    Just to answer some comments on the blog: there will be WC coverage with appointments and discussions for all games, but differently from previous editions for sure it will not be so detailed. Not a single post for each game, will try to include more games in one discussion or something like that. Unfortunately I can't wake up in the night at that time and I don't have motivations to do that. Really sorry to all, bu nothing more is possible on my part this time. For those who are more enthusiast than me, enjoy this WC.

    On the appointments: good sign for Sampaio, the referee for the opener should be always considered as candidate for the final, but this time we know, with Brazil and Argentina it could be less likely. However, for sure they will give him a lot in case of good performances.
    To follow, big trust on the Egyptian for sure, an early debut for a CAF referee at this WC, given the current situation, was maybe a bit hard to predict. The level of the game can justify the choice and maybe we can say this assignment is the first visible "effect" of a WC with more games than the previous editions.
    The other big name for CONMEBOL will be in charge of Canada, that's easy to explain, they are another host, otherwise the assignment, with a game like this, would have been by far lower. And here I could already start critizicing FIFA for how they work, but we know. Making all pleased, but not caring about people. Absolutely unexpected in my opinion, let me repeat it, by a person like Collina.
    Last but not least, Makkelie with USA opener, nothing to add, very good start in terms of consideration for him.

      Agree with most , most serious disagreement is with Makkelie for US game . Danny can be influenced by "outside" forces . Expect some controversy over decisions for US & against Paraguay. Controversy if US loses , Mr. Trump would not be happy.

    Sampaio is a logical choice, coming from a QF at the last tournament. He was the favourite among the non-UEFA referees in discussions about the appointment.
    Tello and Makkelie in the two other opening games are also sensible. Maybe a slight surprise to see two CONMEBOL referees though.
    Good sign of trust for Makkelie after no KO game in 2022. But he had a QF at the CWC, so no surprise and a deserved appointment.
    Mohamed might be the most surprising one in this set, because FIFA tends to go big on the first days. Also KOR-CZE is not sonorous, but on paper the game for second place in group A. So at least remarkable, that he has been chosen above e.g. Ghorbal. Will be interesting to follow the CAF pecking order during the tournament.

    Benitez as 4th official shows that not only support referees will work in that role (but still could be a exception made for the opener). The obvious choice would have been Claus there (and Herrera for Tello btw), but they preferred to mix more.

    On the VAR side, the most interesting point is, that del Cerro Grande and not Higler works as main VAR for Makkelie, indicating more trust for the Spanish official.
    Gallo above Toski for Sampaio could be expected, given the experience of the Colombian in that role.

    I was expected that will be a CONMEBOL for the opening game at WC 2026. Because it`s start in Mexico, a latin country with a hot atmosphere. So, I think Sampaio could handle better the game than Oliver. I don`t have problems with the other appointments.

      It doesn't matter; Mr. Artan is a member of a squad. All the other should declare their solidarity with him and warn FIFA and the USA that they will not officiate at any game in any personal capacity, unless Artan is allowed to join his fellow refs.

      @Fab GX: Yusuke Araki can probably be ruled out: On one hand, he traveled with only a single assistant and is therefore likely intended solely for the role of fourth official. On the other hand, he is already in action as such at the USA - Paraguay match and will not be refereeing a game 4,000 km away 21 hours later. We will probably also only see Campbell-Kirk Kawana-Waugh as the fourth official, perhaps at the match you have in mind.

    Has it ever happened in the history of World Cup that a referee officiated both the opening and final matches? Sampaio seemed like a possible finals candidate to me, assuming this year's finalist will be CONCACAF/CONMEBOL, along with Ramos and Elfath. Should we now consider him only as a possible semifinalist? Am I forgetting other finals candidates?

    Good appointments altogether but on the negative side I don't think I was that much impressed by Sampaio performance at the Qatar WC22 quarter final, he was over the place guess the stakes where really very high and to finish i think the Brazilian will do well in the opener

Because YOU, yes YOU are a guilty accomplice of robbing your fellow referee Omar Artan of the biggest dream any and all football referees can accomplish.
    I hope to never share a football pitch with any of you. I will expose you for what you are. Because sports should UNITE not divide the world.
    For all of you who will still be watching after the Artan issue. The fact that an Iraqi player was separated, isolated, and detained at the airport for over 7 hours. And the troubles the Iran delegation has faced (and will continue to endure). Well done! You're part of the problem. I for one, prefer to be on the right side of history. I'll wait for the 2030 edition.

