  4. Looks like Helder Martins (ANG) is 4th official in CPV-CMR instead of Dahane Beida.

    1. Yes, he is, which means that all 6 match officials involved in the infamous Mali - Tunisia got another appointment within a week. So, in CAF's view, no one was responsible?

    2. Hahaha - I just noticed sth. Whereas in TUNMLI, Martins de Carvalho was wearing his polar watch (left arm) with a sweatband (right), this time, he is instead wearing a second watch on his right arm. That can’t be a coincidence, right? :D

Btw so far good, expected level performance by Selmi as referee in a normal difficulty game (72’).

      Delete
    3. Yes, Selmi was good in a normal match. I liked his communication, both verbal and body language. I woukd like to see him in a more challenging game.

    4. Haha excellent observation Mikael.

And @Anonymous I think it’s fair to not hold anyone responsible really… how can you blame anyone for a fluke medical emergency? Again, unless Sikazwe’s fitness or diet wasn’t good enough (which both really should be tracked and managed by the referee committee at a tournament like this), it’s not his fault he suffered a heat stroke.

Andreas Ekberg (UEFA 1st) will handle the Greek Cup QF PAOK-AEK. His assistants are Mehmet Culum and Fredrik Klyver. VAR is Vitor Ferreira.

Btw Clattenburg today announced that he will not publish the educational videos with scenes from SL anymore. The reason behind such decision is unknown.

    1. correct IMO. The ball is long in the air (no deflection), so the player has to adjust accordingly. If he doesn't, he has his hand in an unnatural position.

    CMRETH: https://fromsmash.com/CMRETH-JeanJacquesNdalaNgambo-HaythemGuirat

    KMI
08' Offside missed in the build-up to Cameroon's equalizer; missed by both AR1 and VAR (and most likely nearly everyone ;))
27' Possible 2YC to 7ETH after kicking an opponent; I think the strong warning issued by the referee was optimal
32' Goal CMR disallowed for offside (AR1); blatant offside
48' Penalty incident - goalkeeper's tackle; I think everywhere outside the penalty area it would've been a FK (and YC), why judge it differently in the box?
54' Possible foul while gaining possession of the ball in the build-up to 3:1 goal; no replay shown by broadcaster, looks like OK challenge though

    Disciplinary
It was good in the first half - correct yellow cards to 18CMR in 6' after reckless step on foot/illegal use of arm in front of the fourth official and to 7ETH in 15' after trailing leg tackle.

But it was very poor in the second half:
    48' - SPA by 19CMR?
48' - tackle by ETH GK, see above
    60' - tackle by 27CMR in front of AR2
71' - blatant FK and YC missed to 8CMR after reckless studs challenge
74' - blatant FK and YC missed to 25ETH after two-legged tackle
84' - warning 7CMR after late challenge (is it smart to issue warning in this phase of the game?)
88' - correct YC to CMR GK for time wasting after he was clearly warned in 61'
89' - blatant YC missed to 8ETH after SPA

    Lost time compensation
One instead of two minutes added to 1H and three instead of six minutes added to 2H...

Quite disappointing performance from one of the more trusted referees in CAF.

    1. 8' Indeed missed offside :O
48' For me a PK would be very wrong, and I would recommend a review if a PK is given. If the goalkeeper gets such a clear amount on the ball, noPK is expected from the vast majority in the football cycle (and even the strikers and teammates dont protest). There is a bit of contact with the foot of the attacker, but it's nothing dangerous as the foot is in the air. I do feel like the attacker is evading the strong challenge from the goalkeeper. If the striker is braver and gets hit harder a PK would very much be possible. But in such situation the referee can only judge what's in front of him and I really think noPK is the better decision.

Thanks for sharing the clips, I really appreciate you giving your thoughts aswell ;)

  8. Curious about your opinion! Violation Maher at Utrecht-Ajax. Referee Gözübüyük. Maher was already booked in the first half. This tackle 2nd yellow or direct red??

    1. I really can't see a direct RC, for the challenge? He seems to pull out and there is no force at all. Maybe you can give a YC for the bad intent, because for a short time it looks like a weird stomp motion. In real time it looks like a YC but I think no card is the better option, as he was not reckless IMO. Also, I really belive he did get hurt there (you can see his ankle buckle). I think some Ajax players thought he was bluffing, as it is not uncommon to pretend to be on the receiving end if you made a bad tackle yourself. Just my oppinion :)

      Delete
    2. I don’t see a mandatory 2nd Yc either, let alone a straight Rc. Quite coincidental and up to the disciplinary line of the referee to decide for only a free kick or an additional caution.

