Osmers with second CL appointment
ReplyDeleteNext game for Jablonski: Como - Man Utd
ReplyDeleteAfter that playoff fiasco, Mariani has still not received a match appointment in Champions league... Jablonski, on the other hand, makes it three in a row
ReplyDeleteElite referees who had no matches until MD 3:
ReplyDelete- Erik Lambrechts (BEL)
- Alejandro Hernández (ESP)
- Orel Grinfeld (ISR)
- Maurizio Mariani (ITA)
- Danny Makkelie (NED)
- João Pinheiro (POR)
- Srđan Jovanović (SRB)
"Pinheiro, Lambrechts, srdan and Orel got assignments in the Europa League. The ones who haven't been assigned to any competition so far—except for the Nations League—are Mariani, Makkelie, and Hernández... Makkelie and Hernández will likely get assigned in the Europa League this week, but I can't say the same for Mariani. My guess is that Webb, the referee observer for the Lyon-Fener match, gave him a low mark.
DeleteSome fairly insignificant observers put this game day. Surprised that some of the more important observers aren’t out given the return of Kovacs
ReplyDeleteSome AR, VAR, AVAR and RO missing
ReplyDeleteNow, I'm almost sure that there's something personal between Rosetti and Makkelie. I do not have in mind a so harsh and unfair treatment for the dutch in the latest 3/4 years, different respect to FIFA assignment I guess it cannot be justified by performance. Jablonski confirmed as new top elite at level of Marciniak, Oliver, Turpin, etc, Important match for Walsh under Sajn's eyes. Sonorous match for Massa who is now more trusted respect to the past, probably due to bad Mariani's moment and the decline of Guida. Happy to see Kovacs back
ReplyDeleteI am not understand untill now why joao pinheiro and other elite referee like makellei and does not get any match in champions league is there some one have any intepretation for that
ReplyDeletePinheiro is out of form. I think Rosetti has a personal issue with Makkelie, he’s the only referee who hasn’t been appointed to any UEFA competitions so far.
Deleteİ think Mariani, won't be assigned to any matches for a long time after that playoff match between Lyon vs Fenerbahce
The issue is not the way you see or read
DeleteBig Match for massa
ReplyDeleteJUSTICE FOR MAKKELIE
ReplyDeleteJUSTICE FOR MAKKELIE
ReplyDeleteMy first comment is on this frequent use of the same referees.
ReplyDeleteThe well-defined patterns of past years during the group stage, when it was different and consisted of six matchdays, have been completely abandoned.
Referees now find themselves officiating one week and then the very next, as if refereeing in domestic competitions has almost become a problem for them.
I think with the total number of referee, including Elite and Category 1, should allow the make all different choices, at least for close weeks, but it's a question of management.
I’m focusing on Mariani regarding his performance. It seems clear to me that regardless of Howard Webb, and we know that observers, even high-profile ones, certainly can have their importance but it's the committee that makes the choices, and they are very, very disappointed with his performance.
Honestly, though, I didn't expect it to this extent, to tell you the truth. He was given a Nations League match, but today made it even clearer that these Nations League games, take Hernández Hernández with the missed penalty in the Champions League play-off, for instance, are viewed in a completely different light.
In fact, they are used for referees who can't be appointed in the Champions League due to poor performances. Anyway, I think we will now see Mariani in Europa League, and then perhaps he will return to the Champions League starting from next matchday.
One should also wonder what happened with Pinheiro and Makkelie, both were at the AFC tournament, so OK, but after that?
Should be expected to see them both in Europa League tomorrow.
Kovacs back in a rather normal game, I think Real Madrid will have an easy win against Leipzig, despite of being a Spanish - German clash for many arguments it's a minor one. Curious to see whether the Romanian has recovered or not.
Committee member for Walsh, but still a normal game.
Šajn will maybe check the Scottish for the next assignment, that, at this point, should surely be a more challenging one.
About Massa, there seems to be a focus on him now.
He can be a contender with Mariani for a final, but well, if we think that at WC Mariani got such important path, then we can't explain how it is possible that at UEFA level he is still there, only Conference League final and some issues for getting more.
