ReplyDeleteThough I think that if it wasn't for an unfortunate injury that kept him out during almost 2 months in October-November 2020, this debut would have happened already last season.
Interesting to note the 2 Germans in RMA-INT-SHK-SHR group... the Elite (Aytekin) gets the (on paper) weakest game while Siebert got the 'important' one.
Clear pattern in these MD1 appointments. Biggest names (Makkelie, Lahoz, Taylor) appointed not for the biggest clashes but for some important and close games in the more 'open' groups. Instead the coming men like Siebert, Gözübüyük and some referees who have the potential to be among those top5, top8 referees for a long time (Marciniak, Oliver) get the biggest clashes. I like this way of appointing, especially in this stage of the tournament. It shows (for the first time?) some sign of strategic management of appointments by Rosetti. Let's see if it stays that way for the next matchdays.

ReplyDeleteThe big match of his day goes to Siebert, who has clearly already "replaced" Brych, waiting for the promotion to Elite on December. At the same time, I must underline that there is a trend (let's wait for MD2, but so far, I have this feeling) that we wont see too much Brych until December, maybe only in occasion of Nations League final?
It can be a mutual agreement, given that he has already announced the international retirement. He wasn't appointed in WC qualiifers, only CL play off.
Then, to follow, Marciniak. One could say another big match, yes, especially looking at the past, but now in my opinion it is a step less sonorous than Inter - Real Madrid, because Milan is back in European competition after a long time. Nevertheless, excellent appointment for the Polish, I welcome it. Hopefully he will have a very good game. Gözübüyük under the eyes of Dallas will be a big test for a possible promotion.
Schaerer, Hațegan and Aytekin with normal appointments for them.
About the German, we can underline that, like it was for Kulbakov on Tuesday, maybe committee now tries to understand more about who really deserve to keep the Elite status... or maybe who can be still reliable for something more. We will see.

Each single appointment is really fascinating this time! It makes me a bit sad we are not in the TTT era anymore - it is simply impossible for us to keep across all eight matches, which I would do if I had the time!
ReplyDeleteSpecifically, I want to talk about how UEFA are dealing with Daniel Siebert. To be honest, while I am so pleased that an excellent referee gets a top assignment, it actually begins to become quite irritating.
For politics, UEFA didn't promote him after the EURO. Sorry, but that is a total joke. While we can all laugh at the arbitrary categorisation, there is a very serious point to be made. I don't know if the figures posted by TTT are still correct, but it is true that UEFA still pay referees by category. So Siebert will lose sth like €8 000 for politics.
Secondly, I think his appointments actually become a bit absurd now. He is being treated like UEFA's number one referee (which, on form, I'd argue is even fair!); remember, Inter vs. Real will be his fifth ever appearance in CL GS.
I understand the necessity for DFB to have their top referee after Brych, but I really think UEFA should approach this in a more clever way.
Daniel Siebert is NOT Szymon Marciniak rising through the ranks, the Pole with an extraordinary ability to connect with players. By the very nature of his (just brilliant, by the way) incidents-focused style, the German referee doesn't make many extraneous friends in his games.
While I watched all these games and can only say that I saw masterclass-level performances, after WALDEN, St Johnstone vs. LASK, POLENG, I feel like a storm is coming around Siebert from people who don't really understand refereeing, and don't like his performances.
So Inter vs. Real, with lots of problematic players, is a very big ask for Daniel Siebert at this stage in his career. So was POLENG, but in my view, he was again very good - but it seems most people disagree, because he got some throw-ins wrong, and isn't Felix Brych on a presence level.
The crows really circle around referees with his style (the other example in last twenty years is actually Moreno, equally excellent and sunk by his correct following of the guidelines), even in refereeing. Just look at the comments on here, Bigsoccer, RtR about POLENG - the sole praise for Siebert was apparently mine.
I really hope that Wednesday goes well for Siebert, but if he (correctly, even) ejects three players or sth, then in my view, UEFA have messed up a bit. Whatever happens, I would urge them to have a recalibration of how they treat Daniel Siebert - it would be a real tragedy for refereeing if by carelessness, they seriously damaged a referee of his class.

DeleteThanks again for a very interesting comment. I couldnt agree more, sometimes it seems that some referees can make unpopular decision, while others, perceived young, inexperienced, distant etc. are faced with serious critics.
However, Siebert's appointment is in line with other appointments for MD1, and I believe he knows very well who will be there on the pitch so he will be prepared. And by the way, a part of responsibility is of Italian referees I think, I watched Orsato in Samp-Int this weekend, it is remarkable how he ignored so much dissent and molesting by the players. OK, he has the authority and he feels great on the pitch, but what about others who dont have 20 years of experience?!
In all this, I really don’t understand why they then promoted Tobias Steiler and after Atlanta vs Madrid and the Red card he issued, everything changed for him and Siebert was now pushed ahead of him!!! Not to even mention Felix Zwayer.

