Is Del Cerro Grande a CL final candidate? He was the 4th official at last year's CL final and also at the EURO final. Now observed by Rosetti. A pattern we have seen before?

DeleteSpanish observations in CL for Rosetti, after Gil Manzano, now Del Cerro Grande. On paper, an expected appointment, as we discussed, but after two Spanish already appointed in other games of this round, it sounded a bit more unlikely. Philipp was right in his reasoning about the Spanish being a candidate for WC and so having to be appointed at least for a Round of 16. The game will be very intense as most of readers reported here in past days, and I think that for the style we saw by Del Cerro in recent times, not the best choice. But surely he must get a big test under the eyes of the head of committee.
ReplyDeleteIn other game we easily guessed that a referee from first legs would have got another assignment and we were right, but definitely not about the game, excellent signal for the Slovenian, who can be serious candidate for EL final after this chance by committee, in case of good performance. Also, a very wise appointment because leaves other options for quarterfinals, we guessed Orsato and Marciniak, now they are free and so committee can use them in next CL rounds.
Last remark about Wednesday's referees, after today one would easily say that Taylor will be in Turin, and Kovács for Lille - Chelsea, perfect pairings, but we should not exclude surprises... we will see tomorrow.
Im sorry to say it but im really shocked in a negative way that CdCG gets this game out of all. Even a swap with Gil would have been more appropriate given Cerros current form. I only can hope that he raises up to the occacion and proves me wrong. But given his last international games i fear this game is way too much for Cerro. And it is a choice that shows the imcompetence of Rosetti IMO.

DeleteI wonder, whether it is currently a relatively open race for the Spanish WC spot or whether UEFA/FIFA/RFEF see del Cerro Grande as their clear favourite, which they will push through, if it's somehow possible.
No surprise to see a first leg referee in Manchester (maybe as replacement for Karasev or Cakir), but Marciniak and Orsato were more expected. If there were still some doubts, it is now clear that Vincic is in the "A+" category and therefore a candidate for nearly everything. CL final maybe unlikely, but CL SF, EL final and WC play-off all seem realistic. Again, if he doesn't mess up on Tuesday.
For Lille, the question is, whether Kovacs' difficult game with them in GS is a problem . And if yes, if UEFA would go for a "lower ranked" referee like Soares Dias or play it safe with e.g. Marciniak.
Taylor should be appointed, because there are some chances, that every CL game afterwards involves an English team...
Do you really see him so out of form? I have seen him live in his last international appearence in Athens and overall he made me a very good impression. It was not a difficult match but he handled it easily. Maybe his previous games were not so good?

While I like Vinčič appointment, I think the second one for Ajax - Benfica is extremely risky one. Both teams are problematic, Ajax supporters often put a lot of pressure on referees too (maybe not like Feyenoord's ones but still). Del Cerro in his best form when he was entering the elite group would be a perfect choice but now with his extremely lenient and isolated style... Of course, good luck to both crews!

ReplyDeleteI think we should give Del Cerro credit. He had some difficulties earlier, but still a very good referee. Hope he does well. I now expect Taylor in Turin on Wednesday and Kovacs or Cakir in Lille.
I have a lot of doubts whether del Cerro is suitable for this difficult match. I hope he surprises me positively

I think, if there is a support place for UEFA, it will go to someone younger with more chances for 2026, e.g. Schärer. Or Jovanovic, if he isn't one of the main referees.
In CAF, I think, that Tessema is quite likely to be selected, more than Redouane. Would also give some nice geographic pattern with one referee for North, West, East and South Africa.
For East Asia, I would have seen Sato in front of Ning.
And I believe OFC will get a full spot as usual.
For me, the only question mark, who will be the referee from Spain.

I like most of your choices for WC selections except in CONCACAF. I truly believe Drew Fischer should be in conversation for selection for middle official (not just VAR as he was in successive CWC's). He has definitely jumped up the CONCACAF referee committee rankings within the last two years. Think he edges out Said Martínez. But this is someone who atches alot of CONCACAF football. Good selections nonetheless.
DeleteYou cannot compare Fischer with Martinez - just look at the last Gold Cup: Martinez refereed the final, while Fischer was the only official selected as referee who ended up only with VAR appointments after he disappointed in a qualifying match prior to the Gold Cup. He os not on the pre-selected WC list because, at the top level, he is only considered as VAR.

With all due respect, my personal opinion on Fischer as a referee is pretty negative: we all know that “game managers” are more in style these days than law enforcers, but Fischer takes things to an extreme. The Laws of the Game are merely faint suggestions to him, he writes his own rules when he refs. Being from North America I’ve not just seen him ref, but heard talks he’s given about his refereeing style and philosophy, and I just fundamentally disagree with the way he wants to referee games. For that reason, I’m glad that Concacaf doesn’t see him among the top echelon of their referees (even if their reasons are probably quite different from mine!).

