With thanks to Euro Soccer Ref.
Tough job for Stieler in one of the hottest match of the day
ReplyDeleteHard to say, whether that is more a last chance to shine or a sacrifice of a non-EURO referee...
DeleteIndeed that's the most interesting appointments of this set.
DeleteIt is the first time, in my opinion, that we can read a possible call to EURO, based on the assignment. Nevertheless, this is the only game in which he will be challenged so far, and there isn't a committee member. It doesn't sounds like a real exam for EURO, but at the same time, I wouldn't have expected him here. Maybe a middle way to justify his call as fourth official? We will see, in all cases very important game.
The redemption ark for Gil Manzano starts now?! A good performance would help him a lot. Huge game for Stieler, I was expecting a top Elite for that game but still Inthink that it is unlikely for him to be main referee at Euro. It is an ok game for Kruzliak but certainly he deserved more. However he has an important observer and this is a good sign. Massa will also have a difficult game, it was expected to see him appointed as the Com probably has not decided yet who will be the 2nd Italian at Euro
ReplyDeleteRegular assignments for Massa and Kruzliak, but one could have expected both in Europa League rather than Conference. Nevertheless, both could handle a EL semifinal after that (if possible for Massa with Italian teams).
ReplyDeleteAbout Gil Manzano, we should reflect looking at first leg choice, Grinfeeld, and this should explain. He got this game just to be appointed, nevertheless the slot for EURO in my opinion is not in danger for him, as often said. He will referee again an italian team, but when about Conference League this doesn't matter too much for committee, unlike the other two competitions.
I didn't expect Massa at PAOK - Club Brugge. The winner of this match could face ACF Fiorentina in the semifinal.

DeleteThat’s indeed a good point Peter. So, either they don’t care at this level or…?
66' in Florence: correct OFR. Gil Manzano missed a very clear SFP, studs very high from behind. Extremely dangerous action.
ReplyDeleteHere I think referee was focused on the SPA argument, foul just outside the box. He missed the severity of offense.

DeleteDespite home team protests regular goal by Villa, GK dropped the ball after colliding with his own teammate.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely correct decision, no foul! Easy for van Boekel, he needed short time to confirm. But Kruzliak rather too passive, all players with mobbing surrounding him. Even if he didn't want to book, he had to show himself definitely stronger there.
DeleteKruzliak is struggling a lot in this game. Lots of unneccesary cards and he cannot really connect with the players. His foul detection is very shaky as well. If that's his final test before Euro, I am not sure if this is enough from him. Now 30 mins more.
ReplyDeleteAs Quilave mentioned good decision for the goal to allow.
Yeah, at least Duran yc was wrong, Kruzliak reacted to Lille's player antics
DeleteIt is reported that Kruzliak showed second YC to Martinez, Aston Villa keeper, but he wasn't sent off. I don't know what happened. Maybe Kruzliak sorted out the card without issuing it?
ReplyDeleteCards reset at shootouts don’t they?
DeleteWhat was Kruzliak doing with the 2yc for Martinez?
ReplyDeleteKruzliak showed Emiliano Martinez a YC during the penalty shootout (right after the 1st series of penalties), which was his second YC, but didn't send him off. How is that possible??
ReplyDeleteWarnings and cautions (YCs) issued during the match (including during extra time) are not carried forward into kicks from the penalty mark (KFPM). A player who receives a YC during both the match and the KFPM is not sent off.
DeleteTough game to ref - with Lille spectators and Emiliano Martinez playing a game between themselves throughout the match. Got the goal correct despite lots of players trying to convince him differently. Great refereeing by Kruzliak. Apparently many spectators not knowing that the yellow (Martinez) card in the match is not carried into the penalty shoot-out ie correct that Martinez is not to be sent off.
ReplyDeleteThe second card was during penalty shoot-out, so the card from the match did not count
ReplyDeleteInteresting scenario in Lille, Kruzliak has had the goalkeepers stand at the top corner of the penalty area rather than the bottom corner during the penalty shootout. Then Emi Martinez made some gesture to the crowd and got a yellow card. He was already booked during the game, but of course that doesn’t carry over into the shootout (someone needs to explain that to the commentators!)
ReplyDeleteI admit my fault, I had missed this LotG update as well...
DeleteI wasn’t referring to you Chefren, but the TV announcers calling the game who thought the referee “changed his mind” or something. :)
DeleteOverall difficult situation to manage, but I think, Kruzliak basically did the right thing, except he should have booked Martinez a bit earlier for the finger to mouth gesture.
DeleteLooks like today it was the "worst" performance by Kruzliak in recent times, after having been always rather good in all his appearances.
ReplyDelete75' is surely a missed 2nd Yellow for SPA by Stieler.
ReplyDeleteneeds to be more for a 2nd caution. Player gets ball first.
DeleteNeither the SPA nor reckless criteria were met at 75', correct decision to not issue a (S)YC.
DeleteI plan to upload some clips from this game a bit later.
Early predictions
ReplyDeleteVillareal - Olympiakos: Jovanovic / Oliver
Fiorentina - Brugge: Schärer / Kruzliak
Final: Nyberg
It's Aston Villa, not Villareal, so Oliver won't be there for sure :P
DeleteOops, the danger of working with abbreviations..
DeleteThen I replace Oliver by Gil Manzano.
My predictions
ReplyDeleteAston Villa x Olympiacos: Jovanovic - Guida
Fiorentina x Brugge: Meler - Schärer
Final - Artur Soares Dias
