Another Spanish referee has been assigned to an Istanbul team's home match. Rosetti always seems to choose either a Spanish or an Italian referee. I really wonder why..
ReplyDelete+ Additionally, Cuadra, who is appointed as the VAR referee, was a VAR referee in Tukish Süper Lig matches played by Turkey's big clubs a few weeks ago..
DeleteIt will be interesting to observe whether Javier Alberola Rojas can emulate Sven Jablonski’s rapid rise last season ...
ReplyDeletePossible last step before promotion for Delajod
ReplyDeleteManagement of Spanish referees: debut for Alberola, it's time for him after a few Europa League group stage games. One can agree that he can raise the level of Spanish officiating.
ReplyDeleteThen, De Burgos is selected again, in this case clearly over Hernandez Hernandez afer his CL play off, and so the referee from Basque Country gets his second overall appearance, after having officiated at Atalanta's home one year ago. Nevertheless, I don't consider him as referee at level for CL games, or at least, better than the other Spanish who don't get games.
It's not a case, and I answer to HB2300, that De Burgos will officiate again Slavia Praha, he did the same one year ago in Bergamo.
So the choice is made based on that, to explain committee's point of view, they think it's a rather expected win by home-side.
As for Sabah, after their first win in CL, they are very, very relaxed and it's the best team for allowing referees at their debut.
Sanchez Martinez sent to Naples, at moment definitely a secondary game, but still with the Italian team, and so a certain experience with a referee coming from a major country. Similar speech can be made for Schaerer, as we discussed very likely back from a small injury, he gets Roma. But they wouldn't have appointed a big name like the Swiss, without an Italian team, even more against an opponent like Slovan Bratislava. It's absoltuely very clear how Rosetti thinks, saving all potential controversies by appointing a more experienced referee than the needed for Italian teams.
About the rest, it's a regular one for Marciniak, again at Liverpool's hom after the famous replacement in KO stage.
Oliver full of big games, since it's hard to officiate the CL final for him, given English teams, this is the management. Impressive.
So the Europa League assignment was just something more, one couldn't have planned another appearance on this week.
Second game for Siebert as well, after last week's performance in Villarreal. It was liked by Rosetti, we can say.
However, the point of criticism can be that with so many options, having already some referees with two games in less than a week could be too much, but that's how Rosetti works.
Gozubuyuk with a second appearance in CL, after MD1, but appointment not reported so far by KNVB site. That's strange, since they alwas report assignments in al circumstances, one should think when they don't do that (it was also guessed by a reaer some days ago here), we should then think about a late choice or replacement.
Nevertheless, we have to wait to know whether Makkelie will appear on Wednesday's set of games to make his first appearance.
Kovacs seems back to officiate as well, I have read about some controversy in his Romanian domestic game, but I think he will not get a big one in CL, either a secondary game or Europa League.
Last but not least: Velasco with Delajod, it seems clear they want the French to replace the retired Bastien as third French Elite referee.
However, on paper, he is given a too easy game for being observed by a committee member in Manchester...
As for the Spanish referees, they didn’t get a single Champions League appointment last round, but there are three of them this time. Their number one, Alejandro Hernández, is yet to make his Champions League debut this season, so I reckon he could be in line for a game in Munich tomorrow.
DeleteAs for Oliver, he was in France for a Europa League game on Thursday, is refereeing in the Premier League today, and is back in France next Tuesday. That’s quite a busy schedule, with not much of a break in between!
Given the performances of Bodo, I think, that's actually a good game for Sanchez, clearly better than Schärer's appointment.
DeleteThe game for de Burgos seems more open to me, I had rather expected an Elite referee there, also given the atmosphere in Istanbul.
Hernandez surely to be expected on Wednesday, also given the AVAR appointment of del Cerro Grande. Not sure about Munich, maybe the game in Como would be more fitting.
And yes, Oliver's schedule really seems unreasonable. I don't know, why he had to get Europa League, if he was considered for the CL game on Tuesday.
