Personally I think that it is a well deserved appointment for Siebert, he was excellent in DEN-SCO just a few weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteSiebert last game in europe was Fenerbahce-Benfica (UCL playoff ) now He will referee Benfica again. Hmmm
ReplyDeleteProbably could have been managed better.
Deletethat time, Mourinho was Fenerbahce coach, now he is Benfica coach :) This is another detail 😁
DeleteChevren how do you interprate absence of any Portugal or Netherlands referees in champions league at least until now at the same we see some referees appointed two consecutive matches
ReplyDeleteAbout Portugal, Pinheiro is out because in Chile for U20 World Cup. After him, there aren't at moment options if not a debut for Godinho, as we discussed, and I think this could happen, but generally, the situation of the country is not that good, despite of being one of the most important European federation.
DeleteNetherlands: at this point we will surely have a Dutch referee on Wednesday, or maybe boh, the confirmation should be that van Boekel is AVAR in Vincic game on Tuesday, so expected to work as main VAR on Wednesday. We will know tomorrow, possible that both Makkelie and Gozubuyuk will appear.
Mr chevren do you want to say luis godinho, antonio nobre , or Portugal generally has not referee that have the capacity to handle champions league match at the same time Lithuania have this or Slovenia or any country
DeleteAnd other countries like Lithuania, Slovakia ، slovenia, Poland has presence !!!!
ReplyDeleteHow we can believe countries like Norway, Slovakia, slovenia, Poland, Lithuania have better referees than Portugal or Spain
ReplyDeleteLast night i watch luis godinho handle sporting and estrol and Wednesday freiburg vs basel I think he is one best referees now in Europe how we don't see in champions league
ReplyDeleteThe issue in your arguments is assuming that a comparison between certain countries is mandatory, that it has to be that way. In reality, the matter is much more complex in terms of refereeing. There can also be moments or periods when, for some circumstances, referees from a certain country reach a higher level compared to others. Now, this doesn't exclude the fact that referees from countries like Slovenia and Poland can produce outstanding referees, unlike other nations, such as Portugal, where, and I agree here, a very strong refereeing school should be developed. However, this does not always happen. Still, you can't put them on the same level, in the sense that there is still room for a referee from Portugal, just as there is room for a referee from Slovenia or Poland, and it is exactly y the job of the European head of refereeing to bring everything together.
DeleteOne can criticize Rosetti's working methodology, but in this regard, you can't reduce the discussion to such a simplistic consideration. Every aspect must be evaluated, and it must be understood that you cannot reason exclusively in terms of countries and their refereeing representation. At a certain point, other factors come into play. Moreover, the perspective must be holistic. Right now, we are talking about the second matchday of the Champions League, and what you see here doesn't apply as universal criterion Perhaps in a few months’ round, you will see more Portuguese and Dutch referees and fewer from other nations. I would invite people to analyze all components before drawing conclusions. It is not a discussion that should be approached in the way you are doing it. And, of course, evaluations are always subjective, you can say you appreciated the Portuguese referee in a particular match, and that could true, but we are not the ones to choose or make all the necessary evaluations. This is my point of view, trying to explain as clearly as possible how it should work, while everyone remains free to have their own opinions.
Mr chevren with all due respect for you I felt there is favouritism for some country it is not from the quality
DeleteMr chevren I felt some think is wrong why is give not given the Portugal referees like what is given italy referees or Slovenia referees now Lithuania have two referees in champions league and have not any referee until now !!!
ReplyDeleteI think that if you are already mentioning countries like Portugal, which have not been considered in the current season yet (as Chefren correctly clarified, some of them are currently participating in FIFA tournaments), you could also have noticed that Austria has so far been completely left out as well (Champions League + Europa League + Conference League + even Youth League). I assume that we might see some of them this week, but concrete conclusions can only be drawn after several matchdays. However, limiting it to Portugal and the Netherlands is a bit too narrow. From my point of view, I can say that Austria has not had a referee in the Champions League for a very long time, nor have they been assigned the most attractive matches in the Europa and Conference Leagues. When I read the evaluations of their performances in this forum, however, I get the impression that this is (unfortunately) understandable.
