  1. Wolfsburg - Arsenal: Projkovska (Raczkowski, Borkowski)
Lyon - Juventus: Hussein (Zwayer, Borsch)

  2. What do you think, which referees will participate in the European Championship in the summer? Probably 12 referees will be needed.

    1. For me Staubli, Frappart, Hussein, Lehtovaara, Huerta de Aza, Martincic, Adamkova, Persson and Welch should be safe. But there are many possible candidates.

What about Kulcsar? Is she injured?
      What about Monzul?
Pustovoytova will probably not be able to participate.

    2. Huerta de Aza, Lehtovaara, Foster, Adamkova, Frappart, Staubli, Projkovska, Hussein had the quarterfinals.
So Foster and Projkovska probably need to be added to your list.
Maybe Martincic, Persson, Welch and Monzul will referee CL SFs - and then we would have exactly 12 names.
Kulcsar's last international match is nearly a year ago, so quite doubtful, whether she will attend the EURO. Also Pustovoytova seems impossible at the moment.

    3. What is going on with Kulcsar? Her missing from international matches for almost a year is unusual. Anyone from Hungary knows whether she is injured, ill or pregnant?

  3. 54' Bayern goal checked for a minute but given. It looks like the goal is scored directly by an elbow and therefore handball. Either I'm missing something or the VAR has

    ReplyDelete
  4. 1-2 goal for Bayern scored with the elbow, but no intervention by VAR, who probably only checked offside.
    (Conclusive replay around 56:00)

    3. It does not have to be deliberate. There is contact between the arm and the ball immediately before the goal was scored.

      Delete
  5. Min. 77: same as Oliver last week, Staubli stopped play for a foul against the Bayern goalkeeper one second before the ball entered the goal, so VAR could not intervene in case there is an issue. Both Oliver and Staubli are elite referees. Is UEFA not instructing them to wait one extra second, just in case?

    1. The goalkeeper was clearly in control of the ball, you could argue that this offence was quite blatant (certainly compared with last week's)

      Delete
    2. Yes, it was, but it only takes one second to wait, same as with offside - that is the whole idea behind VAR having a chance to correct it, in case simething goes wrong on the field. If the referee blows the whistle too quickly, the potential opportunity for correction is gone. If we a referee can wait 2-3 seconds for advantage, why not in these situations, especially with VAR?

      Delete
    3. There is a clear upside of whistling immediately: players know that the referee is certain and that the decision can not be overturned. So if the foul is blatant, it's counterproductive to delay the call.

    4. That is how Kulbakov unfortunately ended his career advancement... there is a say "better safe than sorry".

  6. Just to mention: 91553 spectators (world record) attended Barcelona - Real; beautiful and impressive for female football

  7. OT question

Is it possible that a referee is appointed to a QF if a club from its country is in the same part of the schedule?

Example: Siebert (GER) - can he officiate Liverpool-Benfica (winner will possibly meet Bayern in SF) or will committee always try to avoid these pairings?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, is it.
In CL 2018/19 Mateu Lahoz (ESP) officiated Liverpool Porto (QF, first leg), Liverpool won and met Barcelona in SF.
This year it could happens again with the almost sure Taylor’s appointment for VIL-BAY (connected to LIV-BEN) or/and for a Spanish ref (Del Cerro/Manzano)in LIV-BEN

  8. Did you see the assistant's position during the penalty at Barca - Real?

  9. I was wondering on how it is possible to be appointed as assistant ref for a UWCL quarterfinal after failing two consecutive fitness tests in Austria(as normally this is a reason to be taken from the national list in AT)...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Did she fail men's or women's fitness test? If a woman referee tries and fails men's test, but passes the women's test, she is allowed to referee women's matches, but not men's matches. If she failed women's test, she should not be appointed until she re-takes and passes it.

  10. So it's Switzerland-Serbia again at the World Cup. This will need a sensible choice.

    1. Lets give that game to a German ref on the list ;)

    2. Some more repetitions from the WC 2018 with the referee from last time:
      France-Denmark (Ricci), Brazil-Serbia (Faghani), Brazil-Switzerland (Ramos), Portugal-Uruguay (Ramos).
Possibly also France-Peru (Mohamed) and Peru-Denmark (Gassama)

      Delete
    3. Brych in VAR maybe :).

Jokes aside, this match will be the most problematic and needs to have top ref, maybe someone from CONMEBOL this time maybe.

