Great work by Euro Soccer Referee, congratulations and thank you. I tried to interpret the numbers and I think 8/9 viewings is the average number, many are below some are above average. I would say that by far the most used observers are the Spanish, all with a high number of viewings, then Portuguese, Romanians, Swedes.

ReplyDeleteShouldn't this atleast be VAR check?
ReplyDeletehttps://twitter.com/i/status/1739043583460618244.
Besides that very ugly game with lenient Kardesler.
You would expect that in match this magnitude but stats don't lie.
45 fouls,7 bookings and plenty talking and gestures that can't be tolerated,I think that one Edin Dzeko protested 10 times atleast.
After match both sides are complaining.
Galata is saying they have been robbed by Kardesler, that clear penalty was no whistled and that whole Turkey is against them.
Fener is saying that they create such image and they manipulate system.
Anyway, their next match is on Friday,SuperCup.
Interesting to see who handles that.
I will not be surprised if we see some international name due to fact that venue of playing is in Saudi Arabia.
I have touched on this issue in my previous analyses of Turkish football. Today, we learned that the broadcaster does not send all the footage to the VAR room. Last year, it was revealed that some footage that was not broadcast on TV was sent to the president of Fenerbahçe via whatsapp by the former head of the referee committee. I am sure that the president of the club has the best camera footage of this position. This position happens at the penalty point and none of the 26 cameras can capture this position. This is unbelievable but I am not surprised anymore.
DeleteThe Football Federation (TFF) interviewed Turkish referee Serdar Gözübüyük for the Super Cup final. Gözübüyük wanted the VAR referees for the match from the Netherlands, but the TFF rejected it. Former referee Fırat Aydınus said that the referee for this match will be Abdülkadir Bitigen (all Aydınus' predictions so far have been correct).
Even if you are not convinced by the intention, the situation is at least careless striking and therefore certainly should lead to an OFR for a missed penalty.
DeleteThen, the referee can still decide, whether it is VC for him or just the penalty.
This is very clear penalty. Evident mistake by VAR. As Philipp says, surely foul + careless so missed penalty by VAR. Impossible to find reasons to play on (ball was in play).
DeleteWhere is Damir Skomina?
ReplyDeleteHe decided to quit refereeing, so he is not a UEFA observer.
DeleteI really miss his style and ability, Skomina was an excellent referee
ReplyDeleteAnastásios Sidirópoulos (Kostarás, Dimitriádis; VAR Evangélou) in Al-Ittihad Jiddah v An-Nassr Riyadh in Saudi League.
ReplyDeleteAny game between the big 4 teams in Saudi League must be very tense. And difficult to officiate for the referees consequently.
DeleteI was wondering if the Saudis care about what referees they receive. Is it the same thing for them if Marciniak or Turpin come to do the difficult job or if a low Elite or First Category Ref is sent? Or simply as long as the referee is not from Saudi it is alright for them? I guess that the Saudi FA makes a request to UEFA and ask for referees for some specific games and not directly to the National Federations. And then the Ref Com look at the table and decide how important the game is and select a referee, informing his country FA. This is purely my guess based on logics, I don't have any info about the process.
General question: Which female referees have officiated a Champions League match? How many did each officiate? I know that Frappart was the first one in 2020.
ReplyDeleteFrappart only has officiated in CL GS, she has 3 games
DeleteOh thanks, and if we go one level down? Same question for Europa League (UEFA Cup)?
DeleteKateryna Monzul handled a couple of Europa League GS matches 2-3 years ago (Gent - Slovan Liberec and Dinamo Zagreb - Rapid Wien) - and ftr she made a mess in both of them.
DeleteShe also was appointed to a Conference League game in its inaugural season (Copenhagen vs Lincoln Red Imps)
https://www.repubblica.it/sport/calcio/2023/12/27/news/orsato_arabia_arbitri_offerta_saudi_league-421759743/?ref=RHLF-BG-P16-S4-T1
ReplyDeleteThe most popular Italian referee was offered double his salary to move to the Saudi Pro league. With the guarantee of a future as a manager.
Daniele Orsato requested by Saudi Arabia. According to Tuttosport, the Saudi Pro League - after the compulsive shopping of players, has decided to invest in the refereeing class. And they would like to take away from our Serie A the most representative referee who, despite his 48 years, is still among the most appreciated and known by our fans.
Orsato has already refereed 5 matches in Arabia in 2023.
In addition to a match in the top flight of the United Arab Emirates (Al-Ain-Al-Wahda), the referee from Veneto officiated five matches in Arabia in 2023: the first in January, the big match between Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal, the last one in September, when he was on the pitch for the match between Al-Ittihad and Al-Fateh.
Double offer for Orsato: first as referee, then as manager.
The Saudi Pro League offered to pay him double what he receives in Italy. Guaranteeing him two possibilities in 2024: if he no longer wanted to continue on the pitch, he could become the country's top referee manager, with a much higher salary than in Italy. It would be a setback for the Italian Referees Association, ready to welcome Orsato to the upper levels when he retires.
The referee for the Turkish Super Cup match has been determined.
ReplyDeleteAccording to this, Abdulkadir Bitigen will officiate the Super Cup match between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe.

Wow, difficult moment for the VARs in Arsenal - West Ham, 14'. I guess that they could not find an image to prove that the ball was out and therefore the original decision was kept.
ReplyDeletehttps://ibb.co/NK0Yh9P
DeleteIndeed very unlucky situation for VAR, I think the picture on the left can alow us to say it was 99% out but the evidence is impossible due to the player covering the ball in the closer footage. They couldn't draw a conclusion, correct by VAR to support.

BREAKING Galatasaray vs Fenerbahce cup final in Saudi Arabia cancelled 'as clubs refuse to play'
ReplyDeleteThe contest had been slated to take place on Friday night in Saudi Arabia. However, it has been reported that the two sides refused to play the game due to Saudi allegedly having requested to not allow the Turkish national anthem to be played prior to kick-off.
Additionally, it has also been claimed that a banner of Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, was not allowed to be displayed in the ground.