Let's be honest: being Italan helps in getting a bit of everything, regardless of the rest, sometimes efforts are not needed, but in my opinion a referee's performance should be always judged with the same criteria.
Now we also understand why Mariani officiated the Nations League match in such a nervous manner.
DeleteCould it be that this is also why Rosetti didn’t like his performance in the NL clash as well?
You see the reason of not to appoint for mariani and hernandez is their performance . Ok what is the reason of pinheiro and makellei
DeleteWell, regarding the pattern, it seems possible, that they actually follow the old one and see MD3&4 as one set. This might explain some choices, if the missing referees are appointed on MD4 and we won't have many doubles on MD3&4.
DeleteThis obviously doesn't fit with the schedule, where MD2&3 are close together.
Makkelie and Pinheiro were also missing in the CL play-offs, so there must be some important reasons.
DeleteOf course, there were some mistakes in their last CL games last season, so maybe Rosetti was very unhappy there?
But it would seem very harsh to punish them for so long and not even give them minor CL games.
Pinhero displayed a very poor refereeing performance in the Champions League semi-final last year. I still think he is paying the price for it.
DeleteKovacs gets a very good appointment after another terrible performance on Friday in Romania Superliga.
ReplyDeleteAfter serving 3 rounds of suspension following a disastrous performance in the DINAMO vs STEAUA derby, Kovacs was appointed to Otelul vs Csikszereda, the lowest profile game of the round. Again he made a total mess from that game:
Video:
https://youtu.be/maOU0tvKobA
1st half - missed pen for away team, for a judo tackle (min 4:17 in the video). No VAR intervention
2nd half - ( see min 1:19) pen awarded for the away team, overturned after VAR check. A soft penalty but VAR should have stayed silent IMO, as there is contact. Also wrong YC for simulation for me, which proved to be decisive as the same player received a 2nd YC a few minutes later.
(min 12:08 in the video) - 2nd YC and RC for the away team for elbowing, hoewever Kovacs didn't see the offender was pushed initially by another defender.
Can I ask why Kovacs wears a UEFA badge (!), not the FIFA one, in domestic game? It seems a deliberate choice, given he is not liked by FIFA, or maybe I'm going too far away?
DeleteSaid that, it's not the first time we see that Kovacs doesn't find the best motivations to officiate in domestic league, but he has still big trust by Rosetti, after a long time out, will start again from CL big stadium (but OK, not a real big game).
In my opinion, more referees from the big leagues should officiate European competition matches instead of referees from smaller leagues. Referees in the top leagues are used to managing high-pressure matches between major clubs, so they can handle other matches with ease. By contrast, it is very difficult for referees in smaller leagues to develop. After a while, most of them even fall below the level they started at. Kovács is one of those referees.
DeleteSo Massa wasn’t good enough for the Euros or the World Cup, but he is good enough for:
ReplyDeleteLiverpool–Atlético
England–Spain
Bayern–Arsenal
Care to explain, Rosetti?
Actually, don’t bother. We all know these appointments would have gone to Mariani if he hadn’t fallen out of favour after a disastrous CL play-off and accidentally showed a RC instead of a YC during the Nations League.
But is that reason enough to give Massa these top games? Absolutely not. I get that it’s hard to maintain the reputation of Italian refereeing, but perhaps it’s time to accept reality: it’s simply a mediocre generation. No amount of big-game appointments will change that.
The race for the Italian spot(s) at EURO 2028 seems quite open at this point.
DeleteAnd if Massa performs well in those big games at the moment, it would be justified to put him on the number one spot - at least for now.
Also for Bayern-Arsenal the options were quite limited, if you don't want to give the game to one of the referees without CL game this season.
Letexier and Turpin obviously, but apparently in this case, UEFA didn't want to repeat from last week.
@RFX you described how it works to make appointments just on the criterion that a referee comes from a certain nationality.
DeleteIndeed that's how it works.
Because if we want to go into detil and to make a deep analysis, we should wonder exactly what you asked, some years ago, Massa not good for any big tournaments, now suddely he can get all these big matches in a row and he can be candidate for a final? Absolutely out of logic.
That's why it's not about the consideration for the referee, but about being Italian, waiting for the best moment for "showing" it. And you can make the most of it.