      Delete
    3. For my feeling Maher tried even to avoid contact with Timber, when het touched him he already kind of apologized. Timber was the one who flies in with stretched legg, so i can understand Gozubuyuk, i think it was unlucky

  9. One of the two situations reported by Dominik from Augsburg - Eintracht Frankfurt. Sorry for the qulity of video and not good audio, but I couldn't find more for a better download:

33' - Penalty given by Jablonski; followed by a lot of confusion, then OFR -> decision YC against attacker (maybe even RC for SFP?)
    https://streamable.com/pbudh2

In my opinion a clear foul by attacker, YC is mandatory, possible RC, however attacker went genuinely for kicking the ball but he hit defender. Never penalty. Strange management of OFR by Jablonski.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks Chefren. Yeah it's a clear foul by the attacker, YC is still okay for me as it was as accidental as a challenge like that can be but very borderline. Jablonski's initial decision (penalty) was bad itself but everything around it wasn't particulary great either. It wasn't even inside the box and there was no advantage given (Augsburg even scored). Management of the OFR was weird and confusing.

I'd be interested in your opinion about the handball situation. Arm was very high (above the shoulder) and I really don't think you can deem it accidental even though there was a bit of contact between both players.

    2. I will try to find the other situation regarding the handball.

  10. CPVBFA: https://fromsmash.com/CPVBFA-AminMuhammadUmar-MahmudMuhammadAshur

    KMI
22' Penalty incident - tripping; it's unfair action by defender who puts his leg in front of the attacking player but on the other hand the latter anticipates the contact and avoids it while falling to the ground. The referee gives a FK for handball of attacking player and one could argue it was a supporting hand, so it's wrong - but if the action of falling down is initiated by the player himself and he plays the ball with his supporting hand, isn't it OK to give a FK for handball? What do you think about IDFK to the attacking team for impeding without contact?
90+2' Penalty incident - tackle; no replay shown unfortunately but very risky tackle indeed...
90+3' Penalty incident - tripping; I have a gut feeling that CPV player put his leg in front of shooting BFA player what would be a tripping but again no replay offered by the broadcaster...

    Disciplinary
The yellow cards given by the Egyptian were mandatory ones:
    36' - 16CPV for SPA
    82' - 22BFA for SPA
    90+2' - 17CPV for SPA/blatant holding

But I very much missed any action against some cynical fouls that not necessarily deserved to be cautioned (but were literally asking for strong warnings):
    12' tripping by 7CPV
    18' impeding by 24BFA
    29' holding by 16CPV
    33' tripping by 9BFA
    47' late challenge by 19BFA
    81' tackle by 11BFA
    90' holding by 17CPV

The game was not very challenging but by not taking any action against such infringements, the referee allowed players to perform cynical fouls without a fear to be booked for them. That combining with unability to reach players in any way, was quite a big point for improvement shown by Amin Muhammad Umar.

  11. Marco Serra with a nightmare moment in Milan - Spezia. At 90 min Milan scores 2-1 but he had just whistled a previous spa foul on the edge of the PA before the ball enteres the goal. Just minutes later Spezia scores 1-2. Big impact on the title race too.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yep, pretty much sums it up-nightmare..

Also, last 5 minutes lookes like he was lost, not ounishing timewasting of Spezia players, not booking Spezia player at the end for dangerous foul on Giroud and not to talk about not allowing advantage for Milan goal.

      Delete
    2. He was about to cry after the missed advantage, immediately realized that he had made an enormous mistake. I'm really sorry for him, very rare to see such scene in serie A. My feelings are with him.

      Delete
    3. How awesome would it be if Spezia would let Milan score uncontested after that mistake?! It happens when a player makes a mistake by overhitting a pass back to the goalkeeper (fairplay), so in theory it could also be done if the referee blows too early and a certain goal is unfairly canceled.