DeleteI’m surprised at Sanchez Martinez’s appointment. As someone mentioned, the top elite referees have been assigned to games in tight groups that could prove to be crucial games for qualification. Sporting - Ajax is another such game, but there we have a debut. Why? Did UEFA forget about the clashes between Ajax and Benfica, where they assigned Buquet (first category) to the first game who made such an awful impression that they had to assign Rocchi (top elite) to the second game between them? While his debut is fully deserved, I don’t think this is the right game for him. Hopefully he will prove me wrong though!

I'd be lying if I said I am surprised by Siebert's appointment. I think the trust Rosetti and committee have in him is incredibly high and while I agree (his recent performances on UEFA level were great!), I think these big appointments are all coming way too fast. On paper, he's still only First Group but he seems to be treated like an experienced Elite referee already. Why not give him some "smaller" matches and let him settle in? We all know how Rosetti treats Italian teams and if Siebert makes one decision that is not liked in Italy, we probably won't see him in matches involving Italian teams anytime soon again. Committee seems to be looking really hard for a successor to Brych… I mean look how they promoted Stieler, appointed him to top clashes and then “dropped” him after a few sub-par performances.
Anyway, best of luck to Siebert and I hope we’ll see another excellent performance from him!

ReplyDeleteImportant tests for Gozubuyuk and Siebert. Both are in the running for promotion this summer, Siebert should be a sure name. I see a lot of similarities with the treatment of Stieler last year; I hope Rosetti will be more forgiving when Siebert makes mistakes. But based on recent performances, deserved appointment.
Debut of Sanchez Martinez with a crucial match in that group, I fully agree with the post of jleekens. With Gozubuyuk, Frankowski, Siebert and Sanchez Martinez all getting big games, I think we will see the same with Ekberg, Guida/Massa and Kabakov in MD2.
One more note about the VAR appointments. Fritz with two appointments as VAR in two days, this should be prevented. Also I don't like the appointments of the AVAR Attwell and Frappart. Why not use an Italian AR (like Sinn) and Blom, now you have unnecessary language problems.
It looks like Szymon is regaining the committee's trust, a very good game for him, good luck

ReplyDeleteReferees like Siebert and Gözübüyük need to prove themselves before a promotion to the Elite. The Elite category has already faced 3 departures so Rosetti needs to bring fresh blood. If you add the referees who are under-performing (Collum, Sidiropoulos, Kulbakou, Aytekin) there aren't many options for the big matches.
Also the appointments of Sanchez Martinez, Frankowski and Schärer it's an encouraging sign towards that direction.
Fully agree @greek ref. I would add Kruzliak in the list of low performers and I woudl add taht Mateu, Orsato; Cakir and Del Cerro are close to retirement. Do you when ?
DeleteWell basically all four names should attend Qatar 2022 in my opinion, del Cerro is sure because preselected, Mateu is my wish because he is by far better than the countryman from Madrid, and it would be a pity to see him out. Orsato, well, I had some doubts about the continuation of his career after EURO, but now it seems that indeed he is on good path again, the fact that he has officaited Inter says something as well, because it means that basically he will stay a certain time.

How many of these would be selected now? 3 maybe 4 and 2-3 from the VAR list. In 2018 UEFA had 10 spots. With all respect, I can`t believe FIFA seriously thought about Kulbakov, Kabakov, Jovanović and Kružliak.
Back then Chefren wrote that except Marciniak, Turpin and Mateu Lahoz the rest of the Elite refereees at that moment should be out. Including Karasev, Hategan, Orsato, Taylor and Cakir. I think we will see some of the names above at WC. Sure, a lot of things changed since then and a lot the majority of referees continue after 45 yo. Also, it is interesting that it was expected a "duel" between Gil Manzano and Mateu Lahoz, I think there is no question about this now.
On the other hand FIFA had the right feeling to choose Siebert as their German candidate above Zwayer and Stieler - which was surprising back then.

And it would have been an easy (and logical) choice to swap him with Makkelie.

ReplyDeleteIn Bruges, important decision for Schaerer, he gave YC for SPA after a defensive mistake. I think correct or at least supportable decision, there was another defender and the attacker was not alone, however I think RC wouldn't have been changed by VAR.

Minute 20' team Gozubuyuk missed a deflection by arm in penalty area and corner kick. Never a punishable handball, so no penalty and VAR silent, but still a missed detection.

This must be a red card after all: the PSG player hits the Club Brugge player who was on his way to the goal (promising attack).

