  1. Where are Georgians, Kruashvili?

  2. Mariani won a very important match after a terrible performance in the CL qualifiers. There are no penalties for officials from Italy, Slovenia and Spain. If Mariani happened to be from Bulgaria or Romania, his career would be over after that embarrassment in the CL qualifiers.

    1. Sorry but what a joke to see Mariani again with a A league match after his Lyon’s infamous performance…

  3. Mariani is back on the scene after a disastrous Champions League playoff match. As a reward, he's been assigned to another big match... 🤣

  4. Yesterday, a Danish friend in this blog said that Danish referees haven't been assigned to any international matches for 123 games :) and I mentioned that I really like Mikkel Redder. I'm glad he has been assigned for the first time in the NL :) Congrats

    1. Very happy for Mikkel, he's a lovely person and a solid referee. However also typical for a Danish appointment that it's a Nations League D Match of the WEAK :-)

  5. I recommend everyone to watch the
Olympique Lyon vs Fenerbahce Sk UCL playoff match. Many people here wrote the same thing: that it was one of the worst Champions League referee performances in history. About 70% of the decisions Mariani made on the pitch were wrong. There were many wrong fouls, cards, a penalty not given, a disallowed goal,
and he left the pitch with his team during the massive fight between the two teams at the end of the game. And as a gift, he is assigned to this week's biggest match. Nobody talk to me about justice. The tolerance shown to Mariani is not shown to other referees..

  6. So in one set we have almost all the names we mentioned yesterday, about the referees who were still missing.
Now I think only Sanchez Martinez and Schaerer remain, but very likely they are on the next two sets.

    1. From an Austrian perspective, I would add that I still miss seeing our number one referee, Sebastian Gishamer, among the appointments announced so far, and I would probably have expected Stefan Ebner rather than Christian-Petru Ciochirca. As things stand, I find the appointments given to the two Austrian referees selected so far, Julian Weinberger and Christian-Petru Ciochirca, in Leagues C and D respectively, about as disappointing as the apparent underrepresentation of Danish referees.

That said, as I have already pointed out, I would wait until the appointments for the first four matchdays have been published in full before drawing any conclusions. Most referees are likely to receive exactly one match during that period, and from today's perspective, 5 and 6 October remain possible appointment dates as well.

    2. Sanchez probably can't get a league A game now, because FRA or ITA would immediately repeat a Spanish referee and that is normally avoided - and ESP is in the other remaining group.
So if Kovacs and Lambrechts are indeed unavailable, we only have Schärer remaining, so probably there will be more repetitions from MD1/2. Nyberg might be a good option.
Especially ENG-CZE could also go to a First Group referee. Sylwestrzak would be the first idea - but some chances for Gishamer as well, I think.

    3. Chefren, although I have tremendous respect for what you and the blog have reached, given the amount of coverage Mariani’s infamous last game had, it is hard to understand you not saying a word about it. Doesn’t seem like you to ignore the incident just because he is italian. I’m sure you already had time and interest to do a deep dive on that game. Given your knowledge, I think the blog would gain a lot with your contribution on one of the top subjects in Elite refereeing at the moment.

  7. It is truly excellent that Kovács continues to be excluded from officiating matches due to his declining performance and his tendency to frequently issue cards—actions that spoil major matches, especially high-profile clashes between national teams. I hope he is not appointed to officiate any games in this tournament, as his excessive strictness ruins big matches between national teams.

  8. 🚨 🚨 Breaking News
Following the arrest of Turkish Central Refereeing Committee (MHK) Chairman Ferhat Gündoğdu and 6 MHK members,

Turkish Süper Lig referee Yasin Kol has been detained!
The alleged charges against Yasin Kol include:
    Abuse and misuse of office.
Participation in the forgery of documents.
    Illegal betting..

Note: Yasin Kol officiated last season's high-profile derbies, including both Fenerbahçe vs. Galatasaray matches, Fenerbahçe vs. Beşiktaş, and Beşiktaş vs. Galatasaray

  9. Eerste Divisie: Helmond Sport - Heracles Almelo
RC decision by Martin van den Kerkhof
    https://x.com/ESPNnl/status/2106105050464473366?s=20

It is a very difficult situation. While it looks like a reckless, clumsy challenge made with considerable momentum, does it truly pose a threat to the opponent's health? The situation worsened when the player in possession jumped forward with both legs in an attempt to shield the ball.

    How do you analyze this?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Please! Can someone help me to analyze the decision of handball BIH-SWE in minute 17. The ball is coming from the hand of defender down to the tumb of the attacker as scores. Yes I know the rules about the attacker as scores but:
    1. Is this handball as should be punished, no impact, no changing of direction.
    2. Ball coming from the hand of the defender?
    I cant leave the situation!