      Delete
    4. I'm very disgusted how much Italian press this morning is highlighting the missed advantage of Serra. It seems like worst than "la mano dei Dios". If we look the action the foul happened put of the box about 20 /( 25 meters form the goal and Messias was into teh box, not very close to the ball.
A referee must take a decision in 1 second and due to the stress of the match it0s not always obvious to wait and check if the action can produce an advantage, Let me say again that messias was a little bit far from teh ball so not so obvious that he have taken the ball and scored.
It's a mistake but I guess not so enormous like media are booming.
      Very disappointed for Serra

    1. What's your opinion on the penalty in 1st half?
IMO, the initial decision to give a idF for the defenders because of dangerous play (straight, high leg) was fully supportable.

      Delete
    2. I exactly wrote that elsehere, the dangerous play against attacker was not a clear and obvious mistake as Milan player raised leg before keeper and therefore referee's whistle had a reason. Nevertheless, the overall perception was about a clear penalty, one must add that. Doveri, the VAR for this game, forced a bit the protocol, I think that another VAR, Irrati among others, but also Aureliano, they are very strict with protocol, would have supported. The fact that the situation was very unexpcted to happen and both referee and AR2 were surprised played a role, I would also say that this was another reason for allowing more a VAR intervention, but strictly accordint to protocol you are right.
Last but not least, indirect free kick for dangerous play seems now a very "old" rule, not used anymore like before.
Modern football wants to see only direct free kicks and penalties...

      Delete
    5. IMO, this is a penalty and the VARint is expected. In the last few years, the UEFA RAPs have been very clear with this (+VARint). 'F9' has twice been an interesting clip for those halfhigh 5050 balls. Sometimes it's the one who kicks the opponent who gets hurt, but even then the stance from UEFA is clear.

    6. https://streamable.com/n5x6sq

I think this is a perfect example where VAR protocol should allow to change the original discission.......this was a clear goal, and in this "very clear" cases i think the referees mistake can make less impact to let VAR allow the goal, so not only cancel goals by VAR, but also allow goals after a wrong whistle, and without any chance to prevent the goal, the keeper didn't have a chance

  13. OT: Felix Zwayer will be part of Sky Germany's documentary series "Meine Geschichte". The episode will air on friday and he will talk about his current situation.
Sky uploaded a teaser on Twitter:
    - got many E-Mails that are unbelievable, very hard to deal with
    - was contacted by the Berlin police that there's a death threat against him on the Internet
    - very difficult especially for family, he had to leave for an international match 3 days after Dortmund-Bayern and when he said goodbye, his wife started crying

I will post another comment with interesting/important statements after watching the episode.

  14. The second situation from Augsburg - Eintracht Frankfurt.

    https://streamable.com/3v5tti

In my opinion clear penalty, ball directly on open raised arm.
Can't add any other arguments, but Dominik, if you know more about DFB assessment, please let me know. These are the decisions that honestly can't be explained, I repeated it many times on the blog, if you don't give this penalty, you can play on for all the possible handballs that can happen...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. DFB have not published a statement (yet), but the general public accepts the non-penalty call and question the VAR intervention. If Jablonski doesn't change his style though, he'll be out for Italian teams very soon I'm guessing.

      Delete
    2. No statement from DFB and I don't think there will be one as this decision is not controversial at all here in Germany. People see it as accidental and accept the decision. As I said before, it's a clear penalty for me. Every argument for handball is fullfilled, nothing further to add.
I don't understand it but I can accept it as long as it is constantly decided that way.

What irritates me is that there seems to be no guideline for handball in UEFA competitions nowadays. We've seen it before; handball situations will be decided completely different depending on where the referee (+VAR team) is from. Surely there should be some guidelines?

  15. Expected appointment with Makkelie for PSV - Ajax, but it's the 5th year in a row that Makkelie has been appointed for exactly this game. Is this common in other countries as well, that a referee is just 'attached' to a certain fixture (especially such a high profile game)?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It used to happen with Mazic in Belgrade derby.

      Delete
    2. Bebek also had a stretch of I think 1 year in a row handling Croatian big mtch, Dinamo vs Hajduk.

Other than that and Mazic, I cant think of another example.

      Delete
    3. Yes very typical, the same game for 5 years in a row. Although this must be a sort of 'coincidence' as Kuipers was also available the past 4 years.

In prior season, Makkelie was appointed to both FEY-AJA and AJA-FEY. That was also quite particular.

I still think that KNVB initially wanted to appoint Makkelie to Feyenoord-Ajax last month and (last minute) decided to choose Higler when it turned out to be an empty stadium.
To be honest, I'm completely fine with Makkelie appointed to all top games in NL, as refereeing is deemed top sport and referees should be rewarded for good performances, instead of ‘dividing’ all top games to keep other refs satisfied. However, when the same ref is appointed over and over again, it also tells us something about the level of other referees in a country. Quite worrying if you ask me.

