Tomorrow appointments for Tuesday and so on...

ReplyDeleteEkberg in Legia-Dudelange and Dudelange-Cluj
Nonsense ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
False. Halis Özkahya and Ivaylo Stoyanov were referees of Legia vs Dudelange clash.
Delete
DeleteI am sorry. It was my mistake.
Ivan Kružliak with the most significant assignment here: a Serbian - Turkish duel, with a committee member as observer, and if you ask me, this is the season in which he is planned for CL debut.
ReplyDeleteKrálovec with a new pair of assistant referees, maybe this will be the team on the road to EURO 2020, if he is a candidate. In any case, time for Slyško, given his age, seems to be over, even though he has still not retired.
Kruzliak already did two CL-duels. Liverpool - Maribor and Man. City - Feyenoord. He also did a round of 32 and a round of 16 in EL.
DeleteI think he's ready to be promoted to ELITE, if he does well this season. I even think he will be promoted during the winterbreak, if he performs well in this match and his CL-matches.
Big match, indeed.
Indeed, he made his debut last season.
DeleteFrom the first category the ones to be watched carefully are surely: Ağayev, Kabakov, Siebert, Stieler, Massa, Treimanis, Gözübüyük, Kovács, Jovanović, Kružliak, Vinčič and Ekberg.
Especially Kabakov and Kovács got my attention last seasons.
Partizan - Besiktas could have been a CL Group stage match.
DeleteYes, sorry, my mistake. So we can say he is close to promotion in Elite in case of good performance.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteAgreed. A bit old school, quite a lot of catds (4,55 on average), but for sure a good referee.
DeleteSo, no Skomina at 1st play-off leg. Jug and Vincic are in UEL
ReplyDeleteExcellent read about the roles of referee liaison officer, match delegate and referee observer. Big 'thank you' to Gayle Hope (author) and Ray Ellingham (referee observer)

very low profile match for Mateu. what do you think ?
ReplyDeleteimo most sonourus match is for Collum
DeleteFIFA and UEFA don´t like Matéu.
Yeah they don’t like him that’s why he was in the world cup and gets great matches in CL...
DeleteOne possible explanation regarding his absence in CL playoff might be that Valencia (ESP) depends on the result of 4 of the matches to know to which of the four drawing groups for the group stage it belongs given the coefficients, and precisely he is from Valencia. However, this seems to me like a weak argument and also doesn't explain the profile of the match nor it being a first leg.
DeleteLet's see what happens in the group stage appointments.
I disagree about Collum. Kralovec, Vincic and Kruzilak got more sonorous matches. But I also wonder about Mateu