      This framing is actually a cop out. It was obvious that the US were going to behave like this, and Artan's expulsion probably is consistent with the overall manner that the relevant body deal with Somali entries on a day-to-day basis. One can debate the right and wrongs of that.

      HOWEVER: one can understand the Americans dealing in a severe manner with spectators, even if it is quite unpleasant. The barring of some team members, even if absolutely on the edge of permissible behaviour for a hosting country (and probably beyond it), the rationale at least follows some logic. But, what has happened with Artan -- approved by FIFA themselves (ffs) -- is completely indefensible. It was obvious that a government official, who himself surely percieves soccer as an activity of latines and a white-collar class, would see it in his political and personal interests to say "we will make no exceptions to our rules for a referee". You could see this happening a mile off, and indeed we were given this hilariously American quote from one such person:

      "I don't really care what you do for a living. The law is still the law. If you don't meet the qualifications to ​come into the country, we're not letting you in just because we want you to referee a game."

      The use of the final 'we' rather does stick in the throat. So, it was incumbent on FIFA and Infantino to foresee this happening and ensure that Artan was processed differently; because, clearly, he doesn't constitute a threat to US national security (ffs). Capitals needed: FIFA COMPLETELY, AND SHAMEFULLY, FAILED IN THIS TASK! Their failure falls somewhere between incompetence (the list being announced sooo close to the tournament) and sheer cravenness.

      It should also be said that the reporting of this case has been very poor. Even people who should know better, like Dale Johnson, wrote articles stating that Artan was "the best African referee" - no, Artan was actually no6 for FIFA in the unofficial consideration in Africa, and he was only slated to be a reserve referee. Now, let me state this unequivocally: THIS DOES NOT CHANGE THE PRINCIPLE THAT WHAT HAPPENED IS WRONG, AND SHAMEFUL. Mr Johnson is intelligent enough to know these facts - but it contravened the political viewpoint of his employer. As people with subject knowledge, it is actually incumbent on us to state these facts - even if to omit them coheres to our own (and certainly it coheres to my own) points of view about wider issues.

      Those arguing for collective action by the referees, or that Artan could work solely in Can/Mex, are in cloud-cuckoo land.
      But, finally, let me say it again, the ultimate conclusion from this sad affair should be: shame, shame on you Mr Infantino.

      It has always been transparent that athletes, officials and tourists from several parts of the world will have trouble entering the US. We can't just act surprised now.
      FIFA delegates voted for the North American bid over Morocco in knowledge of the visa issues because the expected revenue is twice as high.

    Second set of assignment: Brazil - Morocco takes the scene here, with Vincic appointed for the game. For me not exactly a big game (still, Brazil very favorite team against a CAF side) but surely something in which a big name from UEFA was expected. I would describe a bigger game than this one a tie like Brazil - UEFA Team.
    To follow, average assignments (of course my opinion!) for Martinez, could have been expected in that game, maybe not the poorest one but still decent, and Valenzuela in AUS - TUR.
    Absolutely sub standard assignment for Ghorbal, with Haiti (among the weakest national teams) involved. However, the fact that there will be Scotland maybe raises a bit the bar (they are crazy about refereeing), but the game should be more than easy.
    In the end, the Egyptian referee has by far more consideration at moment than the Algerian, OK, it's still the first game, but one could have easily predicted Ghorbal for something more, to begin the experience. In the end he is allegedly reported to be the best CAF official in recent times, but at moment in my opinion this was never clearly seen on the pitch, not even in terms of assignments.
    Even worse for Hernandez hernandez: confederation rule has been broken for him, fourth official to Haiti, the plans seem to be clear for the Spanish referee, once he has been called at this tournament...

      I am not sure whether the comparatively unattractive match can actually be considered a disappointment for Mustapha Ghorbal. It is possible that FIFA wants to assign the first matches specifically to particularly "trusted" referees in order to ensure a smooth start to the tournament. His duel between the third and fourth of the group according to the FIFA ranking could also decide in the direct encounter who, via the detour as one of the best eight third-placed teams, advances to the round of 16. In this respect, in my opinion, it is more significant than, for example, BRAHAI. With (Hdz)², I consider it realistic that he replaced Omar Artan at short notice. HAISCO with an African referee would certainly also have been quite suitable for the Somali as the fourth official. If one did not want to make large-scale changes, the Spaniard may have volunteered because he had the most rest days.