      Delete
    4. And I want to add something with regard to Higler's appointment to FEY-AJA (Classico) last month.

Normally, only FIFA internationals that are doing well in CL/EL are appointed to the 'Classico' (Feyenoord-Ajax) game. I like Higler and really hope he can take that final step in Europe, but so far no CL games for him (and only 1 EL game) and still, he got the Classico last month. Is that FAIR to referees like Makkelie, who HAD to perform well in European competitions first, before getting the big appointment?

      Delete
    5. In recent years, Blom, Nijhuis, Gozobuyuk, Van Boekel and Makkelie officiated Feyenoord-Ajax. And now Higler.
Actually, I think the appointment of Makkelie make sense. First PSV-Ajax was a bit the 'second match'. In this time, Makkelie was also nummer two. This season, this match was clearly the biggest one, with two well-achieving and not easy teams, with fanatic coaches. I think the appointment shows now that he is the number 1.

      Delete
    6. The last 4/5 years the Dutch referees sadly enough don't make much progress in their careers, Kuipers and Makkelie, sometimes Gozubuyuk where appointed, but Van Egmond (their boss) never wanted to take risk, for my feeling this is absolutely not thinking in the future, the other 5 international referees never had any big games, and now iff they get them (like Lindhout with NEC-Vitesse) struggle and even fail, because Kuipers and Makkelie took all the big games for to long! Off course referees should fail and struggle in their first few big games, that's how they learn and get experience.... like every single referee, but now we lack so much experience only Makkelie and Gozubuyuk and sometimes Higler should be trusted for big matches, i ask myself why do we have 7 names on the fifalist, while Van Egmond only trust Makkelie/Gozubuyuk and Higler, time for a new refereeboss who give opportunities to all the fifa-referees....and not has this predictable policy, but who has the courage to appoint a surprising name, fresh blood is also good!

15', 84', 86' - Minor penalty appeals, nothing illegal there
21' Penalty incident - head clash; I think both players equally responsible, good play-on call
47' Penalty incident - who fouls who?; I can't see anything illegal by GUI player and SEN player holds his opponent by leg when falling, correct call

    Disciplinary
Mixed bag. The yellow cards given in 49' (6GUI, reckless tackle), 64' (8GUI, cynical challenge - not by the book but tactically valuable card), 75' (8SEN, reckless use of arm), 80' (3GUI, SPA-holding), 83' GK GUI (time wasting) were all spot on.
However, I missed a (strong) reaction against 3GUI who committed three almost cautionable offences in 28', 30' and 54'. To take no action against those infringements was quite poor image. As well as no reaction against impeding by 8SEN in 3' and blatant holding by 10GUI in 77' (here I think it's a mandatory YC in UEFA).

The referee was able to easily communicate with players, smile, joke and maybe that friendly attitude prevented Tessema from issuing some strong warnings / yellow cards.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with you. 64' was less a YC than 77'. Why do you think it was a tactically valuable card?

      Delete
    2. Because 8GUI sprinted from quite long distance only in order to committ that foul -> cynical character of the foul; if unpunished could lead to retaliation later in the game. But well, disciplinary matters were not the strongest point of this performance (and many others too, unfortunately...)

23' Penalty incident - handball; no replay so hard to judge if there was handball at all but even if, the ZIM player played the ball on his own hand, so no infringement anyway
37' Penalty incident - charging; again no replay but looks like an exaggerated fall
52' Reckless-SFP tackles by 17MWI and 4ZIM; the referee with total blackout, not whistling a foul here was scandalous; I would still classify both tackles as YC only but no reaction by Beida was really shocking...

    Disciplinary
Mauritanian started well with yellow cards to 12ZIM for reckless step on foot (20') and 15ZIM for trailing leg tackle (29').
Then, I missed reaction on some tactical or stronger challenges in 22' (handball by 8MWI), 32' (step on foot by 22ZIM), 36' (late challenge by 9MWI), 46' (late challenge by 12ZIM).
49' - correct YC to 2MWI for reckless kick.
52' - the above mentioned blackout resulting in two reckless-SFP tackles not punished at all.
73' - tactical foul of 21MWI and blatant delaying the restart by 14MWI, again no reaction...
    83' - correct YC for blatant SPA-holding
    86' - SPA by 2MWI?

