  1. Definitely no English official’s in the Europa League after today’s announcement

    1. Premier League players must self isolate after travelling abroad for 10 days. This should apply to officials as well?

      Delete
    2. They have to isolate except for training and matches. The 10 days also is cut in half if they provide a negative covid test. So it may still be possible for English and Scottish referees to be appointed

  3. I hope so cuz in CL I think based on MD performances that both Taylor and Oliver deserve KO stage games.
And in EL based on MD performances that both Kavanaugh and Pawson deserve a KO stage match

    3. Yeah. KAVANAH seems to have some fans.

    4. His fans must watch Ajax-Lille then

    5. Who is better for you, Taylor or Oliver?

      Delete
    6. Why, KAVANAH of course ;-)

      Delete
    7. I prefer Taylor.

  4. Marciniak and Hategan
I think they are suspended by the committee,
    Kuipers on the wave...

    1. Marciniak was sick for Covid, now he is recovering, it s probalbly that he will be back to 2nd Leg CL

      Delete
    2. Hategan has a problem, maybe sick or injured. He has an appointment on saturday with his ARs, but he was replaced.

      Delete
    3. Ugh, can circumstances never go right for Hategan? He has the worst luck.

      Delete
    4. Having matches on 6 out of 6 MDs in the CL group stage is not bad luck.

      Delete
    5. Everything went perfect for Hategan until that 6 (out of 6) UCL match in Paris...

  5. Elite referees without appointments in this two weeks:
    - Oliver and Taylor: Probably due to travel restrictions - on the other hand the VARs and Collum's team are travelling.
    - Bastien: unclear
    - Aytekin, Marciniak, Skomina: Injured/sick/recovering
    - Orsato: unclear - Arsenal-Benfica instead of a second game for Kuipers looked sensible
    - Hategan: Maybe still related to the Paris events

Referees in EL R32 without CL this season:
    Gestranius, Visser and Sanchez

    1. Good analysis.
The very interesting points are indeed about Orsato (performance principale after his last CL game?) and Bastien (last EL game with too many controversy?).
The rest should be explained by travel restrictions (the English officials) and injury / health problems (Skomina, Marciniak, Aytekin).
Last but not least, Hategan still waiting for positive news about the events in Paris.
I think he can be appointed, indeed he was fourth to Kovács, but maybe Rosetti doesn't want to appoint him with a different assistant referee, all is about Octavian Sovre.

    2. To add, among the Category 1 who attended the online course, the missing names so far are: BIH Peljto Irfan, FRA Buquet Ruddy, LTU Rumsas Donatas, POR Lopes Martins Tiago Bruno, SCO Madden Robert.

      Delete
    3. I think that Ekberg's 2nd appointment is a replacement for Madden. That would explain the Scottish FO.

      Delete
    4. With respect to Hategan, his absence seems related to the Paris incidents. If they wanted, UEFA could have replaced his AR who is currently under investigation, but it looks more like UEFA is not happy that their image was associated with that case and wanted to keep Hategan and his team away from the public for a while.

  6. If you follow the German League, Siebert is one of the best and gets the most important games during the last months. So I think, it is a good choice.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I have to agree with Felix here.
Siebert is one of the best referees in Bundesliga at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm wondering if madden was due to have ekberg's match but has withdrawn because his ar tested positive and he's isolating. Based on beaton being 4th official and the English var

    1. Bobby Madden was meant to be the ref but AR David Roome tested positive on return after Madden, Roome and Stewart (Ar2) travelled to greece for Panathinaikos v Olympiakos at the request of UEFA after the greek fa contacted them looking for officials. Madden and Stewart met all UEFA protocol but Scottish Government guidelines have different interpretations of close contact. The SFA only realised this on sunday after stewart was AR at Easter Road for Hibs v Hamilton but Bobby Madden was due in Dingwall for Ross County v Celtic

    4. Anonymous, are you the former BR Scotland, aka Brian McGinlay? :)

  9. It is kind of strange that the English Refs are not allowed to travel but we have to sets of VAR on show as well as mike Riley being an observer.... it is possible for them to offsite with thier normal Trio and Forth official and the VAR team will come from another nation... well it is possible but certainly not probable.. this is just to reduce the number of teams that fly out at ago for a team because that is the information going round that the number of persons involved for a single English appointment

    ReplyDelete
  10. I am really surprised to see Makkelie as FO with Kuipers

    ReplyDelete
  11. Do we think the English VARS are possibly not in the stadium but instead doing it remotely from Stockley park?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That is indeed an interesting possibility under current circumstances.

