Finally something interesting for Sidiropoulos. I think I will watch the game, so I will report about his performance, very important with a committee member. He must make a further step inside Elite category, of course only in terms of consideration by committee. I wish him good luck.
ReplyDeleteCommittee member for Gözübüyük as well...
Gözübüyük is clearly pushed for the Elite category in a couple of seasons.
DeleteSidiropoulos must convince the committee that he can remain on the Elite. After the not so good last season, this feels like a big test for him.
Sidiropoulos deserves to remain in the Elite category. He tries to play the advantage and is very fit. Greek refs have a reputation of supporting Italian teams though. It has happened in the past countless times, especially when Vassaras was active.
DeleteI am not examining whether Sidiropoulos deserves to stay in the Elite. I am just saying that if the Dutchman won't be satisfied by his performance, then he will receive meaningless appointments and his Elite spot will be in grave danger.
DeleteI agree..Very important observer and appointment. He needs to avoid silly mistakes, as such he made today in the greek superleague.
DeleteGood matches for Hategan, Sidiropoulos, Gozubuyuk, Makkelie and Kassai
ReplyDeleteHeh, Greek commitee member for Dutch referee and Dutch commitee member for Greek referee. If not wrong this is third match for Uilenberg in this year qualifications, very unusual for committee member.
ReplyDeleteAlso, to be noticed: two new assistant referees for Karasev, Demeshko and Lunev. Demeshko attended some UEFA Youth Championships...
ReplyDeleteBoth Averianov and Kalugin too old in any case for EURO 2020.
I notice that spanish referees in this leg are appointed with their regular LaLiga AR2s, which are both non-FIFA. However, Mateu Lahoz was appointed with two FIFA ARs in the first leg. Why is it so?
ReplyDeleteBTW, any comments on Mateu's performance on the first leg? I couldn't watch the match.
Marciniak is appointed for a CL play off - second leg.
ReplyDeleteVery positive signal for him: after having handled Super Cup, maybe this wasn't so much expected, considering that there are "only" 12 play off games. Big trust in the Polish and hopefully we are watching again the "old" Marciniak. We can also say that his performance in Super Cup has been assessed at least as expected level, otherwise he wouldn't have got a play off, I think.
Marciniak in Athens or Saltzburg?
DeleteKuipers in Thessaloniki, Taylor in Eindhoven, Brych in Kiev.
DeleteIf we take those three as given, Skomina has to go to Athens (because of Belgrade and Zagreb in other matches).
DeleteCakir Zagreb, Marciniak Saltzburg and Skomina Athens.

Player-coach conflict
https://streamable.com/hyny6
1) Correct change
Delete2) Borderline, both decisions supportable, no VAR intervention is correct
3) I can't detect any contact, therefore simulation - surprising, that VAR did not intervene
4) Good punishments. But I wonder, whether with cards for coaches, he maybe would have seen only YC.
Any further comments on Vincic's performance last night? He was terrible. He lost control of the match towards the end of first half , and never got it back. Players and managers were protesting constantly. The President of Olympiakos came down to have a word with at the interval. Two very debatable penalties, countless cautions, some of them quite ridiculous and very very bad man management. Sean Dyche was fuming at the end of the match. Hopefully, Kassai will be stronger and more decisive than Vincic. Based on yesterday's performance, Vincic does not deserve a champions league match this season. Too soft and not proactive.
ReplyDeleteDifficult match for Kassai
DeleteI have downloaded Vincic's match and I will watch it tomorrow.
DeleteYou can expect a report on his performance and possibly some videos.
He was terrible..