DeleteAfter Barbu on Friday, yesterday it was Goga Kikacheishvili's turn to referee in Kuwait. I must say, UEFA has a real star in its midst with this young Georgian referee, who handled the game in an excellent and very impressive manner - with a lesser official, I'm without doubt that the match would have finished in a big mess. Kikacheishvili had impressed me a lot by the way he refereed some games under UEFA auspices, but the level of difficulty in this Kuwaiti tie was much higher.
ReplyDeleteThe only area of contention comes from this handball incident below; the VAR was also Georgian, Giorgi Avazashvili:
https://www.streambug.io/cv/f51290
Meanwhile, Florian Badstubner refereed for the second time in Saudi Arabia this season, and gave a red card which he stuck to after VAR intervention (by Robert Schroder):
https://streambug.org/cv/2248a1
Aware that these games are very niche affairs, and that it doesn't make sense to write exhaustively about all of them on Law5 (besides really remarkable incidents, like in Barbu's game), I decided to make this blog page which I'll update with the appointments and then perhaps some clips/reports on the matches that I can watch or report on. Feel free to comment with anything I've missed or that is worth discussing!
Deletehttps://mikaelreferee.blogspot.com/p/dispatches.html
Siebert with Benfica and Mourinho,Chelsea and their run of matches where they get plenty cards.
ReplyDeleteCould be challenging for him.
Dear Abdiaziz,
ReplyDeleteTake it easy. We read the name of a Portuguese AVAR [Tiago Bruno Lopes Martins], so in my view, it is possible that we will see a Portuguese referee on Wednesday. If Kavanagh can be assigned, then e.g. Nobre likely can too. Early in the season, Rosetti aims to keep all associations satisfied; they all get representation, and quality does not take precedence.
Other names for Wednesday are probably Marciniak [Kwiatkowski], another Italian [Di Paolo], a Spaniard [Carlos DCG], and Gözübüyük [Van Boekel].
Di Paolo probably is in Kazakhstan and not in Nyon, but I agree on the rest. Maybe we can add Storks (for Stieler?) instead.
DeleteStieler is a good bet.
DeleteA second Italian is not impossible with Rosetti in charge (2nd game for Guida already!). It always seems Rosetti desperately has to tick off the Italian quota — see Massa, who somehow managed 6/8 group-stage games last season. The most of all referees.
Good news for Lukjančukas, after the arguments we introduced on the blog. He will be back in Champions League with big team away but expected win.
ReplyDeleteAbout Vincic, it's important to underline that Borosak is back as VAR, after a rather difficult period. This game is not a very top clash, but a good one between Spain and Germany, so maybe ideal for recovering in terms of performance from Nyon's VAR room (German VAR was not possible).
Turpin: here committee made an appointment based on the atmosphere, rather than on the level of the game. While Turkish side showed a very low level of football, they are very attentive with referees' decisions, and at home Rosetti doesn't want to take any risk. But only looking at teams, a different choice would have been made.
Taylor with a second appearance in Marseille: again, I really don't understand how some people can think he can get Spanish and/or Italian teams, it's impossible and so this one seems a very good one involving French and Dutch side. I would even describe it as a game close to the maximum level that the experienced English can reach at moment in the European top clubs competition.
Kruzliak, liked by Rosetti despite of many unconvincing performances, but still, the merit of the Italian head of refereeing is to have awakened the Slovakian from his lethargic moment years ago and now I assume it would be a pity to abandon him. There are a few arguments based on that, but still he is very far away from Elite full level. Here Bodo makes everything in terms of choice, Norwegian team used for the scope of appointing the referee from Slovakia.
Kavanagh in San Siro, not an Elite referee for Italian team, finally, but yes, the game speaks for itself. Still one should be very worried, it seems Brooks had this very long break for the injury and now again apart from Taylor and Oliver there aren't options for a development (Kavanagh can't reach more than that for me).
Siebert in London: very good game, at moment the level of Portuguese teams seems to be not the same as years ago, but still a nice clash for the German who is in a positive moment.
