  1. Guida has been replaced in Pisa - Lecce, Doveri will officiate it with Guida working as AVAR.
I think at this point is possible he has once again physical problems and he could miss again the chance to officiate the Coppa Italia final.

    1. Schlager did well in Pyramids vs. Al-Ahly on Monday, as an addendum to this. He correctly awarded a clear penalty at the end of the game. The most important moment was a very tight offside ruled by VAR which disallowed a goal for Al-Ahly.
      Good luck to Jollenbeck today!

  4. Every time we are close to a World Cup I remember the fond memories of following and analyzing every game here with all the users! And I also recall Soham and the tragic outcome he had :( He was very enthusiastic and passionate about refereeing and was a great member of this blog.

So, I went to a rabbit hole this afternoon and checked the majority of threads of the 2018 World Cup in the archive of the blog, and if anyone is curious, the TOP-5 performances with most comments were the following:

1- Geiger (Colombia vs England): 518 comments!!! I believe this is the record for any match in this blog, we had even a third match thread for this one (https://law5-theref.blogspot.com/2018/07/2018-fifa-world-cup-match-56-colombia_99.html) (Chefren correct me if I am on the wrong here). As I remembered, users were appalled by the lack of acceptance by players and also the lack of authority and charisma of Geiger (happened the same in Portugal vs Morocco). Interestingly, some of the users, including Chefren, were saying before the match that he could even officiate the final! He arrived to Russia in a very high regard and left being labelled by some users as the "geek" or the "nerd" of refereeing, contrary to the "pitbull" and "rock" Pitana for exemple. For the second consecutive WC, the most controversial performance by a referee is in a match with Colombia presence. Geiger follow Velasco in a tortuous path to destruction (according to the users, both being "disarmed" by FIFA instructions).

2- Brych (Serbia vs Switzerland): 321 comments. Yes, the infamous "Mitrovic penalty" and the "Brych-Zwayer situation". Quite a lot of debate in the blog about the action, even 50/50 I would say (some of the users believed that Mitrovic committed an offensive foul and that the situation had quite a "grey areas" and was not a clear and obvious mistake). First and last game for Brych in the tournament, so is clear what FIFA thought about it.

3- Mazic (Brazil vs Belgium): 320 comments. Very positive reviews and comments for the serbian after the match, a "masterclass" of refereeing for a lot of users.

4- Irmatov (Argentina - Croatia): 311 comments. Well, well, well... What to say about this match, I believe (if I am not wrong) Irmatov achieved during that World Cup the record for most refereed matches in a World Cup, but his two games (Spain vs Morocco being the second and last one) in the tournament were quite a disaster. Extreme leniency which was heavily criticised by the users in the threads. Not ejecting Otamendi after the argentinian defender had shot the ball to Rakitic with quite the power at 30cm!! left the users quite shocked. Missed RC to Rebic in the first half as well.

5- Pitana (France vs Croatia): 306 comments. The best referee of the tournament for some of the users (Faghani and Kuipers being the other choices of the users) had a busy afternoon in the final, with the users commenting vividly the foul that originated the first goal of France and also the handball penalty. The general consensus is that Pitana "survived" and avoided major controversies and steered the ship, so he was mainly praised.

As I said, Pitana, Kuipers and Faghani were the most praised officials by the users, the Iranian's performance in France vs Argentina being labelled a brilliant masterclass and the best performance of the whole tournament. The Iranian was voted by the community as the best referee of the tournament.

Irmatov, Roldán (what an abysmal tournament by him, missed penalties in England-Tunisia and whatever was that performance in Suadi Arabia-Egypt), the aforementioned Brych and Marciniak (missed penalty in Germany vs Sweden) were the disappointments of the WC according to the users.

The polish missed the next big tournament (!!) by technical choice (EURO 21) and came back to the World Cup in 2022... to referee the final and doing it brilliantly!! An absolute turnaround and quite a story (I want to review that 21-22 season by him and "detect" in which games he recover the best version of himself).

    1. Diedhiou was the positive surprise of the tournament, with a lot of users thinking that the senegalese even deserved more than 2 GS and a Round of 16.

The predictor game was a huge thing going on in the tournament for the users (including myself, which by the way, with another username, which I will not state as is my real name, I achieved great results). Nobody expected Cunha for a SF, that was quite a shock! I hope the game is back for this World Cup, with even more games and officials, it will be even trickier!

We have to thank Chefren and other notable users (EuroSoccer Ref, Mikael, Howard Maxi, etc.) for this great platform and all the good moments and memories we have from this great blog!

    2. Thank you very much for taking the time to write this comment. Reading again the history of this blog and all the major competitions that have been discussed and covered here, I'm really impressed as well. Maybe, I'm not even realizing that. Thinking about what has been created here as a point of reference for modern international refereeing is a honor. I often reflect on it and ask myself how it could have happened in this way, and I can almost never find an explanation. But a success must only be recognized by others, it shouldn't be seen or judged personally: so thank you once again: that's the success.

