    1. Yes, this is the second or third time that he has interfered with play and with the players involved in contesting for the ball…

    2. Well, this is the best match so far in a terms of the rhythm and speed of the football... It is definitely hard to follow the play and to find the right spot on the field

  4. So we get a graphic for the very obvious onside before the Morocco goal but not for the Swiss penalty? All that will do is feed any conspiracies about whether the penalty was actually onside

    1. But good first YC at 38’ and no issue from technical performance by slovenian ref.

  7. Vincic's positioning is absolutely terrible, especially when Morocco is on the attack. I guess he didn't do his homework/analyse on the Moroccan team

  9. I think Vincic has been very good so far. 2 correct cautions and decent accuracy in his decision making. His positioning hasn't been great but some of the above comments are very hyperbolic in their criticism

  10. Again now good second YC for Brazil. Disciplinary line is perfect.

    1. As his positioning was an issue all game, you’d think he had missed it but his positioning was perfect to see this foul.

  13. Clear YC missed and maybe more at the end of the half.

  14. Missed very clear reckless caution for foul committed against Vinicius. No foul called.

  15. Foul forgotten on Vinicius at the end but very difficult to assess live. I was ok first with the no foul decision.

  16. Good half performance i think but i dont like jeryeys

  17. Vincic not convincing in this halftime. Worst positioning, missed a lot of fouls and instable in your gestures. As positive, only YC applied. Maybe in 2nd half can lost match control if he persist with this terrible style

  18. Good first half for my taste, I cannot agree with some of the comments above. Vinčić applied an optimal foul threshold while maintaining the flow of the game, he seems to be very alert regarding specific fouls/players that may generate some conflicts. Disciplinary line was adequate for me in general, good YC in 37' and 43' for tactical fouls. However, a rather bad miss in 45+3' for a foul on Vinicius, definitely worthy of a caution for my taste. It was rather difficult to properly perceive and assess, but it definitely tarnishes the performance (I'm really curious to see how Vinicius will behave after this, his reactions after the HT whistle were terrible as usual).

I do agree Vinčić's positioning is definitely suboptimal, but I wouldn't use some of the stronger words I read above.

  20. Another missed YC,very clear that Vincic should have seen.

We went from excellent disciplinary line to questionable.

  21. Another missed caution for a very similar foul. This one with a higher point of contact

  22. Another missed YC for the same foul

  23. Missed blatant YC for Guimaraes by Vincic.

  24. Poor from Vincic to miss so obvious YC

  25. Missed yellow for Hakimi...

  26. Clear SPA by Fabinho no YC

  27. And I cant figure it out why all of a sudden he became typical lenient ref that he always is..

Everything was going so well when he handled the match by the book.

Now again,Thiago with late foul that will probably be just another verbal warning.

  28. some people here want 10 YC in a pretty fair match. What happens if a ref follows that line can be seen in the infamous Kovacs match (Czechia-Turkey) from the last Euros. Everyone that has watched any CL games officiated by Vincic knows exactly what they're getting.

    1. No,but why did he not give YC's that were crystal clear?

      Hakimi and Guimares.

Those were stonewall YC's that needed to be shown without number 10 to 15.

  29. Multiplication of fouls and too lenient line by Vincic IMO to let players doing whatever they want with infringments…

  32. From a technical perspective not an expected level performance by Vincic. Yes, full control, good communication, but too many obvious and reckless fouls missed. Still no big mistakes in respect to the outcome of the match though.

    1. I think you need to account for the spirit of the law. In this case it was a clear genuine injury and most players were just taking on water

    2. Collina said there is no sanction if they still do it. So it was absolutely pointless to even create it as a directive if the referee can’t do anything about it when they don’t listen.

    1. He missed 4 YC and perhaps a red one for Hakimi at the end of first half. So definitively not « the best performance »…

      Delete
    2. There were more than 2 he missed. In my opinion not acceptable performance. He avoids doing anything that makes anyone unhappy or make any decision that would receive pushback, instead of refereeing the game in front of him. I agree that his management is good, so good that he instead manages situations where he should give the technically correct decision (cautions).

  43. As others have said, things are as they are. You can't expect much from Vincic. Perhaps "OK" is an adjective can be used with the best of intentions. He maintained control with teams that don't complain and aren't too unfair, but he's not convincing overall. His positioning and the security of his decisions are questionable points. Maybe a referee for up to R32, nothing more.

    1. I hope not a QF, he would lose control, unless it was not a challenging game. He’s all bark no bite, and players pick up on that.

  44. So what’s the total number of missed yellow cards?

  45. Vinic after this performance no need to give him another game there is more good referre in uefa than him

    1. Only Turpin, Letexier, Oliver, Marciniak. The first three have the problem that their national team is one of the very top

Vincic can easily get a quarterfinal if England and France reach the semifinal maybe even more

  46. In the end, another match finished without major discussion or even obvious mistake. And this was an important match with two big teams involved. So, FIFA will be happy overall. Stil they won‘t be too excited about Vincic‘s performance, too many technical errors, which leave a "so-so“ impression. His path will continue without doubt but definitely there is room for improvement…

    1. I can mostly agree with your summary, however Vinčić's 2H saw a clear decline in the quality of his performance, especially regarding the disciplinary line with two rather clear cautions missed: 49' (BRA8, reckless with a high point of contact) and 90+7' (BRA17, kick on foot in the air). With some deficiencies in technical accuracy, especially during the worst period 45'-60' (54', rather wrong advantage for Brazil instead of a foul on Vinicius; 58', missed illegal use of arm by BRA20), the performance in the 2H can be described as suboptimal from a technical standpoint (probably even harsher if I take into account 3 more or less clear YCs missed overall). On the other hand, he did manage the game effectively, maintaining full control and (mostly) general acceptance.