Eskås will referee the famous Atalanta - Club Brugge, after the mistake by Meler. Very importantr signal for him, big trust, Atalanta should have many hopes on this game, and it wil be a very open one.
Dankert is sent as VAR and that's not a case, strong name to avoid controversy (still, on paper...). To be watched!
Last but not least, Guida with a second game as well: one could have expected Massa (maybe he will appear on Wednesday?) but after the serious mistake in his last UEFA game (missed red card), it's possible a change. Here we must wait tomorrow to understand more, if better game for Massa than Guida, no argument, while on the contrary, what I think could be right. At first glance, one should only say no need to see Guida again so early for a second game. About the game itself, as I discussed days ago, even Category 1 was possible, but it depended on how committee would have read the match, you should add the enthusiasm from Kazakhstan fans and it will be surely a historic game, even tough maybe without real
concerns for the officials.
About Wednesday games: we see Marciniak VAR as AVAR, so the Polish could be in charge on Wednesday, while Van Boekel should mean either Gozuyubuk or Makkelie, possible we will see both with another VAR. Still no Dutch so far, and one is mandatory for next set of assignments.
Carlos Del Cerro appointed as well and I think it could be Gil Manzano with a second assignment or Hernandez Hernandez in charge (but very negative opinions about the referee from Canary Islands so far...).
Maybe also Lambrechts in charge, with Belgian VAR on Tuesday.
We'll see.
OT:
ReplyDeleteSassuolo vs Udinese
39'
2nd penalty whistled by Perenzoni was overturned by VAR decision.
IMO controversial to say the least,VAR should have made that call supportable.
https://streambug.org/cv/2b1ccc
Deletehttps://streambug.org/cv/538c53
Not the best day for Perenzoni, with two removed penalties in first half. In the first case, after a detailed analysis, it turned out that Sassuolo defender played ball slightly before and then contact by attacker. Second case: more controversial, one could say that with that action, the player took a risk, the VAR assessed it as fair action on the ball, but it's not a clear one because also contact with opponent. In my opinion that's not an universal NO PENALTY, indeed, but you can understand the argument by VAR. It's always about grey areas.. and how you see a situation. In particular, in the second case the announcement doesn't add anything for us, when this would be more needed than other situations, Perenzoni just said: "the player didn't commit any foul, so removed penalty...".
Chefren,I read your comment about the Galatasaray-Liverpool match.I'm aware that Galatasaray isn't currently playing football at a European level. But I think Galatasaray holds a historicial significance for Europians.I think Rosetti is aware of this as well. When we look at Galatasaray's other European matches, you'll see that they are mostly refeered by elite referees.
ReplyDeleteI agree about the reputation of Turkish team, absolutely, but it is not anymore the famous Galatasaray we knew from the past, nevertheless Elite referees are mostly assigned at home for the potential very challenging atmosphere.
DeleteChefren,I just read on the forum. Were the referees for the Champions Leaguse 1 st and 2nd week matches appointed together? This is true?
DeleteThey appoint elite referees to all the games played by Turkish teams at home. Last year, Turpin refereed
DeleteFenerbahçe-United game in
Europa League.
I noticed that several appointments for this set were made before Matchday 1 (MD1) was played. Unsurprisingly, these were all referees who weren’t active during MD1.
ReplyDelete*For example, Marseille–Ajax was only assigned after MD1, since Taylor was already officiating during MD1.
For Wednesday, four matches had their observers announced early (before MD1): Union–Newcastle, Qarabag–Copenhagen, Napoli–Sporting, and Dortmund–Athletic. These are likely the games given to referees who haven’t yet officiated.
Barcelona–PSG, on the other hand, was assigned late. Could it be Michael Oliver? That would make him the third English referee this round — is that even likely?
As far as I'm familiar with the functioning of the ref committee appointments for matchday 1 and 2 always go together.
DeleteMD1 and MD2 are normale appointed as one set. However, we have already noted some duplicate appearances (Taylor, Guida). Additionally, Lukjančukas officiated last week. This could explain the delay in some cases. I also anticipate that tomorrow’s list will include some names we already saw during MD1.