ReplyDeleteWhat do you guys think as a VAR and as a referee?
https://streamable.com/hykbzv
All opinions are highly appreciated🙏🏻
I think that it's not a penalty, attacker was already falling when I saw contact in legs. Not VAR stuff, regardless of decision in field
Delete@ESTref Thank you for your opinion, what about the holding? Did you notice it?
DeleteVAR called for OFR for persistent holding but the referee decided to play on.
Only the tackle wouldn't be enough for an OFR, but we have the holding., I think it is a very difficult situation, maybe live you can see the tackle but not exactly the holding, so I wouldn't be surprised about an OFR. Nevertheless, to me if we stay 100% to protocol, as ESTref said, this should be supported, also because referee made gesture. I think penalty is more expected decision because you have many elements, but play on still "acceptable". It can also depend on the discretion of referee, difficult to say 100% black or white.
DeleteOkay, double-checked it now, and the holding is looking like penalty :D
DeleteDanny Makkelie (Steegstra, Inia; VAR Dieperink) will handle the Ash-Shabab vs Al-Wahda game in Saudi Arabia today.

Firstly, thank you for your great work!
DeleteAbout the penalty: Here we see the problem with VAR that cannot be solved. As long as there is contact, VAR won‘t intervene which generally might be reasonable but due to this VAR doesn‘t intervene in this case of a blatant „dive“ (not by the rulebook, since there was contact of course). The fact that Jota runs 2 or three steps without any impact on him and then embarrassingly goes to ground makes it clear that this is a clear case of cheating. Football has become a game where the team that cheats the best wins…
Jonas, absolutely right.
DeleteA very clear simulation indeed in my opinion, attacker could decide to continue the action, this is very evident, but he opted for falling and then getting penalty with some delay because he was in doubt about what to do. The contact impedes VAR to intervene and you have this outcome...
42' stopping the game and a YC is better than advantage and no yc here. Taylor lost control of the last few minutes of a half after this
DeleteI love this "2 or 3 more step" stuff. He took ONE more step. One. The first "step" (contact with ground) after the foul action was always going to occur as that right leg is in the air when the goalkeeper hits him. He then plants his left foot and then falls.
DeleteBut more to the point, I don't understand why we want to call this simulation. An attacker skillfully rounds the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper attempts a save and instead hits his opponent. It's an absolute empty net if Jota can stay on his feet and a certain goal. And we are going to put ourselves in the head of the attacker and...
A) Determine that he must have preferred the penalty to the open net, therefore he had incentive to simulate AND
B) Excuse the play of the goalkeeper who missed the ball and struck his opponent while punishing the attacker?
We are our own worst enemies sometimes. This should always be a penalty. It's a penalty in any game that any of us referee without VAR. It should be the same at this level. VAR was not introduced to create more controversies than it solved, but here we are, I suppose.
Also,we have to say it that Taylor is having pretty mediocre and for his standards bad season.
DeleteI repeat,for HIS STANDARDS.
Too many controversies this season surounding him and too many matches that he loses control.
Some crucial decisions were also wrong, resulting in one matchday demotion.
We could say that he is living under his past glory,so he's still getting top matches as result of that.
I dont know what has happened to him;maybe last year's EL Final trauma is still there or something else but for sure he has been mediocre this season.
And ina match where Liverpool needs every point and we all know Newcastle and theie dark arts of football,we could all asume that it would be challenging match to handle as it was.

Especially the handball is very interesting, I think it should've been a penalty given the player's action is targeted only to block a pass and his supporting arm is widely outstretched at the moment of ball contact.
First one absolutely not a penalty for me, the attacker is searching for the contact. The second one should probably be considered correct by PL standards, but this is just another one of those that gets judged very differently in different countries, and in some this might even be VAR stuff.

ReplyDeleteIt seems that they are using a database with some old information, indeed for the referees who were already on FIFA list on a different position / nation, the original year of first appointment is reported. Just as example, Paolo Silvio Mazzoleni is now new international FIFA VAR for Italy, you can find him on the site but it is reported FIFA since 2011. This was the year when he became FIFA referee for the first time 13 years ago. So I think possible they can't highlight changes / new information by using this way of publishing FIFA listed officials. If they were already on FIFA list before, original information about them appears. And let me say, very uncomfortable site.

IFFHS RANKING 2023
ReplyDelete1. Marciniak
2. Orsato
3. Turpin
4. Oliver
5. Taylor
6. Letexier
7. Makkelie
8. Roldan
9. Gil Manzano
10. Zwayer
While men's list is fully reasonable, IFFHS shows again the "competence" by awarding Frappart with the first place for women... well..they don't even mention why but they report indeed that Penso was the referee for Women's WC final. I could have accepted that in case of good performances by the French, but we wll remember her Women's WC.
Deletehttps://iffhs.com/posts/3294
In my opinion Lady Penso is stronger than the French, moreover, athletically it is not even comparable
DeleteOliver and Taylor better than Makkelie? Letexier better than Gil Manzano? Not so sure. Also, only one non european ref?
DeleteLetexier is highly regarded by the UEFA committee, personally I prefer Jérémie Pignard. The ranking is meaningless to me, of the Europeans Nyberg is missing, if there is Letexier there must be Nyberg. The presence of so many Europeans is due to the lack of South Americans. Rapallini could be there after Nestor's retirement.

DeleteQuestion:
ReplyDeleteReferee played advantage after a clear DOGSO from goalkeeper outside penalty area. Ball went to the attackers teammate in front of an empty goal. He missed it!
Should/Could VAR recommend an OFR or no?
Where does it say in the protocol?
If the advantage is played and clearly visible by referee, then VAR shouldn't intervene because an assessment has been made regarding that foul. Even more because after advantage with DOGSO scenario outside the box in all cases a YC must follow, so the evaluation then concludes with that decision, in case.
Delete"Clever" (?) refereeing would suggest (but I'm not here to invite you to do that...) to wait the end of action without making any gesture, so in case of missed goal, going back to the infringment would be allowed and accepted by fans.
FA Cup, Palace v Everton, Kavanagh (VAR: Pawson). 79' Interesting RC after OFR for SFP. I'm very confident this would not have been given a month ago in England, and it's only because many examples over two matchweeks last month, with YCs being assessed as incorrect on tackles with raised studs, has this stricter line been taken. I expect this will be deemed an incorrect review and RC (by FA standards at least). Otherwise it marks a shift in how these tackles are assessed in England
ReplyDeleteRidiculously bad VAR intervention from Craig Pawson. No force at all in the challenge, certainly not a clear and obvious error especially how the referee was 5 yards away and didn't even give a foul.
Deletehttps://streamff.co/v/0IWVf4_5Y-
DeleteHere the OFR. I think that thank to replays shown, we understand why VAR called referee (point of contact and studs up). These criteria fulfill the serious foul play, while one can discuss about the intensity. I praise this intervention, but knowing Premier League style of officiating, I think this wont be accepted.
Also, I'm not convinced by Kavanagh, I don't understand why so long time, once seen the incident, and the red card showing procedure is definitely poor, in my opinion. I don't see a strong body language but rather a lost referee after having checked the incident at monitor.
@Chefren
DeleteEverton have successfully appealed the red card, the ban has been rescinded.
Which is what I'm sure most thought would happen and almost all in England would deem the right outcome

