  1. So, as long as the game is confirmed, it seems as FC Universitatea Craiova wont be punished for what happened. I can't believe that.
It is also true that there is a short time (only one week) and maybe we could get some news on next days before that game...
Good luck to Dennis Johan Higler, the game is also sonorous for this context (Romanian side against a big Greek team).

    1. @chefren by not punished, you mean not expelled from competition this moment? Of course they will be punished severely.
It is true that terrible and completely unacceptable thing happened, but everything should be considered from different perspectives. Would it be fair for the club, players, normal fans and romanian football that they are punished so hard because of some idiot? I think maybe 3 home games with empty stadium and big financial sanction is enough this time. But just my opinion, we shall see...

      p. s. Fourth referee, according to the rules, can change main referee in case of injury, so it isnt so strange that game continued.

  2. I expected a more experienced referee for the Craiova - AEK match. Anyway, good luck to mr Higler. He will need it.

It's sad to read 46 matches so far (10 CL and 36 EL) without a Greek referee.

    1. A swap between Higler and Van Boekel, for example.

However, Higler is not a referee who is easily impressed.

      Delete
    2. That is true, however, Higler is also a referee who loses control quickly

      Delete
    3. You think so? I don't agree. If you'd say he has not much charisma, I agree.

      Delete
    4. I get the impression that Higler likes to 'let the game flow' and therefore 'misses' some fouls. He doesn't seem to have the ability to deal with the following protests and that's where he loses control, so it does have to do with his lack of charisma. It also seems to me as if he is afraid of making big decisions (Supercup: sending off Hendrix, disallowing 2-0), which does of course not help. For me, a better approach for a referee who lacks charisma / natural authority (like Higler) would be to be quite strict to keep everything under control.

    5. Higler even almost lost control in the friendly between Feijenoord and Southampton a few weeks ago... No material for a match like this and I’ll hold my breath.

      Delete
    6. Unfortunately, fake news from Jan here. Serdar Gözübüyük was in charge of Feyenoord vs Southampton.

I also think that it is unfair to say Higler is afraid of making big decisions. In both cases brought forward by anonymous, the referee made the decision which was consistent with his own (disciplinary) line, but not in line with most other referees. You can call them wrong decisions, but I think it shows a referee not afraid to make his own decisions.

To the wider point about Higler: I think he is a relatively young referee who is still developing his soft skills. IMO he has made good progress in the past couple of years. I would hope he continues his progress and wish him good luck.

    7. Ah my dear Thomas, evidently a slip of the pen. Of course I meant Feijenoord playing Scottish Angers handled by Higler, my bad.
The heart of the message however stays upright, so no fake news whatsoever.

      Delete
    8. French Angers of course, French!

      Delete
    9. Just in time, or I would have had your head ;-)

      Delete
    10. @Thomas
Well, those decisions did lead to him losing control because he was not able to manage protests.
Also, it wasn't consistent with his line because shortly after possible 2YC he gave YC for an almost identical foul.

  4. Ot:

Guardiola got yellow carded for his protests after Gomez dangerous challenge on Silva not being punished.

Other than that, pretty calm game for Atkinson with 1 booking for De Bruyne.

  7. I would like to congratulate the owners of this site for publishing with excellent accuracy all appointments. Well done! Is there any Greek ref that has been appointed for a return fixture next week? I find strange that Papapetrou has been on the list yet. Kominis is also a category two ref.

  8. Admins, is there any chance to find the LoTG questions test in Zagreb for Elite referees?

  9. OT: IFAB published the following in their web regarding situation we all have seen here:

There has been much debate about whether, at a goal kick, the goalkeeper is permitted to ‘lift’ the ball to a team mate to head or chest it back to the goalkeeper to catch and then put into play. The views of technical and refereeing experts about whether this is within the ‘spirit’ of the Laws is divided so the matter will be discussed by The IFAB. Until then, this practice should not be permitted nor should it be penalised. If it occurs the referee should order the goal kick to be re-taken (but without any disciplinary action).

  10. 2 interesting situations in Molde-Aris (30-32'). A head of one Molde player was bleeding and he got a bandage on his head. Then he entered the pitch obviously without permission from the ref and got a YC. One minute later Aris GK made crucial mistake and created a chance for Molde. The two players (and not the GK) were nearest to goal line, so the goal was confirmed. Very good concentration by AR1, although Greeks protested.

  11. Torino - Shakhter minute 15' very controversial goal allowed by Stefański. Player jumped on the opponent to score by head following a corner kick action. I think quite clear irregular action... protests by Belarusan side.

  12. Generally very good refereeing for José Luis Munuera Montero at Sparta Praha - Trabzonspor game. Good control and nice approach to the players. Promising Spanish referee.

  13. Generally so bad refereeing for Alexandre Boucaut at Sarajevo-Bate game. He was out of control. Very controversial first goal for Bate (ball in/out) and penalty in this situation (awful decision): https://twitter.com/i/status/1159543976480903168.

    1. holding continuing inside the penalty area, correct penalty but it should also be a RC

      Delete
    2. I think that ball is in and penalty is incorrect.

      Delete
    3. Fully correct penalty as the holding indeed continued inside the penalty area but a big technical mistake that a YC instead of a RC was shown as that was DOGSO and there was no attempt to play the ball.

      Delete
    4. @Unknown How can you say that it's an incorrect penalty? Clear holding and DOGSO that continued inside the penalty area. The only (big) mistake in that situation was to show a YC instead of a RC. What are your arguments against the PK?

      Delete
    5. Penalty is correct, the holding ends inside the box.
However this was a DOGSO without a genuine attempt to play ball, so RC to be issued (crucial mistake). I think referee made an assessment based on the chances to control the ball, but for sure attacker would have reached it before keeper.

      Delete
  14. Martin Schüttengruber with an okayish performance in Warsaw. Greek players committed a lot of fouls. 4 YC given all for Atromitos' players and all correctly given. Referee shouted a lot of times during the game. Generally players were aggressive against the referee all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Sergey Ivanov (Partizan-Malatia) I would say 8,5. Good approach, good management, all bookings correct (7 or 8), always close but not too close. Very fast game, both teams have fast players, heavy rain - lot of things that made his job not easy, but he dealt with all of them excellent. He showed that is in an very good form. 3 penalty appeals for home side correctly denied (maybe one yellow card for simulation could be issued), and one penalty for partizan correctly given for punishable handball (not tough decision, though).
If we compare him and Martins who was also in Belgrade two days ago, I can only say that I am very sad and disappointing that he didn't whistle game Crvena zvezda-Kobenhavn. He is undoubtedly much better referee than Portuguese. Also i have to add that, if I am not wrong, his ARs didn't make any mistake and they had several very close decisions to make in, again, one very fast match.

  16. Any reports about Higler's performance??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He had a good performance on an easy-going match. No harsh tackles, no protests, no penalty area incidents. Good foul detection and disciplinary control (2 cautions at 81', 90+3').

Both AR's with correct offside calls.