ReplyDeleteGirona FC - Real Valladolid CF
Guillermo Cuadra Fernández
López Mir, García González, Ripoll Solano
VARs: del Cerro Grande, Yuste Jiménez
La Liga opened last night in Catalonia, with a quiet match between Girona and Real Valladolid. Probably not many people will remember this scoreless match. Guillermo Cuadra Fernández will though- he made his Primera División debut having been promoted at the end of last season. Furthermore, this was the first Primera match to have a VAR team, so there was a high (potential) pressure for the 'arbitro' from the Balearic Islands.
Some points:
=> First of all, well done to Mr Cuadra Fernández.
In my opinion, also considering that VAR debuts in this match, it was a bit 'unfair' to designate a new promoted referee to this match. I know it was hardly sonorous match, but surely a referee with more experience (eg Jaime Latre or so), would have been a more sensible designation for my taste. Cuadra Fernández solved this match without problems, he will be far away from the headlines, and even the commentary said "muy bien trabajo por el arbitro"- well done.
=> We had two YCs, both within a minute of each other, at about 85'. Both were correct decisions, and it also his merit the first card is so late in the match.
=> He whistled quite a lot of fouls (40+), which especially in the circumstances was absolutely fine. Perhaps he could look to be a bit more lenient in future matches especially when a calm atmosphere allows it (it could have done in this match), but his 'safe' approach was clearly sensible on the night.
=> Three small penalty appeals for Girona, all correctly rejected without problems. No need for any public intervention by VAR del Cerro Grande.
=> Some small points for improvement:
* Better management of delaying the restart. Valladolid tried to delay play quite a lot. Twice Girona got very irritated at some more obvious moments. At the first he gave a small verbal warning, the second was more blatant and the referee did nothing. I would suggest that next time the referee could use a bit of management, stepped approach, prevention etc.
* At 27', in a control zone of Referee-AR2, referee made a small gesture of 'play on' before AR2 (correctly) flagged a freekick. It is better to wait until you have made a decision as a team, before making any gestures.
* I don't know whether he was speaking to the VAR or resolving his shoelace, but as Girona were trying to score a winning goal at the end of the match, it was better to make a gesture before they took the throw-in to wait, rather than whistle having them taken it, as this irritated Girona a bit (needlessly).
> I hope the triviality of these observations point towards a convincing performance.
In summary, I hope that the team lead by Guillermo Cuadra Fernández are happy with their performance in opening LaLiga 2018/19. They solved the match without problems, and are far away from the headlines. Even the local broadcaster praised their performance. Well done.
Being 34 years old, it will be interesting to see what kind of impression Cuadra Fernández can make in the Primera this season, it's not really fair to judge his overall merits as a referee on this match. Good luck for the future.
I didn't know, VAR started in Spain.
DeleteThen there is a huge mistake Real Madrid-Getafe game that they didn't show the PK at 86-87th minute for Real Madrid push on Assensio...
Weird.
Cardiff Newcastle (referee Pawson), straight RC for Isaac Hayden SFP. Tackle from behind. I will look for a video.
ReplyDeleteHere's the clip
Delete=> https://streamable.com/hu1h1
I must say an EXCELLENT decision again by Craig Pawson, just as last week. Catches entirely the leg from behind, absolutely no intent to play the ball and clearly endangering the safety of the opponent! Very well done!
Kind of like the tackle in the 2016 Copa America final
DeleteFrom behind, excessive force, without a chance to hit the ball. Enough for a RC.
DeleteHowever, I'm always impressed by English referees management when they have to show a card: they wait even a long time before showing it, in this case Pawson at first looked at the fouled player and then he decided. Here one expects, after such tackle, the referee to go immediately to show RC to the author, also to prevent possible riots / confrontations... for sure in leagues like Italy, Spain and so on, you can't officiate with such coolness.
I think Chris Kavanagh will replace Bobby Maddley in January. He is a new version of Michael Oliver . Calm , not arrogant , communicative . Much better ref than Tierney or Attwell . He will become soon an elite ref
DeleteGreek FIFA AR KOULA Chasan who was present at the UEFA U17 Final tournament in May failed the fitness test today.
ReplyDeleteMoreover a new SL referee and 4 more AR's failed the tests.
They will all be taken off the lists.
In Greek Superleague there will be foreign referees especially on derbies after Borballan's successful performance
DeleteTrue. But there is a deeper issue. There is no trust on referees. You can't add 3 (4) new FIFA referees without any derby on their feet.
DeleteMany things are wrong atm and I don't see any solution.

ReplyDeleteDecisive and controversial penalty situation in Spanish 2nd Division match Albacete-Deportivo de la Coruña. Referee is Valentín Pizarro Gómez.
Furthermore, DEP14 was sent off for shouting twice "eres muy malo!" -you're awful/very bad- to the referee.

Your thoughts?
There's also some controversy with a rejected penalty appeal from Iglesias Villanueva yesterday in Betis-Levante, no OFR requested by Álvarez Izquierdo.
Regarding Betis-Levante, IMO it is not a clear mistake. It seemed to be the attacker's feet going towards the defender's. There was room to support the referee's decision and as such, an OFR would have been inappropriate. Remember, it is just my opinion.