DeleteSomething I've been wondering lately is whether UEFA might send two referees from a single nation to the World Cup (Taylor and Oliver as most likely candidates). I don't think it was possible until now with Karasev and Çakir as strong options from two big nations, but they seem to be out of the running. If UEFA indeed gets 10 spots, this might be an option as well (Oliver and Taylor are both stronger referees compared to who are considered as 10th spot right now as well).

Mostly agree with Quilava's selection, with two comments. At least one of the UEFA referees who attended the Olympic Games prior to the World Cup always went to WC. Taking into account his OG participation and current appointments in UEFA matches seems to indicate that Jovanovic is on his way to Qatar.

DeleteVan der Eijk misjudged the red card situation (which he admitted afterwards), but saying he doesn't deserve a FIFA badge based on that is way too harsh.
I think Kooij made too many mistakes last few matches, but he still is a deserved FIFA referee IMO.
Both of them are only 30 years old, give them some time.
To me it's obvious that Makkelie will be in charge of Ajax - Feyenoord. Nijhuis doesn't deserve that kind of matches anymore, he doesn't seem really motivated since his badge was taken away.
Higler already had Feyenoord - Ajax and lately AZ - Feyenoord. Gözübüyük with AZ - Ajax in KNVB Beker SF two weeks ago, so also not an option. Other referees are not good enough for the top matches at the moment. So Makkelie is an easy prediction.
Difficult decision at FC Porto x CD Tondela. Penalty to Porto. Gustavo Correia (FIFA) didn't give a penalty but Hugo Miguel (FIFA VAR) called for OFR. Penalty then given.

Correct OFR IMO. Attacker play the ball first and defender without any touch on the ball hits attacker leg, even there is not a full contact we have a lot of intensity, so penalty is a correct call for me
DeleteNot a situation for which will find all people in agreement for sure. While the reason for VAR call is clear, attacker plays ball slightly before defender, you can surely say that this was not a linear action because defender was already ready to kick ball, and attacker put his leg there, the contact with ball can be not enough for allowing him to consider it as fair action and so for this reason to get a penalty for the late challenge by defender, that was just an attempt to play ball. For me, since you can whistle a foul for defender having some arguments (attacker impeding the action of opponent by putting his leg), I think VAR shouldn't have intervened, but surely one can understand why VAR decided in a different way. Here the most important opinion will be the one by Portuguese committee :)

I don’t like to see interventions for situations like these. This is just an unfortunate incident which can easily happen in a football match. Both players go for playing the ball, the attacker being just a fraction earlier than defender, who can’t retract his movement anymore. The contact has no impact on play anymore and the contact is too soft to deem it reckless and for those reasons I don’t see the intervention as appropriate.

Extremely difficult situation, it seems there aren't very conclusive replays, according to some cameras, it looks like even a deliberate movement, but there isn't the evidence and the touch could be considered as accidental, in that case one should analyze the position of the arm, looking also at what defender was doing. Surely a call to be supported, because touch by arm existed, but I'm not sure how much this can be VAR stuff in case. I think VAR wouldn't have intervened.

DeleteThe replay from the opposite camera than the goal gives the confirmation that a slight touch happened and then, once checked that, clear penalty. Let's remember there isn't any difference in terms of "intensity" of the touch in case of committed handball, it is useful to mention Barcelona - Napoli again as well, with the OFR in first half.

I strongly disagree with you grumpy-ref! IMO a fully correct decision to not advise an OFR as the Frankfurt attacker, Kostic, moves his right leg in the path of the defender in order to win the penalty. Apart from that Kostic strongly pulled the defender’s shirt for a few seconds during their run towards the penalty area.

1) The ball is played from long distance and then we should assess if the play by defender is a) deflection -> penalty or b) deliberate play -> no penalty. I wouldn't recommend an OFR in either case here.

DeleteMinute 20' in Manchester United - Atlético, very risky challenge in penalty area. The defender played the ball by putting his foot between the legs of opponent, a deep analysis by VAR but no intervention, I agree. Penalty could have been whistled in my opinion, despite of the touch on the ball, one can say that this was at least a careless action.

ReplyDeleteI almost want to say this has been, in some respects, a very Concacaf-like performance from Vincic, mostly in a good way (because that’s what the game has demanded). Pretty high degree of leniency in foul selection, and he is very active in making himself very present when needed (ie sprinting a lot towards most free kicks). This versatility is impressive because some UEFA referees would struggle with implementing this style.

