence Serious Foul Play.

  13. Well I guess we have our answer. Brych is not injured.

  14. Last year: Belgrade, 6.11. Red Star-Liverpool, referee Mateu Lahoz.
This year: Belgrade, 6.11. Red Star-Tottenham, referee Del Cerro Grande.
So, at the same date, at home, Red Star will play again against English team who was also runner-up (as Liverpool a year before), and we will have again referee from Spain. Everything is the same, and I hope the result will be the same (2-0 for home side :)))).

  15. About appointment in Belgrade, I think it is interesting to underline that we will have a very trusted Elite referee, while 2 weeks ago in London for the same game we had a Category 1 at his debut.
A matchday after and more clear standings are for sure main reason, but mostly I think that this choice is based on the fact that Serbian side is by far more and more good team at home than away games. Indeed we know the amazing atmosphere in Belgrade. Differently, in London game was very easy for referee and there weren't troubles. As committee was able to "read the game" and give a suitable appointment 15 days ago, again, it was very wise to appoint an Elite referee in this case.

  16. For me Cakir, Kuipers, Skomina, big names, big refs. I like Kuipers and Cakir. And big compliment for Rosetti, Dallas. They gave young refs chances. I like also the VAR project, Roberto is the best in this, and good that we have more VAR experts now. So it's nothing special anymore. Next season all games VAR. Good message from UEFA

    3. Max Iva - This is a misconception that is rife in the media. The reason England didn't have anyone at the World Cup is because Mark Clattenburg left and he was England's nominee. It simply wouldn't have been fair to all the other referees around the world to replace him last minute with someone who hadn't gone through the world cup selection process.

  21. The second division match between Holstein Kiel and VfL Bochum experienced one of the oddest penalties ever, because an unused substitute caused it. Now, the IFAB says: The procedure should be different in the future.
In the game between Kiel and Bochum there was a penalty, although Bochum's Silvere Ganvoula clearly missed the goal in the 37th minute - because the Kiel substitute Michael Eberwein kicked the ball to his goalkeeper Ioannis Gelios to allow him to quickly perform the goal kick. The big problem: The ball had not completely left the field.
The video assistant told referee Timo Gerach that Eberwein had intervened in the game. In accordance with the rules Gerach decided on penalty. The intervention of the VAR initially seemed correct, it was about a penalty situation, and these may be checked by the VAR. Ganvoula strode to the point and scored the 1-1 for Bochum. But then questions came up among the referees and video assistants. Jochen Drees, Project Manager VAR at DFB, therefore asked for an assessment of IFAB.
And now they say that they no longer want to see such interventions by the video assistant. "According to the rules everything was right," says IFAB CEO Lukas Brud in an interview with sportschau.de. "But the intervention of the VAR should not necessarily have happened, because that contradicts the sense and spirit of the rule."
Brud talks about a paragraph in Rule 7, according to which the referee must interrupt the game, for example, if a team official or a substitute player intervenes in the game. The game should then be continued with a direct free kick or in the penalty area with a penalty kick, as happened in Kiel. The DFB has actually acted correctly in the situation - but it was wrong.
"The substitute from Kiel instinctively stopped the ball to make the game fast, and certainly not to change the game situation to the detriment of Bochum," says Brud. There was a gap in the rules in earlier times, which allowed intervention from the outside as a team official or a substitute - punished pretty mildly by a referee ball or an indirect free kick. Only for intentional external interference that changes the game, the rule was introduced in 2016. In the situation in Kiel, therefore, a warning would have been better, said Brud.
The basis for excluding VARs in such tight but visible scenes in the future, even though this is a penalty situation, is in the details: according to the protocol, the video assistant should only intervene when substitute players or team officials prevent a goal or attack an opponent. A ball stopped for the goalkeeper by a non-active player is therefore not part of it.
And so it will come in future in these special and scarce situations to no use of the VAR in Germany. "The written specification of IFAB is available, and we will implement it immediately," says Drees in an interview with sportschau.de. At the same time, the head of the German video assistants points out that the substitutes behind the goal line should hold back better in the future. "That is not a license, and if the referee on the field sees such an offense, it can still be a penalty." The risk of causing a penalty remains in these situations, if more obvious than in Kiel.

    1. Unbelievable news. If you go with "sense and spirit of the rule", everybody is aware that there are no real arguments. We have certain rules that have to be obeyed. VARs should continue to do it as these are clear and obvious penalties by the LOTG.

    Replies
    1. OFR and penalty, clear decision. However, live I was convinced that it was a dive

      Delete
    2. Zwayer took his time to watch the incident, to be honest he didn't look so much convinced. He had left the monitor, but he went again there to watch, typical behavior when a referee is in doubt.
I wonder: once VAR has assessed it as inside the box (on the line) and in front of such clear foul, what is the reason of a long review?