Vladimir Šajn observing Walsh. Excellent recent appointments for Massa, and Kovacs with a decent appointment aswell.
ReplyDeleteThe other observers aside from Hauge aren’t important ones
DeleteImportant observer for Walsh, whereas the game is on paper not the most valuable one. He deserves, let‘s see what is following.
DeleteThe Netherlands are actually in a rather privileged position compared to Italy:
ReplyDeleteseveral capable referees, but only 2 Elite slots and relatively few top-level appointments to share. So naturally, not everyone can get the same opportunities. Perhaps this explains why Gözübüyük is being given a chance to establish himself ahead of EURO 2028.
That said, Björn Kuipers’ role in all this raises a few eyebrows. His presence at the “ceremony” where Gözübüyük received the Telegraph (sensationalist journalism) Golden Card for best Dutch referee does not exactly scream independence, especially considering Makkelie won that award multiple times without seemingly receiving the same recognition from Björn Kuipers. Even if there is no favouritism, for me as an outsider the optics are far from ideal.
The same goes for Sander van der Eijk, who seems to be receiving a considerable push at UEFA level. Preparing the next generation is perfectly understandable, but the speed of his progression is questionable given his relatively limited experience in domestic top-level matches. Is this purely merit-based, or has he become something of a personal (“Pet”) project for Björn Kuipers?
Meanwhile, in my humble opinion, Makkelie deserves more recognition for his career. At 43 years, he has 60 Champions League appearances and 3 semi-finals under his belt. He had a solid World Cup last summer. Few months ago he was apparently “good enough” to referee Rosetti’s Italy in an important play-off. Yet his standing seems to have taken a hit. I wonder of Björn Kuipers himself recalls that he enjoyed the support of the KNVB and UEFA until the age of 48?
Side note: there is also a bigger concern here. Referees are not stupid; they notice how colleagues are treated after controversial decisions involving major clubs, e.g. Makkelie after PSG. If they feel that a decision against a club like PSG could negatively affect their future appointments, that is hardly healthy for fair play.
People need to stop acting as if Makkelie is being treated unfairly. UEFA is moving forward investing in a new generation and giving opportunities to referees who represent its future. Makkelie has had plenty of opportunities over the years but past achievements do not guarantee a place at the top forever. The reality is that his position within UEFA seems to be declining and perhaps it is time to accept that his Champions League days at the highest level are coming to an end. With his focus increasingly on FIFA UEFA has every reason to look elsewhere. Rosetti and the committee should not be criticised for making room for other referees instead of protecting established names. Refereeing moves on and nobody is bigger than the system. In my view, UEFA is making the right calls and the sooner people accept that Makkelie’s time at the top of UEFA may be over the better.
ReplyDeleteFunny how you were praising Gözübüyük to the skies recently. Your preference is pretty obvious.
DeleteBut let’s stick to facts. What exactly has Gözübüyük done to deserve a push over Makkelie? He didn’t get past the R16 last season, while Makkelie had a CL semi-final and a solid World Cup.
My own observation is that Makkelie has also been more consistent in the Eredivisie recently. Gözübüyük, on the other hand, started the season with the missed red-card incident in the Super Cup, followed by the red card in Fortuna–AZ that appeared to be VAR-driven, without initiating an OFR, and then arguably two missed RC incidents in Ajax–NEC.
So, let’s stick to the facts: what has Gözübüyük actually done to justify being prioritised over Makkelie? And if these incidents are not affecting his standing, it is fair to ask why. Is UEFA’s long-term planning, including the road to EURO 2028, influencing these appointments more than recent performances?
I’m happy to be convinced otherwise, but I’d like to see objective arguments rather than simply being told that Makkelie’s time is up.
Just be honest and stop trying to twist every argument in Makkelie’s favour. In my opinion, Makkelie is no longer among the top 15 referees in Europe. Just look at the appointments given to Kovacs, Oliver, Turpin, Letexier, Massa etc. They are consistently getting bigger and more important matches than Makkelie. At some point, you have to accept what the appointments are telling you instead of constantly trying to find excuses that suit your preferred referee.