      Delete
    4. After seeing the draw, the first thing Rosetti did was calling Collina not to appoint a UEFA referee for this match :)

      Delete
    5. If FIFA has a sense of humour, they will appoint Gassama.

      Delete
    6. Now that I think, it will be hard to appoint ref for this match.

Maybe someone from CONMEBOL, but that is also in doubt cause it could influence Brazil's position.

Maybe even Orsato is posibility, I just dont want to see that ref in charge is from CONCACAF or CAF because they are not that good and let's face it, this match could turn ugly at any given time.

    7. Referee Serbia Switzerland Daniel Siebert, VAR Bastian Dankert

    8. Makkelie/Taylor if uefa , rapqliqna otherwise

  11. Most big matches happen on MD 2, so we need the big names refereeing on MD1 for a good start, on MD2 for the big matches and on MD3 for the decisive matches. ;)

Furthermore the allocation of the teams from the play-offs means that there is no problem in using e.g. Makkelie and del Cerro Grande for the UEFA play-offs (but no English referee), Faghani for CRC-NZL (but not Mateu, Siebert or Sato) and Mateu for AFC-PER (but not Turpin).

  12. Portugal - Ecuador and Argentina - Mexico

    Very delicate matches.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Siebert would be my perfect referee for the opening game, stylistically.
Final Arab cup ref. He is often appointed to potentially hot clashes.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Siebert is not one Brych.

  14. Top matches that will also need top refs:

    Argentina - Mexico
    France-Dennmark
    Spain-Germany
    Croatia - Belgium
    Switzerland - Serbia
    Brazil-Serbia
    Portugal - Uruguay

And maybe England if they get in group with Scotland or Wales.

  15. Romanian FA announced today (https://www.frf.ro/recomandate/iuliana-demetrescu-candidata-pentru-fifa-womens-world-cup-2023/) that FIFA established a list of 56 referees pre-selected for the Women's World Cup 2023. Any news from other FAs on who are those 56 referees?

    1. I tried to get some info from various sources, but nothing.
100% strictly confidential! I guess there can be some particular choices inside, especially from UEFA, looking at the current categories... :)

      Delete
    2. If they publicly posted the name of their own candidate, it cannot be confidential. National FAs have the choice whether to release the info. Maybe other FAs will do it in the next days.

  16. Hugh Dallas so far confirmed for Chelsea - Real Madrid. It will be impossible to know whether Hategan was originally planned for this game or not. No change of observer.

  17. Hmm Netherlands vs Senegal is the 1st game of the tournement. Maybe a COMNEBOL ref or Faghani to officiate it.

  18. The opening game is Senegal vs Netherlands.

  19. Pitana retired in fifa referees list 2022 but referee in conmboel competitions

  20. For me the one and only UEFA ref who should be considered for the final given the current form (not talking about 8 months ahead) and in your reasoning could get the opener is out because his home nation plans in that game ;). My guess for NED-SEN would be one of the following 3 : Faghani, Beath or Tobar

    ReplyDelete
  21. In my opinion siberet from Germany will the best choice for Qatar vs Ecuador besides Beath from Australia for Senegal vs Netherlands and Mario Escobar from Guatemala for England vs iran besides leodan Gonzalez from Uruguay for usa vs winner of uefa play off

  22. https://www.vbox7.com/play:2eee0c20d6&start=182 what you think about this situation from second league in Bulgaria?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I’m already curious who will be in charge of the hot (dirty) clashes at the WC, between South American teams (or for example Ecuador-Portugal). IMO the appointments that tell us the most about trust. Teams that put a lot pressure on a referee, and want to control the referee instead of the other way around.

My guess: the UEFA refs that are often used in hot clashes, and well-known for their match control / player management, like Marciniak, Mateu Lahoz (if selected), Makkelie and Orsato. And outside Europe, Faghani, of course…

  24. Appointment news from German Elite referees:
Aytekin seems to be replaced today after just coming back in a friendly international.
Siebert has a 1. Bundesliga match today.
Stieler makes his comeback in 3. Liga (after injury).
Zwayer works as VAR this weekend.
Summary: Siebert and Zwayer could work any day next week, for the other two a further international appointment this season seems unlikely.

