Maybe not a 100% simulation, but more that than penalty. Second incident: I wouldn't have whistled as well, one can't be 100% sure how much responsible is defender for that fall, contact looks a bit sought by attacker. Things to consider:

- Was Mendy in full control of the ball?
IMO, yes. Despite not having the ball at the moment of the foul, it was still very close and he had serious chances to reach it.

- is Freuler actually committing a foul?
IMO, yes. He tries indeed to reach the ball, but ends up making contact on Mendy's knee: at this speed, such contacts are enough to make the opponent fall.

- Could another Atalanta player have intervened here?
No! At the moment where the foul occurs, Mendy and Freuler are alone. The Atalanta captain is not far behind, ok, but he is absolutely powerless at the moment the foul occurs.

To be honest, I can't imagine a scenario where this is not a red card. In past weeks, we were not happy that referees needed VAR to get such DOGSO calls right, Stieler did it here without VAR and in my opinion he has got it spot on.

I think the problem is not the decision itself, but the fact that it happened so early in the game. I believe it would have gained more acceptance if it had happened in, let's say, minute 65. However, the fact that this incident happened in 17' is by no means Stieler's fault: he simply applies LotG correctly! And if fans and media (and random bots on social media or on here) start now to question a referees competence because he CORRECTLY APPLIES THE LAWS, then I believe we have a very huge problem!

Full support for Tobias Stieler!Stakehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10451539425446628688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3596681196436096141.post-42837957840315704022021-02-25T09:50:53.404+01:002021-02-25T09:50:53.404+01:00Here in Switzerland the decision was said to be co...Here in Switzerland the decision was said to be correct. I was really shocked what I had to read on Duch Referee‘s post. This is is the problem with social media: Everyone one can write everything. Disgusting. No knowledge of the laws but if your team gets a decision against them (doesn‘t matter if correct, supportable or wrong!) the referee is insulted. As blogger I share an image at the start of the game and then usually use the hashtag with the name of the referee or the teams involved. I got over 100 hate messages from Italian football fans who curse at the referee. Or they insult me because they think I am that referee - as if I was live-posting this while referee.

I have seen this before, but what worries me now is that it even happens with correct and supportable decisions. Although I want to state that some reactions always go too far, even when a decision is wrong, I can understand some frustration when there's no contact at all and a penalty kick is given. But the aggresion shown now just because a decision is taken against their team, even with correct calls, is worrying me.Jan from DutchReferee.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17683030000398195442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3596681196436096141.post-35679570946391762432021-02-25T08:27:01.758+01:002021-02-25T08:27:01.758+01:00Very negative feedbacks from the most important It...Very negative feedbacks from the most important Italian newspapers about Stieler perfomance yesterday, with the red card reported as very clear mistake. I must say I dislike this approach of Italian media about UEF refereeing, since Collina's times, there seems to be always conspiracy theories (mistakes against Italian teams on purporse). I strongly condemn that and I think red card was a fully supportable decision. In my opinion another big problem for Italy is that nowadays in serie A it seems as we are used to a "common sense" officiating without "strong" decisions (especially at the beginning of a game) that could be fully correct according to law, but people don't want to see. That's terrible. In a way, I think that teams have taken the scene over refereeing, that's not good. Having said that this RC is fully supportable and even absolutely correct for some people, I must state that I dislike modern times, in which it seems that for most of the people, refereeing must obey to teams and not the contrary. I don't want to say that referees must take full control of everything, but decisions on the pitch must be accepted. It is time to stop such behavior. However, in a more general speech, we could include in this discussion the trend by some referees to be lenient, to play on in clear situations, to issue YC. The pure refereeing seems difficult to put into practice today. I don't know what is the situation in other country but that's all I can report for Italy.