DeleteOT
ReplyDeleteIncredible level in Premier League, once again.
How on earth you can support YC in the Brentford - Manchester United holding, leading to the penalty? Shocking, red card for DOGSO 100% clear with attacker easily playing ball just in front of keeper (perfect pass). That's incredible for me, that's the ABC of refereeing, there should be a reason why we see only Taylor and Oliver but nobody else.
The live TV commentators were unhappy VAR took so long when the referee had clearly made the right decision. I completely agree with you, the VAR was so fixated that he wasn't in control of the ball and that it was in front of him by a small distance that he completely ignored that was only because of the pull. A clear Dogso missed
DeleteAgree, clear pulling,no attempt to play the ball and clear RC
DeleteRosetti and Co need to improve their appointments, already multiple double appointments, Gillet twice with Inter, Salisbury twice with Ajax.
ReplyDeleteWill we see Meler nominated for any role on Wednesday? If his motivation is high, perhaps he'll be selected for a match.
ReplyDeleteNo.
DeleteHis next appointment is in the Europa League on Thursday.
SK Sturm Graz vs Rangers in Austria.
OT:
ReplyDeleteAgain controversial decision with handball and PL.
Aston Villa and Fulham,25th minute,Cadh clearly makes his body bigger and stops the ball with his arm.
Not intentional but still,penalty imo.
Also Madley could face challenging match cause both teams are up to the task in terms of tackles.
DeleteI think the handball is okay, I'd expect that to be left onfield whether given or not. Arm behind back is seldom punished in England, especially when diving like that the expectation is it's natural for the arm to be away from body. Elsewhere in Europe, however, I'm sure a VAR would be expected to get involved. But I'm happy with no penalty
Delete(Also, as a side note, Madley was the VAR in yesterday's match at Brentford, that decided to not to get involved with the Dosgo mentioned above)
DeleteOT:
ReplyDeleteChelsea vs Brighton was also a challenging match for Hooper.
9 yellows,1 RC that was OFR and plenty fights and dirty fouls that could have resulted in more RC's.
Very interesting VAR intervention in Newcastle, penalty revoked after OFR from Gillet
ReplyDeleteI think a very good intervention. He got the ball first, and everything that followed was reasonable, certainly nothing reckless.
Delete34' Goal completely fine, Gabriel falls to the floor instead of trying to defend. No foul.
Then immediately after kick off from that goal, Gabriel lucky that no one spotted his hand in the face of Woltemade on field. A YC would be justifiable for that, but negliable force so nothing more.
Gillett also did well to ensure a towel wasn't used to dry the ball before an Arsenal throw in. He's seemed fairly alert, in a game that seems like it could heat up any moment
Penalty not whistled to newcastle in the end.. very chaotic.. I think it was a mistake by Gillett
DeleteOT: Also very interesting VAR intervention in Koeln vs Stuttgart. Goalkeeper hits striker but he easily plays on, then Var intervention with penalty what nobody expected
ReplyDeletehttps://streambug.org/cv/ac709a
DeleteThanks for the clip chefren! What is your opinion on this? For me never var stuff. Maybe if the striker falls immediately after contact, but then I would say also rather soft penalty. (I am no referee only football fan)
DeleteIs Chiffi allowed to show cards in Milan vs Napoli?
ReplyDeleteHe was poor today, keeping exactly this style that allowed players to be always about to burst. And then, when he had to show a clear RC for DOGSO, not a genuine attempt to play ball, he failed and needed VAR.
DeleteDespite of a development I could observe on past season, he gained credit, but still, when he wants to officiate a game in this way, he is not a referee one can like (my opinion, of course). Things can't be solved by themselves, you must intervene. He relies too much on the fact that players will behave fairly. But when this doesn't happen... troubles for referee. To add as minor mistakes, misse advantage when showing the only YC of the game (apart from the red card incident), and missed another YC at the very end for a reckless action in penalty area by Napoli attacker (off the ball, I think in this case spotted by AR2 but he didn't suggest the correct disciplinary decision). Also, he was hit by ball at least twice, didn't give the idea of being fully focused on the game.
