    New salaries for referees was published in Uefa course yesterday, salaries are not based on category of referee anymore, but on the competition and also whise stage of competition...Referees are shocked...especialy elite...

      wow if that's true of course to maintain fairness the assignment of referees per competition must be very strict in the sense that elite referees should not be assigned to UECL events for 1 match in the group phase and can only be assigned to UECL in the knockout phase, as well as for category 1 referees their territory should only be in UEL and UECL only. I think the way the salary per competition is thought out is somehow still very unfair to elite referees.

      except for the fact that the division of categories is now very open to opportunities, in the sense that elite referees can be relegated and every season the status of referees can be change (categories seemingly become meaningless, everything is purely based on performance in 1 season)

      Committee realized that they couldn't go on too strictly with categories, because once a referee gets a promotion to Elite, he can do everything but he is not demoted. Under this aspect, it is absolutely fair to pay based on the match, I think that step by step UEFA could abolish the system of categories, having only to think about a suitable referee for a certain game. On the other hand, of course this goes against the very good Elite referees who are penalized because they don't have a plus if compared to a Category 1 doing well and getting very often games in big competitions.

      If my source is correct, Makkelie will get less than 50% of the amount compared to the same match played in Tiraspol last year.

      I agree with Chefren. It's not a bad change.

      Imagine that Kruzliak or Sidiropoulos get the same salary in a UEL/UECL matches as Elite referees get in the QF-SF of the Champions League.

      In addition, many domestic leagues use categories as well. In some countries, a classico is almost twice the salary of a relegation match.

      Remember that some referees (e.g. Siebert) are assigned to sonorous matches when they were still category 1, waiting for their compatriot to retire? If they are paid as a category 1, it would be unfair imo.

      Since Rosetti took office in 2018, there hasn't been any single demotion from Elite to First (last ones were Nijhuis and Moen in 2017, under Collina) and this was a matter discussed several times on this blog.

      So despite the on paper meritocratic nature of this referee fees reform, it looks also as a lazy way to solve the problem mentioned above and making categories more and more meaningless, cuz until now there was a group of referees earning 'Elite' salaries with 'First' appointments (this group is by far the most injured by the reform) and vice-versa (the most benefitted ones)

      They are maybe not demoted but a lot od them are for sure demotivated now. Especially referees recently promoted to 2nd and 1st group.

      That might also explain Aytekins sudden retirement from international football. As elite referee without perspective, he certainly is one of the main targets.

    Did anyone tell Rosetti that HE actually controls the categories and is free to make demotions as well as (political) promotions :D?! And does anyone really trust the laziest leader of European refereeing ever (at least since 1980s time) to carefully sort out appointments fairly in terms of recent form, performance, ability etc... now making decisions against Italian teams + Paris SG becomes a financial question as well.

    No wonder all the referees laugh behind your back, Mr Rosetti (this blog isn't the only place where him being Čeferin's puppet is discussed, let's say :)). But this is no laughing matter at all.

    Referees in futsal have only daily allowances per day, not any tax or bonus for match. Same money if you are referee in preliminary round of champions league or referee in final game of EURO. SO no complains for sallary in football.

      football and futsal are very different! If you want to compare something there are 3 absolute conditions in sequence before you can do it,
      1. Must use common sense
      2. Must be apple to apple
      3. Look at the details first

    In my country and many other countries around, referees have always been paid based on the match level (Division 1, 2, 3) and not the referee's category. Some matches are more difficult than others, so it makes sense that referees are paid based on the match level.

    For those of you who have direct knowledge, I would be interested to know whether referees in England, Germany, Spain, France and other top leagues are being paid based on match level (Premier League vs Football League, Bundesliga vs 2. Bundesliga, Primera Division vs Segunda Division, Ligue 1 vs Ligue 2, etc) or their category? For example, is Siebert paid differently (match fees) if he does a Bundesliga match compared to a 2.Bundesliga match or gets the same match fees based on his category (FIFA referee)?

      In Germany, referees get a base salary depending on their category (FIFA, 1st division ref, 1st division AR, 2nd division ref) and a match fee depending on the match level.

      In Spain, the referees and ARs of 1st and 2nd divisions get a fixed yearly amount (different depending on their role and level). They only officiate at the division their level entitles them to (a 1st div referee will never referee a 2nd Division or lower game, even if coming back from injury or is a top game at that lower level, which is strict and very different from other countries more flexible in moving refs up and down the levels as needed). They get paid per game the same amount no matter if it's a high risk game, a derby, a game for the league title or a dull lower-middle table clash

      Yeah, Spanish system is particular in terms that the referee categories are completely hermetic. LaLiga referees NEVER handle 2nd division games.

    In England the Premier refs renew every year with PGMOL their contracts and they all have different conditions based on experience, international or not, their media exposure etc. The base year salary between a new and low profile ref to the category and a well experienced and media liked ref who is often in charge of big games can be as different as almost double the amount

      It seems the match fees are based on match level, not on the referee's category. Some sources indicate match fees of 1,150 for a Premier League match and 600 for the level immediately below.

    Aleksei Kulbakov in UEL Shkupi-Shamrock, isn't this is shameful appointment for elite referee even for B level elite referee. Istvan Vad in Bodo, I think geopolitical still involved for some reason why Kulbakov in North Macedonia not in Norway.

      More generally, these appointments explain us why UEFA took the decision about fees for referees based on the games they got and not the category, Kulbakov and other Elite referees are always appointed in such games, but yes, I must admit this is even less than the "normal substandard". Nevertheless, still something good for him, given that Belarusan appointments had been suspended. Youi must consider all factors. And then yes, it is possible he will get games without spotlights, and only in certain countries and for certain teams. We will see.

      Rather very harsh, one cant' say 100% wrong, because a SPA would be possible, but the perception is that should have been whistled without card and nobody would have complained. Less than supportable, but not 100% wrong, if we can talk about this nuance :D