Var did not even review the penalty decision. But it reviewed the penalty kick, which had to be retaken due to the goalkeeper off his line or players in the penalty box at the time of kick?
It wasn't a penalty in my opinion and I think Var should have asked for a review by the ref.
Should be a play-on call.
DeleteNot sure about the penalty call either, Ribery kicks the ball too far away then dives over.
DeleteBut good to see the VAR checking the penalty - too many times you see players getting away with encroachment.
The GK was maybe a step off his line, presumably the retake was because both teams were encroaching? As law 14 says: "if ... a player of both teams offends the Laws of the Game, the kick is retaken unless a player commits a more serious offence (e.g. illegal feinting);"
Yes, wrong penalty and missing VAR intervention. I would even say simulation, but play-on would also be OK.
DeleteI think, the retake was due to players entering the box to early - a good decision by VAR and referee.
In general a quite challenging and interesting match for Dankert - refereeing highlights would be appreciated ;)
Otherwise I will see, what I can find tomorrow.
Clearly a simulation, maybe VAR didn't intervene because there was somehow a contact but... difficult to accept.
DeleteIt wouldn't have been a mistake, in my opinion, to invite referee to rewatch.
Should be a card for simulation otherwise it will be seen as accepted to jump over an opponent and pretend you got killed.
DeleteMy guess is that VAR highlighted the encroachment because the player that scored (#10 red) was one of the heaviest encroachers.
DeleteThe other main talking point is this disallowed goal for handball after VAR intervention:
Deletehttps://www2.pic-upload.de/img/35846856/ezgif.com-video-to-gif214.gif
https://www2.pic-upload.de/img/35846860/ezgif.com-gif-maker53.gif
https://www2.pic-upload.de/img/35846858/ezgif.com-video-to-gif213.gif
Furthermore no 2nd YC for Adams is criticized. Possibly the hardest of several fouls after his booking is this one:
https://www2.pic-upload.de/img/35846808/ezgif.com-video-to-gif212.gif
VAR situations: https://streamable.com/bq9xp
DeleteDFB published a statement defending the missing VAR intervention at the penalty.
Delete"The VAR has rightly not intervened in this situation, because he should only intervene if the situation is clearly and obviously wrong. In the present case, the Hoffenheim defender slides from the side in the duel with the Bayern player and does not hit the ball. The Bayern player lops the ball over the defender and then jumps over him. The defender pulls his leg up briefly and changes his body position by a turn. It comes to contact with the Bayern player. To judge this process as a foul is an interpretation question that remains with the referee. The discussions in this case also range from 'dive' over 'natural collision' to 'careless defensive behaviour bringing the opponent down'. The decision therefore has to be classified as 'controversial', but not as 'clearly and obviously wrong'."
This seems to be a minority opinion, but of course, it is the opinion, which counts. So we have to hope that this line is at least followed consistently throughout the season.
Thanks for this update, Philipp.
DeleteSo now, according to this statement, I guess that penalties will be annulled only in case of NO CONTACT AT ALL between the players, as all the rest can belong to the category described by DFB.
Bayern-Hoffenheim, too soft Bastien Dankert with the violences
ReplyDeleteof Hoffenheim.
Clear PK for handball missed by Munuera Montero in Leganés-Real Sociedad. Question is: Why didn't Iglesias Villanueva even recommendend an OFR?
ReplyDeleteMinute 0:41.
https://youtu.be/EmAGXVqf0ts
Maybe due to the very short distance. And Munuera had a clear view, a review would not have helped him much.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteGoal of Wolverhampton: Handball.
Painful Atkinson all the match.
Stuff for VAR. Maybe Atkinson could have tried to have a better angle of view, but he is not a referee who can always ensure an accurate officiating, given his physical condition.
DeleteWhat about the assistant referee?
DeleteIf I'm not wrong, the touch by hand / arm happened on the contrary side than AR's view. The same player was obstructing assistant referee...
Delete@chefren: Are you implying that Atkinson is not physically fit?
DeleteClip of Wolves goal scored by hand: https://cdnja.r.worldssl.net/mp4/11/1172.mp4
Delete@Robbie82 that's my point of view, yes.
DeleteAt least, he can't run like Oliver, to explain it better.
That's the problem when a league allows 60 year old referee's to still be active. Of course, I am exaggerating on the age. But it's a known fact that some referee's in the EPL are "OLD". And I am left to question the physical standards expected by their Ref Comm. Or how strictly they enforce the standards. Especially when you see Atkinson struggling through matches or seeing Lee Mason and Jon Moss "waddle" through their matches.