  11. According to audio recordings from an investigation file, Turkish Central Referee Board (MHK) Chairman Ferhat Gündogdu threatened FIFA assistant referee Kerem Ersoy (who was assistant referee at UEFA Euro 2024):
Gündoğdu: "You are a fucking piece of shit. I am giving you one last chance. Do not speak about the MHK anywhere ever again."
"Either resign and quit refereeing, or act like a man."
"You will lose your refereeing career…

    crazy!😟

  13. Danny Makkelie, István Kovács, João Pinheiro, Sandro Schärer, Damian Sylwestrak, Morten Krogh, Jakob Kehlet, John Brooks, Jérôme Brisard and Tamás Bognár were the 10 UEFA Elite and Category 1 referees who did not receive an appointment during this international window. The first four are Elite referees, while the other six are Category 1 referees.

Makkelie and Pinheiro were unavailable because they were involved in the Gulf Cup, while Kovács had personal matters to deal with. Jakob Kehlet and Tamás Bognár have not received UEFA appointments for quite some time due to their age. As for the other four Category 1 referees and Sandro Schärer, it is still unclear why they were not appointed.

    1. As for Schaerer you can maybe mention the FIFA assignment, but well, he could have appeared in a Nations League game.
Sylwestrak officiated the famous U20 final, just a few days before the start of the very long list of UEFA games, maybe Rosetti didn't like his performance but we can't know.
Rather worrying about Danish names and more generally the refereeing from that country, here definitely no arguments for trying to understand, but this was already discussed on the blog.
For Hungary, Tamás Bognár now seen as VAR, but they never found a vey reliable name after Kassai retirement.
Brooks doesn't seem to have solved his issues, as very often skips assignments, but differently from other referees.
As said about Kovacs, one could easily imagine he had a game and then he was replaced by another referee.
Meanwhile in Under 21 his brother has been appointed.

    2. Could it be that some of the referees we've been missing so far for no apparent reason may have failed their fitness tests, Laws of the Game exams, or other assessments?

      Delete
  14. I thought this was long a thing of the past, at least among UEFA member associations, but yesterday referee Ravan Hamzazade (AZE) proved otherwise: In the friendly match between Turan Tovuz and Fenerbahçe, he sent off a Fenerbahçe player in the 33rd minute with a red card after a clear act of violence (kicking an opponent in the legs). After fierce protests, Fenerbahçe was then allowed to continue the game with 11 players (!!!!
). This incident should be investigated and sanctioned by the Azerbaijan Football Federation. Referees like this have no place in officiating and should be removed from the roster, as they are a disgrace to their colleagues.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkmIJhkIiSU

@Chefren: What do you think would happen to a referee like that in Italy?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A similar situation happened to Klassen in 2025. (ajax) After receiving a red card in a friendly match, he continued to play by the joint decision of both teams. After all, it is just a friendly match, and many similar situations have happened before.
The Portuguese player Leao punched his opponent in a friendly match last year, but he didn't receive any punishment and played in the World Cup

      Delete
    2. Now I've even found an even better video where, on the one hand, you can see the lengthy discussion, and on the other hand, you can clearly see that Fenerbahçe continued playing with 10 field players.

    3. It doesn't surprise me at all. This kind of behavior is very common in Italy during friendlies, especially summer ones.
I have heard similar stories where teams ask to replace a player and the referee agrees. Until there are strict guidelines from the federations, referees will unfortunately always be forced to stay at clubs' demands. This behavior in friendlies shows us how hard is for a referee to be accepted today.

      Delete
  15. Lambrechts back from the injury gets directly a game like Croatia - Spain, we know this couldn't happen for a CL game. Still, Nations League assignments are handled in a certain way by committee.
Good for the Belgian that he is back, though.
And Sanchez Martinez with a game as expected, but in the very last set of games. Must be aware of Scotland game, that can turn into a very challenging one. About the reputation of Spanish referee, it's once again interesting to observe that there are many factors to consider.
On a side, very important game and we know that Scotland matches becomes extremely challenging, on the other side, surely as Spanish Elite referee he could get more. In the end, when a big federation doesn't find very top referees, their Elite names in UEFA are calibrated based on the matches they are assigned to referee.

  16. Chefren. What are your thoughts on the recent scandals in Turkish football ? The president of Turkey's Central Referee Board Ferhat Gündoğdu and 6 members, along with 4 Süper Lig referees, have been arrested. Do you think Anthony Taylor will continue in his role

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Honestly, I don't have any particular opinion. I feel bad for the environment, which has certainly been in trouble for years now. If we want to reflect from the perspective of recent international refereeing, Çakır was very lucky to "last that long," finding a level of stability that is obviously not guaranteed, given recent times. On the other hand, it's an issue for Meler, who has to pay this toll in terms of his nationality. Building for the future of Turkish refereeing at an international level currently seems impossible.
If Taylor decides to continue, he will do so for the good of Turkish refereeing.
However, it is worth noting that a Turkish referee has been assigned to the Nations League again for Tuesday, in my opinion, there are definitely frequent contacts between Taylor and Rosetti, to understand the full extent of the things.

  17. No sign of Brooks anywhere this international break as far as I can tell.

  18. First application in UEFA games, if I'm not wrong, of a VAR intervention for removing a second YC, leading to a RC.
Portuguese referee called at OFR during Azerbaijan - Lithuania.
Final decision: second yellow card removed and yellow card for simulation to opponent.
The tackle by AZE player existed, but opponent rather used it to fall. Correct decision for me.