Yes, I think Hategan saw an illegal acitve movement towards the GK or a different amount of played ball, so he whistled a foul.
DeleteVAR confirmed that no foul can be detected but a handball is there that is clearly punishable before goal.
They didn't communicate this properly, watchers had to GUESS the reason for disallowing the goal. Hategan should have made the VAR gesture and in addition the handball gesture instead of simply indicating a FK. This needs improvement.
i am not convinced at all by the performance of sanchez martinez. Inconsistent and he showed YC's too quickly, almost losing control in a very easy match. Ans above all, he shouts a lot to players and pushed a player away just before giving a YC. Not nice to see and definetely not helping in keeping things calm on the pitch.

DeleteDidn't watch the match besides the goals but I saw that he whistled +35 fouls, so I guess that he adopted a very strict line (which is already fairly strict in domestic competition) because of being his debut.
Delete@Hans I don't think that it will happen and I'm fine with it. Sometimes his authoritative style has condemned him to lose the match when he gets over-excited (e.g. Betis-Barcelona 2020, just before the pandemic) but it's also the style that helped him to reach the top in Spain and his CL debut tonight. Not every referee has to handle the matches with the same style, diversity is good ;)

DeleteI do not agree that showing YC too quickly is a bad sign. I love the determination by referees who shows YC or RC quickly because they are confident with their decisions. As Quilava mentioned, it is good to see referees who shows different styles. This is the beauty of refereeing.

ReplyDeleteReally good for Marciniak, this game was surely challenging, with a crucial decision and big pressure. Excellent work by assistant referees, I just hope he can continue on this path.
DeleteSerdar Gözübüyük showed good advantages, correct penalty because clear handball for Manchester City after QFR and correct second YC for Leipzig.

What was unpolite? How can you be satisfied at this level when you miss a clear handball. Which could have been prevented if you followed the game correctly. In addition, you easily see that Gozubuyuk often hesitates and waits for input. I miss a real leader on the field who makes the decisions himself I Are there new rules here? This is a pattern for Guzubuyuk. Can that be written down? It would be nice if we could discuss that.
DeleteIt is absurd to claim, the way you did, that any FIFA referee from the cat 1 is terrible and not talented at all and that every time he makes decisions (not being made by his AR) there is a problem. This is an aggressive general remark on personal level, and cant be interpreted in a constructive way.
DeleteI agree with you in a way, I dont like Gozubuyuk too much. Also I dont like Scharer, unlike some people on this blog. But obviously they have some value, no matter our personal sympathies.
DeleteVery good performance by Daniel Siebert in Internazionale Milano - Real Madrid. The teams wanted to play football, so Siebert let the game flow. He correctly issued 2 YCs. He had absolutely no problems. I think that's why we don't have other comments about him here.

Interestingly enough, in Portugese media I dont see any referene to RC situations, they mostly discuss if the goal should stand or not, and even claim that the referee was influenced by the crowd.
Although disallowing the goal and issuing a DOGSO RC were correct decisions IMO, Hategan missed two further RCs for SFP.
DeleteThe 17' scene is VERY clear for me, the incident in 21' is a bit more controversial but still a sending-off.
Re. VAR, Di Bello might be in serious trouble. Not so much regarding 21', this scene is not clear-cut, but regarding 17' - intervention would be necassary.
A really good/expected level performance by Schärer on Brugge-PSG. The match was of normal difficulty but he handled it well. He managed it mostly with small talk and intervened only when needed. 4 YC were shown in total and all were correct.
ReplyDeleteHe was hit by the ball once and resumed the match with a drop ball correctly. IMO he should have cautioned Neymar at 82' for a reckless challenge. Instead he had a small talk with both players.
Both AR's with correct offside calls.
After watching the 1st matchday I would like to mention how important natural authority, communucation and body language are now, esp. with VARs working in the background. Hategan and Kulbakov are examples showing how an elite-referee should NOT act - passive, without constant communication and any natural authority their style is nothing else than an INVITATION to confrontations and testing how far the players can go and even truds to manipulate the ref...
ReplyDeleteOn the other side we have new young big talents promising a great future, who let the match flow, but alwayd are LEADERS communicating clearly with a natural authority. I was again very happy about Siebert and very impressed by Letexier in that point.
The discussion about possible candidates for the finals comes much to early. Lets first see many more matches before judging. But the first matchday was all in all a goodone, the new and younger refs were performing on average or good level, and I would appreciate Rosetti and the commission to make a clear cut... About the Germans: Siebert is clearly the number one now, Stieler and Aytekin (convincing comeback!) just behind him, the Osmers, Stegemann. Zwayer has to struggle now. I dont see him necessarily in 1st group anymore.
And when the commission is consequent, Hategan and Kulbakov should not be in Elite anymore.