Thanks!
DeleteFirst RC is fully correct and let me say, excellent that it was spotted!
Second RC for DOGSO: I think this is borderline to YC, however RC is acceptable and not wrong. One can think that the other defender could still try to reach the ball... but attacker would have joined the penalty area without other opponents.
I agree completely with Chefren.
DeleteMissed penalty for Liverpool by Kavanagh (handball).
ReplyDeleteAnyone who knows who will become next English FIFA referee,
DeleteHim probably, the only viable candidate!
DeleteWhat about David Coote?
DeleteHe was only promoted to SG1 this summer so I cannot see that happening this year.
DeleteMinimum of 2 years experience in Premier League is needed..
DeleteBusacca is in Turin at stadium for Juventus - Lazio, referee is Irrati.
ReplyDeleteI think Busacca made a promise to Irrati during WC: "I will watch your first game on next serie A...". ;)
Seems like a lost bet ;)
Deletehttps://youtu.be/te-wAvlNWSM
ReplyDeleteRC for DOGSO or YC for SPA?
Surely borderline, but taking into account the direction in which the ball was kicked by the attacker, presence of the goalkeeper who was ready to intervene and that the ball was kicked quite heavily by the attacker who had no full possession anymore, I opt for a yellow card only - SPA by holding.
DeleteTotally agree.
DeletePenalty for PAOK.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamable.com/xzklc
As the contact existed, it's surely an acceptable decision.
DeleteObvious simulation. Not easy live of course but on replay it's very clear.

DeleteRidiculous penalty. Yellow card all day long.
Deletehttps://youtu.be/rTs73lyo_ME
ReplyDeleteWolfsburg - Schalke. There is a confrontation between Burgstaller and Weghorst. Weghorst get a RC and Burgstaller a YC. Patrick Ittrich made a OFR and decide to give Werghorst Yellow.
I ask you to put your lights on this
DFB has declared the VAR intervention as wrong.
DeleteAnd VAR Stark has defended his decisions in an interview. Seems that some talks are required there...

DeleteThe other decisions are at least acceptable IMO with the most doubts about the 2nd handball.
Superb offside by Pau Cebrián Devís in Valladolid - Barcelona (min 82).
ReplyDeleteAnd VAR disallows the Valladolid equaliser in the very last minute due to offside.
DeleteOne clarification: Jon Núñez Fernández disallowed the goal, and VAR confirmed the decision.
DeleteExactly AR2 raises his flag b4 VAR correctly confirms the attacker was millimetres ahead of d last defender and excellent spot from AR2
DeleteMilimeters? It was about 0.5 meters
Delete0.5meters is equivalent to 500 millimetres so I don't see ur point
DeleteSomeone made this point on a forum elsewhere. With the Huddersfield red card given by Michael Oliver, for VC in this video: https://streamja.com/N0ej
ReplyDeleteCorner comes in, ball is cleared away to the halfway line then the VC occurs behind the referee's back, play is stopped with the ball still in play. The game later restarts with a free kick to the team who had committed VC - shouldn't it be the other way about (i.e. penalty)?

On the Italian form I read (http://www.arbitri.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=61) they say a referee normally from Serie B will referee one Serie A game per matchday. This was true last week and this, so will give good experience to 'Can B' referees :)
DeleteOT : hello Chefren, apparently Madley was fired by Riley because of disgraceful statement about a handicaped person. So he decided to go in Norway to continue refereeing. Some infos ?
ReplyDeleteI don't know more!
DeleteReferee or not. It was completely sub-human what Madley did. And he deserves all the backlash and consequences that he is facing and will hopefully face for a long time. If the Ref Comm takes the mistaken decision to allow this hateful person to officiate in their country. This would signal that they are tolerant of such abhorrent behavior.
DeleteYes, my post is indeed strongly worded. But Madley is deserving of this. And just to be clear. Yes, I would say these words to his face.