    Lost time compensation
Well, one instead of four minutes added to 1H and four instead of seven minutes added to 2H...

Technically, a weak performance by Dahane Beida but somehow his style is really good - serious, strong leader on the pitch. He has to improve his foul detection (52'!!!), disciplinary control and lost time compensation though!!!

    2. Extremely difficult case for VAR here in my opinion.
Very, very minimal contact, I would say 100% without any influence on attacker, so VAR intervention looks rather justified. But I think that being extremely strict to protocol, this intervention is wrong. In this case, however, in my opinion, differently from other calls, I can fully understand the point of view of VAR and this is what football wants to see.

  23. Red card in Ghana vs. Comoros after intervention - another classic example of the too outcome-focused interpretation of SFP in modern football. Real examples of excessive force go unpunished because we can find some small reason that they don’t fill all the tick boxes, but we have ejections like this. A complete abdication of common sense :/.

Mikael what I would tell you is that asides from CAF Referees being so so Lenient there was a clear mandate from the referees to the players at the start of the tournament not to lead any tackle like that, in as much as the ball was so inviting always take into consideration the safety of your opponent which is greater than anything anybody can talk about in football and Andre Ayew did not do that and almost broke off the hand of the goalkeeper!!! It was a dangerous tackle!!! It’s because it was not on the leg area but if we perceive the hand as we perceive the leg then it was really really bad and a leg could be fractured if it was to the goal keepers leg and unfortunately he fractured the goal keepers shoulder, he wasn’t far of from his face.

The report claims that the chiefs of the referee association (AIA) have apologised to Milan.
They also posted out how Serra made several errors during the game, including a clear penalty for Milan in the first half, which was spotted only after a VAR check."

    ReplyDelete

    1. AIA didn't make any public statement (as always, they don't communicate) and the public apologies were denied, it was an invention by journalists. After the final whistle, Andrea Gervasoni, former serie A referee and now in Rocchi's serie A committee, went to dressing room for assessing Serra performance. In this occasion I assume that somebody misunderstood the situation. However the problem is that AIA doesn't communicate at all, so I repeat again that you can say everything without the chance of being contradicted. That's not good, I hope that a new course can start.
Having said that, Serra is at moment working as VAR in coppa Italia game Sassuolo - Cagliari, this appointment had been published on Monday's morning, before the fatal game between Milan and Spezia. Today serie A appointments for next round on week end were expected, but nothing so far, clearly this time Rocchi doesn't want to repeat again a possible mistake and he is waiting for tomorrow's coppa Italia games.
About the suspension of Serra, this is sure, after today's duties, he will leave for a quite long time, there is also the break for national teams, so we will see him again in serie B in the middle of next month, more or less.
To add, on Sunday we have Milan - Juventus, my prediction is Valeri, should be quite sure after the last assignments he got recently (only serie B and minor games in about a month). This will be an enormous task for him, and I could fully understand the choice of appointing an old referee, without too much to lose for this game in case of negative performance. Then, later, we will have another very hot game... Milan's derby.
We will see the choices by Rocchi.

  32. GABGHA: https://send.cm/d/82OW

Although during the game there was no (serious) KMI, the game turned out to be very intense. It was the most rough game of those I've already watched at this AFCON.

The number of cynical fouls was very high. The problem is that the Algerian referee, who was initially appointed only as VAR for this tournament, did nothing to de-escalate the rough way of playing.

I will just list the incidents:
    04' missed SPA-tripping by 23GHA
    07' SPA-like foul by 21GHA
    10' late challenge by 6GAB
    12', 13' fouls by 3GAB
    14' off-ball impeding by 25GAB
24' YC to 25GAB for reckless kick; correct
    31' late challenge by 20GAB
36' YC to 5GHA for SPA-holding / illegal use of arm
    38' studs challenge by 12GAB
    43' late challenge by 17GAB
45' YC to 12GAB for reckless SPA-tackle; correct
    54' SPA-like foul by 17GAB
57' YC to 3GAB for reckless studs challenge; correct
59' YC to 8GHA for SPA-charging; OK if called but was it a foul?
    61' late challenge by 5GAB
69' accidental step on leg by 15GAB
81' YC to GK GHA for delaying the restart; correct
83' step on foot by 2GAB
    86' late challenge by 6GHA

87' the most problematic scene for the whole game:
-> missed (reckless?) kick by 17GAB
-> GHA player, seeing an injured teammate, kicks the ball out of FoP
-> GAB players, instead of giving the ball back to GHA, create an attack and score an equalizer

Ghana players understandably harboured a grudge against their opponents and it all escalated after the final whistle, topped off with YC to 15GHA (dissent against ref) and RC to 25GHA (striking an opponent).