DeleteOT: Rosetti was at the german referees trainings camp.
ReplyDeletehttps://fb.watch/pqDXXl7nRu/?mibextid=Nif5oz
They discussed more than an hour about handball, Rosetti said. Well, I can fully understand why, but let me say with only one lesson, it is simply impossible that he has changed the German minds about handballs. They have, as well as England, totally different ideas, and I think consistency is simply impossible. So, just circumstance words by Rosetti... even more impossible because we know that already inside UEFA we have the VAR "Elite" pool and then all the other VARs from different countries appointed in certain games, that decide about handballs according to their ideas. So I don't think there will be any result, this lesson with Rosetti was just sharing experience, but surely not for changing minds.

Orsato missing it, it looks to me he didn't strive too much for watching this incident.
His last domestic OFR was in February last year (Bologna-Inter, offside interference)
DeleteIs it normal for AR to run to the halfway line? Isn't the 4th official enough to control benches? Who controls the players on the pitch during OFR in this case?

DeleteMariani to Copa America and Guida nothing (if Massa and Orsato to Euro)?
DeletePinheiro would make sense, but I don't see the point of having Mariani there. Already 42 this year, snubbed in favour of Guida of promotion, it certainly wouldn't be to gain any form of experience
Delete@GO_REF Can you publish the whole list of the attendees at pre-season training camp for Conmebol referees, which takes place between this Wednesday and next Saturday in Paraguay ? Due to Rapallini and Sampaio's retirement I'm very interested to know on which men COMNEBOL is putting focus for next Olympics games and FIFA WC2026.
Delete@f Wilton Sampaio is still on the FIFA list, it was just his younger brother Savio who retired and he wasn't really a candidate for anything. Argentina still have Facundo Tello and Darío Herrera.

Missed atleast YC for Paredes.
DeleteWhat was the red card for Azmoun for? The slap only happens after he has received a red card?
DeleteIn addition, I cannot see a Roma match in which Mancini doesn't misbehave several times. Good that Orsato is doing something about this
Yep but he gave him RC when the match was over.
DeleteHe was doing his usual behaviour for whole match and did not stop for a second.
Generally,Orsato led this game with his name,he is too big of a name to let thing get away so he allowed too much maybe and was not his usual self.
Therefore, missed penalty that for him is big mistake, missed couple of YC's and we can see that his age and injury took away his athletic ability.
Can you share the names of the referees who are officiating the Spanish Super cup in Asia ? @Chefren any prediction for the ones of Italian supercup next week ?

And Rojas was his usual self this match.
DeleteTotal match control, surprised that match did not escalate but both teams were focused on playing football rather than injuring players.
Match control-great.
Disciplinary control-awful.
Missed atleast 2 clear YC's(Carvajal and Morata).
No matter the score,Morata with his obvious SPA and Carvajal with his persistent fouling deserved to be caution.
And it's not just that, you can see in his style that he doesn't want to book players like his life depends on it,just like Doveri.
He is very lucky that both teams behavedlike it was friendly match.
If there was someone like Ramos,Godin or Raul .Garcia he would be in huge problems.
But Madrid derbies are not that feisty and dirty anymore, just like El Clasico.

A tricky offside incident that occured in the Celta de Vigo v Real Betis game last week. Celta player was deemed offside by AR1 but he wasn't. The ball was not played by him but by Betis player. Then, the ball reached another Celta player who was in an offside position at the moment of the initial pass. VAR had hard time to decide: deliberate play by defender or not? Of course, it was deliberate but rather not according to current interpretation. Fortunately for all (beside Celta), the defender was kicked and therefore the goal was disallowed for that offence. Otherwise, it would've been a big discussion about the current interpretation, I think.
ReplyDeletehttps://we.tl/t-3XI0KStyBL
I think that in the spirit of the game yu can consider the action by defender, that is surely deliberate, as a save, so even if deliberate action, still offside after that. Going for deliberate play and then allowing the goal would have been indded impossible to accept, good that extra stuff happned to make then a certain assessment here!
DeleteYoshimi Yamashita delivered another good performance at AFC Asian Cup in AUSIND. Correctly assessed key match incidents, the only YC for reckless step on foot by 24IND in 90+4'. Perhaps it could've been issued two minutes earlier for a reckless challenge by 5IND as rising frustration of India players was visible for some minutes but nothing more than that.

The game was more challenging than the first two easy-going clashes. I think the offside call is correct but maybe not every VAR would've called the referee. Al-Huwaish was well respected throughout. All cards correct but not cautioning 5CHN for three late SPA-like offences was poor (6', 31', 67'). Maybe too much tolerance for DtR by Chinese late in the game. Good performance.

Deletehttps://www.streambug.io/cv/400e6a
Fully correct decision and impossible from the field. Keeper has reduced space to make his movement with player in offside making even contact with him, nothing to add. That's excellent presentation for using VAR in difficult cases!
DeleteSmall review of the AFCON opening game (Ivory Coast vs. Guinea-Bissau) handled by Mohamed Amin Omar. Overall it was a good performance by the Egyptian imo.

