Everyone asleep it seems.
ReplyDeleteNot too much controversy in terms of decisions or fouls.
Goal for Australia, good positioning by the referee on that counter attack by Australia and fitness in his finishing position.
ReplyDeleteA goal now, so the game should open up. More challenges and match will be played at a higher tempo
Not a first half to remember! Good choice from those who are sleeping!
ReplyDeleteValenzuelan has made a positive impression in the first half. He has shown good foul recognition, not buying into Turkish players who go down easily, while still identifying clever fouls when necessary and maintaining good flow in the match. He demonstrates strong presence in situations, both during active play and after the whistle, using a mix of informal and public verbal warnings to players. Overall, he has displayed good movement patterns and a natural leadership style on the field. It is encouraging to see this performance following Martinez’s display yesterday.
ReplyDeleteAgree, my only comment to add here is that this match difficulty hasn’t been high. At this stage medium to low, as the desperation increases from the Turkiye team then it might change as the second half progresses
DeleteAgree
DeleteClear yc missed
ReplyDeleteThat was my feeling. Minimum strong warning at the least, I would have thought YC would have been accepted by all. I’ll be honest, it’s probably the first time during the match sanctions to be used
DeleteThe situation is really borderline, but the player has not yet built up full speed. However, he has control of the ball, a clear direction toward goal, and space to advance in a 2-vs-3 situation just outside the penalty area, so the attacking potential is high.
DeleteThe player in yellow only goes in to stop the ball carrier, so a caution for a tactical foul would have been the perfect decision here
Just to add, it was the first type of situation in the match.
DeleteCorrect foul for turkey min 55
ReplyDeleteNpk excellent desicion hand in natural position
ReplyDeleteEasy decision but you can only call and referee the decisions/match in front of you
DeleteWhat do you mean?
DeleteIn terms of a handball call, I don’t think it was a tough or difficult decision.
DeleteYou must referee the match you are assigned, even if it isn’t the most difficult match of the tournament thus far.
Correct no-call for handball when Turkey takes a shot inside the attacking penalty area. The distance is very short, the defender's arm is in a natural position, and the ball arrives unexpectedly. The arm does not make the body unnaturally bigger, and there is no deliberate movement toward the ball. Therefore, play should be allowed to continue.
ReplyDelete83:30 Incorrect flag by AR2, resulting in a free kick for Turkey. The referee is well positioned with a clear line of sight and is in the best position to judge the challenge. In this situation, the assistant referee should avoid intervening and allow the referee to make the decision.
ReplyDeleteAgree. I think he made an earlier intervention and maybe got carried away
Delete86’ Reckless against Turkiye. Easy call
ReplyDeleteYes, correct YC
ReplyDelete85:20 – Correct yellow card. The Turkish player stops a promising attack with a tactical foul and prevents the opponents from moving forward.
ReplyDelete90+6 Ar2 flags foul…. Not given by Ref. 😀😀😀
ReplyDeletegood refereeing in easy match
ReplyDelete+1
DeleteAgree, he made a positive impression throughout the match. Bravo!
DeleteGood performance by the referee from Venezuela, I think we could describe this one as easiest game of the tournament so far, but of course not referee's fault.
ReplyDeletehttps://x.com/bigjosh2000/status/2065972388735398005?s=46&t=Ok5OCp_U1mZPFDKlm4EOGQ Is FIFA justified a clear wrong decision with this « onside » ?
ReplyDeleteWell, I mean, you can’t tell where the line was drawn for the defender because the picture is cropped. So that doesn’t really prove anything.
DeleteThis image is from…fifa Media tweet…so….