DeleteDidn't look as if Stieler was going to give the YC initially, maybe the 4th official had a word?
I'd say yes. Stieler delayed a few seconds the YC, and surely the 4th official had a better point of view of that illegal use of arms/elbow.
DeleteActually, Flanagan has an argument with him before leaving the pitch.
Actually at 64:55 you can hear someone say "Gelbe Karte", which means Yellow Card in German. :)
DeleteSome doubts about the penalty called by Kehlet in Astana - APOEL, at moment is leading the game to extra time. However, the quality of videos I found is not that good, so better to wait.

We will enjoy this group stage with many top clashes.
DeleteGroup C and H among the most interesting ones.
96 matches with 24 elite referees. Each elite will handle 3 games so 24 matches for 1st category referees. Sounds this logical?
DeleteCompletely agree, Chefren. Group H is going to be very difficult for qualification (between United and Valencia, mostly), and in C between the top three teams (Napoli, Paris and Liverpool). And also group B, I think. Inter will give trouble to Barcelona and Tottenham.
Deleteother referees than the 10 in world cup could have top clash but very difficult to see games for a referee make CL debut
DeleteMatchday 6 probably Bastien
DeleteI am very happy that Crvena zvezda (Red Star) is in such fantastic group. We will see Mbappe, Neymar, Salah and many other great players at our biggest stadium in Belgrade. Would be a spectacle. Goal difference could be -30, but who cares...
DeleteI hope you enjoy the atmosphere and matches Teo :) There should be interesting referee designations for that group as well with many important games.
Delete82': a very crucial decision by Sidiropoulos and AR2, simulation.
ReplyDeleteReplay was not clear, but very likely they got it right.
Chefren how was Sidiropoulos' performance? I might watch the game tomorrow, I didnt had the chance to watch it live.
DeleteI didn't watch the whole game, I missed the opportunity, however reading some commentaries I think it was an expected level with one crucial decision in 82' (simulation).
DeleteRather correct, but replay was not 100% clear.
I will write more tomorrow.
Well, Saudi FF invested a lot in foreign referees...

Fahad Al Mirdasi is still on the FIFA list, this is another strange thing I don't understand... however with this management (is Clattenburg still the head, there?) no big future for Saudi referees.
DeleteWho knows how the things look like if the best referee tried to fix a match having been already selected to WC...
DeleteSomehow Martin Thomsen doesn't really fit into that pattern. I wonder, why he was chosen.
DeletePerhaps DFB didn't want to send any Bundesliga referee (or none was interested in flying to Saudi Arabia).
Deletehttp://www.arabnews.com/node/1363246/sport
Delete“I am under contract to improve the standards of referees in Saudi Arabia, referee and to provide the best match officials around the world to referee every match in the Saudi Pro League” Clattenburg told Arab News (in a recent interview).
Hardly long term objectives set by the Englishman...
Chefren, believe it or not, no one has heard about AlMirdasi since May when he was suspended for allegedly asking for a bribe.
DeleteSome people say he’s in prison!
I feel really sorry for him, I think Saudi Arabia officials are hiding him so that he won’t expose the true story behind what really happened.
Football there is screwed.
Fully agree, chefren!
DeleteThe fruits of Clatts "hard work" to improve the level of native Saudi Arabian officiating is clearly on display every weekend. I mean, just look at those assignments. It's a great time to be a Saudi Arabian referee, right?
DeleteIncredible penalty given by Soares Dias. I think big mistake.

