Thanks Chefren. I am very interested in the name of the referee where so many writers are talking about in the previous post. Just to clarify, who is suspected of this bad behaviour?
ReplyDeleteThis pretty much indicates Zwayer has no game as referee in the first week (Stegemann would be his VAR).
ReplyDeleteCL and EL only restart one week later.
DeleteCD Mirandés – Villarreal CF,
ReplyDeleteRicardo de Burgos Bengoetxea (Alfonso Javier Álvarez Izquierdo)
45’ Penalty (handling) to Mirandés
54’ Penalty (handling) to Villarreal
78’ Penalty (tripping) to Villarreal? [REPLAY]
82’ Careless, Reckless or Serious Foul Play? No foul given
VAR Interventions: 45' No foul -> Penalty (OFR).
Overall: generous line in foul detection, a few fouls were missed; one (smartly) ignored YC, besides faultless disciplinary; hard to describe his personality / presence – successful here; excellent fitness, movements into diagonal channel gave him problems in some scenes –> 8,4 level.

ReplyDeleteOT - COUPE DE FRANCE - QUARTERFINALS

Belfort - Rennes, 20:55 CET, referee: Amaury Delerue [UEFA 2nd] (VAR: Willy Delajod [UEFA 2nd])
Wednesday (12.02)
Dijon - Paris, 18:30 CET, referee: Benoît Bastien [UEFA Elite] (VAR: Johan Hamel)

Thursday (13.02)
Épinal - Saint-Étienne, 21:00 CET, referee: François Letexier [UEFA 1st] (VAR: Stéphanie Frappart [UEFA Women Elite])
Really great times for Benoît Millot at the moment. After a convincing performance in the quite challening Rennes-Nantes derby (including an excellent delayed penalty decision) two weeks ago, he now takes charge of the "Olympico" in the quarterfinals. In case PSG should not qualify for the final, Millot should be appointed and rewarded for his really good season. I insist: a shame that he wasn't appointed to EL Group Stage this season after his debut last year.