What I liked was the time management, very good with 7 minutes and extending it to follow.
Also when Milan were countering clear yellow missed for tripping Milan player.
DeleteVery poor today and he tried to manage the game with only verbal warnings, also Leao at the end kicking the ball away.
Try that with Siebert.
Also Chiffi missed a clear advantage for Napoli in the added time. Why did he stop the game to book Milan player, he could have done it afterwards. Poor...
DeleteOk good to know
DeleteDo we know if Premier league have stopped using SOAT ? Haven't saw any 3D offside replay this season. I saw some pictures with lines for offside and the check time have been longer too.
ReplyDeleteFeels like they've been using it every game. Nketiah's late goal vs Liverpool yesterday comes to mind. At Man Utd vs Chelsea last week, Fernandes goal was extremely tight. They showed the 3D graphic for these. You can also check https://x.com/PLMatchCentre/media
DeleteEredivisie: Ajax - NAC
ReplyDeleteReferee: Marc Nagtegaal / VAR: Jochem Kamphuis
After OFR, The original decision stands. No interference at offside, Goal
https://youtu.be/BsHAQr3-cX0?t=191
Decisions based on this rule can sometimes be very difficult to understand. I tried my best to figure out why he thought there was no interference... In this particular case, we have obtained fairly strong evidence from the camera positioned behind the goal, showing the view of NAC's last defender (Boyd Lucassen), which strongly supports the decision that Kamphuis made to intervene.
According to NAC coach Carl Hoefkens, Nagtegaal explained to him that 'Lucassen couldn't reach the ball anymore.' At least, I find this explanation strange, and I absolutely disagree with it. On a Dutch television program, Ibrahim Afellay and Pierre van Hooijdonk had an interesting exchange of comments about this explanation:
''He's still allowed to stop the ball with his hands, right?'
'The rules don't allow that, and it's not even considered.'
Sorry, this might be a stupid question, but who is the real author of this blog, Chefren? I've always wondered.
ReplyDeleteOFR to revoke the penalty for Guida .. Images weren't that clear, but I don't know if VAR should have intervened there .. Felt like there was contact when I saw live .
ReplyDeleteWas it VAR stuff at all ?
DeleteI don't think so unfortunately
DeleteHonestly I don't see a clear and obvious mistake in the penalty given to Kairat Almaty. OK, it can be soft, but impossible to have the evidence it wasn't penalty. Disagree with Di Bello, for me controversial call, unless I missed something. Let's wait for UEFA official explanation.
ReplyDelete+1
DeleteIt looked like a clear penalty, but Guida had trouble seeing the touch clearly with the naked eye. Di Bello called him to check, and indeed, with the camera closing, the Kairat player apparently lost his balance and tripped over Ceballos's foot. But there are reasons to uphold the penalty, given the Kazakh player's cut to attack from distance. It's a dubious play for some, indisputable for others.

DeleteUEFA doesn't add anything interesting for us, just reporting:
Delete70' Decision overturned: No penalty
Real Madrid's player, No19, did not commit a foul on the opponent.
For me it looked like there was contact even it was minimal .. Once whistled, you do not revoke it .. Terrible VAR intervention and Guida not confident to continue with his call ..
DeleteClear schwalbe of Pasalic, but referee gives a PK with no overturn. Disgrace!
ReplyDeleteOpinions about the penalty at bergamo?
ReplyDeleteYeah looks like a dive
DeleteWould love to see a clip if possible.
DeleteHow on earth can Dankert confirmed Eskas bad decision to give phantom penalty to Atalanta ? Is german VAR was sleeping here ?
ReplyDeleteSerious? Clear penalty live at stadium, no player from brugge complaining (even the gk). Looked the video now and there are many clear replays from back and from left that's definitely a clear pk. Why
DeleteThe same Dankert from the controversial penalty awarded by Stieler in Bergamo in 2021. What an embarrassing situation for the German VAR.