Three words describing Mr Lahlou Benbraham's performance: too much leniency!!!

      It is simulation.

      Delete
    2. Hm, not sure. There is also an action with the left arm, which I had previously missed. So I am not that conviced anymore, that it is a mistake. Surely quite soft, but rather no VAR stuff, I think - assuming the referee had the correct perception.
And I don't think, it is simulation (in the sense of YC).

      Delete
    3. Never a penalty for me but problematic in terms of VAR intervention is indeed as Philipp mentioned the arm action. But surely even with that in mind the way better decision would be NO penalty and VAR intervention imo. But might be a bit tricky for VAR depending on what Gomes said he punished.

      Delete
    4. Maybe soft penalty kick, but, in the big picture, smart decision by Gomes to give it at 0-3, to show Algerians they are going out without any referee issues. You may not agree, but is another way to avoid issues with the losing team, especially when that is a power within CAF. It is not always black or white and referees have to navigate with flexibility.

10' Missed YC to 4MAR for reckless kick
16' YC to 7COM for reckless tackle; good advantage leading to goal being scored and correct yellow card afterwards
18' YC to 10COM for reckless use of arm; I think Moroccan player made it worse than it really was, no contact with face, wrong caution
41' YC to 15MAR for reckless (SPA-)challenge; correct, especially after two YCs to Comoros earlier in the game
42' YC to 2MAR for reckless use of arm; correct
75' Possible YC to 18COM after kicking an opponent
78' Possible YC to 3MAR after stepping on goalkeeper's leg

2nd YC is OK for being too late, but there actually is not that much contact, therefore not mandatory IMO.

  39. Referee is fully correct in both incidents.
There isn't anything "SOFT" about the correct PK call. The defender knows that he's beaten. So he blatantly lunges his body into the path of the attacking player (clearly playing the man only) taking him down with him in the process. PK

The only comment about the 2nd YC incident I can say. Is that the image of the referee pulling the cards further reiterates how terrible and cheap those Umbro Referee kits are.

A lot of protests by the Gambians and therefore trouble for Guerrero to manage the penalty execution.

Yes, defender puts leg and this is an argument for calling penalty, active movement, but what about contact? Can you be sure that it exists? Very theatrical fall, for me a simulation, I would dare to say, but again VAR seems to be forced to support.

      Delete
    2. Indeed there seems to be no contact.
But in that case, it must be a VAR intervention, right? Because most likely the referee had a wrong perception.
Of course only possible, if VAR can be sure about no contact.

      Delete
    3. There is definitely contact IMO. The foot touches the foot, which ricochets off the own shin. It's one of those where the attacker could definitely stay on his feet without much disadvantage.. the fall was like a dive, but I'm pretty sure there is slight contact.

      Delete
    4. Clear and obvious contact. I applaud the referee for his "eagle eyed" vision in spotting the foul. Is the fall theatrical? Sure. But that doesn't take away from the FACT that the defender swipes the attackers foot. Furthermore, taking into consideration the attackers movement, change of direction, and having one foot off the ground. Physically it doesn't take much to bring down the player. PK

54' Too quick whistle to signal that the ball went out of the field of play - goal scored by NGA shortly afterwards; huge mistake to not allow NGA to finish their action; and to wait for VAR confirmation although he blew the whistle clearly before the goal being scored...
67' Following an on-field review, penalty kick awarded to Sudan after step on foot / holding by 2NGA (YC); well, quite weird situation as I think the step on foot is totally accidental and without a real impact on an opponent, the holding is quite blatant though but I got impression that SDN player just used it all to appeal for this penalty; I have some doubts regarding VAR intervention but after OFR the referee had no choice but to give a penalty (and YC)
90+2' Penalty incident - charging; impossible to judge without a replay

I really don't know if anyone but me watch games involving Sudan :D It's the roughest team I have ever seen. They played like that at the Arab Cup, too. Meanwhile, the referees seem to be not fully prepared for SDN's aggressive way of play and allow too much in their games.