Christian Dingert (GER, 2nd cat.) is refereeing North East United - Jamshedpur FC in Indian Super League tomorrow with (unknown) Indian assistants.
ReplyDeleteHe is the third foreign referee in India this season after Turki Al Khudair (KSA) and Sherzod Kasimov (UZB) and the first UEFA referee ever in this league (if my source is correct).
Thanks for reporting that. Do you know if he will officiate more than one game there?
DeleteOther interesting appointments in the last days: Mads-Kristoffer Kristoffersen handled Al Kuwait - Al Qadisia; Greece returned the exchange with Switzerland - Athanásios Tzílos took charge of FC Zürich - Basel yesterday.
No, I don't know yet, but will update here if I see information.
DeleteFC Goa - Mumbai City on Wednesday is his second (and probably last) match in India.
DeleteThe news that "according to UEFA Rocchi has made mistakes in Ajax - Chelsea" has reached Italy. It has been reported that in Palma de Maiorca these incidents have been discussed by committee. Source is reported to be Dutch Telegraph. Who has informed the journal? To be honest, I think that these infos shouldn't be public.
ReplyDeleteI think these infos should definitely be public, but not in this way. Why won't the referee be interviewed after a game (if something controversial happened)? Why won't the UEFA publish a statement? This would also help refereeing overall (also in regards to respect for referees). UEFA should take example of The Netherlands in regards to transparency concerning this.
DeleteAl Kuwait - Al Qadisia
ReplyDeleteMads-Kristoffer Kristoffersen (Abdallah Jimali)
32’ Yellow Card QAD no.33 (tackle); Violent Conduct against the referee? No sanction
57’ Second Yellow Card QAD no.33 (striking); Violent Conduct(s) against the referee? No sanction; Yellow Cards (UB) to KUW no.20 & QAD no.35
69’ Goal for Al Qadisia disallowed for foul (tripping) in the ‘build-up’
78’ Penalty (striking) to Al Qadisia?
+97’ Penalty (holding) to Al Qadisia? YC (simulation) given
VAR Interventions:
67’ Goal -> Defensive Freekick [OFR];
78’ No penalty, play on -> confirmed [OFR];
+97’ Penalty -> Indirect Freekick + Yellow Card (Simulation) [OFR]
Overall: simply disgusting behaviour of the Al Qadisia players… association MUST give long ban(s); besides one bad missed YC, very (very) good decision taking; simply amazing mental strength; adequate / slightly lacking fitness, not dynamic movement; how possible was it to correctly punish the actions of Al Qadisia players?; could referee have done anything differently managing the players? -> ultimately, de facto impossible game to referee.
32' should be (at least) a 2nd YC for grabbing the referee's arm. Would have probably resulted in the same shenanigans as 57' though...
Delete78' and 97' are both not clear enough for a VAR intervention for me. Especially in 97' I don't think it's a dive - Just eithe a soft penalty or play on.
Has anyone watched greek derby AEK-Panathinaikos? If yes, do you have some impressions to share?
ReplyDeleteI will watch it in the next days.
DeleteA couple of clips from REAL BETIS vs. FC BARCELONA, officiated by UEFA category 1 referee José María Sánchez Martínez (VAR: Carlos Del Cerro Grande)
ReplyDelete3' - missing foul and YC for SPA
=> https://streamable.com/v0lgx
5' - Penalty for Betis awarded after OFR + YC to Lenglet: is this SPA or DOGSO? (my personal feeling would be DOGSO)
=> https://streamable.com/qugk2
36' - Reckless or SFP? (YC given, VAR supported the decision)
=> https://streamable.com/g2hkj
39' - missing 2YC for Roberto?
=> https://streamable.com/5pdlh
71' - penalty appeal BAR: VAR supported play-on
=> https://streamable.com/oxg04
77' - First YC to Fekir for reckless foul, immediately followed by 2YC for dissent: management
=> https://streamable.com/d7hxo
79' - 2YC for Lenglet (SPA)
=> https://streamable.com/gpwxm
Without having seen the total match and based on these incidents, it looked like a very challenging match for Sánchez Martínez and based from these clips, it didn't look like a very convincing one. Did anyone see the entire match on here? I'd like to know a bit more.
Furthermore: how would you assess the handball penalty situation? IMO, if you look at the last replay, there is a real argument to say that this is DOGSO and RC: Lenglet is the only defender left between attacker and keeper, the arm blocks a shot that is targeted to the goal. It could (should?) have been a RC.
3' Yes It's a missed foul and yellow.
Delete5' Doesn't even look like that ball would go in, so a card doesn't even look like it's needed. For sure you can't say that would 100% go in so best case is a yellow card.
36' That's nothing more than reckless.
39' Extremely clear yellow card offense. Almost SFP.
71' Clear foul. Difficult from those angles to tell if it was inside. If inside, clear penalty.
77' Good. THose dissents are not good for this sport. But the ref doesn't need to attack him and provoce the second dissent. Either give the card for the first dissent or let it be. He provoced the second one.
79' Correct yellow card, no problem.
3´ Goalkeeper had certain possibility to prevent goal scoring so YC is still at least acceptable (if not fully correct). Only if in such situation was another defender on the line (not goalkeeper) then it would have been DOGSO.
Delete5 - Never a red card. Correct decision, PK and YC
Delete39 - 2nd YC clearly missed
71 - for me this not enough for a penalty
+ a clear penalty missed which was not even reviewed by VAR (min 90+3 I think).
https://twitter.com/MessiFcLM/status/1226627429533392896
A Scottish referee to England, interesting.
ReplyDeleteWhy? Normal thing in this competition. Maybe not in this phase but still. What is more interesting is belgian observer in the match Rennes - Brugge. IMO avoidable but maybe demonstration that UEFA can't see even in such nomination single problem.
DeleteWell, to answer with your own reaction, in this competition it’s also common business to appoint a referee observer from the same )or a neighboring) country as the home team.
DeleteAtrómitos - Olympiakós Pireás
ReplyDeleteUrs Schnyder (Stéfanos Koumparákis)
37' Penalty (tripping) to Olympiakós?
73' Second Yellow Card (SPA) OLY no.14
Overall: some fouls missed; very good disciplinary control; aroused respect -> good performance in a game without bigger challenges.
AEK Athína - Panathinaïkós
ReplyDeleteFran Jović (Praxitélis Zachariádis)
87' Reckless vs. Serious Foul Play? Yellow Card given
+91' Penalty (pushing/charging) to AEK?
VAR Interventions:
Overall: well-waited to open the cards at +45' (tackle), very good disciplinary control; chaotic presentation, not the most elegant optic; prevention even while the ball was in play in player-player confrontations; very tiring way of refereeing, never lost concentration / the overview: impressive -> good performance, I would give him an EL début.