Inter vs shakhtar donest also may be officiate spanish referee or portuguese my opinion may portuguese
ReplyDeleteAlso i see here change of del cero grande after wrong penalty with inter
Yes, but a bit strange that Martins is working with Sanchez. If a Portuguese is appointed on Wednesday, you would have expected Martins there.
DeleteI have that feeling that will be spanish or portuguese in milan
DeleteI think The reason that is not appointed grande with sanchez is not that no portuguese referee in wednesday but i think the mistake he made inter vs club with out any intervention
Deletei don't know if you've noticed, but Serdar Gözübüyük keeps getting assigned to matches of the exact same difficulty level. When are we finally going to see him in a big match? The types of games he's been getting for years are always the same level.
ReplyDeleteIt seems as though the Dutch referee is dealing with physical issues or perhaps something else 'off the pitch,' as his career progression appears to have hit a standstill.
DeleteHow did you come to such a conclusion? Because he is constantly being assigned to Champions League matches... If he had physical or mental issues, he wouldn't be assigned to any Champions League matches.
DeleteI sad physical issues because, if I'm not mistaken, he has failed a UEFA fitness test at least once.
DeleteI didn't mean mental issues or anything specific like that, just that his career hasn't lived up to expectations. He has completely plateaued with no progress (look at his last three years).
Spain has carried the day for this first set of appointments.
ReplyDeleteMichael Oliver with a repeat of last year's fixture: PSG Vs Barcelona.
I pray he comes out unscathed
Looking at the referee assignments so far, if it will be a final without any english teams, Oliver seems almost predestined to referee it.
ReplyDeleteRojas continues his rise through the UEFA ranks, and I believe he will very soon become Spain's number one referee.
Delajod is the next French name moving up, climbing to the number three spot behind Turpin and Letexier. The French Football Federation deserves praise for achieving the best results in promoting successful young referees.
As for the rest, the assignments seem perfectly logical. Any claims that only certain referees officiate specific teams seem somewhat baseless to me.
Honestly, it's hard to believe that Hernandez Hernandez will appear in Champions League, after three Spanish referee on Tuesday, even more unlikely to get a game like Bayern - Arsenal (but then of course everything is possible...).
ReplyDeleteI think he could be in Europa League.
Also, not intervening in Inter - Brugge was a fully correct choice, not a mistake, penalty by Saggi supportable / correct decision.
A Portuguese name for Wednesday is Godinho, he could get again Inter at home after last years' appearance in Inter - Kairat.
Looking at VAR/AVAR appointments:
ReplyDelete- Marciniak/Kwiatkowski still strictly avoided on UEFA level (happened at the WC though). After VARs from other countries, now it's Lasyk's turn.
- van Driessche with Delajod could indicate another French referee with Brisard on Wednesday - maybe Letexier in Munich
- it also means, probably no game for Lambrechts again
- Brand and Schröder could indicate another game for Zwayer and/or Stieler; a third game for Jablonski would be extreme
- Dingert could work with Eskas or Meler again
- We can also expect at least one Italian with Chiffi, but Mariani, Massa and Sozza are all possible
- Attwell could mean that Kavanagh works again
- Higler without van Boekel for the first time in a while. Maybe it indicates no game for van Boekel on Wednesday
- Martins (rather no Portuguese) and del Cerro Grande (probably Hernandez) already discussed above
For me if joao pinheiro is not appointed inter vs shakhtar or any match for me it is some thing impossible or abnormal
DeleteSpanish referees were appointed for Fenerbahçe’s last two home matches in the Champions League. Just a few weeks ago, Manzano officiated the Fenerbahçe-Roma match. To me, these appointments feel like taking the easy way out. Earlier this season, Burgos was assigned to Beşiktaş’s home match as well.
ReplyDeleteReferees from countries other than Italy and Spain should also be appointed to Istanbul teams' home matches. The atmosphere in those stadiums is unlike anywhere else, and other referees deserve to experience it too. However, UEFA clearly takes zero risks and keeps relying on the same countries..
These are the referee appointments for just the last two seasons.