I had the chance to review some of the key situations from today’s games.
ReplyDeleteTwo good second cautions from Steiler.
Phantom red card for Oliver, after advice of 4O or AR1.
The simulation call for Sidiropoulos in 82 is good decision.
Makkelie with good decisive handball penalty call in injury time.
Soares Dias with two soft but supportable penalty calls. Very little contact in either and these will provoke discussion.
Gil Manzano with incorrect penalty, should be simulation.
A mixed night for Europe’s developing referees.
Gerry, about Gil Manzano I looked 20 times the reply and I have doubts , may have touched him immediately and then the player fall after. The contact may have been made. How can you speak of a wrong penalty? You have the eyes of an eagle !!!!!
DeleteGood performance of the Greek referee Sidiropoulos. Pleasant surprise for me, look forward to see him in Champions League matches
ReplyDeleteSome Libertadores antics:
ReplyDeleteDeyverson red card for inciting violence I guess, such a disgraceful behaviour: https://streamable.com/bavac
He behaved like he was on drugs...
DeleteHowever a bit difficult to find a reason for this RC in the LotG...
DeleteWhat on earth kind of striker shoes is the ref even wearing. Those are Nike shoes worn by many attackers and it’s not even matching his uniform brand.
DeleteI watched Burnley - Olympiacos, you can expect a full report later I am busy for the moment, but the take home message for me is...
ReplyDeleteViktor Kassai is back!
Very good performance, he is definitely one of the best match managers in the world. Hopefully he can get some top clashes in CL against this background.
Very pleased for the Hungarian!
Completely agree, Mikael.
DeleteCeltic v Rangers, Sunday 12pm GMT+1
ReplyDeleteReferee: William Collum
AR1: Frank Connor
AR2: Graeme Stewart
Fourth Official: John Beaton
Interesting situation involving Collum last Saturday, where he was very quick to give a RC after a challenge. The RC was appealed by Kilmarnock.
Video: https://youtu.be/xm5wCmNJTAs?t=113
He was then appointed to the Old Firm game before the appeal was heard. If you were being cynical you'd say there was no way they were going to undermine his Old Firm appointment by overturning the RC!
Sure enough the appeal was rejected, prompting a statement from Steve Clarke: http://www.kilmarnockfc.co.uk/Article?id=7629&ShowCat=
Let's hope it all goes smoothly on Sunday...
Two words more aboutm Sidiropoulos, it is reported that he could have issued another YC for simulation to the player who was correctly then booked in 82', a few earlier he had committed another simulation, but outside the box. Sidiropoulos whistled a free kick, however nothing really crucial. He could have sent off as well a player from Atalanta who committed two rough fouls but got only one YC.
ReplyDeleteHowever, overall, I think expected level, if one doesn't want to count beans.
Any news about AAR in Uefa Nations League ?
ReplyDeleteStill no news. I think we will know something soon...
DeleteI confirm AAR are used in the UEFA Nations League
DeleteBart Vertenten (BEL) is appointed for a match 9,10 or 11/09 with AAR :
UEFA NATIONS LEAGUE 2019
09-11.09.2018
REF : VERTENTEN Bart
AA : VANYZERE Rien - NIJSSEN Thibaud
AAR : VISSER Lawrence - VAN DRIESSCHE Bram
4e OFF : DE NEVE Yves
Thank you RPC. So appointments should be revealed soon.
DeleteThis means definitely that we will not see a referee from a very small country at least on MD6 e.g. Barbeno. He is the only FIFA referee of San Marino and has definitely no experience with AAR.
DeleteIndeed, Category 3 were never appointed with AARs at UEFA level. So, I assume we will have only Category 2 referees.
DeleteAbout Barbeno, in San Marino additional assistant referees have been used for some games, but for sure not a big experience there.
Ok, I‘m not into the San Marinese referee;) but that’s clearly a signal.
DeleteCorrect PK whistled by Sánchez Martínez in Gipuzkoa Derby.
ReplyDeleteHowever he issued YC for GK Dmitrovic, IMO it should have been a RC.
Link:
Deletehttps://streamable.com/fnou0
Agree, for me it is a RC. And I think VAR should have intervened, as the movement he makes with his left arm makes it clear it is not a fair challenge for the ball, as obviously he won't reach it at that height.
DeleteHis lower arm is going for the ball -- this is one that has been consistently given as a YC over the last couple of seasons.
DeleteI'm OK with a YC here.