      Delete
    2. They definitely are not doing it from stockley park. The best they could do is not to be at the stadium but remotely in Nyon as trailed in the final matches of Group Stage but it still involves traveling

      Delete
  12. The only explanation for appointing top refs like Makkelie, Turpin and Hategan as fourth officials is that UEFA is preparing them for the possibility of doing both referee and fourth official roles at Euro.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I always think Kuipers is the best referee in the world in the last decade. The most important thing to be an outstanding referee is to have consistent performance. I could not recall a single game that Kuipers was bad. If possible, I wish to see him in CL final again, although nobody is appointed in CL final twice so far.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I couldn't agree more! He is simply the best referee in history. Despite of so many finals in his palmares he's still fully focused and motivated. Never arousing controversy due to his behaviour, always professional. What a legend!

      Delete
    2. Not sure if 'best referee in history' but once he retires (I guess that after Euro) he should be remembered as what he already is: A true legend of European refereeing. My broken English can't express with words how much of a pleasure is watching him refereeing.

      Delete
    3. Kuipers is indeed a great referee, but another final for him detracts from the new batch that is performing well. Kuipers already did two EL finals. For me a seconden CL final would be too much and a more logical and deserved appointment for Makkelie, Turpin or Taylor. They are the new talented generation of referees. Makkelie has an advantage with already the EL final on his list. More interestingly, who will officiate the EL final this year?

      Delete
    4. Having a referee for Europa league IMO is not a challenge in the slightest for the committee... they have a lot of referees who could adequately perform that. For example even Cakir doesn’t have that to his name or even Orsato who reffed the CL final last year’, not mention Turpin who has well been over looked for at least a final, expected the super cup of 2019 but it was given to his country woman, we have Hategan, have Marchiniak, have Taylor and Oliver and even Damir Skomina, I don’t think he has that also and of course the front runner for the CL this season Mateu Lahoz

      Delete
    5. Indeed, and that is why I used "if possible". I do not consider Turpin and Taylor as the top candidate of this year CL final. Instead, I would predict either Lahoz (if no Spanish team participate in final), or Makkelie (it might be a little early for Makkelie but he is a super star now). EL final obviously has more options, like Turpin, Taylor, Del Grande

      Delete
    6. It all depends on the teams that reach the final. For this reason my prediction will be:

      CL: Lahoz or Makkelie
      EL: Turpin or Taylor

      Delete
  14. The explanation can be found in the fact that Visser initially was appointed Kuipers’ 4th official in Athens Thursday night, but swapped to main ref in ManU game after the 1st leg result.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Makkelie CL final
    Kuipers EURO final
    Gozubuyuk EL final

    1. Absolutely no way that Gozubuyuk gets EL final this season.

      Delete
    2. Haha, Anonymous seems to be a quite patriotic Dutchman :) Then again, maybe Anonymous just has an ironic intent.
The combination of three Dutchmen handling the European 2020 finals is impossible in itself, Gozubuyuk on EL final is simply ridiculous.

      Delete
    3. Why ridiculous? Just impossible this year. But Don't insult.

      Delete
    4. What exactly is insulting in my message? Can’t I be of the opinion that Gozubuyuk in UEL final is ridiculous?

      Delete
    5. Your opinion shows a lack of respect toward a highly ranked UEFA ref. You must be polite.

      Delete
    6. No, just a clear expression of how I see this matter. I would call many names of average 1st category refs mentioned for UEL final ridiculous. But no problem if you have different opinion.

  19. What is the reason, that the referee from belgium (visser) has two VAR‘s from the netherlands?
belgium is one of countries with the most experience with VAR-system.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They lack experience in Europe, that is the only reason I can give. But what I cannot explain is why Belgium has 2 FIFA VAR's (Boucaut and Lambrechts) and why the UEFA don't use them.. Instead they use Dieperink as AVAR, a non-fifa referee.

      Delete
    2. If Dieperink, non-FIFA, is appointed to Champions League, what was the point of creating the FIFA VMO category?

    3. That's a clear foul! Sorry but Jug is too fat. He can't follow game properly.

    4. No doubt. DOGSO. The ref started to run after the pass, without prediction of the development of the play.

      Delete
    5. IMO clear DOGSO RC. Bad anticipation.

      Delete
    6. Some people probably will say, that the attacker was running towards the sideline...

      But for me also DOGSO.
Maybe no VAR intervention, because there is no clear leg contact and no clear push - and the intensity of charging mostly is a matter of interpretation by the referee.