DeleteLet's call it a coincidence
Galatasaray
• Galatasaray vs. Barcelona — Marco Guida (Italy)
• Galatasaray vs. Liverpool — Jesús Gil Manzano (Spain)
• Galatasaray vs. Union SG — José María Sanchez Martinez (Spain)
• Galatasaray vs. Zalgiris — Marco Guida (Italy)
Fenerbahçe
• Fenerbahçe vs. Slavia Prague - Ricardo de
Burgos Bengoetxea (Spain)
• Fenerbahçe vs. Roma - Jesús Gil Manzano (Spain)
• Fenerbahçe vs. Rangers — Alejandro Hernández
Hernandez (Spain)
• Fenerbahçe vs. Ferencvaros — Ricardo de Burgos
Bengoetxea (Spain)
• Fenerbahçe vs. Lille — José María Sanchez
Martinez (Spain)
• Fenerbahçe vs. Lyon — Simone Sozza (Italy)
Beşiktaş 2026/27
• Beşiktaş vs. Marseille — Andrea Colombo (Italy)
• Beşiktaş vs. Midtjylland — Ricardo de Burgos
Bengoetxea (Spain)
Because the playing structure of Turkish teams is aimed at deceiving the referee (similar to Spanish local football).
DeleteOrsato guidelines are starting to annoy me… clear foul prior to Como’s first game, not whistled by Di Bello.. this is not how football is supposed to be
ReplyDeleteWith Alberola Rojas making his debut that means 6 spanish referees in the CL since the start of last season. Which I believe is 2 more than anyone else. Although the 3 in the elite list haven't always impressed recently.....
ReplyDeleteI just looking NOT-ARS, referee Oliver. Tuesday big CL-match PSG-BARCA. It is easy to referee matches, preparation enough?
ReplyDeleteOliver is not a robot, he's a human. On Thursday he was in france, now in Nottingham, and tomorrow he will travel to Paris. It's not fair to put such a pressure on a referee..
DeleteAs for Oliver, the Europa League appointment could have been avoided.
ReplyDeleteOr he could have skipped the domestic one.
You can see, with this management by Rosetti, that is very different from old times (both Rosetti's first times and especially Collina's last times), it's hard to "give breath" to a referee, called to officiate such big games, in a few days.
But with other referees that UEFA could have used in one of the two games for which Oliver is involved, it's clear that they don't care about that.
Quantity before quality, very often for Rosetti quality is not an issue.
It seems Oliver is getting more rests domestically including the coming week of fixtures he would have only refereed in one of the 3 weeks. This wouldn't have happened previously but I wonder is webb looking at it to get the best out of him he needs to really manage his matches
DeleteRegarding Spanish referees, I don't how much they're taking into account a long-term matter. Let's assume that Spain is gonna have at least 3 Elite referees if nothing really serious happens. Hdez-Hdez is 44, Sánchez Martínez 43, and Gil Manzano -the weakest one- 42. Now Spain's ageing situation has changed, and retirement can come after 45 but before 50. Let's put 47 as an average. That means that in four/five years we could see three other Spanish Elites.
ReplyDeleteMartínez Munuera is out of the race because of being already 43-44. We have De Burgos (39-40) and Alberola, who is considerably younger.
Do they want to push Alberola first? I can understand that he has great potential (though I find De Burgos a much better referee than he is often considered in this blog), but you're closing the door to De Burgos (he could be 43-44 at the next retirement; it would be nonsense) without having two other solid candidates after them (Busquets Ferrer is not taking off, García Verdura is starting his international path in January...)
Then, the most logical solution is to promote De Burgos first, maybe coexisting with the other three for a season, and then Alberola, with still 10 years of career ahead, and finally a third candidate that should show much more in the upcoming years. (Or both at the same time) So, maybe so many Turkish appointments for De Burgos mean more than a simple UCL group match. I think he's still the first in the race.
Rojas is the favourite for Clasico.
ReplyDeleteSánchez Martínez. Too risky at this point to assign Alberola with so many possibilities ahead
Deleteseems some are denying that Alberola Rojas is the favourite ... Very likely that Sanchez Martinez will get it ....
