No Bastien in MD 3 and 4. So I guess the second YC in FK Crvena zvezda - Olympiakós FC was considered as wrong. Not a good sign for the next euro for him at least as main referee.

1) Is the appointment to the RLMGAL game seen as a 'reward' for recent performances? Is it seen as a standard appointment? Or even a 'punishment' for recent performances?
2) Is Batta there because the game is seen as a test for Zwayer, in either perceived good or bad shape?
Or to 'monitor' his general progress in a 'normal' game?
3) Is Zwayer's EURO participation in doubt?
Or is this a signal that the German is 'reconsidered' for sth bigger?
I would be interested in other users' thoughts.
IMO this is a standard appointment. After Real's win in the first leg, the importance is not that high anymore. And e.g. Brych's game is less sonorous, but probably more crucial for the group outcome. The other two possible matches could rather have been seen as a "reward" (CHEAJA) or "punishment" (ATAMCI).

So, at the same date, at home, Red Star will play again against English team who was also runner-up (as Liverpool a year before), and we will have again referee from Spain. Everything is the same, and I hope the result will be the same (2-0 for home side :)))).
About appointment in Belgrade, I think it is interesting to underline that we will have a very trusted Elite referee, while 2 weeks ago in London for the same game we had a Category 1 at his debut.
ReplyDeleteA matchday after and more clear standings are for sure main reason, but mostly I think that this choice is based on the fact that Serbian side is by far more and more good team at home than away games. Indeed we know the amazing atmosphere in Belgrade. Differently, in London game was very easy for referee and there weren't troubles. As committee was able to "read the game" and give a suitable appointment 15 days ago, again, it was very wise to appoint an Elite referee in this case.
For me Cakir, Kuipers, Skomina, big names, big refs. I like Kuipers and Cakir. And big compliment for Rosetti, Dallas. They gave young refs chances. I like also the VAR project, Roberto is the best in this, and good that we have more VAR experts now. So it's nothing special anymore. Next season all games VAR. Good message from UEFA

DeleteMax Iva - This is a misconception that is rife in the media. The reason England didn't have anyone at the World Cup is because Mark Clattenburg left and he was England's nominee. It simply wouldn't have been fair to all the other referees around the world to replace him last minute with someone who hadn't gone through the world cup selection process.

The second division match between Holstein Kiel and VfL Bochum experienced one of the oddest penalties ever, because an unused substitute caused it. Now, the IFAB says: The procedure should be different in the future.
ReplyDeleteIn the game between Kiel and Bochum there was a penalty, although Bochum's Silvere Ganvoula clearly missed the goal in the 37th minute - because the Kiel substitute Michael Eberwein kicked the ball to his goalkeeper Ioannis Gelios to allow him to quickly perform the goal kick. The big problem: The ball had not completely left the field.
The video assistant told referee Timo Gerach that Eberwein had intervened in the game. In accordance with the rules Gerach decided on penalty. The intervention of the VAR initially seemed correct, it was about a penalty situation, and these may be checked by the VAR. Ganvoula strode to the point and scored the 1-1 for Bochum. But then questions came up among the referees and video assistants. Jochen Drees, Project Manager VAR at DFB, therefore asked for an assessment of IFAB.
And now they say that they no longer want to see such interventions by the video assistant. "According to the rules everything was right," says IFAB CEO Lukas Brud in an interview with sportschau.de. "But the intervention of the VAR should not necessarily have happened, because that contradicts the sense and spirit of the rule."
Brud talks about a paragraph in Rule 7, according to which the referee must interrupt the game, for example, if a team official or a substitute player intervenes in the game. The game should then be continued with a direct free kick or in the penalty area with a penalty kick, as happened in Kiel. The DFB has actually acted correctly in the situation - but it was wrong.
"The substitute from Kiel instinctively stopped the ball to make the game fast, and certainly not to change the game situation to the detriment of Bochum," says Brud. There was a gap in the rules in earlier times, which allowed intervention from the outside as a team official or a substitute - punished pretty mildly by a referee ball or an indirect free kick. Only for intentional external interference that changes the game, the rule was introduced in 2016. In the situation in Kiel, therefore, a warning would have been better, said Brud.
The basis for excluding VARs in such tight but visible scenes in the future, even though this is a penalty situation, is in the details: according to the protocol, the video assistant should only intervene when substitute players or team officials prevent a goal or attack an opponent. A ball stopped for the goalkeeper by a non-active player is therefore not part of it.
And so it will come in future in these special and scarce situations to no use of the VAR in Germany. "The written specification of IFAB is available, and we will implement it immediately," says Drees in an interview with sportschau.de. At the same time, the head of the German video assistants points out that the substitutes behind the goal line should hold back better in the future. "That is not a license, and if the referee on the field sees such an offense, it can still be a penalty." The risk of causing a penalty remains in these situations, if more obvious than in Kiel.

