    1. Well, the French must have been terribly hungry to have a referee in CL final. :')
You can already fill in the name Turpin for either the WC 2022 final or EURO 2024 final. Politics.

  4. Rosetti knew perfectly what he did when appointing Makkelie to a very tight RMA - PSG 2nd (!) leg.

    - If Real Madrid was out, they would argue that UEFA is punished them for Super League
    - With PSG out, we witness the current situation. Mr. Qatar and Poch very angry at the referee. Referee screwed in media.

The referee in this match will suffers from ' bad' headlines either way. Can't do it right. It seems to be a predetermined plan by UEFA to burn Makkelie's chances.
Rosetti did the same thing with Mateu Lahoz at the EURO.

    1. I agree. If Makkelie was wanted for the final, he really should not have been appointed to a game like this where no matter what happens one side will blame him. Taylor was available and would have made much more sense. Turpin was clearly planned all along imo, as he never got any potentially heated games

  5. Two controversial offside-moment at Eredivisie this weekend.

    Sparta Rotterdam - AZ:
    https://youtu.be/vuB5PpFrHG4?t=321
The goal of AZ could have been offside, but the VAR could not be checked. A player who might have been in an offside position (Pavlidis) was in the blind spot of a 16 meter camera that could draw an offside line, and there was no other good angle footage for VAR. No other camera in the Netherlands can draw an offside line other than two 16 meter cameras.

It was a delicate position whether it was actually offside or not, and it seemed also like it wasn't in the offside position on ESPN's 2D line drawn at a difficult angle. However, so many people had the impression that he was in an offside position, so it was perceived that it was scandalous that VAR could not check.

At first I thought that the 16 meter camera was fixed (like GLT-camera), but in broadcasting, sometimes lines are drawn on the images from different angles of the 16 meter camera. There was another recent match where offside line technology was not used because of the inability to place staff on the 16 meter camera.
    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FRnvTQ3agAA-8Cf?format=jpg
    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FRnvaxiagAAFDVf?format=jpg
    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FRnver8acAAEjhP?format=jpg
Does anyone know how this camera is actually used?

    PSV - Willem II:
    https://youtu.be/1hoay99yG2o?t=60
There was a clear offside of Vinicius before the goal of PSV, but it was missed by the AR, and the Referee (Kamphuis) who saw the video also admitted the goal without punishing it. The question is whether the attacking phase (APP) has changed.

    Kamphuis says after the match:
"The VAR told me immediately after the goal that he had to look a little longer, because there was still an offside moment in it. He also immediately said: "I doubt whether he is in the attacking phase". He took some time for that and after a while came on the line to say that it was indeed offside, but that in his view it was not in the attacking phase. Because it is interpretable, he liked to look at it together.'

“Basically we say that in an attacking phase there should be a forward movement towards the goal. When the ball is played backwards, the center line is a hard criteria. If the ball goes over that, then that is the start of a new attacking phase.'

・ First, I think it's good for the referee to see the footage himself in this case, as the determine of the attacking phase is sometimes very subjective. I get the impression that this case is still in the attacking phase, given a number of international examples in the past, but i can also see that it is controversial.

・Second, and more importantly, I think Kamphuis' explanation that "the center line is a hard criteria" is totally nonsense. What if this player puts the ball only a few meters back behind the center line? He was the only one in the Netherlands to explain this, and I don't know if it's their unified idea.

  7. OT News from serie A. The most shocking VAR mistake has happened in Spezia - Lazio on last Saturday. The 3-4 goal at the end of the game, scored by Lazio and decisive for the score, was in a clear offside position. It was missed by AR, but, most important, VAR couldn't correct it because referee (Pairetto) resumed the game too quickly without waiting for the check. Rocchi is reported as furious, he has suspended all the team-members until 30 May. Referee Pairetto, AR1 Perrotti, AR2 Affatato, FO Gariglio, VAR Nasca (VAR PRO), AVAR Valeriani (experienced NO FIFA AR). It seems as Pairetto, without reasons, resumed game without waiting. Maybe VAR didn't communicate to him in an efficient way, informing that control was still in course. Video: https://streamja.com/7Kgnp The situation was with keeper out from the net and not second-last defender, classic case in which AR can be confused. But the mistake from VAR is because Pairetto didn't give time to them to check. Definitely unacceptable, despite of having been nominated FIFA referee, since this season, I wouldn't exclude his removal from intrenational lists at the end of this year... also, a big chaos in Italian media, with an offside goal assigned with VAR, this is by far more unacceptable than the less controversial case of Torino - Inter, about the penalty assessment. I must say that Rocchi first season as head of serie A referee so far has been quite a nightmare.