DeleteVery good call by gianluca rocchi to disallow napolis first equaliser when d foul was missed by Luca banti an no OFR needed
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteNot penalty in Betis-Levante.
Very good call by gianluca rocchi to disallow napolis first equaliser when d foul was missed by Luca banti an no OFR needed
ReplyDeleteI don't think that VAR intervened in this situation, it was Banti on the pitch that changed idea after having allowed at first glance the gol.
DeleteThere wasn't any VAR gesture... not the best management by Banti, I would say, he saw the player lying on the ground and he then disallowed the goal.
Also, in case of VAR intervention, I think Banti should have rewatched the incident, because it was a foul play, Rocchi couldn't overrule without an OFR by referee on the pitch.
I didn't like Banti's passive approach today. He missed a mandatory YC after reckless tackle around 30', allowed dissents twice and in the dying stages he didn't react at all after a player aggresively grabbed an opponent by the collar and the conflict continued in the next stoppage.
DeleteSometimes, very often, this is the "classic" Banti :)
DeleteHe doesn't want to show cards at all!
One can accept such approach if the referee is able to manage problematic players. But Banti did nothing after that grab by the collar what was really astonishing (and could have ended much worse).

33' that's shocking from Pawson. Nothing to add.
DeleteI never, ever liked this referee. On this blog many people wrote that he is rising star and that things... I never saw a single match of him where he didn't make crucial, obvious, significant mistake. By no means one of the worst referees in top leagues in Europe. Hey, this happened just in front of him, he had at least to hear that kick in the leg! This player would be banned 3-4 matches for sure, but what about Pawson?
DeleteAlso, for 2 same thing he gave RC and YC! Where is consistency? For me, should be oposite.

DFB has only published Siebert's and Zwayer's appointments for next week, but not Aytekin's. So maybe a questionmark behind his availability? He has also not refereed any domestic match so far this season...
ReplyDeleteAdding up the clubs' coefficients we get the following results
ReplyDelete98,235 - Sigma Olomouc vs Sevilla (Madden)
78,000 - Zenit vs Molde (Aytekin)
77,500 - Partizan vs Beşiktaş (Kružliak)
64,000 - Basel vs Apollon (Jug)
51,606 - Olympiakós vs Burnley (Vinčič)
49,500 - APOEL vs Astana (Siebert)

31,750 - Sūduva vs Celtic (Bebek)
31,000 - Zorya vs Leipzig (Bastien)
29,500 - Malmö vs Midtjylland (Jovanović)
28,250 - Torpedo Kutaisi vs Ludogorets (Göçek)
26,000 - Genk vs Brøndby (Treimanis)
19,590 - Sarpsborg vs M. Tel-Aviv (Bezborodov)
17,000 - Rosenborg vs Shkëndija (Grinfeld)
13,000 - Trenčín vs AEK Larnaca (Mateu Lahoz)
12,718 - Rangers vs Ufa (Stefański)
09,750 - Olimpija Ljubljana vs Spartak Trnava (Pawson)
09,250 - Dudelange vs Cluj (Ekberg)
So, on paper, Madden with the biggest game, but only thank to Sevilla. :)
Very good match for Jovanović, I am very happy for him. It is interesting that his rating is higher in Europe, than in domestic league. But, that's Serbian refereeing... He should be Mazic's successor, although it will be very tough to reach him. But, if he continuous to referee as he did so far, he will have his place among Elite one day.
ReplyDeleteIf Serbian federation wants to develop refereeing, they should try to be consistent with UEFA choices. Of course, performance must talk, but at the same time if a referee is followed by UEFA, they should allow him to handle top clashes in domestic league, otherwise it could be a missed occasion.
DeleteI remember that Grujić was removed from FIFA list despite of being a very reliable AAR in Mažić team. Something should change, if you ask me.
AR2 is replaced by Dragan Bogicevic. Dont know the reason.
DeleteGrujic was removed coz he fighted with strong words against Miroslav Radoman coz he wanted to remove Mazic and his whole team from FIFA list.
Seems like AR2 Milan Mihajlovic got injured. Same team with Dragan Bogicevic as AR2 appointed for league match.
DeleteSome interesting points from Marijo Strahonja,former referee on Croatian Tv;
ReplyDeleteHe said that this is a big match for Ivan Bebek to again prove that he can return to Elite category, because his observer will be Alfredo Trentalange, who is very close with Rosetti.
He also said that in this past year Bebek had a solid year and that he recovered from his horor Braga night.
I would like that. Bebek is a very good referee, with a good personality, who had some bad luck. However, I like how he went on afterwards. I'd like to see him in CL again.
DeleteWhich Braga match are you talking about? (Sorry for my "ignorance")
DeleteBraga - Fener. EL R16.