ReplyDeleteCan anyone send a clip about the situation?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, slight contact from the goalkeeper, and thus the referee's whistle. Therefore, VAR Dankert should not intervene.
ReplyDeleteSo why did it intervene in the slight contact of the penalty given to Kairat Almaty?
DeleteI thought the same thing.
DeleteMinimal contact in Almaty, Di Bello interview. Minimal contact in Bergamo, Dankert interview. So, who's right?
Clip: https://streambug.org/cv/87ed03
ReplyDeleteThe penalty is a very harsh and penalizing decision against keeper, clearly attacker used the situation to get a whistle.
DeleteYou can't exclude the minimum contact, so VAR stayed silent. This is application of protocol by book by Dankert, but we don't see always this way of handling a situation... that's the problem. For me no penalty, but you can't revoke it once called.
Attacker Pasalic got exactly what he wanted. Referees are reminded that they love football, that they watch it as much as possible and that they understand it.
DeleteI honestly don't understand how anyone can argue about such a evident PK: the goalkeeper clearly grabbed the attacker's foot with one hand. The video clip in Chefren blog is crystal clear in showing what happened. The PK was correct, and the VAR remained silent.
DeleteThere will be many opinions on this controversial penalty, but the truth is that the play changed the course of the match in Bergamo. Will Lannoy (the match observer) agree with Eskas and Dankert's view?
ReplyDeleteHonestly only one opinion seems to be possible in this case. Just blatant dive.
DeleteI’m tired of the “there was slight contact so VAR can’t intervene” comments.
ReplyDeleteThe truth is: the attacker’s theatrics get rewarded. Neither the referee nor VAR gain anything by letting the decision stand. Just look at the Meler/van Boekel case last season. The referee (Eskas) will probably take the blame now and miss 1–2 matchdays, but VAR (Dankert) also gains nothing by staying silent, cause no journalist will praise a non-intervention.
VAR makes decisions according to UEFA rules and does not care whether he receives praise from journalists
DeleteHa, ironically Uefa itself does care about what journalists make of it…
DeleteYes Unknown, and that’s exactly my point.
Delete"VAR makes decisions according to UEFA rules."
DeleteIt's easy to theorize that VAR follows this, but it's risky. The difficult part is when the criteria are fair to everyone. Look at the VAR intervention in Almaty and the non-intervention in Bergamo. They all occur in the same game context: minimal contact.
UEFA should teach their referees that soft penalties are clearly wrong penalties, i.e. a reason for VAR to intervene. When in doubt or in the grey area, referees should tend much more towards no penalty than it is happening currently, I think.
DeletePenalty given by Turpin, correct for me and a good spot by an experienced referee.
ReplyDeleteReally an excellent positioning by Turpin, perfect view to see that the attacker was hit by the defender‘s arm.
ReplyDeleteHit?) It was a slight touch. I'd say supportable penalty but for me better to play on
DeleteOne or two missed fouls but overall fluid first half by Kavanagh in Milan.
ReplyDeleteHow did he do overall
DeleteSolid performance overall by Kavanagh.. Not a referee I usually like in EPL, but was good most of the game.
DeleteWas also a penalty given by Kruzliak in the first half. Late challenge after the attacker crossed the ball...clear pen imo.
ReplyDeleteTurpin with a near perfect (I might even say perfect) first half, great FK call right at the end of the half with correct caution to follow. Calm, composed and exuding class.
ReplyDeleteLondon is turning yellow due to sieberts cards.
ReplyDeleteJustified?
DeletePersonally i think some were just very unnecessary, however Siebert never lost control and had a high level of respect. So if his plan was to use cards to keep control, it certainly worked tonight.
DeleteOFR review by Vincic given for handball in Madrid
ReplyDeleteI mean Borosak given by Vincic
DeleteVery clear penalty, should have been detected directly by Vincic (who seemed to be in a good position).
DeleteOFR review overturning penalty given by Turpin
ReplyDeleteTurpin with an absolute howler of a pk call.. totally wrong, Turkish players incensed...clear var correction.very poor judgment call by clement Turpin, not impressive
ReplyDeleteCome on. Don’t be ridiculous. Very hard to spot on live. But good correction by VAR. Ball played first.