ReplyDeleteMichael Fabbri (UEFA, 2nd) will take charge of the Panathinaikos - PAOK clash in the Greek Cup (QF stage). His Assistants will be Alessandro Costanzo and Matteo Passeri. VAR will be Marco Di Bello.
Thanks for this info. Not the best moment for Fabbri in serie A. I assume he has been assigned to this game also to recover a bit of form.
DeleteI think that this appointment is not wise. Panathinaikos asked for an Elite referee after what happened at the 1st leg.
DeleteI'll report Schärer's game tomorrow (and Fabbri's too, in due course).
DeleteCase discussion:
ReplyDeleteAt 2nd category in Germany, referee awards a penalty kick for handball via VAR. Penalty is saved and a defender who has enroached backpasses the ball to goalkeeper who catches it. Referee awards an indirect kick. So my question is: Should the referee award a retake to the penalty kick because of the enroachment happening before the backpass? Is the Indirect FK the more serious violation between the backpass and the enroachment?
Here is the link to the incident:
https://streamable.com/46ayu
Technically speaking, yes, the penalty should have been retaken due to the encroachment by the defender (it was actually quite clear).
DeleteHowever, I'm having trouble to see this as an actual, deliberate backpass. You can clearly see in the replay that once the defender realizes that goalkeeper wants to take the ball with his hand, the defender stops. Yes, he touches the ball, but at the crucial moment he does not make a clear, controlled action towards the ball. I wouldn't speak of a violation of LotG here, Arne Aarnink has assessed it based on his perception and interpretation. Violation of LotG would have been if he gave an IDFK for the encroachment.
PAOK Thessaloníki – Panathinaïkós
ReplyDeleteSandro Schärer (Fedayi San)
33’ Penalty (tripping) to PAOK + Yellow Card (DOGSO); Second Yellow Card (dissent)?
43’ Second Yellow Card (SPA) PAN no.44? No sanction; Yellow Card (dissent – mobbing) PAOK no.23
VAR Interventions:
Overall: mature impression; very good, excellent and prepared impression for this game, until ≈65’ where he lost concentration/the overview a bit, especially tolerating a couple of unsporting behaviours, missed some moments to step in – but still no bigger problems; theoretically five yellow cards missed (reckless – clear but not that tactically valuable at 3’ especially after a delayed whistle; reckless – AR1/4th could have helped, easy to miss; reckless – 64' understandable, if a bit disappointing, perception mistake; reckless – hard to spot; SPA/LoR – 82’ bad concentration, tactically valuable card) 64' and 82' were the (more) significant mistakes; distant authority yet easily able to communicate with players on both an authoritative and empathic level – impressive, a huge asset for him -> good performance, showed skills on a UEFA Elite level, to improve keep full concentration throughout(!).
Again thank you for your work dear Mikael! Love to watch all these highlights clips and I‘m sure that they take a lot of time to find and make.

It has often been the case that when Turpin is appointed as VAR in Ligue 1, he generally has a Champions League appointment the following week. If appointed, I guess we will see him on Wednesday either in ATA-VAL or TOT-RBL. Tuesday seems unlikely with DOR-PSG and ATL-LIV (I mean, he would be able to officiate that game, but is UEFA ready to appoint him again after the Vrsaljko-Simeone incidents?).
He had Valencia on MD6, so it should be TOT-RBL, if anything. But I would prefer him in a bigger match.
DeleteUEFA is fully ready to appoint Turpin everywhere. Rosetti considers hm candidate for CL final.
DeleteI actually should consult Ligue 2 appointments as well before starting to babble my thoughts. :D
DeleteWednesday in CL seems unlikely as well, because Turpin is appointed in Ligue 2 on the following Friday (21.02), in Clermont - Paris FC, with his regular ARs. If appointed in CL next week, the only option would be then Atlético-Liverpool.
Roberto Rosetti observing Club Atlético de Madrid - Liverpool FC.
DeleteClermont Turpin?
Delete@Anonymous do you have observers for all games? Thank you in advance.
DeleteMy guess is Makellie with Rosetti.
Delete@Referee 12 Makkelie had Liverpool on MD6 so I think it is unlikely.
DeleteI would have predicted Kuipers for ATL-LIV, but with Rosetti observing, it probably is one of the final candidates instead. Then Hategan, Marciniak and Turpin would be the options, who did not have those teams in group stage.
DeleteI don't think so that Turpin with be at Madrid with Rosetti. They were together at Barcelona -Borussia. Turpin in Real -Manchester City for me.
DeleteRefereeing
ReplyDeleteUEFA and CONMEBOL agreed to implement a referee exchange programme under which match officials from both organisations will be appointed to oversee international matches on each other's continent with a view to providing further experience for referees. This exchange programme could possibly see a team of UEFA match officials appointed for the group stage of the Copa América and a team of CONMEBOL match officials appointed for the group stage of UEFA EURO 2020. In addition, there will also be similar exchanges between the UEFA Champions League/Copa Libertadores and the UEFA Europa League/Copa Sudamericana.
CONMEBOL referees too por to officiate in UEFA.
DeleteSounds very interesting and something I always hoped for. I always wanted to see Pitana referee a European match. Hopefully it will happen.

ReplyDeletePierluigi Collina is 60 today. Congratulations to him. He surely belongs to the group of many excellent referees but I don't dare to write that he is the best because it is difficult to compare past and present. What is truth, that concept referee is for many people (also form outside of sport and football) connected with Collina.