He's just watching the match!' at 89'. The pundits often question the referee but it is rare for the main commentator to do so so strongly in England. You may disagree with David's comment but he is not alone in thinking it

ReplyDeleteThere are points for discussions for possible yellow cards, but this is not rare to happen for other referees as well. The first thing to report is that he had control on the game until the end. I must also add, I remember the "old" Vinčić, when he was still Category 1 and close to Elite promotion, he was a different referee, by far more and more strict than today, he has totally changed in recent seasons to adapt his style to modern refereeing. However, when he has to take certain decisions, he doesn't miss them. We can remember the first leg game for him, in which at the end there were the chance to choose a more severe punishment for some offenses, but he used his skills to manage the situation. Committe can be satisfied, because most important thing is always to end without any controversy, even far better without VAR intervention, then every referee has his style for sure and people are allowed to have different opinions.

DeleteMay I dare to ask in which Laws of the game is written to "use your skill to manage the situation" but not to show absolutely mandatory yellow cards? I am starting to think that some committee members and referees are playing a very dangerous game with the bookmakers.

DeleteDo you remember February 2020: "42:36" - The ball was in play for just 42 minutes & 36 seconds during Getafe - Ajax.
Not a bad performance by Vincic but it was rather an unconvincing one. Not exactly what UEFA want to see. If it is to make a comparison, Hategan was better in the first leg.

ReplyDeleteBoth Del Cerro and Vincic showed lack of time-management this evening. The 20-30 seconds for each goalkick and freekick were not followed up by any cards creating an atmosphere among players who then got carded for pointing out the endless time-wasting. UEFA needs to be sharper on this rather than letting timewasters thrive.
ReplyDeleteVincic seemed so Nervous, rightly so but it allowed him get the better of him at times!!! He allowed the game to Play into the hands of ATM and never stamped his authority on the match and he did really miss a lot of cards. On the other hand for CDC, I caught the last 5 minutes, there was a clearance and the benfica studs caught an Ajax Penalty area , we have seen penalties and even red cards giving for such situations and where do I plant my leg is usually not an excuse!! Although play on was better for me but you guys should check it out about 90 +5 minutes.
ReplyDeleteI was amazed by the change of style of CdCG. Very lenient in the first half and that worked very well. Second half much stricter and that was unnecessary imo. It was frustrating that in the final phase there was more theater than football and CdCG could/should have done definitely much more against that. However in his defence, there are few referees who do this
ReplyDeleteI can imagine that as an Ajax supporter you were frustrated about the Portuguese tactics, but we all know how it works. No referee can change that behavior, no matter how many cards he waves, how many play-on gestures he makes, how furiously he shouts. Ajax got 8 minutes of added time and didn’t manage to create one single chance (apart from an open shot in offside position).

DeleteThis was the best performance I have ever seen by del Cerro Grande (admittedly I do not follow LaLiga so the sample size is not very high). He stayed on top of the situation in a quite challenging second half.
DeleteAlso pleasantly surprised by the 8 minutes additional time given, I think that was one of his main weaknesses backt then at the EURO.
Hans, if you are referring to the two Ajay players subsequently being cautioned in extra time. These YCs were not give for pointing out time wasting.
Directly after the potential penalty situation Chiagozie mentioned above (play-on correct imo) dCG whisled a foul in favor of Benfica in mid-field. Ajax player was mad and dissented by throwing the ball to the ground. While dCG tried to caution him he was aggresively confronted by Blind who then got cautioned as well. IMO excellent managment by the ref.
In general I agree with you that it would be nice to see more or at least earlier YCs for time wasting, but here I think UEFA is to blame. And here at least additional time was appropriate.

I think it was clear foul before Atletico's goal. He missed also too many YCs. He lets Atletico players interrupts the game constantly. And just 4 minutes additional time is more than weird. In the second half Ball was just 23 minutes in game because atletico players faked injuries in every opportunity. If he is not slovenian it could be difficult for hım to get a match at this level again. But you know how it works.

ReplyDeleteSlavko Vinčič greatly influenced the match Manchester United vs Atletico yesterday. Atletico should not have scored the goal. A clear foul on Elanga. But of course the guests had a Slovenian goalkeeper in the team, so they had to win. Vinčič almost showed how not to whistle in the Champions League.

Modern referees do not whistle for every fart. They let the game flow and dare to take risks.

Modern referees do not look at every single contact under a microscope, to disallow a goal.
Modern referees consider the bigger picture and 'What wants football'.
Modern referees have a certain match-feel. They know how to manage the game in a way that the game will be attractive for viewers.
The "foul" you mentioned is rather unlucky. Without this (unlucky) contact, the outcome of the attack would be the exact same: goal. And besides that, it is never VAR-stuff.
Of course, if for instance Soares Dias was a referee, Man Utd would have won because there is a Portugese player in their team.