      Delete
    3. I think he didn‘t like that Kroos
took another step before going down. Did you see and yan you remember the neglected penalty by Zwayer in German cup final in added time a year a go? A very similar scene where the attacker was stamped on his foot but took a step before going down. Zwayer there did not give a penalty after OFR which caused huge controversy

      Delete
    4. Sometimes, Zwayer has got some exclusive opinions when he is called for an OFR. However, reading your words, it sounds as he took the correct decision. By the way, Stegemann is one of the very best VARs in Germany.

For me is correct Intervention by Stegemann and also penalty to Real Madrid.

    6. Btw I can imagine that Zwayer went back to the monitor after walking away (as Chefren mentioned) because he forgot to which player he has to show the YC... I cannot imagine that he was not sure and „showed“ that in this obvious way.

    7. I agree with Jonas, he went back to the monitor to check the number of the player that needed to be carded.

  25. Now correct Intervention by Turpin. Well done

    ReplyDelete
  26. In Milan, VAR Turpin changed a penalty whistled by Kulbakov in free kick (foul outside the box). Very difficult situation to read. For sure holding started outside, but in my opinion it ended at least on the line. I would have confirmed penalty but maybe I'm wrong.

    7. @Chefren, you’re right, as it was not a genuine attempt to play the ball, there’s no difference.
To me it’s anyway a RC, even if there are arguments for YC.

      Delete
    8. He didn't show the VAR sign when he changed his decision to free kick from penalty.

      Delete
  27. Missed RC for DOGSO by Kulbakov. Penalty was given, Turpin intervened as the holding ended before the penalty area. OFR should have taken place.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In my opinion YC is OK, you can't be sure that attacker would have reached ball. I don't perceive this situation as clear DOGSO.

      Delete
    2. The directive is still valid that if you're not 100% sure that the attacker would have reached the ball, you don't issue a red one. So I think you can back the call here. At least I'm not sure if Jesus would have reached the ball before the GK

      Delete
    3. Maybe we'll have the video. My first impression was 'clear DOGSO'.

  28. Watching a bit here and there the games but I would say a solid performance by our colleagues on the pitch this Wednesday so far. Let's hope they continue like that.

    ReplyDelete
  29. By the way very, very close onside before 1-0 for PSG. VAR confirmed the decision of the AR. Upper body of the attacker seemed rather offside, but we have to trust the VAR and the calibrated lines.

    1. Excellent decision in 46', it is rather attacker looking for penalty. Different situation in 41', if not offside, some arguments in favor of penalty, but for sure not a clear mistake. I agree with VAR in both situations.

    2. 41' Correct decision to play on. Correct YC. Do not like the 'stand up'-gesture though.
46' No penalty. Attacker looking for a contact.

      Delete
    4. Yes, I'm sorry. I referred to the initial decision. Lots of things going on. 9' additional time.

      Delete
    5. Maybe RC for violent conduct wouldn't have been wrong?
However, closer replay was not shown.

      Delete
    6. Here also a good argument to have more transparency about VAR in the stadium. Quite sure ppl still think Brych gave the penalty based on the initial incident

      Delete
    7. Yes, Chefren would have been possible. But assessing it as reckless is not wrong for me. Depends on the interpretation. Let me say that today was a crazy matchday.

      Delete
    8. Great work by German VARs tonight. For me penalty in Madrid and this one wer correct of course.
Also right procedure after the wrong call to review the punishable incident before.

      Delete
    9. Agree Brych and Team did a great job in a challenging game

      Delete
    10. Agreed. I think they did really well. Especially in Zagreb that's the result of much experience in the domestic divisions. Also without the impressions today, I would say that Stegemann and Dingert are the very best VARs in Germany. I don't remember a wrong intervention by both of them since a long time. Honestly speaking, I could not say that about Dankert.

    11. Video : https://streamable.com/dhbm0

      Delete
    12. Once again, I stick to my opinion ;-)
Clear penalty after OFR. YC is still supportable for me as the force was not excessive.

      Delete
    13. Sorry - but how is that YC supportable?

Even CLEAR violent conduct for an excessive force strike.

      Delete
    14. So, I'm sure some here will think I'm crazy, but...

Based on what I know about VAR procedures and how this went down, I think the following happened:

      1. Brych awards the penalty for the foul by #36 on the wing.

      2. The VAR notices the elbow against the attacking goalkeeper and tells Brych that there was a clear case of violent conduct off-the-ball.

      3. Brych undertakes the OFR, disagrees with the VAR, and decides it is a yellow card.

      That's it.