      A CONCACAF referee outside their top three makes perfect sense for QAT-SUI. Not a great game, however probably with more attention than others due to the Saturday evening primetime slot in Europe, Africa and Arabia.
      In BRA-MAR one of the big UEFA names as expected.
      Ghorbal's game indeed below expectations for him. Remarkable that CAF gets a second game before AFC gets a first.
      Quite expected to see a CONMEBOL referee in AUS-TÜR, should be a rather open game, so someone of Valenzuela's level seems sensible.

      Indeed interesting to see Hernandez as 4th official.
      It could mean, that Artan was planned initially for this game and the Spanish replaces him.
      It also could mean, that Hernandez only is a support referee.
      Or neither, and it is just a normal appointment without deeper meaning...

      After that game at the Allianz Arena and the way things went after Bayern vs. Real, I wouldn't name Vincic for a close game that should define the first place in Group C. Excuse me, but in my view, FIFA is taking a big risk with this appointment.

      We can mention a contrary example: Kovacs one year ago after a good CL final, he had a nigthmare in the CWC game he officiated.

      You are misreading the importance of the match, Haiti versus Scotland. In terms of the importance on the field, and not about the global acclaim, it’s a far more important game than a Brazil versus a Morocco. Haiti and Scotland both absolutely require a win (ideally by multiple goals), as a draw would be disastrous towards both teams’ prospects. Haiti’s quality is NOT so far below Scotland’s that this is guaranteed to be a non-competitive matchup.

      Remember this is a World Cup where eight of twelve third-place finishers advance. The distinction between the teams number 3 and number 4 in a group, is extremely important. And the goal difference, in that area of the table, is a “big deal”!

    Despite we are just at the very beginning of this World Cup, which I am not really enthusiastic about compared to previous editions, I want to try to make an assessment about the candidates for the latter games in the knockout rounds.

    Obviously, it is always possible that referees who might not seem like candidates for big games in the knockout rounds before the tournament show great performances and are rewarded with a major game. For example, I would not rule out the possibility that younger officials like Falcon or Makhadmeh can make a deep run if they perform well just like Barton in 2022 or Ramos in 2018.

    But looking at the “biggest” names, I believe that Alireza Faghani can be quite certain that he will have a major game in the knockout rounds. Nevertheless, I think that he won’t be the referee in the final. His officiating in the CWC final was very poor and I believe that Colinna and Busacca both are aware that his experience can be very useful but doesn’t prevent another final like Chelsea-Paris. So, I think that they will shield him in the group stage in order to appoint him for a UEFA – CONMEBOL clash later in the tournament (e. g. the possible Argentina – Portugal) but won’t give him the final.
    Regarding the other referees from AFC, I think that aforementioned Makhadmeh and Tantashev are fighting for being the no. 2 behind Faghani. Both should have chances for an appointment in the knockout stage while al-Jassim should not be considered for knockout games after his poor officiating in Croatia-Marocco. But honestly it seems quite likely that his strong passport might give him the possibility to referee in another knockout game.

    Moving on to CAF, I would argue that there are two clear favourites for big appointments, namely Ghorbal and Beida. Imo, both are talented referees and both should get better games than the ones CAF referees deservedly handled in Quatar. Since I don’t know that much about the other referees from CAF (even though Mikael’s brilliant analysis taught me several interesting aspects), I will just say that two referees in the knockout round seems likely for CAF.

    Switching to CONCACAF, I believe that the level of officiating there has improved a lot since Rizzoli took over. All of their referees should be candidates for knockout games in the case of decent performances. However, I am quite certain that only Elfath, Ramos and Barton have chances to officiate the biggest clashes.
    Ramos was rightly criticised for his handling of Boca-Benfica on this blog. Nevertheless, I believe that he can be a very good referee if he decides not to be the personification of leniency. This is going to be his third WC and he already had three knockout games including one semifinal. I would even not rule him out for the final, even though he is clearly not the favourite.
    In my eyes, the favourite is Elfath. He comes from the host nation and is a good referee who definitely improved since the last WC. This is why I believe he will be shielded from difficult games (like Turpin in 2022), so that he can receive the final. But even though such an appointment may seem like a political one, this should not hide the fact that he is an adequate referee for the final.
    Finally, a referee I personally like a lot is Barton. The first match I saw from him was Germany-Japan in Quatar and he impressed me with his technical accuracy which is nothing but outstanding. I think he is too young for the final itself, but I consider him as a good option for a big game between two UEFA teams (e. g. Germany – France). And if this WC goes well for him, he should be the no. 1 candidate for the final in 2030.