DeleteSome remarks.
Great advantage in 29', most of referees, hurry to issue YC for that challenge, would have stopped game!
41'is a good NO PENALTY decision for me, even more in real pace, I don't have the perception of a foul by defender. A tricky situation in which a penalty call would have been wrong.
The rest of cards, fully correct decisions for me...
Brilliant Performance by Egyptian, Totally acceptable by the players, Very Athletic referee .. BRAVO

41' - PAI UZB: pushing; one can deem it as foul but not clear and obvious for VAR to get involved

Alertness and prevention were key to keep control in this hot clash with both teams playing in a physical and often provocative manner (especially Syria as we know them). Al-Kaf was a very good choice for this game and he delivered a very good performance. He didn't shot out his munition after studs-up challenge by 5UZB (5'), studs-up tackle by 21SYR (8') and provocation by 24SYR (22'). Instead, a rather soft YC to 25SYR for impeding was issued for management purpose (31'). The second half was calmer in general: mandatory YC to 25UZB for reckless tackle was shown in 54'. On several occasions, Syria players exuberantly protested Al-Kaf's calls or provoked conflicts with opponents but the referee was very alert to such type of behaviours and maintained confident and calm while warning the players.

62' - PAI UAE: tripping; penalty could be given but most likely referee and VAR assessed the attacking player created the contact
72' - [OFR] PAI UAE: tackle - no penalty call confirmed after OFR; the referee again assessed that the attacking player looked for penalty but given the images presented by VAR it's difficult to explain why penalty was not awarded at the end...
90+1' - No card 9HKG after high leg challenge; at least YC should've been issued but also a strong case for SFP
90+2' - [OFR] Penalty awarded to UAE for kicking; AR1 should be able to help in real time

90+14' - PAI HKG: pushing/charging; not enough for penalty
A very challenging game for Muhammad Taqi Aljaafari bin Jahari. Many key match incidents to assess for him but at the end and unconvincing impression as almost every big call had to be made with VAR involvement.
Here are the four interventions in this game:
Delete1) https://www.streambug.io/cv/864d16
2) https://www.streambug.io/cv/1d92bf
3) https://www.streambug.io/cv/12a82e
4) https://www.streambug.io/cv/f98a88
What a poor officiating, definitely! I expected more from the Singapore referee. Quite shocked about some decisions but more important than that, missed alertness. I think you can't blame him only regarding last OFR, difficult to see the control by arm and correct VAR intervention, but the previous three incidents... ohh!
DeleteFirst OFR: referee totally unaware, missed incident, no reaction at all, too long time at monitor (my opinion of course).
Second OFR: OK you don't give penalty for keeper late attempt, this one was at referee's discretion and I agree not a clear one, but the second, definitely a clear penalty. Incredible to play on after having rewatched it, I think his argument here was that attacker was already falling down due to his movement, when he got the contact by defender's tackle. True, but this doesn't change reality, that's absolutely perceived as very clear penalty, if you ask me, by all people. This is sophisticated officiating, making a second assessment when you have already in front of your eyes the easy and correct solution... no need to go frame by frame here.
Third OFR: sorry to say and I didn't want to use such harsh words, but an AR who doesn't see that so close, must be removed from a so big tournament, I can't find explanation, extremely low level of refereeing.
Interesting caveat of the OFR conducted to disallow a goal for active offside in Ghana vs. Cape Verde is that you can hear what Jean-Jacques Ndala was saying to VAR Mustapha Ghorbal in the review area. The correct decision was reached after the intervention; offside, no goal. To be honest, between Ndala and the (WC-)experienced linesman Noupué this should have been solved without the need for VAR, and one would guess that more blame would be with the referee here.
ReplyDeleteClip:
https://www.streambug.io/cv/e930a1
No way you can blame the referee here. The job of detecting an offside play is for the assistant. I can't understand how you are putting this on the referee
DeleteIt is interesting to hear referee, I'm not sure I got exactly what he said a few before the end of OFR? He was convinced keeper would have had time to see the ball.
DeleteAbout the situation, my opinion is that, even if the attacker is exactly right in front of keeper (camera is very clear), I would argue about this call. I know there is a certain tolerance when the shot is from very far away and there is considerable space between the keeper and the attacker. OK, ball was hidden at the moment of the shot, but this is not a very black or white situation, if you ask me. Enormous free space could lead us to further considerations, nevertheless, I still think it is difficult for both referee and the officials on the pitch to see that. Extremely hard for AR because attacker is not close to keeper, as I said, and for this reason, he can't detect exactly that he is right in front, the point of view of referee would have been more suitable for field assessment in this case, but still not easy.

10' - YC 15PLE for reckless kick; the force is very high and the kick not so close to the ball, difficult to assess if intentional or not but something one can discuss about
22' - PAI IRN holding; stupid by defender no impact on the attacking player
39' - Missed 2YC 15PLE for (at least) reckless step on heel
67' - PAI IRN: pushing; not enough or even nothing there
68' - PAI PLE: pushing/holding; no replay
71' - PAI IRN: handball; the arm is rather close to the body but a replay showing a real impact on the shot is missing
80' - YC 2PLE for reckless step on heel; decision most likely came after VAR advice; again it's something more than YC but maybe not 100% RC for everyone
90+2' - [OFR] RC 5PLE for DOGSO downgraded to YC for SPA after OFR; I agree with VAR interpretation but also understandable initial decision by Al-Jassim - making a 'screenshot' at the moment of the offence pointed to DOGSO but the direction the ball was played by the attacking player made defender being able to intervene
Challenging game for Al-Jassim. Palestine players did everything to make the game a hard time for their opponents. All cautions were mandatory and overall dealing with PLE rough way of play was decent but two-three more YCs could/should have been issued (31' - reckless kick by 10PLE, 39' - (at least) reckless step on heel by already cautioned 15PLE, 81' - studs up challenge by 6PLE). Although the Qatari had two key match errors, they didn't impact the result and I don't think it's enough to refuse this performance given that overall he was good in a challenging scenario.
KORBHR
ReplyDeleteKMIs
34', 49' - Possible 2YCs 2KOR; after being cautioned in 28' for SPA, the player committed further two SPA-like fouls; while the holding in 34' is still no clear SPA, the second offence is more problematic but maybe also the caution was not 100% mandatory
36' - PAI KOR: holding; no conclusive replay
38' - Possible 2YC 5KOR for reckless use of arm; quite accidental but also with a strong elbow contact with an opponent's head.
68' - Goal KOR; VAR had to determine whether the ball crossed the touchline before - no replays were shown
90+4' - PAI KOR: YC 7KOR for simulation; great call!
Challenging game for Ma Ning given that both teams were not afraid of committing cautionable offences. However, disciplinary control was not consistent at all. While all cards issued were mandatory, there were several other cases when caution (or at least strong reaction) was missing, the most obvious being: 13' - mobbing by 7BHR, 46' - reckless cynical kick by 4BHR, 84' - charging against face, 90+5' - reckless step on foot by 6BHR, 90+7' - SPA by 16KOR. The same could be said about technical accuracy: some good spots but also some astonishing misses. The most important thing is that the Chinese has no feeling when to jump in / stamp his authority / use stronger action and therefore really lacks in alertness and prevention. Surely too chaotic and shaky impression for refereeing analysts but perhaps nothing too big to catch general attention.