The penalty that Brych awarded here was not overturned. It was not "changed" to the other penalty. Now, we KNOW that if he did decide to overturn the penalty he called, the result would have still been a penalty. But we need to be very careful. The VAR did not recommend Brych review and overturn his initial penalty decision. Brych never did an OFR for the initial penalty decision.

    1. I stick to my opinion. Still supportable but really harsh RC.

    2. Suggested by FO? For me, very harsh.
We saw many worse foul punished by YC.
However, absolutely correct by VAR to support as there are maybe some arguments in favor of this decision.
Skomina had some troubles in this game, it was very difficult for him to manage the mass confrontation happened earlier.

    3. For me is very harsh RC and YC was better.

    4. Watching the full speed replay, I am honestly at a loss as to how you can call this RC wrong.

Look at the intensity of the tackle...

  45. As a Croat, I must agree that Brych was great today. My countrymans May be subjective and will say all the wrong things about him, but IMO it was great to watch him today.
Fully under control in a challenging match.

    1. Two pk situations in 1st half are maybe supportable, but if there was a stepping from behind in 41' then its a penalty, no "intensity" talks necessary. Also in context of those situations, I think its obvious that initial pk is really bad decision and not elite level IMO. However, looking at earlier incident and elbow, clear penalty for that incident so even possible RC for violent conduct.

    2. initial pk in 95', of course

  46. Very good performance by Brych in a challenging match. Good VAR as well.

  47. My dear friends, I was live at the stadium in Zagreb, but I had my eye on my mobile phone for replays. It was obvious that initialy penalty was not whistled for the foul on the goalkeeper. But after OFR it was obvious that it was a clear penalty. But all in all, great match for Brych in Zagreb tonight.

    1. You heard what Bjelica said about VAR ?

      Delete
    2. Yes, I believe UEFA also heard it, I would not be surprised if they punish him for his statements. Shortly, he said on national television that VAR is bullshit, although if I understood right, he admited that Brych's final decission on that penalty was correct.

    3. Can you write here his words?

    4. Bjelica in Polish league past every matches told a lot of about Var. Var is bad, scandalosa etc. :) he told, that he od going working to country, only where not Var :):)

    5. Bjelica first of all has a grudge that var in similar situations in match once reacts and once not. This is interpretation. He think that in every match is a lot of this situations.

  49. Brazil - Chile (Andris Treikanis).
Based on only these highlights: https://youtu.be/oUx4QVBcBnk

7' DFK awarded to BRA just before penalty area for handball. The handball itslef is supportable, but for me it looked like the contact was inside thepenalty area (but no very good replays shown for that). VAR didn't intervene, probably because there were no conclusive evidence; maybe I am wrong and it indeed was outside. Brazil scored, and I think that was good for Treimanis.
45+2' Clear penalty awarded, missed clear YC for SPA to CHI GK.
14' Chile goal disallowed due to very, very tight offside after VAR-only review (initial decision - goal).

    1. No, Treimanis, as you can see lower. Just a spelling mistake. :)

    2. 45+2' was ball-oriented, therefore no YC for SPA in the penalty area.

  50. Some of the people that knew me and my husband before, and those of you who have been at my home you know very well that I had everything a lady wishes for in life. Life was so good but it is hard to explain how things changed for the worse so quickly. I first heard rumors that my man is seeing another woman. In a short time, I found out that it was true. When I confronted him, he instead chose the other woman over me and in fact, he later moved out and left the kids with me to suffer. I must admit life became so hard that I visited priests & healers for help. My life was in a mess that I couldn't concentrate at work. Soon I lost my job and in no time I became so broke. I had no source of income and he refused to support me, not even taking my calls. My friend so what I was going through and she took me to Dr.Mama Nana +27672073600 who had also helped her in a similar situation. She is specialized in solving marriage and relationship issues, cleansing from bad luck, women who cannot get pregnant and many others, but as for me, I didn't care about anything else she does. All I wanted was only to bring back my fiance and my happiness. That’s what mattered to me at that particular time. So I decided to give it a try. But hey this lady is amazing. She performed special prayers for me and cleansed me from bad luck. Friends am telling you the truth, in the second week after the prayers, my fiance came back home asking for forgiveness. Oh GOD, I could not believe it. He asked for forgiveness and he said that he wanted to come back home and I thought it was a joke. Our wedding was last year in May. Now, I am married, happy and so excited. I thank you, my friends, for standing with me in my hardships and during my wedding preparations. God bless you all. Many people are asking me for Mama Nana’s number. I am giving it out here in case you are having any problems in your life or marriage or if your man is cheating or if he left you. Give it a try. Here is her contact: Dr.Mama Nana +27672073600. You can even Whatsapp her.