DeleteBreaking 🚨
ReplyDeleteAnthony Taylor has been appointed as the chairman of the Central Referee Board of the Turkish Football Federation.
The Turkish Football Federation announced the decisions taken after the meeting held in Riva today.
The TFF announced that Anthony Taylor has been appointed to the chairmanship of the Central Referee Board, which became vacant after Ferhat Gündoğdu following his arrest. Anthony Taylor became the new chairman of the MHK.
+ Alan Snoddy, Igor Radojicic and Barış Şimşek, have been appointed as MHK members.
DeleteAnthony Taylor came to the world's most chaotic football environment as an director of elite refereeing to the committee chairman in just two months.. Unbelievable 😂
DeleteDe Burgos fails to award Slavia a clear corner....which then results in a Slavia goal after the goal kick..
ReplyDelete19” clear penalty missed.. FEN-SLA
ReplyDeletehttps://streama.in/lUw9ZlcdBf1YvMN/watch
DeleteWell, at least the famous Basque referee was very convinced about his call. Very clear gestures, he would have never whistled it. Very hard for VAR to join in such assessment, given the firmness of the referee.
DeleteSo, in your opinion, should it have been a penalty?
DeleteNo, I'm not saying that. Strong arguments to whistle penalty.
DeleteDefender made a clear impact to the atacker. IMO penalty.
DeleteI think he would whistle a penalty if he was in a better position. His positioning was very bad in this situation.
What about VAR intervention? Was it necessary?
Burgos is terrible.
ReplyDeleteWrong yellow to skriniar
ReplyDeleteWow,one of weaker performances of De Burgos in a long time, irritating both teams equally.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen such a terrible referee performance in a long time. Burgos is having a disastrous game.
ReplyDeleteNo problems for Alberola Rojas on his debut. AR2 with two good on-field decisions to disallow Sabah goal in first half and allow Dortmund goal in second half.
ReplyDeleteAlberola Rojas with a good performance in a normal difficulty game. The biggest calls were FK + YC to SAB #3 (foul outside the penalty area and SPA due to another defender) in 22' and disallowed Sabah's goal for tight offside in 29' (AR2).
ReplyDeleteAll cards given to Sabah were correct, (22' SPA, 48' SPA (could've been avoided with a more lenient approach), 57' for cynical SPA kick, 89' for dissent), however DOR #24 was on the verge of caution for persistent infringing the LotG (17', 19', 38', 71') and DOR #21 could've been cautioned for reckless challenge (78').
Good lost time compensation in general (1' and 2', respectively) but not adding further half a minute for Dortmund's substitution during the second half's additional time was suboptimal.
The 22' incident:
Deletehttps://streama.in/0hSxdMFcOXfFzYM/watch
And one should mention a very high level of both assistant referees in this game regarding offside/onside decisions!
DeleteYes. Performance was good.
DeleteBut AR1 with 1 cheap flag around 80’ …
The 22’ incident
DeleteIMO Rojas missed RC in this situation because it was DOGSO
Very good match by Arberola Rojas in his his debut in a normal game.
DeleteRemember when games used to kick off on time
ReplyDeleteMarciniak made it to Anfield in one piece!!
ReplyDeleteWrong yellow for joao cancelo he was not deserve yellow my opinion
ReplyDeleteI think that after today, it’s become clear to the committee who should be the next Spanish elite-level referee. Burgos isn’t at the level required for Champions League matches.
ReplyDeleteFantasy call from Oliver in Paris, about Doue foul.
ReplyDeleteMissed foul and potential YC for a foul on Olmo ? I was focus on the contact and clearly tackle on the ankle but can’t tell if this is a foul.
ReplyDeleteI‘m really not trying to overreact, but CLEAR missed RC by Oliver… Studs to face!
ReplyDeleteI clearly disagree. It's Pacho's responsability trying to play the ball with the head near to the ground. Fermin tries to play the ball and can't predict that Pacho's head is there.