  21. Hello, can anyone give me a reason why UFEA decided to appoint appoint 2 of the best referees in the world for the Arsenal vs Benfica matches (Cüneyt Çakır and Björn Kuipers), yet they picked less experienced referees for the champions league.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In my opinion, Arsenal vs Benifca is a CL level game, so this makes sense to appoint these two experienced referees. For CL KO stage first leg, it is not a surprise at all to see some new faces. All of them have lots of experience in CL group stage already.I would say most of them are brilliant appoint by the committee. For CL second leg, I think you will see more faces who you think are more experienced , like Orsato, Turpin, Oliver, Taylor and Hatagen.

      Delete
    2. The CL R16 is spread over 5 weeks (with one spare week in between). So although all top referees are expected to have one of those matches, it would mean only 1 match in 5 weeks for them. Therefore it makes sense to also use them in EL matches, either in R32 or R16 depending on their CL appointments.

  27. First goal Ajax-Lille came from a wrong free kick by Collum. Then he missed a possible foul by Ajax. After the bad penalty by Kruzliak last week Lille sure have every right to complain.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. IMO correct free kick. I don't think the Lille player gets the ball and surely brings his opponent down with the trailing leg.

      Delete
    2. Correct free kick I think. Lille defender does not touch the ball, but he does pinch the Ajax player with his legs and brings him down. Also correct decision to allow the goal and not whistle for a foul. Last week's penalty was indeed debatable, but this goal is correctly allowed IMO.

      Delete
    3. There was nothing wrong with the free kick or the decision to allow the goal. At least supportable and in my opinion both better decisions. Also, let's just assess Collum for his performance tonight and not anything that happened last week with Kruzliak.

      Delete
    4. After rewatching it during half-time I think it's not a clear error. I still prefer play on because imo defender does play the ball, but I guess a free kick at least isn't completely wrong. The penalty situation just before half-time however... clear pen imo

      Delete
    5. Free kick was justified, but Blind makes a foul on Botman in the box so the goal had to be disallowed IMO. Together with that, Lille defenitely deserved a penalty.

      Delete
    6. Not a foul by Blind IMO, but an acceptable physical play.
It also happened before the free kick execution, so I am not sure whether the VAR could have intervened?

      Delete
    7. Good point about the VAR not being able to intervene, Philipp. I thought the same, I think VAR can not intervene. But for me it is a foul from Bling, he has his eyes on the defender and intends to block him.

      Delete
  28. Minute 35' in Napoli - Granada, Stieler had to face a confrontation between two players, we can even talk about a possible violent conduct. The German referee literaly put himself between the players trying to stop them, but at first glance it didn't work. For what we see in Italian games, the way of issuing the yellow cards was too late, he had to be quicker. In Bundesliga it is a totally different affair. Now many cards are being shown in a few seconds.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Possible penalty for Lille in 46’ minute but none awarded. Defender runs into attacker in the box.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. IMO there’s much more room for penalty tonight than last week with Kruzliak

      Delete
    2. Agreed, would have preferred penalty here. Collum's decision is however supportable, so Kavanagh was correct not to intervene though.

      Delete
    3. Yes, a possible penalty, but not a 100% situation, because the contact is mostly initiated by the attacker - although the defender comes from behind an needs to be careful.
Also not completely clear, where the foul occurred. The leg contact could have been just outside, while the hip contact was inside.

      Delete
  30. Well, Lille is definitely unlucky with refereeing...

  48. Siebert: I'm really in trouble to describe this performance. It seemed to me, starting from the 35' minute in first half, that this was not the kind of game he would like to officiate. Regarding crucial decisions everything was OK, and I must also say a very good performance by both assistant referees. But in terms of game control, management, prevention of players, he didn't convince at all if you ask me. He looked to be too passive in situations in which his strong presence was required. As said, from 35' in first half one can even talk about a lost control of the game, at least for some minutes. I think he is basically used to different games, like other German referees, and maybe he needs still experience, but at moment I wouldn't still appoint him for very hot games because I feel he could go in trouble. However, regarding the law by book and the cautions issued, he was definitely OK, with a particular attention to injury time.

    1. Games with many cards are hard to assess. Where the cards correct? Yes probably all of them, but could there have been red cards for the head butts? Yes but maybe not 100%. Did the cards come because of his way of controlling the game or his way of choosing fouls? Did he show leadership that was good enough for these players? Difficult question to answer with a game like that.