DeleteOk, thanks :D
DeleteA question for Polish and Austria readers.
ReplyDeleteIs it true that Melo Pereira asked for Polish and Austrian referees to be in charge of derby matches in Greece?
I haven't heard anything yet.
DeleteMelo Pereira is paid by Greek federation just to call referees from other countries? This would be shocking, we can do that as well, no need of having a so important figure in that role!
DeleteI expect more, Greek refereeing must develop with local referees.
There is no trust on Greek referees. Last season Borbalan was called for the Cup final because AEK wanted Papapetrou and PAOK wanted Sidiropoulo.
DeleteSo Melo Pereira decided for a foreign referee to defuse the situation. Of course he didn't inform the SL referees who were furious.
This year we have 9 new SL names. 1 of them failed the fitness tests.
The problems are bigger on the lower categories. I don't see any solution.
Having watched the match in Greece today, I fully understand the problem in Greece. When international referees from a different country cannot handle a situation in half time with outsiders walking into the pitch, would you except greek referees to do that? Melo Pereira is right; How many Bjorn Kuipers are there in Europe though.?
Delete"Melo Pereira is right"
DeleteThis whole mess is his responsibility. And his partners. When you come to a foreign country to become Head of refereeing, you must come prepared. Just like Kyros did in Romania. You must have an image of the referees and AR's. Melo had nothing. He trusted Tritsonis and Koukoulakis so bad and they forced him to many mistakes.
Before Melo, Greece had 4 national league categories. That way they could monitor young referees at the age of 21-22 and appoint them to youth matches. Now this category is gone and those matches are given to 3rd league referees. They said that FIFA demanded it. Ridiculous.
Many things are wrong. From the selection of referees and observers to their development.
Dutch FA revealed the second leg appointments of their referee, so here is the full list

Bezborodov already whistled 3 penalties in Sarpsborg - Maccabi
ReplyDeleteOnly 1 card in Bebek match.
ReplyDeleteThat is a rarity from him, looks like he had calm match.
Madden missed what I think was close to a RC in 70'. Otherwise, easy match with not much to report.
ReplyDeleteCraig Pawson already with a penalty and a straight RC.
ReplyDeleteKruzliak did not give cristal clear yc in 35'.
ReplyDeletePenalty from Vincic in favor of Burnley. Correct.
ReplyDeleteCould you offer more detailed review of Vincic performance in Piraeus.
DeleteAs I saw there were two penalties and a red card.
Aytekin was expected level today without major decisions.
ReplyDeleteStefański is tolerating fouls from Ufa players way too long without a single booking
ReplyDeleteSounds like typical Stefański :)
DeleteI can report a good, expected level performance by Královec in Atalanta - Copenhagen, including a correct crucial decision taken by AR2 in first half: disallowed goal scored by Atalanta.
ReplyDeleteHere are 3 penalties from Sarpsborg - Maccabi Tel Aviv (Bezborodov):
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeVZJr3Y850
First penalty: correct, including YC.
DeleteSecond penalty: not 100% sure about the real contact, it can be even a simulation, but without further and close replays I think one must back referee.
Third penalty: foul but impossible to say whether inside or outside, maybe exactly on the line, but I'm not sure.
The first and second situations were solved correctly. But as for the third, it would be more correct to determine the foul before the line, the line passed under the body of the goalkeeper.