DeleteDon't exaggerate bro
DeleteGood 1st half. But Turpin's performance in the second half was rather modest: very indecisive technically, fouls called too late, always a little too far from the action, no effective disciplinary action.
DeleteThe mistake on the PK (cancelled by VAR) was extremely serious, unacceptable for an Elite referee, and certainly not hard to spot on live: that’s in a context where fouls were often reversed, the advantages were misplaced. It wasn't an easy match, but it was handled terribly.
We can't say handled terribly, if the players don't want to play the ref will not play for them. Really hard game as expected really good first half then rougher game in 2nd half. This final pk decision then overturn is what people will remember but at the end in this context not a bad game for Turpin.
DeleteApparently Turpin had the wrong perception there, because during the OFR, he immediately changed his decision, when he detected, that the defender played the ball first.
DeleteBut is it actually that clear? I mean, the defender still recklessly kicks his opponent. Playing the ball doesn't justify everything and he can only play the ball, because he acts dangerously.
I think Wirtz booked by Turpin for being kicked there. It's not been a vintage Turpin performance
ReplyDeleteJones, not Wirtz, was cautioned for running at the referee in protest at a (correct) decision - the same as Icardi and Cakir earlier in the match.
DeleteAh, thank you! That makes more sense
DeleteOvrerall i think Siebert had a good game, he kept full control using his cards. In the end both teams have no reason to moan and a well known Jose Mourinho cant have much to say tonight in London about the German.
ReplyDeleteSiebert both occasions now I've seen him recently (DEN-SCO) and tonight looked very good
DeleteThis might be the worst game Turpin has ever officiated in UCL
ReplyDelete????????
DeleteThe comments about Gala-Liverpool are quite bizarre, very good performance by Turpin who had a clear line throughout the match. It is a pity that he didn't award a defensive freekick rather than a penalty in the incident at the end of the game, otherwise a ≥8,6 mark could have been possible for the Frenchman.
ReplyDeleteAgain +1
Delete+1 correct game
DeleteHe refereed a very poor game today. I recommend you watch the game again.
DeleteObviously not up to date in your Uefa’ marking OFR = 7.9 but given favouritism by UEFA it will have no consequence for the Frenchman. If he was from another smaller country he wouldn’t be seen again
Delete@Mikael: although I always respect and appreciate your opinions, pardon but the comments on Turpin performance aren’t bizarre at all. On the PK removed by VAR he had 2 mistakes: the penalty and the valuation of the defender intervention (it would had had punished anyway with an indirect freekick). It’s too much for an Élite referee. He had a “clear line throughout the match”: but it was not the right line.
DeleteTo be honest, I'm not a fan of Turpin. He has a constant ego. His communication with the players is terrible. He refereed a very poor game today. He particularly failed to set consistent standards for cards and fouls. Awarding a penalty for a non-foul situation right in front of him in the second half was unbecoming of an elite referee. Those defending Turpin should watch the game again, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteTerrible communication with players ? Are you watching correctly the games is officiating ? If he's bad at it then there is not a single ref who communicate well.
Delete‘I’m not a fan of Turpin”
DeleteYes, it’s clear…
Good to see Siebert in a positive moment – when he’s in form he can definitely challenge Zwayer, and both ultimately profit by pushing each other to higher standards.
ReplyDeleteStrange to see Turpin dishing out 8 cards (Mikael obviously loved it ;)), a pity that he still needed VAR. Brisard showed his usual reliability, while Anthony Taylor hasn’t really been tested yet, given both Dutch teams he handled were far from their best. Vincic remains a strong game manager, but his decision-making on box incidents is less convincing – too often he needs VAR to clean up.
The broader discussion on VAR and “slight contact” is fascinating. In Kazakhstan, the intervention was a footnote in a 0–5 result, but in Bergamo it directly decided the outcome in favor of the Italian side. And while the goalkeeper there wasn’t smart, it was still clear the attacker had one goal only: to manufacture a penalty. The inconsistency is striking – But when an Italian side benefits, I doubt UEFA will issue strong reprimands tbh.