      Interestingly, the top three referees in CONMEBOL, namely Wilton Sampaio, Jesus Valenzuela and Facundo Tello have not changed since Qatar, and I think that all of them could officiate the biggest matches at this WC.
      A referee who receives the opener always enjoys FIFA’s trust. Wilton Sampaio is a referee whose style I personally dislike since he does not really care about managing the game imo. Nevertheless, I have to admit that he is able to solve technically challenging matches and is certainly a good referee. That’s why I am quite certain that he will be at least able to achieve a quarterfinal if he doesn’t perform very poorly before. In case of a good performance in the knockout stage, he should always be considered as a possibility for the final.
      Facundo Tello also received one of the opening games. It is quite clear that he will not referee the final (three Argentine final referees in 20 years is too much), but he seems to be a safe bet for the knockout stage. I think that he might be appointed to a big match between two UEFA teams since his style is rather “European”.
      If you ask me, the no. 3 from CONMEBOL behind Sampaio and Tello is Jesus Valenzuela. I believe him to be the personification of FIFA’s vision of refereeing as he is very concentrated on managing (opposite to Sampaio). He performed well in Qatar and I am quite certain that he will go even further this time. I am not sure if he could make it to the final if Elfath and Sampaio both perform badly, but he should have a good chance to achieve at least a quarterfinal.

      Finally, let’s have a look on the UEFA officials. First of all, I want to say that all of them are great referees which are capable of handling even difficult matches at this tournament. So, I believe that all of them have the chance to qualify for the knockout stage with decent performances. Before the tournament, I would argue that the strongest names are Marciniak (obviously), Turpin and Letexier. But again, I think that almost every UEFA official at this tournament has good chances to referee a huge clash. However, at this moment I could imagine that additionally to the names mentioned above Oliver, Makkelie and Mariani (coming from a very strong Conference League final) are candidates for the biggest games.
      Anyway, I don’t think that we are going to see two UEFA referees in a row for the final. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this has not happened in the modern era?

      This is the first time that I write such an analysis, I hope you enjoyed reading it (even though my English is sometimes a bit difficult to understand). Feel free to add, discuss or question aspects. And let’s hope that the referees will have a great World Cup despite all these negatives events!

      CONMEBOL: Sampaio and Valenzuela
      Both can handle the most difficult games in a great manner that suits FIFA! Absolutely top class from both and it will be no surprise to me to see any of them in the final game.

      CONCACAF: Elfath and Ramos
      While I really dislike the Mexican's leniency, FIFA seem to rate him high (as almost all veterans). Elfath seems to be the obvious choice that most likely will be shielded a little bit by appointments strategy and the rest will be in his hands.

      My personal preference between these candidates is:
      1. Valenzuela
      2. Sampaio
      3. Elfath
      4. Ramos

      When it's about the final, we should wait for the real performances on the pitch. But sure there are tendencies even before and talking about them, don't forget Barton, who really did well last year. And if the Egyptian ref performs well again, he might be a candidate, too. I do not believe that we will get a UEFA referee in the final again, and - I am sad to say that - Faghani imo does not really show his old level anymore. In Asia I do not see a candidate already - but let's wait for the real games now and hope for some positive surprises.

    Brazilian here. Sampaio is really bad at refereeing here in South America. Terrible players and emotional control/management. I hope he'll do well.

    I don't like Vincic for the same reason, and this Brazil vs Morocco could be a little bit heated.

      Dear friends, even if I follow the criticism on US government and FIFA and I had good reasons for my last words about that - I really think that we should not work on continuing discussing things in a way that Artan is made a hero. He is a still very promising young referee who was treated completely unfairly and should get a fair compensation, but that's it. There are more possibilities and tournaments lying ahead of him in future. And I hope that he knows that some journalists who pretend to be on his side might try to use him for their own agenda, which would not be in his interest. My advice for him would be to relax, enjoy some TV shows, but then focus on continuing his good work on the pitch.

    Well after 28 years, Scotland will return to the top stage and it’s Mustapha from Algeria who will referee this vital match for both nations (Haiti), and I must say this technically decides 3rd already and could give Scotland a chance at a knockout round for the first time ever, and Haiti a first win ever. So I understand why some might consider this a “poor” or “okish” appointment but for these two countries this is a match that could change lives which isn’t unusual at World Cups, but for me it’s special due to obvious reasons! Good luck Mustapha and I pray all goes well.

      Very good comment. What might look like a game like many others for most of us, means a world to those involved. But that is so in general and when we stand on the pitch the "lower leagues" deserve the same dedication and professionalism as the "high class clashes" do...