DeleteAll penalties are correct, two obvious ones, and third is difficult to detect the place of contact. Contact is just on the line. Good performance, stable referee. Great teamwork.
DeleteIoannis you have video from vincic?, why it was shocking bad. His observer was Rune Pedersen, i read bad news everywhere But without video it’s difficult to judge,
ReplyDeleteThe match of bezbodorov i will support the 3 penaltyss

Key Match Incidents
Delete8:17 - possible 2nd YC
9:30 - penalty incident, handling
10:10 - penalty incident, trip off the ball
I would like to read you views
8:17 - 2nd YC would not have been wrong, maybe even correct. However, I can live with his decision to show no card.
Delete9:30 - No punishable handling, ball to hand, hand very close to body.
10:10 - No penalty, accidental tripping. Neither careless nor reckless offence by the defender.
8:17 in my opinion clear YC
Delete9:30 not punishable handball, I agree with Aytekin
10:10 difficult to whistle such penalty

ReplyDeleteIvan Kružliak (SVK)
Somoláni, Hancko, Glova
Obs: Karlsson (SWE)
Challenging task for thrity-four years old Ivan Kružliak in Belgrade. Match which was never played unfairly, but certainly quite passionately giving the Slovakian some problems to face.
Kružliak solved the match well, and he should be happy with his performance, he was ready for the challenges in this SRB-TUR clash.
Considering the observer especially, I think we can say that Kružliak took a good step closer to becoming an Elite Category referee.
Some points:
=> I really liked Kružliak's self-presentation in this match. Reticent, firm, determined, but still involved with the players as an active presence- he found the right balance in this match.
His approach was a macrocosm of this situation at 47' (https://streamable.com/5wggf): he was not interested in being the players' friend, but he conversed with them frequently and created a positive rapport, emanating trust and respect. Even since 8' (see below) he showed to be very active in managing the players, and in 54' (https://streamable.com/a12iu) showing an impressive finer management helping to prevent a conflict. In other words, he managed to talk with the players without giving up his authority. This approach really worked on the pitch.
=> Kružliak whistled a tight match. Whistling fourty-seven fouls including some smaller contacts, together with a sensible disciplinary control and an (aforementioned) active approach allowed him to always have control of his hot match. Perhaps some of the whistles were evitable, and he missed some larger contacts here and there, but his line was largely consistent and predictable for the players. It was coherent with Kružliak's optic and the match.
=> Kružliak gave seven cautions in this match. All of them were correct, and corresponded to his quite whistling of the match.
* However, a YC was missed at 34' (https://streamable.com/6uysf), which is surprising considering not only the clear reckless nature of the tackle but also it was the perfect moment to open the cards. Perhaps AR1 should have have helped him detect the reckless nature of the tackle.
* After that, the way Kružliak used cards was very good. Cards for SPA (37', 41', +91'), reckless tackles (42', 79'), and dissent (see below) were all following a clear line which it was clear everyone understood. I would underline a good moment to open the cards at 37' (https://streamable.com/k5dmw0), excellent reaction at 42' (https://streamable.com/jffql), very good detection at 79' (https://streamable.com/wqrdc) and of course the dissent which I want to talk about below.
=> Management of dissent was very good. Early in the match at 8' (https://streamable.com/ye32l) BES88 showed a dissent which was actually a mandatory YC against AR2. Kružliak decided to warn him in a very public way, which in my opinion was the perfect solution. To open the cards there would have only inflamed the match, I liked the common-sensical approach shown here.
Then throughout the match, Besiktas players made a lot of small dissenting gestures after some decisions. Kružliak was tolerating them without reaction, which I thought wasn't in order with his approach, but at 57' (https://streamable.com/cimt0) he told the captain surely "the next player who dissents, YC!".
A minute later (https://streamable.com/pb0fq), BES88 was cautioned for a small dissent. It was not the biggest in the match, but I liked that it was shown it wouldn't be tolerated anymore. Especially as BES88 was the loudest player this was an 'excellent' YC. Well Done.
=> Referee showed a really excellent fitness, which ascertained his modern approach and meant he was always close to assess duels.
Delete=> Roman Slyško might have joined the CZE team, but the two assistants computed offside decisions well and showed to be good team members. AR1 had a few situations to evaluate, and only made one mistake.
Good performance by Ivan Kružliak in one of the most important matches in his UEFA career. If we consider the missed YC (-0,1), we have a performance on an 8,4 level in my opinion. Let's see how the Slovakian team can do in CL this season.
Best wishes for the future.
ReplyDeleteKruzliak must be ELITE
Vinčič ordered two penalties in Olympiacos - Burnley