DeleteYou’re downgrading Makkelie based on his appointments, and then you bring up Kovacs and Massa - Are you kidding me? Never heard of politics. Not to put it one way or another, but Massa is only getting these games for political reasons - because Mariani is out of favour, Massa basically takes his place. Kovacs has actually been below par over the past few months - could be due to family circumstances and the way FIFA treated him, I’m sorry for him. But honestly he’s lucky to be the only Romanian referee of Elite level thus still can get these appointments.
DeleteI am writing from Türkiye. I have observed that Rosetti and the committee are extremely cautious when it comes to the referees assigned to Galatasaray’s matches. Due to the intense atmosphere at Galatasaray’s home games, the appointment of an elite-level referee has effectively become a necessity for every single match. Furthermore, for Galatasaray’s away games, the committee almost never assigns younger, less experienced referees; they consistently opt for seasoned, elite officials. You have surely also noticed that, lately, Italian and Spanish referees are almost exclusively being assigned to the home matches of Turkish teams—a practice I find to be quite narrow-minded in terms of selection strategy. Finally, despite the "support" Rosetti has provided to Italian referees, there isn't a single truly solid Italian official to be found. What are your thoughts on these points, Chefren?
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I can't understand the discussion about Galatasaray's home matches being assigned almost exclusively to Spanish and Italian referees.
DeleteThe most recent home games were officiated by:
Marco Guida (ITA) vs Barcelona
Jesús Gil Manzano (ESP) vs Liverpool
Danny Makkelie (NED) vs Juventus
István Kovács (ROU) vs Atlético Madrid
José Sánchez Martínez (ESP) vs Union Saint-Gilloise
Michael Oliver (ENG) vs Bodø/Glimt
Clément Turpin (FRA) vs Liverpool
Anthony Taylor (ENG) vs AZ Alkmaar
Kristo Tohver (EST) vs Dynamo Kyiv
Lawrence Visser (BEL) vs Tottenham Hotspur
Matej Jug (SVN) vs IF Elfsborg
Alejandro Hernández Hernández (ESP) vs PAOK
Espen Eskås (NOR) vs Young Boys
Frankly, given that list, the claim doesn't seem particularly convincing. The appointments include referees from Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, England, France, Estonia, Belgium, Slovenia and Norway. Spanish officials appear three times, Italian officials once, and the remaining appointments are spread across a wide range of other UEFA countries.
Peter..

Beşiktaş 2026/27

Bengoetxea (Spain)
I believe Andrea Colombo has what it takes to become a top-tier referee.
DeleteI do not believe that appointing a Slovenian referee for the Lille vs. Galatasaray match is a fair choice. The Slovenian and Turkish federations are in close cooperation, and the winter seminar for Slovenian referees is always hosted in Turkey. Furthermore, the VAR referee for this match, Matej Jug, was the VAR referee in a Turkish league match between Galatasaray and Kocaelispor just a few games ago. I strongly believe these factors should definitely be taken into consideration before making such appointments.
ReplyDeleteThis is called paranoia.
DeleteWith this appointments I think it should also be mentioned that Gishamer arrived finally in real Champions League, which can be understood as success of Austrian referees.
ReplyDeleteAfter officiating two games in Azerbajdzan (Qarabag last season, Sabah in MD2), being now appointed two CL matchdays in a row and in Villa Park, shows that the committee sees him arrived on that level.
Mourinho: “I’m very happy to have a referee like Kovacs tomorrow, he is a great referee.
ReplyDeleteHe is a referee who doesn’t mess around. He is of the highest caliber, and I am very pleased to have a referee like that for an important match.
+1
DeleteOFR for Obrenovic, he gave penalty for a challenge that was assessed as fair on the ball by keeper.
ReplyDeleteRade 🤦🏻♂️ wrong penalty
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.link/v/5ab8b0a4
DeleteWhat is maybe even worse, is his body language during the review - I am not sure that he even tried to see the monitor and valuate the frames. He came to the screen with a body half turned to the pitch and ready to change his decision...
DeleteBetter fast!
Deletebetter to make a quick call than to stand in front of the monitor for a long time, signaling that it was a very, very close decision
DeleteThe Slovenian referee is considered one of the worst elite referees. With all due respect to him, he should never officiate another Champions League match because he simply doesn't deserve it. A truly terrible performance.