Some good arguments here, let me add I was thinking yesterday about the penalty in Almaty and the one in Bergamo. While in Kazakhstan, VAR has intervened based on "shouldn't be a penalty despite of a possible soft contact", the German VAR in Bergamo made the contrary " I can't deny the small contact, at least, so I can't question on this penalty".
DeleteOne should then address to Rosetti a question: what is the right approach? According to my opinion the right one, even if it leads to controversial confirmations of pitch decisions, should be the one in Bergamo. VAR started as "minimum interference, maximum benefit", but it's clear that now we have arrived at a very different point. I can also add that Rocchi instructed his serie A VARs (and Di Bello is among them) this season to intervene just whether if they think the incident is not a penalty. So, apart from the pure facts, you can indeed have a very different mental approach on them, and that's absolutely not good, that's the reason why VAR in penalty area situations is in most of the cases an useless tool, it just gives a second assessment, but can we be sure it will be the very correct one? No...
I do not like the idea of "if there's contact, we don't intervene" as I feel it rewards those players "searching" for penalties. The Bergamo situation was an example for this. Yes, there is minimal contact. But there is minimal contact in every one-on-one situation everywhere on the pitch. Contact is not forbidden in this sport. As long as the contact (in the Bergamo situation) does not cause the falling, it should not be a penalty. After reviewing this several times, I do not see how the minimal contact would cause the player to fall. It looks much more like the players legs collapse into the gk before being touched. If VAR followed protocol but the decision is not correct, the protocol needs to be reviewed.
DeleteChefren opinion is correct at all.
DeleteVAR can intervene only on clear mistake of the referee.
You can discuss about a small contact of not, yes. But I have reason to suppose that UEFA protocol prefers to have a minimal situation with controversial opinion about contact to be punished of not: the rule is simply that if there is any contact due to defender a PK is right.
Coming to Bergamo PK, the goalkeeper clearly raises his hand to try to catch the attacker's foot; it's not the attacker trying to find the goalkeeper's hand. In this specific situation, I honestly don't see what there is to discuss, IMO
From Kruzliak game:
ReplyDelete35' Penalty for late and reckless challenge by opponent after having played ball

Excellent decision, but YC missed.
55' Disallowed goal after OFR
https://streambug.org/cv/311b40
Tottenham's player, No37, pulled an opponent from the back in the build-up to the goal.
Vincic OFR, in my opinion he missed the touch due to the other player from Atlético in his line of vision, still a very quick incident, to me even if blatant at replay, mostly hard to spot live. Vincic didn't expect it in that exact moment.

Turpin OFR:
ReplyDeletehttps://streambug.org/cv/701f5a
Here the principle of "who plays ball before" was immediately applied, and while Turpin live made the contrary assessment, the video showed to him the evidence. Defender playing ball before, attacker then hitting him. It's interesting what Philipp wrote above, if we change point of view, looking for a real "clear and obvious mistake" we could still say that playing ball slightly before could be not enough, if you then hit opponent, but this would make things even more difficult. I don't think this was a very big mistake by French referee, as you can be easily deceived in such incidents.
The penalty whistled in first half:
https://streambug.org/cv/3a1c0e
I will always hate players celebrating a penalty call in their favor, but as referee one must stay as objective. In this case, attacker made it bigger than it really was and I can understand some arguments here above by other readers, but this is a penalty expected to be whistled. Clear action by defender and French referee in a very good position to spot it.
Very challenging game, starting from the atmosphere and this was exactly stuff for an Elite referee. All good by Turpin, a pity the final decision, but one can understand him.
Once again, let me add as final remark, you see the class of Turpin in his gestures, very different from other referees, when you watch him, you have the feeling it's like a full control on everything. The same feelings in this regard are very often under my eyes with Makkelie. Both the referees have something very catching in how they move their arms, strictly related to the events of the game. No other referee give me this feeling.
Agree with everything here, seems always in control and always find the ways to communicate with players when needed but at the same time know how to be respected.