      I am trying to look at this issue objectively: Perhaps there really are the alleged latent security concerns with Omar Artan. Content-wise, I can also fundamentally understand the statement that one would not want to see football and national rule-of-law matters mixed. However, at the latest, the flippant comment 'Maybe it's good to just chill, relax.' disqualifies the FIFA president anyway!

      My intention here is just comment about referees but as this topic was raised my opinion that Infantino is a disgrace to football, not only by this tragedy to change WC in their own business balcony but He knows that both in 2010 in South Africa and in 2014 in Brazil, FIFA imposed its will by force a set of absurd conditions, contradicting constitutions and local laws to protect sponsors, corrupt individuals, and criminal partners (guaranteeing entry and protection to some involved even in sex tourism scandals), even demanding the creation of specific laws and the repeal of others so that the tournament could take place. He is either a liar or has forgotten what this corrupt entity has already done to the countries that hosted the World Cup. The problem is that in its power struggles with Trump's USA, it has become a disqualified puppet.

    - CONMEBOL: Claus more efficient and reliable than Sampaio in discipline, fouls appointments, clear signaling and match control. Tello is a great referee but I dont believe in other argentinean in finals
    - UEFA: Turpin as reward by your exceptional performance in 2022 where probably he would was in final unless France also not be. Or Makkelie due your recent great performances.

    So the trend of not appointing AFC referees continues since the end of MD2 in 2022... (with the exception of the 3rd place game, I know)
    On contrary, third game already for CAF.

    Besides that, the Sunday appointments are quite normal and adequate for the referee's levels.

    Worth pointing out that the 4th officials apparently don't stay at one venue (but at least in the same region for now).

    Regular assignments for Elfath, Oliver and Falcon.
    While once again, I must underline that after Haiti, CAF gets Curaçao as well, very predictable assignments, always CAF referees for the weakest (on paper) teams. Nevertheless, three appointments for African referees and zero for Asian is remarkable.
    But maybe Faghani will start directly in a top game...
    Confederations (unwritten) rule always kept, including fourth officials, unless Hernandez Hernandez in that game.

    Ivory Coast vs Ecuador ( Michael Oliver) This is far from an easy assignment for Michael Oliver. It promises to be a physical contest with plenty of challenges and potentially several cards. Both teams play with passion and intensity with less ball playing more on physical contact.
    Either A top class performance from Oliver or disaster one. This is most difficult fixture of the first round.

      Probably because some of the VARs who are planned for Saturday are still working tonight. So they are waiting for them to complete their first game before officially assigning the next one.
      E.g. Ashour might be planned as VAR for Ghorbal or Gallo as part of a CONMEBOL VAR trio for Valenzuela (just as ideas).

    Mariani: good for Uruguay, but clearly Saudi Arabia shows that he is below other UEFA referees, and that's fair for now as first assignment.
    The Jordan referee in Charge of Cape Verde, another team to add to the list with Haiti and Curaçao (personal opinion, of course).
    It's the AFC refereeing debut, the reputation is not that high as we can see so far, definitely CAF better at moment.
    A pleasure for me to see Abatti, I liked him in previous FIFA tournaments, and maybe it's not an exaggeration to say that he could handle a better tournament than the countryman.
    It's a good clash, European team against one of the strongest CAF representatives.
    And then Ramos, experienced referee for FIFA, one can dislike him but he has long experience at moment and he comes from a host country: he is there not for NZL but for IRN.
    In my opinion this was a specific choice to give something more to Iran, otherwise a less experienced referee from another confederation could have been possible.

    I was expecting a UEFA referee in Iran vs New Zeeland. There are many referees and few available games for them, while I expect that almost all of them will have at least 2 games. This was a suitable game for many names.

      If you wanted to assign UEFA referees exclusively to purely non-UEFA matches, you would have to give them - with only one exception - all of them! In practice, however, FIFA also uses them for purely UEFA duels and, conversely, 'minor' non-UEFA referees for 'minor' non-UEFA matches. Iran vs. New Zealand, for example, would have been such a match where you could have expected a lower-profile referee than César Ramos.

    Guzman for Valenzuela seems a bit strange, because she already works tonight and there would be Soto (and other CONMEBOL VARs) also available. Also Fu there as only non-Hispanic seems unneccessary.
    Dankert for Vincic could be expected after some CL appointments together.
    Pacheco and Alshehri are logical appointments due to the language.