Apart from that, I liked Victor Gomes' style. He was able to reach players, talk with them, smile but also be very serious (57'). He missed two advantages in 76' and 89' and should avoid such basic mistakes like too quick whistle with VAR in use (54'). To be less lenient would be preferable as well but it refers to almost every referee at this tournament...

    1. 23' VC could definitely be an option. I would prefer a RC, don't know if it is enough for VAR though, as it was not 'violent'. In an important tournament, maybe the referees are advised to not give RC if it's not violent..
54' Very big mistake. I don't know how he can be so sure, as there was no AR on that side. I think giving a foul would have made much more sense and would have been supportable, but soft. He is very lucky that the game has already been decided.

31' YC to 15GNB for SPA-holding; possible RC for DOGSO, the only argument against RC is that the attacking player had no control over the ball in the moment of foul but the likelihood of getting it was quite high; difficult situation and I think the powers that be prefer YC for such fouls nowadays while I would opt for a red card
50' YC to 17EGY for reckless studs tackle; possible RC for SFP as there is full studs contact above ankle; here the argument against RC is that the leg of 17EGY was bent in the moment of contact
57' Penalty incident - handball; hand is close to the body, rather not punishable and replays are inconclusive though
69' Good onside by AR1 at 0:1 goal
82' Following an on-field review, 1:1 goal disallowed for a foul in the build-up; I guess everybody had a gut feeling of big injustice while watching it live but the careless kick by GNB player was really decisive in this scenario - EGY player couldn't plant his leg properly and lost the balance; clear foul and correct (and brave) VAR intervention

    Disciplinary
Lenient beginning by Pacifique Ndabihawenimana: possible yellow cards not given to 10EGY (illegal use of arm, 18'), 15GNB (SPA?, 20') and 12EGY (tackle, 22'). Then, mandatory yellow card to 18GNB for very reckless use of arm correctly issued in 25', followed two above mentioned incidents in 31' and 50'. Correctly punished dissent by 16GNB after disallowed goal, too.

The Burundian official prefers to be in the background, jumping in only when needed and visibly being a calm person. He is able to talk with players in a friendly manner but when mobbed (31', 82') he doesn't look secure and self-confident enough.

10' Penalty kick awarded to CIV after tripping; correct
25' Possible foul (holding) when gaining possession prior to 1:0 goal; no replay but holding seems quite clear to be honest; the allegedly fouled player managed to kick the ball afterwards - does it have any impact on possible VAR intervention?
42' Possible violent conduct by 7SLE; no good replay but it seems he pushed his opponent in the head; rather unsporting behaviour than violent conduct
76' Penalty incident - pushing; unfortunately no replay shown...

    Disciplinary
    04' Possible YC to 19SLE - SPA?
16' Possible YC to 28SLE - illegal use of arm
42' Missed YC to 7SLE - off-the-ball push in the head
    52' YC to 2SLE for SPA-holding; correct
90' Possible YC to 21CIV - strike with head when fighting for the ball
90+5' YC to 12SLE for goal celebration; correct

Maguette Ndiaye is a typical boss on the field of play - tall, muscular man arousing respect with his look and strong leadership. Leniency is a part of this tournament but I detected three other mistakes - two instead of four added minutes to 1H; totally wrong dropped ball execution in 71' (to wrong team, not caring about 4m distance of an opponent) and missed advantage in 81'. Nothing serious though. Another game(s) should be a certainty.

22', 79' Penalty appeals from Algeria but nothing illegal there
23' Algeria's goal disallowed due to offside (AR1); correct
60' Possible 2YC to 9ALG after handball in a wall; play-on, punishable handball?
83' Algeria's goal disallowed due to offside (AR2); correct
86' Penalty incident - tripping; missed YC to 8ALG for simulation
90+3' Possible 2YC to 11EQG after reckless(?) tackle behind an opponent in front of AR1