    3. Someone months/years later, in a very bizarre place, leaked some internal FIFA evaluations about that tournament. I made a note of them all somewhere but can't find the file. I remember that the penalty area incident in Germany-Sweden was deemed a mistake a mistake by Marciniak (and Turpin), missed intervention for a penalty and YC to be shown. If I remember rightly, the Rebic foul was educationally to be considered a RC, but I don't think this specific incident cost Irmatov that much. According to a book released in recent years, FIFA changed the internal evaluation of the famous Mitrovic incident after a few days: at first it was an acceptable call, but then they changed their mind and it was deemed as a missed penalty/intervention. I remember that the VOR footage from that match didn't paint the VAR crew in the best light.

    4. FIFA also published this document after the tournament:
      https://fifa-backend.pressfire.net/media/newsletter/FWC18-Refereeing-VAR-Report-Statistics-Finals-STATS.pdf

I think VAR has, overall, been very bad for football/refereeing (it has only changed one kind of controversy for another and created more, not less, pressure and attention on referees) but it is easy to forget the optimism and even transparency in both FIFA and UEFA at the start of their VAR projects, now long since passed. I guess the Covid period and everything that entailed as a lot to answer for!

    5. I remember couple of months or even years after WC 2018 there was audio clips from VAR of this competition that was uploaded on the blog, do someone know how to find it anymore ?

    6. The consensus in the blog was that the general level of refereeing was very high in that tournament, contrary to what was thought in 2022 besides the final.

So, if we had to make a list of the worst refereeing debacles this century in every World Cup (terrible performances in sonorous and very relevant matches, so I will exclude awful performances in (irrelevant matches) GS for example, à la Roldan in 2018), I assume the list would go something like this:

      2022: Mateu in Argentina-Netherlands.

      2018: Geiger in Colombia-England.

      2014: Velasco in Brazil-Colombia.

2010: More of linesmen disasters/nightmares (Larrionda in England-Germany and Rosetti in Argentina-México, although not their fault).

2006: Ivanov bloodbath in Nurenberg (Netherlands-Portugal), although I believe he was not that bad and that almost any referee would have failed here. Honorable mention for Poll three yellows to Simunic in a very heated, decisive and relevant match.

2002: Pick whichever you prefer between Moreno and Al-Ghandour "helping" Korea to the semi-finals.

      Do you agree?

    7. First of all,let me say that I appreciate the time you took and brought us back to that time, really great from you.

It's maybe harsh to say debacle, but in terms of not having control yes,I would say couple of matches are sticking to my mind but then again, some
      of those teams and matches were impossible ti handle;

Yes,Mateu with his 2022 Argentina and Netherlands but then again, any ref here would struggle cause you had players with big egos and big tackles flying(Paredes example).

Then in 2018 look Argentina again, and Irmatov with probably 2 RC's missed,Rebic and Otamendi.

Also I can remember that game cause everyone expected fair and okay game and also he tried to guide that game with his experience.
      It escalated pretty quickly.
Then he had Morocco and Spain, neighboors derby and he missed Pique two footed tackle and also wrong side of the corner when Aspas scored.

From that wC we had Brych and famous Serbia vs Switzerland(Albania).
We also can remember Ramos and his no foul call with CR7 screaming at his face.

2014 we had that famous Velasco for sure, but we also had Nishimura and his ridiculous penalty in favour of Brazil in opening match vs Croatia.

Also,in Final match plenty are talking about" missed RC" for Neuer by Rizzoli and also missed RCfor Howedes if I'm not mistaken.

Also, missed Suarez biting incident on Chiellini and we had plenty RC's if I remember correctly.

2010 yes, famous Rossetti incident,England goal line missed but ultimate bloodbath wqs in the Final where Webb was not able to control both Netherlands and Spain.

      2006 yes,famous battle of Nuremberg where Ivanov issued 16 YC's and 4 RC's.
Imo,all of them correct,if he wqs stricter Bouhlarouz should have received RC in first 10 minutes for foul on Ronaldo.

Also, famous RC to Zidane is still big incident.

2002 little too young to watch, but reading we heard about helping South Korea and Moreno and some other refs..
Also,Collina in the Finals,it probably does not get better than that.

      Delete
    8. Also,Tello with Serbia vs Switzerland(Albania) in 2022 was also something else.

Around 10 cards, fiery match, big stakes and no backing down from each team.

      Also,hatred towards each other.

    9. Just to throw in Euro,here are some performances that I dont if they had big number of comments,but are for sure talking points then or maybe now;

      2024:

      Makkelie Italy-Croatia
      Taylor Spain-Germany
      Kovacs C.Republic-Turkey
      Turpin Germany-Scotland

      2020:

      Makkelie England-Dennmark
      Mateu Porugal-France

      2016:

      Velasco Albania-Switzerland
      Moen Wales-Slovakia
      Kralovec Romania-Albania
      Kuipers Croatia-Spain
      Hategan Ireland-Italy
      Cakir Italy-Spain
      Rizzoli France-Ireland
      Skomina Wales-Belgium
      Rizzoli Germany-France

    10. In 2024 Kovacs in his above mentioned game is the standout for me.

In 2022 Mateu and also Siebert in Uraguay v Ghana.

In 2021 yes Makkelie in England v Denmark.