  25. I just checked the 1-2 by Bayern scored with elbow, clear touch, arm close to body but still punishable because goal directly scored .
Very difficult case for VAR, but he should have spotted that.
It is very rare that last touch before goal is a deflection (by arm - elbow) and not an "isolated" attempt to score by that. This made it quite hard to see for Fedayi San. In addition, I think this was clear only in the replay in 56:00, indeed, and it wasn't checked at all because VAR couldn't expect that. These are the situations based on which you can judge how much good is a VAR (check always everything, always expect the unexpected).
More generally, so far the committee has ensured VAR in this stage of the competition, but without making particular choices, in the meaning that we didn't see all trusted name. Rather, it looks like the principle was to have VAR but so far no more than that.
In addition to referees selection for this summer's EURO, it will be interesting to know which VAR will be selected for the competition.
I would bet top names. We can also conclude that nowadays in UEFA refereeing we have many different degrees of appointments, based on the importance of the games. And we are right if we state that there is indeed a pool of very trusted VARs, but of course they can make mistakes as well. Basically, I think this can (mostly) depend on how much VAR developed in the country of the referee involved.

    1. One could also say, that the VAR task is more difficult in women's football, because there are less protests.
In men's football you can be quite sure, that there are complaints in some form, when there is a controversial or clearly wrong decision, while the referee decisions are more often accepted by the women players.
Of course only as a general observation, there surely are exemptions in both directions.
E.g., if one of the defenders would have claimed handball in Paris, it would have been more likely, that the VAR checked it. And I could imagine, that a male player might have done that, even if he saw only a small chance that there was a handball.

About the EURO, I am not sure: Could be, that we see the top VARs there. But I could also imagine, that it will be the second row, i.e. the best, who won't go to Qatar. And that could indeed include those, who worked in the CL QF.

    2. sorry chefren, but here i must disagree strongly: this is anything but difficult for VAR!!! what you do is you try to find excuses. why?
the should be a routine standard procedure. offside in app? no! foul in app? no! handball in app? yes. punishable? yes!

IMO this is var "beginner stuff". checking whether a goal is correct or not...with simple yes/no questions mostly anyone on this blog should be able to detect that this goal is scored incorrectly...

      Delete
    3. Yes, it is indeed basic stuff for VAR: goal scored directly by arm. Same as in the CWC final last year, so all VAR should have learned to automatically check that.

      Delete
    4. Of course I didn't want to justify the mistake, I just always like to explain why it happens. And it is indeed more difficult to be concentrated when even players don't notice that. But the mistake is very clear and of course terrible for a VAR, more than a crucial one!

  26. OT:I will again continue with Doveri's criticism.

I mean the level of leniency, the fouls, protests, pushing and other stuff that he is allowing is unbeliavable, I don't think that God forgives as much as Doveri.

    Chelsea-Real: Siebert (Dankert)

    Braga-Rangers: Bastien (Delajod)

    1. BTW, if we exclude Kulbakov, Aytekin, Stieler, Massa, Hategan, Karasev and Cakir, we have only left 25 Elite referees for the 24 QF matches, so nearly everyone should get a match (if there are no double appointments or First Group referees involved).

    2. Siebert is one calamity.

      Delete
  28. Artur Soares Dias without a game in Portugal this weekend. His normal AR's (Licínio e Soares) will work only as AVAR. Probably a european game for the portuguese.

  29. Alfredo Trentalange had a car accident, fortunately he is not in danger of life, but it is said it could have been by far worse.
He was appointed as observer for Olympique Lyonnais (FRA) - West Ham United FC (ENG) return leg on 14 April, now surely there will be a replacement I think.

    1. Chefren, what website do you use to see the observers appointments? I don`t think it appear something on UEFA official site.

      Delete
    2. It's UEFA FAME, a platform to UEFA officials. Not accessible without a password.

      Delete
    3. If that is the case, whoever has a password and is able to see the observers can also see the referees?

      Delete
    4. I heard about UEFA FAME. But that`s the point. Isn`t it open only to match officials?

      Delete
    5. Isn't it quite obvious that the source of such information should not be discussed here to support that it remains a source?
Let's just be happy, that we get this reliable information regularly here.

      Delete
    6. If the person who has access to FAME saw the names of the observes up to April 14, the same person must have also seen the names of the referees, so why only share the names of observers, but not the referees?

      Delete
    7. The referees for confidential games (like Cl) are added only two days before the game, when they are revealed in public, that's all! Before that time, you can read only observers.

      Delete
  30. When are they CL QF appointments announced?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Roberto tobar from chile will referee today in Saudi Arabia king's cup the first semi final between hilal vs shabab