DeleteWhy? Anyone can just write empty phrases. Please provide a more detailed explanation as to why it was bad.
DeleteNever, never a penalty
DeleteGood reading the Game, good personality, strong Body Language + disciplinary sanctions. Congrats to Jablonski and his team! AR 1 with a very good performance, too!
ReplyDeleteBeside the wrong penaly I must say good refereeing by Obrenovic. Looks like he was to fast with the penalty call or even maybe AR2 was involved.
ReplyDeleteVery very very soft penalty in Lisbon, would’ve loved an OFR here
ReplyDeletestreamin.link/v/1cd403e6
DeleteA penalty that you always whistle as referee.
But how much contact and how much did attacker look for the call?
Not a PK. The player open the left leg and is the ofensive player that look for the contact
DeleteKovacs' green boots really catch the eye :) As far as I know, the rules require referees to wear black boots. 🤔
ReplyDeleteThere's no rule about what colour boots referees wear. It's just an expectation
DeleteMacron don’t do boots so the referees are free to wear their own. He’s obviously got a sponsor. But. It a good look
DeleteThis is the normal Adidas Copa Pure III. Nothing more.
DeleteDid Massa forget to do the VAR sign before giving the goal or was the camerawork just terrible? Very confusing. Poor offside from AR1 anyway on field
ReplyDeleteI think the call on field was a goal? I think that is why he did not do the VAR signal? Very confusing from the camera operator.
DeleteWe here saw an angle off Eze looking dismayed and then the assistant running back to in line with the "offside" and then just replays until Massa pointed to centre circle... genuinely dont know what happened apart from Ezes reaction suggesting an onfield offside
DeleteI didn't hear a whistle when the ball went in the net.
DeleteThe tv sign on the bottom of the screen said ‘’check over’’ so I guess the on field decision was goal
DeleteJust like the other commentators said, the on-field call was goal and not offside, so the assistant referee did a great job.
DeletePotential SFP for a big tackle by Konsa on Kane, Massa let the advantage and came back on it with a YC.
ReplyDeleteThat tackle looks more like a red card than a yellow
DeleteRidiculous penalty by Sozza in Seville. Should have been an intervention, arm in a natural position, no hand to ball movement.
ReplyDeleteMarco is probably just a LASK fan and not a referee, otherwise you wouldn't write something so ridiculous.
DeleteI'm watching Betis-Feyenoord. No LASK in this game
Deletehttps://streamain.com/en/GW8TvPEhc9DC7f0/watch
DeleteHere the call.
Never a penalty in the dutch league for what its worth
DeleteHmmm, actually completely disagree. Just before the pass defender has both hands on the back, when the ball approaches the hand goes out and was hit by the ball when in a 90 degrees outward position. For me a clear penalty and an intervention when not given on field. So IMHO a very good spot by the Italian referee. And as a Dutch I’d say also in Eredivisie this would not be deemed a natural position.
DeleteWhatever the decision is on the field, I believe that VAR must not react in this situation
DeleteCorrect PK by Massa, clear handball, correct no card imo
ReplyDeletehttps://streamff.com/v/8dc443dd
DeleteThe German is in total confusion at San Siro. He was sent off after two hasty yellow cards. Now he's lost the match.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.me/v/af77e777
DeleteI‘m not watching the game and therefore can‘t evaluate the game management but the 2YC seems to be correct.
DeleteI was referring to the first one that seems free
Deletethe second one was waved after about 20 seconds
DeleteIt seems like AR2 completely missed this incident and he had to spot it
DeleteIm afraid osmers might have done his last cl match in a long time. Rosetti wont tolerate such a rc against an italian side.
ReplyDeleteThe performance is terrible, even against an Italian team: the selection was wrong; a heated match in Milan was predictable. Massa, on the other hand, performed excellently in Monaco.
ReplyDeleteI am a referee fan but before everything an inter fan ( clear from my name) but how is everyone criticizing osmers??
ReplyDeleteThe red card is late( i don’t know what happened but he waited for the action to be over to give him the rc) but it is a deserved red card.