ReplyDeleteHere the penalty by Kehlet in Astana - APOEL.
I waited for a better quality before publishing it.
Interesting to note that the decision was not taken immediately, at first referee looked as he wanted to play on.
Possible AR involvement or a simple change of idea?
In any case, it looks like a wrong call: clear chest (perception mistake).
This penalty led Astana to equalize the score after first leg and then to win on PSO.
This comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteTo me it appears that it hits the hand right in front of the chest as the defender is trying to get it out of the way.
DeleteHaving said that -- I had to frame by frame to even get that much out of it.
Even if hits the hand or arm, the short distance(+ ball speed), the natural position and the ball to hand movement should overweigh the slightly increased body surface.

ReplyDeleteYesterday in serie A game Milan - Roma we had two interesting VAR interventions.
In the first case (60:30 match minute) a goal scored by Milan is then disallowed following a revision (we have accuracy on offside starting from this season). On last season, AR should have been backed and goal allowed. Such situations are impossible to assess for assistant referees live.
Second VAR intervention: match minute 78:00 disallowed goal by Roma, following a previous control by arm, missed by referee. You can see how short the revision is, this could mean that referee had already some doubts and he was looking jkust for confirmation, otherwise, second option is that communication and selection of images by VAR has been for sure excellent. I never saw a so short revision (about 1 or 2 seconds).
So far, in two matchdays and one game of MD3 (yesterday's Milan - Roma) we had VAR interventions only for offside and handballs.
Handball incidents related to goal or penalties occurred in: Chievo - Juventus, Cagliari - Sassuolo, Milan - Roma, Parma - Udinese.
So I would say the field of VAR application has become for sure more narrow, but at the same time handballs stay as "big problem".
I will inform you when we will have the first VAR intervention for a "normal" foul (no handball).
Only 3 VAR interventions in 2 matchdays in Spain.
Delete2 of them in Rayo Vallecano-Sevilla (MD1, Referee Mateu Lahoz, VAR De Burgos Bengoetxea), a goal conceded after wrong offside and a PK conceded when Mateu said DFK)
The other one in Espanyol-Valencia (MD2, Referee Del Cerro Grande, VAR Melero López), when a free-kick resulted in a ghost goal Del Cerro Grande didn't initially concede, corrected by Melero López)
We haven't seen still neither an OFR nor a single RC.
A fourth one last night in Villareal-Girona, with a goal disallowed due to offside (initially given).
DeleteMake it five. Another one for Mateu Lahoz (or better said, Iker de Francisco): goal disallowed due to offside. Very difficult call, IMO impossible to spot live.
DeleteLater on, a possible penalty for Atlético was not given and VAR did not intervene.
Six. Ref initially disallowed the goal for a perceived foul by the attacker but the decision was overturned after an OFR (the first one).
DeleteI wrote a report on Viktor Kassai's performance in Burnley - Olympiakós, it can be found on the link below:

Not a good afternoon for this officiating team in the Scottish second tier: https://twitter.com/PartickThistle/status/1036025973798588417
ReplyDeleteIt seems the only person who thought the ball hadn't cross the line was the AR! Both teams going to the centre circle for the resart yet the referee goes with the AR...
That’s why you don’t use those types of goals with posts on the ground
Deleteshocking really. how come that of the officials saw what happened. it was so obvious. I would really like to hear explanation from the ref
DeleteGood performance by Estrada Fernández in Valencian derby.
ReplyDeleteSome possible SFP in Cardiff - Arsenal. Taylor always with YC.
ReplyDeletePK after OFR (VAR Undiano Mallenco) whistled by Iglesias Villanueva coming from a wrong corner.
ReplyDeleteHow many points should be initially deducted from its mark? (-0.2, -0.3, -0.5)
-0.2 is for a wrong corner leading to goal. Most likely it will be -0.1.