DeleteAlright, then I‘m not so sure about it.
DeleteGenetlmans, my comments on three games played last night/morning:
ReplyDeleteVery good performance by Vincic. Trustued by all parts involved in game, led game fully under control from first to last moment without problems. Missed 1-2 YC, with one more mistake which finally was correct call after VAR( CORNER KICK),are not big problem in game like this. Some fouls that he let to play was part of criteria on both sides. Vincic pathway continue definetely.
Ghobral perfromance was average, becouse he showed lack in disciplinary and tehnical way, also some obvious mistakes in judgment way, but,at the end, without controversy.
Valenzuela performance was very good in easy game, nothing to report
One thing that I would like to mention is that I see a lot of comments which goes too critical and harsh on referees. Every game unitl now finished without controversy or decision that impacted on final outcome, what is very good for referees,Fifa, and officiating community, so I would like to please that this blog should be place for more objecitve comments(I exlude 5-6 guys led by Chefren, becouse their comments are very good and objecitve). I know, nobody should stop freedom of speaking and writing, and I dont try that, but all of us like to learn and see more objecitve comments. All of us love refereeing, but someone of us need to be aware that Marciniak WC Final pefromance is not possible in all games.
Very good comment. It’s easy to criticize and nitpick when you’re sitting on the sofa. So far, the referees have performed well and stayed out of the spotlight—with the exception of the opening match. Keep it up.
DeleteCompletely agree. I'm glad to read this, thanks for your comment
DeleteI find this view quite interesting. I am all for supporting referees, but when referees don’t enforce the laws, they fail to support the rest of us, and when we go back to our own competitions and do apply the laws the decisions are harder because “they didn’t give that as a yellow card in the World Cup” so we must hold each other accountable. And to be fair I think there is a possibility that the instructions they have received are to ignore certain offenses or avoid cautions, which we cannot blame the referees for. I think the majority of comments agreeing that a caution should have been given (especially some during Vincic’s game yesterday) are a pretty objective indicator.
DeleteI think this problem at its core comes about from opposing views on what refereeing is, it is not about “getting out of the game with 22 players” or “avoiding the spotlight” it about enforcing the laws and protecting the game. Even if this means we send off players and are thrust into the spotlight. Having extraordinary courage and conviction is what I like to see in a referee. I see a trend globally of how the game has become less about football and more poor behavior. In my view this is because of exactly this mindset of avoidance of making the hard, unpopular decisions, and holding the line on the laws. We make all of our lives easier and the football public happier if we all enforce the same laws and don’t ignore offenses.
Why the AR's are wearing "FIFA referee" badges instead of "FIFA assistant referee"?
ReplyDeleteAnd I have a question why we get nominations for 8 referees per match and in 2022 there were 10
ReplyDeleteI wonder if this result now affects appointment for TUR - PAR in the next round as it has become knockout match. Team that loses is out of the tournament. Maybe more high profile name can now be expected.
ReplyDeleteThe Dutch newspaper, and biggest critic of the Dutch Football Association and referees, De Telegraaf, reports that FIFA has confirmed that Danny Makkelie made the correct decision in cooperation with the VAR by reversing the yellow card and giving it to the Paraguayan player Almiron. If this is true, then we can expect Makkelie to continue in the tournament.
ReplyDeleteDe Telegraaf is often more tabloid-style in terms of news, but given their attitude of being very critical towards the KNVB, I believe this report more than their other reports. They are not quick to give a compliment.
Has anyone seen an official FIFA statement via their own media yet?

DeleteObviously? I don't know why people would suggest that it was a mistake. Danny Makkelie doesn't do mistakes, end of.
DeleteThey forgot to mention that FIFA considered that he made a mistake in the restart; it should have been with a dropped ball.

I apologize, but this is a blog (a place for discussion and debate within the bounds of respect, and also respect for dissenting opinions).
ReplyDeleteIn the WC it's normal for people from other regions to come to this blog to contribute with counterpoints, and that's great and what makes this channel fantastic for me. Although, since 2010, I've been coming here hoping for more productive interactions, what I observe is always an exacerbated Eurocentrism, with each referee and their respective fan base inflexible to their preferences, whether due to style identification or country of origin. We need to improve on that. I was a referee in South America and I have some different opinions, and that's fine! When I express opinions, it's based on the match itself, and I compare it with the referee's own performance in other situations and with the performances of other referees in similar situations in the same WC and past WCs.
I'm not a fan of the referee as an individual, and I don't have any preferences for any particular country or region. I root for refereeing in general, and in that I try to be fair.
Sampaio made a mistake in the first match, perhaps due to debut nervousness. Pitana once said he was more nervous in his debut than in the final. There are mistakes, yes, but they're understandable.
I expected more from Tello, Makkelie, and Ghorbal, because they've had fantastic performances before, and we know that a Dutch TV channel "going easy" on Makkelie is like a mother praising an ugly child. His mistake is also perfectly understandable, but it happened.
Vincic is always like that. He only delivers average performances, so you can't expect strawberries to grow on an orange tree. He is limited and OK, useful for the first phase, R32 and that's it (not about the person but his performance as a referee)
Martinez surprised me with his consistency, composure, good vision and behavior in difficult plays and let's admit that it was the best refereeing so far.
Let's be technical? OK bur let's make comparisons and put aside our fan side of countries or names a little, or then let people comment freely. It is with contrary and sometimes harsh opinion that we evolve.
+1 I like to read such comments they define the blog for these comments the blog is a safe place. Bravo Fab GX
Delete@ Fab GX: Good comment, thank you.
DeleteOne small correction:
- Telegraaf is well informed when it comes to refereeing matters in the Netherlands.
- Dutch media “going easy” on Makkelie is not true. They are very critical. If anything, being the #1 referee puts a target on your back here.