In the end, none of his decisions impacted the final result, but I still cannot say I like this performance. Seeing such a typical Vinčić performance after a rather good 1H disappointed me a bit, frankly. I can still remember the time when he was a very different referee, back when he was Category 1 in UEFA, and sometimes I miss that version of him. Having said that, he is definitely a very good referee, no doubt for me about that. However, this performance has raised some usual questions yet again.

  47. Tbh, two UEFA referees least satisfactory so far. They weren't bad, but they were most inconsistent and with problems in disciplinary and foul detection

    1. Agreed, definitely not as expected. Hopefully will see improvement tomorrow with Letexier. On the list of UEFA referees I expect consistent good performances from, he’s near the top.

  48. Tbh I feel at times on this blog we sometimes get caught up a lot on the technical aspects of a performance (missed bookings etc)
I feel at times we forget the most important things
Did Vicnic control the match? Yes (whether you like him or not he had control)
Did he get the kmi correct again there wasn't really any to worry about
Will there be news stories about his performance tomorrow and the answer will be no
Did he have a small problem with positioning and miss a few yellow cards yes but at the end of the day the out in a solid enough performance in a match that included two of the top ranked teams and I see no reason why he can't at least get a quarter final

    1. Really? He failed to enforce the laws. He eroded the credibility of every other referee in the world who does. He picks and chooses when to enforce the laws when it is most convenient. He avoids taking difficult decisions, avoids giving clear cautions, has inconsistent foul selection. I honestly think that at least some of the cautions he completely knew were cautions but decided not to give them because they weren’t obvious to everyone and would have been “unpopular.” The game itself was not even challenging, especially since he was able to get away with not punishing several cautionable offenses. His positioning was also not good, he was in the way several times.

  50. Here again the usual comments that lowers the blog's level with the phrases "he should go home after this performance," and so on, without analyzing the performance (too long and difficult).
I checked the incidents, thanks to RefNewGen for the live videos.
Definitely some missed YC and some fouls, that you can't expect by a referee with his experience. Nevertheless, nothing major or very relevant and a game ended without controversy and with a rather unexpected final score, and that's what matters for FIFA.
However, in terms of asseessing of performance one must say that the referee should have done better.
3 cards were mandatory for me, but in most of situations, he just missed the fouls.
The Slovenian will certainly have other matches, but what we should point out is that very often he didn't show to be at same level of other Elite referees under a strictly technical point of view.

    1. Forgot to add: when corner kick mistakes are so evident, in my opinion it's OK to correct, very clear last touch by attacking players. But of course other situations will be not easy like this one...

  51. If we are to summarize his performance based on the key incidents, I have not watched the full match (I was asleep) and am relying on the clips put together by RefNewGen.

36:40 – Good first yellow card for stopping a promising attack.

42:40 – Correct yellow card for reckless play. It can also be justified as a tactical foul, so there are several ways to support the decision.

48:20 – Clear missed free kick and yellow card for the Moroccan player. The challenge is a reckless stamp on the foot. This would also have been a good opportunity to balance the disciplinary line, as Brasil was already leading 2–0 in yellow cards.

48:40 – Another clear stamp on the foot, this time by a Brazilian player. A reckless challenge and a missed yellow card.

53:19 – This is never a promising attack for me. The defense is well organized, the attacker lacks speed, and the defender’s intention is not clear enough to justify a yellow card for a tactical foul. Even more concerning is the advantage played by the referee, which feels unnatural and does not fit the situation. If you believe there is a foul, it would be better to stop play immediately. A free kick in that position, close to the penalty area, is a much better opportunity than the very limited advantage Brazil received.

57:40 – AR1 is too passive here and should help the referee. There is a clear arm to the face. Personally, I see it more as careless than reckless, but play must be stopped and a free kick awarded.

89:40 – Brazil starts a counterattack, but the incident takes place too deep in their own half. There is no clear attacking potential, so we cannot justify a yellow card for stopping a promising attack. The threshold would be far too low.

96:20 – Another stamp, but this one is much easier to support with only a free kick. The opponent’s foot is off the ground, which reduces the impact of the contact. We also need to consider the force used by the Brazilian player, which is low. He comes in from the side with his studs making contact with the opponent’s foot, but there is a clear attempt to play the ball. Looking at the incident in isolation, I would strongly lean towards a free kick only as the correct outcome. The referee’s proximity and presence also help support that decision. In summary, there were some difficulties in assessing foul play and applying the disciplinary scale consistently throughout the match. However, he did well to maintain focus and bring the game to a controlled conclusion. That said, when evaluating one of the world's top referees, the expectations are naturally higher.