It seems a technical mistake from Shuan Evans in Saudi Arabia-Oman. Despite the fact that the last score of Saudi was regular, he cancelled it after VAR review, re started the game and interrupted it again to validate the score. What happened ? How do you comment it ?
ReplyDeleteI think he just made a mess by bad choice of gestures after OFR. He decided to show an IDFK sign for offside, then denying gesture to communicate there was no offside and pointed to the middle signalling a goal. Players interpreted this all as offside decision being confirmed.
DeleteVideo:
Deletehttps://streamable.com/hit0i5
Indeed it was like Euro Soccer Referee explained.
Unnecessary gesture by Australian referee, he made the offside gesture then adding "no" after that, like when you rescind or change a RC/ YC after OFR. This was never seen before and can just create confusion, he should have only indicated the goal after the intervention. Maybe in Australian league they use to make gestures in this way when they change an offside decision.
Also, clear the reason why AR2 made a mistake, too late in reacting after corner kick and contrary movement when having to make decisive assessment.
IDNIRQ
ReplyDeleteKMIs
45+7' - Goal IRQ; VAR had to determine whether one of the attacking players touched the ball passed the ball centred into the penalty area in the APP - such touch would result in an offside offence; goal allowed, no touch detected
50' - Goal IRQ disallowed for offside (AR2); good spot!
The game didn't bring many challenges for the Uzbeki crew. Tantashev made a good start with an early caution for clear SPA in 2' but then turned his usual lenient mode on. A pity he didn't react stronger to one of IDN fouls between 62' and 65' (all three offences could/should have led to a player being cautioned - 7IDN for reckless stamp (62'), 8IDN for reckless cynical tackle (64') and 2IDN for scratch against heel from behind (65')). In 72', huge blackout in cooperation between AR2 and Ref - offside signalled after corner kick and play by defending player. Two frustration fouls by IDN players during the added time resulted in mandatory YC to 23IDN for reckless tackle (90+5') and no sanction to 15IDN for cynical/reckless challenge (90+7'). Whenever I see Tantashev his biggest goal is to make the game flow sacrificing disciplinary control. Similarly to Ma Ning - not my cup of tea.
Anyone saw QAT's first goal in TJKQAT? What's your opinion about referee's position?
ReplyDeleteVery eventful game for Kimura/Iida, besides the incident of Qatari 1st goal:
Delete1) 33' OFR for a potential PK for Qatar. Final decision was defensive FK for Tajikistan for previous holding by Qatari attacker, but also a YC to TJK5 for illegal use of arms.
2) 45' YC for QAT20 for a reckless challenge. Quite hard tackle, borderline RC, no VAR intervention.
3) 81' RC for TJK13 for VC after OFR. Kicked an opponent in the face while on the ground after being fouled.
MASJOR
ReplyDeleteKMIs
10' - PAI MAS: potential YC 12MAS for simulation
12' - Goal JOR: possible foul in APP; no replay
13' - [OFR] Offside call by AR2 changed to penalty in favour of JOR; contrary movements but avoidable mistake at this level, the following tripping was clear
25' - [VAR] Goal JOR disallowed for offside after VAR intervention; this time absolutely no blame on AR2 as the offside was marginal
Quite easy game for the Muhammad Abdullah Hassan Muhammad but he also contributed to the friendly game character by some unofficial talks, smiles, etc. Surely one of the best (if not THE best) AFC referee regarding personality, approach and game feeling. Disciplinary control was lenient but at the same time the no-card decisions were supportable - he knew well when to jump in with a card for too reckless tackle of 21JOR in 45+1'.
On the other hand, a very challenging game for assistant referees, especially the AR2. Many good spots, one avoidable mistake at KMI (see above) and some tight calls that could be called into question (4', 88' x2).
THAKGZ
ReplyDeleteKMIs
14' - Goal THA disallowed for offside (AR1)
21' - PAI KGZ: YC 10KGZ for trying to win a penalty; although there is a contact, everything is created by the attacking player - great call!
90+2' - PAI KGZ: handball; ball played from a long distance but an opponent jumping in front of the player made it quite unexpected; position of the arm was natural; correct play-on
Adham Makhadmah's presence and attitude could be described with a short term: tough guy. Early YC for reckless use of arm (correct but I can imagine most referees would've only warned a player in this phase) no soft free kicks and many preventative warnings issued in a very strict and serious manner made players unwilling to undermine the Jordanian's calls. The game didn't offer many disciplinary challenges but Makhadmah knew well when to jump in with cautions in the last 10 minutes of the game. Good performance!
Can you kindly share the pre-list match officials you mentioned ? as well the final list of the selected referees ?
ReplyDeleteRisķullaev got injured just before the tournament and the Tajik was consequently promoted from reservist to replace him (thanks to HowardMaxi for this info!). Indeed it is rather poor form to basically repeat the same referees for the two Indonesia games and seems a bit like a ‘lack of respect’ towards them. In terms of EUROs, this ‘exact’ situation happened in 1992 and Jol/Melo Pereira refereed the same team two games in a row at 2000 but Nielsen’s injury and the necessary reshuffling limited the options a bit back then.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the list Juan