    ReplyDelete
  52. @90+7': I don't think it's delay of restart (doesn't make sense in the game context) or a gesture of dissent - but simply frustration. So it could still be seen as lack of respect, but IMO that is not mandatory and avoiding it shows some understanding for the game - a 2nd YC would not be useful for anyone there.
Endangering the safety of spectators is not really an offence in its own right.

    1. I would have to agree with you on that it should have been a red card. However, i do feel that it probably wouldn't be considered clear and obvious and would be up to the referee to decide the severity of the challene

      Delete
    2. Unusual situation, so probably no blueprint for that, but I also see strong arguments for SFP there.
"Clear and obvious" is irrelevant here, because there was an OFR anyway, where the referee had the free choice of card colour.

    3. The more I see it, there more convinced I am that I would have issued a RC if I were the referee.

      Delete

  67. I didn't watch Gil Manzano's game but the current guideline is to finish the game if the ball goes out of play even one second after the added time has gone and there were no further stoppages. So if the ball went out in 93:01 or so and there was no substitution or injury in the meantime, he was right with final whistle.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Not true. In Salzburg-Red Star 2-2, two years ago, Cakir allowed home side to take corner at 95.25 (there were 5 minutes of stoppage time and no interruptions meanwhile), after giving 5 mins of stoppage time. So it is possible and depends of the ref and of the team that has the chance to score. Atalanta coach correctly said yesterday that people who didn't play football shouldn't be refs because they don't understand the play as players do. I am sure Del Cerro will get good mark for tonight but if Red Star scored from that corner kick his season would be finish. This was the best option for himself. Milan pass through after scoring 2 goals from PK and one own goal, and in both matches opponent had one player less. But when Ibra kick the ball away after offside, there is no second YC for him!

      Delete
    2. There were no specific guidelines back then and they are in use now. Even laws have been changed, so even more instructions.

Again, if the ball went out of play after the added time and there were no stoppages in the meantime, Gil Manzano HAD TO finish the game according to current guidelines.

      Delete
    3. I disagree that referees should follow the "technical guide", which you just mentioned, all the time in the match. I am not a fan of either of these two teams, but I would say Manzano's decision is not smart to disallow a corner happened 8 seconds exceed the official stoppage time.

      Delete
    4. You can only debate if the guideline is smart or not but it's clear and all referees I saw this season followed it. I also think that such an instruction is something needed to avoid subjectivity in this matter. Don't overcomplicate things. The instruction is clear and every (UEFA) referee knows it and applies it. Wanting a referee to break it is wanting him to act against UEFA - won't happen.

      Delete
    5. Well, let me clarify again, I am not a fan of either of these two teams. There was no subjectivity on my previous response. If you think this is good decision by the referee, I am totally fine with this.

For months we don’t see or hear anything from our friends Mareska and Nole, but when Red Star is harm done in their view they spam the blog with the most outrageous and paranoid messages. Do you really imply that Manzano (Manzano, not Del Cerro) and UEFA want Red Star out in favor of Milan, and deliberately acted to achieve that? Ridiculous and pathetic comment!

    1. Also, if this was any other game and Jovanovic was the referee and such comments appeared here, they would defend him with their life. Try to act and formulate objectively.

      Delete
    2. I would say this is a bad decision no matter which referee is in the same situation. If give a corner, then allow the corner to take; if decide to end the game, then do not give the corner. Simple rule.

      Delete
    3. @Sam If you formulate it like that no one will disagree with you. It is, however, the ridicolous words that are chosen that lead to the comments above (and the fact that they are nowhere to be seen when a decision leads to advantage for a Serbian team / when Jovanovic has a bad performance).

      Delete
    4. @Anonymous fair enough, as I said, I would use "terrible" or "ridiculous" or "bad" to describe this situation. All my opinion is only on the incident itself and not relate to any referee. If Kuipers (best referee in the last decade in my mind) in the same situation, I would use the same word on him

      Delete
    5. As blog administrator, of course I'm always happy when people write here, but indeed I can't disagree with Anonymous and what he wrote. There are some people who write there only when there is to blame a referee, and I strongly condemn that. This means that readers are just fans and not referees, they don't understand the difficulty of the job. Given that there is freedom and all are free to write, I want just to say that I would be very happy to read frome the same people, sometimes, nice words about referees, when they do a good job. Becuase it is easy to underline only the mistakes...
I'm really disappointed for such approach of the blog, when a personal interest is clearly put before the rest.
However, luckily this is not for the majority of the readers and I want to thank you all for that.