Deletehttps://streama.in/tQ9q1FygWOWYgOR/watch
DeleteAh lads come on red card it's a footballing action the attacker is on the grand trying to take a shot the defender is in with a diving header. Not every contact is a red card
DeleteThat is never a red card. It should have been an indirect free kick for Barcelona, as the PSG player lowered his head close to the ground.
Delete100% right. This is never a red card. This is also not an indirect freekick for Barcelona. Sorry. NO WAY.
DeleteDirect Freekick for PSG is a smart and totally correct / accepted decision. That’s it.
By the way Oliver as GOOD as always…!
I love this protection some referees provide.
DeleteAll that’s missing is for them to say that the PSG player *must* be shown a yellow card.
Defender gets there first, attacker tries to play ball. Careless, yes. Reckless, I don't think so. SFP no way
DeleteCareless? No way. Reckless? At least, YC must be given. SFP? Possible but in this situation too harsh.
DeleteAccording to IFAB, playing in a dangerous manner is any action that, while trying to play the ball, threatens injury to someone—including the player themself. This also includes preventing a nearby opponent from playing the ball for fear of injury.
DeleteIf a defender plays in a dangerous manner inside their own penalty area—for example, by stooping too low to head the ball near an opponent’s foot—the opposing team is awarded an indirect free kick. If the offence occurs inside the goal area, the kick is taken from the nearest point on the goal-area line parallel to the goal line.
Schaerer penalty call: https://streama.in/fByFQvU6mkRFDyz/watch
ReplyDeleteGozuyubuk red card for SFP:
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.link/v/0922040c
The referee was behind the challenge so he could see the point of contact.
Excellent decision
DeleteGood decision. Actually it’s quite “rare” to see him pulling a RC without VAR input. I hope he will also show that skill in Eredivisie games from now on.
DeleteWell spotted by Gözübüyük. I have the impression that he has improved a lot in the last two years and is much more confident in his decisions
Deletewrong link
ReplyDeleteSiebert forces a PSV doctor to enter the pitch, even though the PSV player eventually did't want any treatment. Siebert really jelled to the PSV doctor—very remarkable. '86
ReplyDeleteVery positive set of games, no OFRs (unless I missed something), good officiating by almost everyone.
ReplyDeleteCurious to see about De Burgos, to understand more about the performance.
No problem for Delajod in Manchester. But that wasn't a game in which to appoint a committee member, as I said two days ago.
What do you think about this situation?
Deletehttps://streama.in/0hSxdMFcOXfFzYM/watch
Was the VAR call necessary?
De Burgos Bengoetxea
DeleteThe decent level of control was assured by the Spaniard but his usual chaotic / overenthusiastic style is the opposite to current expectations. He should be praised for the ease in reaching players but the manner in which he communicates with them is really weird.
There were two penalty appeals, both waved away: 19' - holding, could have been given but, imo, not mandatory as the ball was cleared by another player and the shirt pulling was smartly used by attacker; 71' alleged charging against Lukaku, not enough. In both cases De Burgos was very clear in his gestures, letting players know that in no way there was an offence. It's something Rosetti should be very satisfied with (decision made by the referee), although on the other hand it's risky - in case of mistake in assessment you could end up as a clown.
Disciplinary control was okay overall:
- two tactical offences rightly deemed not enough for an opening YC (6', 13')
- play-on after potential illegal use of arm by FEN #3 and FK-only after tactical offence by SLA #16 (28')
- good opening YC to FEN #91 for SPA (31')
- play-on after late challenge by FEN #91 but even if whistled no (2)YC would be correct as he didn't want to hurt an opponent and even did everything to minimize the contact
- well spotted handball outside the penalty area but the FK is executed too far from the penalty area (35')
- good warning to SLA #6 after late challenge from behind (and previous foul in 16') (38')
- dubious YC to FEN #37 for follow-through step on ankle (49')
- biggest mistake of the game: missed holding by FEN #27 that should result in a YC (55')
- another play-on call after action by FEN #27 ends up in an understandable dissenting behaviour from Slavia's bench, YC to coach (59')
- YC SLA #30 for SPA holding; mandatory but unlucky moment of the game (60')
- play-on after little push by Lukaku leading to a dangerous attack (63')
- good advantage after tackle by FEN #91 - no replay but I guess it was (very) close to 2YC (64')
- possible YC FEN #11 for reckless challenge (66')
- correct YC FEN #5 for reckless SPA tackle but terrible card showing procedure (88')
In my opinion, this performance was far from disaster described above but 55' should have been avoided.