KSAOMA
ReplyDeleteKMIs
10' - [OFR] Penalty in favour of OMA awarded after an OFR; missed an accidental off-the-ball step on foot/ankle from behind with no impact on play wouldn't be enough to call the referee in many countries but on the other hand it would be difficult to explain the no call having a clear image of step on foot; big controversy but I understand VAR and referee choosing the easier call (you can't deny the images)
45+7' - PAI KSA: GK's intervention; GK goes for the ball and kicks the attacking player with his knee in the back, even before catching the ball; I think it's a blatant penalty to be spotted by VAR and I don't understand no intervention here, tbh...
90+6' - [VAR] Goal KSA, initially disallowed for offside, allowed after VAR intervention - no offside; huge mistake by AR2 here, shouldn't happen at any level; in addition, huge mess caused by unfortunate choice of gestures after VAR intervention - instead of simply pointing to the middle signalling a goal, the IDFK gesture was followed by "no" gesture and only then the referee pointed to the middle - confused OMA players restarted the game from an IDFK...
One of the poorest performances of the tournament. Shaun Evans is a perspective AFC referee with imposing physique and a very talkative style but his authority among players was rather low and managerial skills to be improved - you simply shouldn't accept some things. Already in the first half, after some play-on calls (24' - illegal use of arm by 12KSA, 36' - reckless kick by 24KSA, hectic impression during the added time) he lost the plot a little bit. To not caution (or even have a strong word) blatant dissents by 12KSA (hand gesture) and 20KSA (arguing with and putting a palm on AR2's chest) in 45+6' and 65' respectively was really poor. You can't blame the referee for the (no) penalty call in 10' but the way of handling the game and no-penalty call in 45+7' left a lot to be desired and the goal/no-goal confusion just topped it off. AR2 left a bad impression with that last-minute offside call as well.
Hi Euro Soccer Ref,
DeleteFirst of all, let me start by saying that one of the reasons why I check in everyday is to read your reports. So thank you for that! I’m sure I’m not the only one.
I usually agree with most of what you write, like with your assessment in the 10’ incident.
However, after watching the incident at 45+7’ I was surprised that I even had to read your report again to check that I’m not mistaken.
This is never a penalty, I would go as far as saying it would’ve been a ‘scandalous’ penalty if given either by the referee or VAR.
IMO the goalkeeper jumped 'normally' without any extra movement, I understand that his knee was as in front but that is how they jump and it was completely normal. No one protested and no one was expecting anything from both teams. It would’ve been a decision that is definitely not what ‘football expects’.
Regarding 90+6’, I absolutely cannot understand why he chose to signal that way! I hope they don’t do that in Australia. Actually I’m sure they don’t as it is very deceiving to mostly eveyone! Of course for referee’s watching, we can understand but for anyone else, no way!
Maybe he wanted to make it like his ‘trademark’ way of signaling but I’m sure he regrets it now and will never do it again.
Thank you for the very informative feedbacks again! I look forward to read the rest of your reports.
Thanks for appreciation! About the GK's challenge, I just think that - despite the natural character of the challenge - the careless / reckless contact cannot be denied and therefore I expect a penalty. As well as I would've expected it for illegal use of arm, etc. I don't think that it's necessary to allow GKs ignoring the safety of their opponents as far as they challenges for the ball. But it's the beauty of football that we can have different opinions, isn't it? :)
DeleteLBNCHN
ReplyDeleteKMIs
14' - Potential RC 13LBN for SFP. Shortly after an offside offence, 13LBN challenges the ball with a high boot and by follow-through movement puts studs on the opponent's face. Of course, you could argue he was interested in playing the ball and successfully did it, maybe he even tried to avoid the contact with an opponent BUT he performs such a dangerous challenge in front of his opponent, he has to be aware of his presence, therefore the challenge fulfill criteria for reckless and, as it also endangers the safety of an opponent, it should be punished with a straight RC, imo. I would expect a VAR intervention for SFP here.
Poor impression by Ko Hyung-jin in a rough game. Totally isolated figure, not interested in managing players, many doubtful play-on calls and underpunished challenges. To not give a YC is one thing (although some players should've been cautioned in 28', 33', 45+3', 59', 77') but to not feel the need of at least strongly warning the players after some bad challenges is something different. In some cases, you could get the impression that the referee was totally confused about what happened - 23' two rough challenges from both sides, 72' allowing a CHN player to continue action despite of clear injury of the LBN GK, 83' doubtful play-on calls followed by confusion who should get the throw-in + several not detected clear offences. The Korean could be happy that the players behaved well in general and his weak foul detection / management didn't result in a big mess.
TJKQAT
ReplyDeleteKMIs
17' - Goal QAT: possible foul in APP; bad positioning by the referee but no foul there
31' - [OFR] PAI QAT and potential RC 5TJK: off-the-ball striking. After OFR, the referee decided to award a defensive FK and sanction 5TJK with a YC. Smart refereeing here, I would say, but one could argue that a deliberate striking in the head should've resulted in a RC being given.
45+1' - Potential RC 20QAT for SFP tackle, only YC given; the YC decision could be supported but I would opt for a RC here as the tackle is out of control, the force is high and the hitting point very borderline
62' - Possible 2YC 20QAT for SPA; could've been given but not 100% mandatory
63' - Potential SPA/DOGSO handball by 2TJK but replays showed the ball hit the player's thigh and not the arm, good play-on call
77' - [OFR] After being brought down by 4QAT, 13TJK retaliates while lying on the ground with a strong kicking movement that hit the nearly positioned 25QAT in the chest; perhaps a YC issued by the referee would've been enough if not the extra movement towards the opponent's face making a studs contact with his jaw. VAR had no choice here than to call the referee for an OFR and 13TJK was rightly sent off.
Hiroyuki Kimura chose a lenient disciplinary line that not necessarily suited this hot game. In my opinion, some early YCs combined with stronger body language could've calmed down the players a little bit. But it wasn't the case. Lack of stronger action against early SPA holding offences by 5QAT in 1' and 2TJK in 6', late tripping by 5TJK in 22', wild tackle by 9TJK in 26' followed by only-YC for the above mentioned striking by 5TJK in 31', no reaction against interfering with GK in 39', only-YC for the above mentioned tackle by 20QAT in 45+1', only a warning after three cynical fouls by 17TJK in 52', 54' and 58', no YC for stamp by 6TJK in 61' led to a bad atmosphere between players and many 'agricultural' (as Mikael often describes it) challenges. The Japanese improved his body language a little bit in the second half but in general it was too weak, especially for such kind of game.
SYRAUS
ReplyDeleteKMIs
04' - PAI AUS: handball; arm by the side of the body, correct play-on
09' - PAI AUS: handball; no handball at all
73' - PAI AUS: challenge; no replay shown
Adil An-Naqbi risked much using a laidback and lenient approach in a game involving Syria - one of the roughest teams at the tournament - but Australians helped him by... playing quite rough. Quite funny to see how Syrians respected Australians after they saw their opponents are going to play in the same manner. The two cautions were shown to Australia players (sic!) for reckless use of arm (27') and reckless kick (85') - both mandatory. Some cynical fouls went unpunished but the only mandatory missed YC was the reckless challenge by 21SYR in 25' - a good warning followed though. The holding by 2SYR in 61' could've been cautioned as well. Overall, a good performance by another British-style Emirati. Both Probert and Bennett really influenced the refereeing in UAE :)
INDUZB
ReplyDeleteKMIs
58' - PAI UZB: impeding; well, if not the second defender directly involved in play, the action of 5IND was really silly but it didn't impede the attacking player -> correct play-on