Unbelievable news. If you go with "sense and spirit of the rule", everybody is aware that there are no real arguments. We have certain rules that have to be obeyed. VARs should continue to do it as these are clear and obvious penalties by the LOTG.

Sometimes, Zwayer has got some exclusive opinions when he is called for an OFR. However, reading your words, it sounds as he took the correct decision. By the way, Stegemann is one of the very best VARs in Germany.

ReplyDeleteIn Milan, VAR Turpin changed a penalty whistled by Kulbakov in free kick (foul outside the box). Very difficult situation to read. For sure holding started outside, but in my opinion it ended at least on the line. I would have confirmed penalty but maybe I'm wrong.

DeleteBased on what I know about VAR procedures and how this went down, I think the following happened:
1. Brych awards the penalty for the foul by #36 on the wing.
2. The VAR notices the elbow against the attacking goalkeeper and tells Brych that there was a clear case of violent conduct off-the-ball.
3. Brych undertakes the OFR, disagrees with the VAR, and decides it is a yellow card.
That's it.
The penalty that Brych awarded here was not overturned. It was not "changed" to the other penalty. Now, we KNOW that if he did decide to overturn the penalty he called, the result would have still been a penalty. But we need to be very careful. The VAR did not recommend Brych review and overturn his initial penalty decision. Brych never did an OFR for the initial penalty decision.

However, absolutely correct by VAR to support as there are maybe some arguments in favor of this decision.
Skomina had some troubles in this game, it was very difficult for him to manage the mass confrontation happened earlier.

As a Croat, I must agree that Brych was great today.My countrymans May be subjective and will say all the wrong things about him, but IMO it was great to watch him today.

Two pk situations in 1st half are maybe supportable, but if there was a stepping from behind in 41' then its a penalty, no "intensity" talks necessary. Also in context of those situations, I think its obvious that initial pk is really bad decision and not elite level IMO. However, looking at earlier incident and elbow, clear penalty for that incident so even possible RC for violent conduct.

ReplyDeleteMy dear friends, I was live at the stadium in Zagreb, but I had my eye on my mobile phone for replays. It was obvious that initialy penalty was not whistled for the foul on the goalkeeper. But after OFR it was obvious that it was a clear penalty. But all in all, great match for Brych in Zagreb tonight.

DeleteYes, I believe UEFA also heard it, I would not be surprised if they punish him for his statements. Shortly, he said on national television that VAR is bullshit, although if I understood right, he admited that Brych's final decission on that penalty was correct.

7' DFK awarded to BRA just before penalty area for handball. The handball itslef is supportable, but for me it looked like the contact was inside thepenalty area (but no very good replays shown for that). VAR didn't intervene, probably because there were no conclusive evidence; maybe I am wrong and it indeed was outside. Brazil scored, and I think that was good for Treimanis.
45+2' Clear penalty awarded, missed clear YC for SPA to CHI GK.
14' Chile goal disallowed due to very, very tight offside after VAR-only review (initial decision - goal).