    Disciplinary
02' Excellent warning to 10ALG after studs-up challenge
03' YC to 9ALG for reckless charging; correct
08' YC to 21ALG after illegal use of arm; 6EQG exaggerated it but supportable call
09' YC to 11EQG for SPA-tripping; rather correct but not sure if there was a contact at all
16' SPA-impeding by ALG player?; play-on, no replay shown
22', 27' Borderline challenges by 11EQG and 22ALG, supportable no cards
31' Misssed YC to 22EQG for reckless step on foot after advantage was played and good warning to 6EQG for subsequent foul
34' Possible YC to 22ALG for SPA-tackle; supportable no card as the only target of fouled player was to win a free kick
41' Possible YC to 4EQG for SPA-holding; play-on; I think missed at least FK here
43' YC to 4EQG for reckless kick; correct
45' YC to 9EQG and 2ALG for delaying the restart by not respecting referee (after FK for a phantom foul tbf)
59' Possible YC to 14EQG for reckless studs challenge; FK awarded to EQG after weird but rather fair tackle
60' Possible 2YC to 9ALG for SPA-handball (handball in a wall blocking a shot on goal); punishable handball?
    62' Missed YC to 8EQG for SPA-holding
84' Possible YC to 22EQG for reckless charge
86' Missed YC to 8ALG for simulation
90+3' Possible 2YC to 11EQG after late tackle behind an opponent; reckless?
90+4' YC to 21EQG for being felled by AR2 is really bad image as he did nothing wrong there but instead possible YCs to 8ALG and 17EQG for starting a conflict and to 15ALG for provocative behaviour

Well, it was an extremely difficult game to referee. Both teams were ill-tempered and played in a rough manner from the first minutes of the game. The behaviour of players who NEVER respected referee, who was quite friendly at the beginning but became more and more annoyed, was terrible. They even laughed at him when he was really angry at constantly delayed free kicks due to their behaviour. You can compare their attitude to spoiled kids...

But when players behave like that you have to be a law enforcer and avoid any contact with them. Instead of being angry, Mario Escobar could have adopted an isolated cool boss attitude but that's the lesson he will surely learn from this game. Such a demanding but real learning experience!

On the other hand, CAF instruction for this tournament is to avoid too long breaks for medical treatment (we can often see referees calling for stretcher in order to get the player out of the field as quickly as possible) and other stuff. That's why we can well understand Mario Escobar why he was so angry at players who made the game full of breaks.

Well, there were some wrong (non-)FK decisions, some missed cards and doubtful management (somehow forced by CAF instructions) but I still find Mario Escobar a strong referee who fully deserves a World Cup nomination.

07', 34' Mali's penalty appeals; no (good) replays, impossible to judge
40' YC to 19MLI after follow-through studs tackle above ankle; possible red card, VAR was checking the incident for some time but decided to not intervene; as always difficult to know what the powers that be expect in such situations but most common (and expected?) solution is a yellow card for such challenges
53' Possible 2YC to 6GAM after blatant tripping; neither a clear SPA nor clearly reckless, no (second) yellow card is OK but I would've liked a strong intervention from the referee
74' Following an OFR, penalty kick for off-the-ball impeding awarded in favour of Mali; not sure if VAR would call referee in every (con-)federation but I'm OK with this intervention and penalty decision
86' Following an OFR, penalty kick for handball awarded to Gambia; I don't like the idea behind punishing such accidental handballs, I don't think the OFR was a must but considering how much GAM protested against no-call and that Mali was awarded a penalty after OFR earlier in the game, the fact that VAR called referee is understandable / supportable. Then, everyone expected a penalty to be given, so...
90+4' YC to 23GAM after studs challenge; possible red card - contact clearly above the ankle but on the other hand not a full one, more a scratch by a side of the boot; correct no VAR intervention

    Disciplinary
19' Missed YC to 17MLI for SPA-impeding; warning is not enough here
20' YC to 11MLI for reckless challenge; correct
24' YC to 6GAM for reckless use of arm; correct
40' YC to 19MLI for reckless follow-through studs tackle; see above
42' YC to 6MLI for reckless kick; correct
53' Possible 2YC to 6GAM after tripping; correct no 2YC, see above
65' Possible YC to 4MLI after kick; very accidental one so we have to decrease the sanction: either SFP to reckless or reckless to careless, I'm OK with no card here
90+4' YC to 23GAM for reckless challenge; borderline to RC but still YC imo, see above

    Lost time compensation
Real disaster here. Three instead of five minutes added to 1H and... four instead of ten/eleven minutes added to 2H. Incredible how much time was lost in the 2H and the referee had no idea about that! In addition, whistling for a half-time when there is a corner kick to execute and the ball went off the field of play several seconds BEFORE three added minutes have gone was equally terrible.

In general, I very much liked the overall body language of Samir Guezzaz, he is clearly a very talented referee with firm and professional presence.