Fu Ming chose a very lenient approach, not issuing a single YC. We can live with it given the game was played in a friendly atmosphere and was not challenging at all. I just wonder whether the Chinese didn't see the stamping offences properly or assessed them as not mandatory cautions (47', 89', 90'). There were some DtRs ignored by the referee as well (2', 20', 65'). I very much liked the instant reaction against the cynical late challenge by 25IND in 85' - well played! The same player should've been cautioned after another deliberate foul in 90+3' - this time Fu Ming decided to take the advantage away from Uzbekistan and warn him again, not risking any escalation. One can question the leniency but I liked the alertness and prevention in key moments of the game. Good performance, especially regarding management.
PLEUAE
ReplyDeleteKMIs
26' - PAI PLE: handball; no replay shown
34' - [OFR] After the initial play-on call, VAR calls the referee for an OFR and a penalty is awarded in favour of PLE for holding and 12UAE red-carded for DOGSO-no attempt. The referee's view was blocked at the moment of this quite blatant offence but at the end the correct decision (also disciplinary) was reached.
50' - PAI PLE: handball (no replay) and shortly afterwards Goal PLE; UAE players tried to convince the referee one of them was fouled but nothing illegal by PLE player there.
72' - PAI PLE: tackle; trailing leg tackle and quite long VAR check but (you know my strict approach regarding such tackles) I think that by no intervening the VAR got it right as the speed of play and force of the challenge was low and it didn't severely impact the PLE player('s well-being).
75' - Too early goal-kick decision after signalisation of offside by AR2 therefore Goal PLE is scored after the whistle was blown by the referee; rather correct decision by AR2 but you have to delay the whistle in such cases.
Ahmad Al-Ali is a serious-looking referee with a distant approach towards players. He needed too much time to reach some decisions hence sometimes he appeared too hesitant (29', 31'). (Too) lenient disciplinary as late challenges (31', 46') and holding (45') should've been cautioned or at least very strong warnings should've followed. Nothing very important as the game, although tight, wasn't overly challenging but I wasn't convinced by Kuwaiti's skills.
HKGIRN
ReplyDeleteKMIs
90+1' - Possible RC 1IRN for DOGSO. Iranian GK plays the ball with his right hand denying HKG a very dangerous action. The big question is whether it's DOGSO or SPA? Due to close presence of 15IRN, who runs shoulder to shoulder with 25HKG, it's still SPA, imo. Therefore, no VAR intervention seems OK but surely a huge miss by the referee although, to be fair, it was very hard to spot as the goalkeeper's action was very clever.
90+7' - PAI HKG: holding. A very borderline incident. 15IRN one-sidedly pulls the 25HKG's shirt in a very decisive moment when he is turning around towards the goal. We are unable to assess the possible offside position of 25HKG. In general, I wouldn't have nothing against penalty being awarded here but perhaps not 100% mandatory VAR intervention.
The young Syrian Hanna Hattab faced a normal game with two difficult-to-assess key match incidents. Unfortunately, he looked frightened and nervous, trying to compensate bad calls with excessive talking. He started with a missed blatant undermining (1') and phantom FK (3'). Possible YCs for interfering with GK (4') and holding (33') were managed without cards, correct YC for SPA tackle followed (37'). Very late decision to caution 4HKG for step on foot in 46' and missed YC to 7IRN for even more serious same-type offence in 51'. To not caution 8HKG for reckless tackle in 57' was insane - talking is not enough in such cases. Afterwards, many theatrical warnings for time wasting, set piece holding/pushing and dissents. I think with his style involving nice talking and gesturing skills Hanna Hattab may achieve something in the future BUT he needs to improve his calls.
IRQJPN
ReplyDeleteKMIs
05' - Goal IRQ; long VAR check regarding possible offside-interfering by 7IRQ; although there is an offside position, the Iraqi did nothing to make it an offside offence - goal correctly allowed
15', 30', 45+1', 45+4' - Possible 2YC 4IRQ; after being cautioned for SPA impeding in 15', the Iraqi exuberantly protested against the referee's decision in 30', committed a follow-through kick in 45+1' and off-the-ball tripping in 45+4' - he could be happy he was allowed to stay on the pitch given his attitude
45+4' - Goal IRQ; VAR checking whether the ball left the field of play in APP - it didn't, so the goal stood
54' - PAI IRQ: holding, tackle, kick; very tricky incident - at first we have holding by 2JPN that starts outside but continues inside the penalty area - we could end the analysis here: penalty and red card to be issued; most likely VAR focused only on tackle by 2JPN and kick by GK JPN - both actions somehow failed as the ball was not played but given the attacker already lost his balance, one can understand the 'no-offence' call by VAR, however the initial holding shouldn't have been ignored, imo
56' - [OFR] Penalty awarded in favour of JPN, canceled after OFR; well, by deduction we can be almost sure the defender's left leg touched the attacking player's right leg what caused him stumbling - to call the referee to the monitor and question the penalty by showing such inconclusive images is really, really poor by VAR, maybe a compensation for the previous doubtful call?
73' - PAI JPN: kicking; 8JPN puts his leg in front of 20IRQ and the contact occurs; as the ball was moving towards both players, a penalty wouldn't have been a mistake as the move by Japanese player should be assessed as fair 'shielding the ball' (I know Mikael is against such interpretations but...)
Khalid At-Turais with his serious and professional look gave rather good impression in the first half, although he was lenient in dealing with 4IRQ, as pointed above. He was rather distant to players but reading the game quite well. The penalty incidents (and poor work of VAR) in the second half made him losing focus at the end, with 86', 87' and 90+4' challenges not cautioned. Surely one to follow but I'm not sure about his future at this tournament.
VIEIDN
ReplyDeleteKMIs
39' - Penalty awarded in favour of IDN for shirt pulling; offence that maybe had no significant impact but was soooo blatant that couldn't be ignored by the referee
90+1' - 2YC 25VIE after a late tackle; acceptable call both due to SPA and reckless but given the lenient approach of the referee and that 7IDN just kicked the ball away to win this FK (see the player's left leg trailing even before being hit) I would be more than happy to see no 2YC being issued
Weak performance of Gulmurod Sadullo. The Tajik referee showed significant lacks in his skills:
- very central positioning, often too far from action and not being able to adjust position when close to play (5', 45+4')
- too late reaction to potential head injury (66')
- keeping both eyes closed to blatant DtR tactics by IDN players (kicking the ball away in 8', 45+3', 63', 90' (to warn a player here is a joke...) and interfering with a quick FK execution in 46', 76', 90+3', 90+6' (AR1 forced to manage the scene...))
- too lenient disciplinary line: warning to 25IDN after off-the-ball impeding (9') and saving the same player again in 31' after very late cynical tripping (31'), 51' and 60'; in addition, bad tackle by 24VIE (10'), off-the-ball impeding by 7VIE (61'), missed reckless use of arm by 24VIE (66', 4OF at fault), missed illegal use of arm by 9VIE (85') - all without YC
Bad times of WC2014 still alive in AFC. :/
Thank you so much once again for this outstanding work!
DeleteHere the clips of major incidents in this game:
39' - Penalty https://streamable.com/7bouvk
90'+1 - Second YC https://streamable.com/52l7jd
Well, at the end you can say that referee got right the two crucial incidents, so maybe for AFC (like 2014 WC FIFA times) this will be enough if not even very good!
About the penalty, for me simply impossible to ignore and a certain point you must whistle. About the second YC, fully agree with you as well, but just looking at the incident we have to say correct card for the tackle on the man. Nevertheless, the action of attacker, kicking exactly ball in that moment is something extra ordinary in terms of "cleverness" (for him, of course)... because I think defender could have reached ball.
The bad part, about disciplinary and so on, will follow later with some further clips of the incidents you mentioned!