Penalty 2

Both correct decisions, in the second incident arm is open... shot on goal so YC.
DeleteHow is the first penalty correct? There is no push, no possession. there is contact, but contact does not mean penalty. The second one: look carefully, the ball hit the leg of player and then hand. It is not a deliberate handball. You are saying that the arm was in an unnatural position. I agree but there is a deflection, short distance and it is also debatable if the shot was on goal. too far from the goal and too short distance. Please interpret the laws properly. Football is not basketball. Any contact is a penalty or any hand is deliberate or unnatural.
Delete1) Very harsh decision - play on would have been better IMO. Not sure though, whether it should be counted as clear mistake.
Delete2) Correct penalty IMO, the increased body surface / unnatural arm penalty overweighs the deflection in this specific situation - why is he holding his arm like that?
Philipp, I disagree with the second penalty but I fully understand what you are saying. How is that a second yellow card though? An unnatural handball from closed distance is never a second yellow card offence. I live in England and am quite used to English interpretation of handball. The first penalty is a clear mistake.
DeleteThe big issue with Vincic yesterday was lack of authority. He was bullied by players, Presidents, managers and did nothing about it apart from wrong bookings.
DeleteIoan, if the referee whistles a penalty here, he has to issue a YC because it's a shot on goal. That's what UEFA want.
DeleteEnglish refs would never show a yellow card for that because it is not deliberate and of a very short distance. How would you justify that was a shot on goal? It was too close to say that. English commentators said last night that both penalties were wrong, especially the first one. The second one can be given without a yellow card. Just to mention, that the first booking was wrong. Vincic showed two yellow cards for one bad foul. Some of his cards were ridiculous.
DeleteSorry, I'm in trouble to believe that you are talking from a neutral point of view. I must be honest.
DeleteI think Slovenian referees are pushed a bit too much, considering that Slovenian league is very weak. Skomina is an excellent referee, but I do not think that Vincic or Jug are equally talented. We needs more balance in European refereeing country-wise. There are countries in Europe like Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweeden, Croatia, even Portugal that have been underrepresented in European competitions.
DeleteI am a greek supporter of Olympiakos, who lives in England and referees leagues in England.
DeleteTo be fair, I was astonished that Vinčič was not promoted to Elite Category in June... He deserved that!
DeleteI Cannot be more neutral, but I discussed the match with my colleagues here from the local refereeing community.
DeleteOne last question..You are saying that Vincic deserves to become Elite ref. How on earth an elite ref would accept the president of a team to come down and into the pitch at half time to protest and go with him in the changing rooms? Does that make a ref an ELITE REF?
DeleteWhat would you expect from Vinčič in this case? Most likely he wrote about that incident in the report.
Deleteif Kuipers was there, do you believe that anyone would approach him to any distance less than 30 m? I was expecting Vincic to stay in the middle of the pitch and to make sure that everyone not involved in the match has been off pitch before he enters changing rooms and not walking towards changing rooms with 3-4 people behind him. Sean Dyche said yesterday that in Premier league that would never happen. As a greek fan, i know that presidents with guns insulting and threatening refs is a common practice in the greek league. but not for the civilised world of football