The performance in general is very solid from the german crew, who is impressing me as Saggi did last week
( it is also very good that we can have diverse opinions on referees which is why i love this forum)
DeleteOsmers might have refereed a good match in your opinion, but how do you explain that challenge in the 90+ minute, right outside Inter's penalty box, not being called a foul?
DeleteOsmers looked shaky, and I honestly think he was "scared" of making a mistake.
Only 3 minutes added in Milan with all the substitutes and red card check??? I don't understand
ReplyDeleteI can’t understand how the second goal from Sporting CP is validated.
ReplyDeleteThere is a clear fault close to the AR1 who was about to raise the flag and then wrongly regretted.
Clear and obvious mistake IMO
Overall, it doesn't seem to me as good as yesterday matches, but still a satisfactory standard today. There were some OFRs: Obrenovic in Lille and Gishamer in Birmingham (unless I missed any others), as well as other potentially reviewable situations.
ReplyDeleteThe penalty in Seville seems like a classic handball penalty that meets Italian standards, which have been extended to UEFA, but that other nations wouldn't agree with.
An excellent refereeing performance by Massa in Munich, while, as expected, it was a rather calm match for Kovacs in Madrid with an easy win by home side.
Really not convinced by Gishamer in a very easy game.
ReplyDeleteVery clear tripping missed, and after OFR penalty for Aston Villa given.
ARs with difficulties to assess offside situations, therefore a very tight offside call also reversed after VAR review for the Viking goal.
However, I think one of the biggest mistake was the offside call in 51', too early flag and then whistle when Villa was about to score, replay showed a very tight situation and looked like onside.
Apart from that, very random foul detection and I have not seen him before, but maybe people who follows his career can tell if his natural body language is always that agressive and too theatrical.
Also a missed YC for reckless tackle in 92'.
I watched him in Northern Ireland vs Georgia match recently and also noted that foul detection was very random, also he didn't show a very clear second yc to one of the Georgian guys at the end of the first half.
DeleteA poor performance from Osmers in Milan. He managed the first half well, correctly judging that a Ukrainian defender’s handball during a corner kick did not warrant a penalty.
ReplyDeleteIn the second half, however, his performance collapsed: he failed to book Shakhtar players for provocations, blatant simulation, and various fouls - including one that was inexplicably missed in the build-up to a goal. The first yellow card shown to Bastoni was completely baffling, while the second was overly harsh and prompted by his assistant. Applying such inconsistent standards between the two teams is the worst trait an official can have.
If he aspires to officiate in the Champions League, he needs to turn a new page; a display like this in an international match is hardly a strong credential
It seems the CTA has decided against appointing Alberola Rojas for El Clásico.
ReplyDeleteNow, the frontrunner is Martínez Munuera.
I think this is a wise decision by Fran Soto.
Assigning him now could hinder Rojas’s progress too early on.
It's interesting to observe that the first YC to Bastoni was reported by fourth official, Osmers made a gesture to explain that, once he gave the cards, because Bastoni didn't pay attention to ball before corner.
ReplyDeleteIf the decision can't be assessed as wrong, it's very hard and maybe too much particular in modern refereeing. For consistency purposes, one should expect all players be treated in this way before the execution of a set piece, and we know, that's almost impossible.
Also, the management of added time was not good, too short, but we know this is something from Bundesliga.
We can say that the German officials, in this case being less experienced than the Elite from the same countty we know, tried to apply a different style to a UEFA game.
In my opinion it's not clear what UEFA wants to do with Osmers, he had been assigned to a CL debut we can say rather long time ago, 2024/25, but then nothing followed. With all the other options, I wouldn't have expected him in Milan.
In my view, Osmers lacks a natural sense of authority and attempts to manage the game through strictness and a high number of yellow cards. He does not command the same level of acceptance from the players as, for example, Jablonski or other established referees.
DeleteI think it's just not good for the game that committee is desperately searching for new referees from the big countries, and thus appointing all kinds of mediocre referees. Osmers, Sozza, Burgos they would never be near a UCL pitch if they weren't born in one of the big countries.
ReplyDeleteAny kind of appointment can we expect in matchday four