JORKOR
ReplyDeleteKMIs
04' - [OFR] Penalty awarded in favour of KOR and YC 23JOR for DOGSO-attempt after OFR; 23JOR doesn't reach the ball with his tackle and his trailing leg causes a careless contact with an opponent's foot - not so clear in real time but very good VAR intervention and the final outcome; one could discuss about the need of caution though
45+5' - PAI JOR: holding; slight shirt pulling by 4KOR running side-by-side with the attacking player who tries to use it already when realised that there is no chance to score - correct play-on call
How different Salman Ahmad Fallahi is compared to most of other Asian referees at this tournament. And it's a very positive difference! UEFA style: very focused, always trying to control everything, making assessment of every single incident, able to efficiently connect with players, cool-headed. Unfortunately, some mistakes happened: two fouls rather wrongly assessed as reckless studs-up challenges (17', 90+5'), dissent by action by 22KOR after rather wrong FK should've been cautioned (77'), missed two corner kicks to KOR (42', 54'). On the other hand, one should highlight the ability to not react instantly to assistant's signal for offside - excellent delaying whistle in 64'(!) and very good advantage in 71'. Imo, the 33yo Qatari is surely one to watch!
BHRMAS
ReplyDeleteKMIs
31' - PAI BHR: tripping; 21MAS doesn't manage to kick the ball and therefore clearly puts his leg in front of 10BHR - the contact is not so strong and the Bahraini even manages to make one more step before falling down; I think either call should be supported by VAR
54' - PAI MAS: handball; no punishable handball as the ball is played from a very short distance, bounces off the defending player's foot and hits him in the naturally positioned arm given his movement
Ahmad Al-Kaf delivered another strong performance at this tournament. As in his first game, he offered a stepped disciplinary approach, spending a warning for an SPA-like offence in 2' and then issuing mandatory cautions. On the negative side: two possible YCs missed: 5' - play-on after SPA-pushing by 3BHR, 44' - play-on after SPA-like tackle by 6BHR (difficult to spot), some annoying soft FKs, lack of reaction against DtR (10') and too late reaction for potential head injury (57'). A different style of refereeing comparing to most of AFC referees who prefer to ignore some incidents to make the game faster. Al-Kaf wants to have everything under control and often slows the game down to prevent escalations and bad fouls. Another game to follow

77' - Play-on after potential DOGSO handball by 16OMA; no DOGSO as the ball bounced off the 'legal' parts of the body at first (maybe indeed even no offence due to that) but anyway interesting case whether with such deliberate blocking action we should still consider 'supporting arm'
85' - PAI OMA: kicking; no offence as the attacking player deliberately puts his leg in front of the opponent and the contact is negligible
88' - PAI OMA: handball; no replay but even if there is a handball, the ball was deliberately played by THA player to his arm, so no offence
Mu'ud Bonyadifard offered a very high technical accuracy with almost all calls being correct isolatedly. However, although elegant and professional, a very isolated impression. Something more should be done with too many cynical fouls by THA players - although no crystal clear yellow cards missed, to just whistle fouls was not enough in some cases and it led to frustration of some Omani players. Especially, 7THA was a trouble-maker committing many fouls through the game. Again at this tournament, we didn't see a strong reaction against DtR (18'), dissenting behaviour (35') and cynical interfering with GK (45'). To allow the flying tackle on the ball in 90', close to 4OF, was also suboptimal (another missed obvious foul close to Faghani in 19'). In general, a good performance but some points to consider for further development.