Thanks for this report! A nice one to read.
DeleteIf possible, I will add some clips to follow!
@Whistle2 YC for SPA is supportable due to the other defender, but my feeling about the incident was red card. RC for DOGSO would have been supported by VAR as well, for me being a better decision.
DeleteHere the other penalty area incident in 71', with the previous one having been already posted above in the discussion:
Deletehttps://streamin.link/v/fdc16a95
Once again, I must say excellent De Burgos in regards of body language and making clear that he took a decision, this aspect must be very liked by UEFA. However, in the first case, one can discuss about the opportunity to give penalty, then in this second incident I think all can agree it's OK to play on.
The clip of the mistake in 55':
https://streamin.link/v/297c6155
Missed indeed a very clear YC.
As for De Burgos, I think he got it completely wrong with that penalty incident, involving the shoulder charge on the Fenerbahçe player.
DeleteWhen there’s no intent to play the ball, whether it's a push or a pull, it’s a foul—and a foul inside the box is a penalty.
Going beyond the rulebook, am I the only one who sees that Slavia player's action as completely unacceptable? If these kinds of challenges go unpunished, can you imagine what would happen during every corner, free kick, or cross into the box?
Easy game for Marciniak. 2 YCs, little more, always alert
ReplyDeleteDespite the match being relatively easy at Anfield, Marciniak is starting to return to his usual level. Another good performance.
ReplyDeleteWatched the entire Stuttgart–Atletico game and Gozubuyuk was very good in what was a difficult match to referee. He looked confident, stayed in control and managed the game very well. All sanctions were justified, and the red card was an excellent decision. Dangerous action. His decisions were consistent from start to finish. A very strong refereeing performance overall.
ReplyDeleteClear offside by Ferran Torres before the corner that L. Hernandez headed in to score. The assistant was in a very bad position…
ReplyDeletehttps://imgur.com/6qYNpgH
DeleteHow can we be sure that was clear offside? With this angle we can just doubt about it nothing more. Do you have video or photo from offside camera? I guess this was fast counter attack?
DeleteWatching this scereenshot, one can't say it was offside, possible that attacker was in line with the ball. You should report the classic camera to discuss about offside.
Deletehad that feeling during live play and on the first slow-motion replay, but I can't confirm it.
DeleteMaybe with VAR a bit of the shoulder might be off, but saying it's a "clear offside" is a ridiculous take, most (if not all) of his body is behind the line of the ball.
DeleteOf course, bad positioning of AR. But discussion should be about player off side, not only about off side position. Did attacker try to play the ball or to have any influence on defender? For me not clear situation about off side position, no VAR stuff, and therefore significant mistake of AR because he wasn't on the line with the ball or the second last defender.
DeleteWhat are you talking about? The player offside played the ball afterwards so absolutely no discussion there. Furthermore, it led „only“ to a corner kick, so no chance for VAR to intervene.
DeleteI don't think I've seen any comments on Sánchez Martínez in NAP-BODO: in my opinion, it wasn't a particularly brilliant performance.
ReplyDeleteExcellent from an athletic standpoint, he showed indecisiveness and conflicting judgments on a technical level, sometimes penalizing simple contact and other times failing to sanction extremely blatant holding (characteristic of a SPA, which, strangely enough, was not even detected by the AR).
This lack of consistency often led to uncertainty among the players as to whether or not to expect the whistle.
The disciplinary assessments were more uniform, though overly inclined towards tolerance.
Honestly, a below-average performance for an Élite Ref.