And maybe he inspires some youngsters too; refereeing can be fun! Though, cynic might be tempted to say: a self-PR game played on a high level! :)

  10. Well, Dick van Egmond completely disqualified himself today as referee boss, as he didn't do earlier. This Sunday, there are two top matches with AZ-Ajax and Feyenoord-PSV, but Makkelie doesn't get one of them. In stead, Higler gets one and gets the relegation battle match between Sparta and PEC next week. And that's not even the worst: Kamphuis just made his own rules yesterday and gets as reward the crucial matches Twente-Fortuna and Utrecht-AZ. Craziness.

    3. @Luuk: it is pretty normal that Makkelie didn't get a match coming weekend. He has the match on tuesday in CL. It is protocol that after a European match with travelling etc a referee is free of duty the weekend after. Makkelie had in the last two rounds of april matches of Twente and Utrecht. So it's pretty normal that he didn't get a match of those two teams in these rounds.

So no disqualification of van Egmond for upcoming weekend.

    4. It's not weird that Makkelie doesn't have another top match, looking at the other appointments this season:
7-8 Ajax - PSV (JCS): Björn Kuipers
11-9 AZ - PSV: Allard Lindhout
19-9 PSV - Feyenoord: Danny Makkelie
24-10 Ajax - PSV: Serdar Gözübüyük
7-11 Feyenoord - AZ: Allard Lindhout
12-12 Ajax - AZ: Bas Nijhuis
19-12 Feyenoord - Ajax: Dennis Higler
23-1 PSV - Ajax: Danny Makkelie
5-2 PSV - AZ: Allard Lindhout
27-2 AZ - Feyenoord: Dennis Higler
3-3 AZ - Ajax (cup SF): Serdar Gözübüyük
20-3 Ajax - Feyenoord: Danny Makkelie
17-4 Ajax - PSV (Cup final): Danny Makkelie

Don't forget Makkelie also had Cambuur - SC Heerenveen, Vitesse - NEC, PEC Zwolle - Go Ahead Eagles and SC Heerenveen - FC Groningen.
Makkelie almost had every top match this season. With these appoinments Makkelie will absolutely have a match of Ajax or PSV in the last match, which could be an all deciding match.

Absolutely no disqualification for van Egmond.

  15. (1/2) I'm going to play the devil's advocate here but I think Clément Turpin's probable designation in the Champions League final is deserved.

First of all, it is obvious that political considerations are not unrelated to this appointment. They must be taken into account but they do not explain everything, and if Danny Makkelie had clearly deserved the final in the eyes of the committee, the final being already in France, in my opinion they would not have hesitated to give it to him. Besides, it would seem very strange to give the referee supposedly planning for the final the "hottest" game of this knockout phase, Real Madrid-PSG.

But let's look at the last 5 seasons of each of the two referees. The 2017-2018 season is the season of revelation for Turpin, which he starts as "medium-low" Elite and ends as "medium-high" Elite, with in particular a very tense quarter-final return Roma-Barcelona and very well managed, as well as a world-class performance in the Europa League semi-finals. It's quite amusing that Makkelie had the same games that season as Turpin in CL, Seville-Man Utd in the round of 16 (go for Turpin, return for Makkelie) and Barcelona-Roma in the quarters (go for Makkelie, return for Turpin). At the end of this season, given Turpin's superbly managed EL semi-final first leg (Makkelie surprisingly had no EL games that season), Turpin was above Makkelie in terms of consideration by the committee. Turpin also made a very honorable World Cup that year (2 group matches) given his status (Makkelie did not go there since he was blocked by Kuipers).

Turpin's superiority was confirmed by the following season's group stage (18-19), where he obtained better matches than Makkelie (INT-TOT, ROM-RMA, AJA-BAY for Turpin, BRU-DOR, LYO- HOF, CSKA-PLZ for Makkelie), with a remarkable performance by Turpin during AJA-BAY (2 penalties, 2 red cards, all correct). In the knockout phase, Turpin has a low-profile MCI-S04 which was already decided, as well as a beautiful return quarter-final JUV-AJA, very well managed and where he courageously decides not to follow the advice of his VAR, which turned out to be a good decision. Makkelie had one more match: a round of 16 first leg (ROM-POR), a very open eighth return (BOR-TOT) and a fairly low-profile return quarter but very open given the score in the first leg (POR -LIV). At this moment, I would say that the gap between the two has narrowed given the good performance of Makkelie, but that Turpin is still slightly ahead.

After a busy group stage for both (4 games each), the 2019-20 season is Danny Makkelie's season. He went on to perform well, especially during the round of 16 second leg between Liverpool and Atlético, where he delivered a masterclass, all in management and versatility. He is rightly rewarded with an MCI-LYO quarter-final and above all a SEV-INT Europa League final (unfortunately behind closed doors). Meanwhile, Turpin got a very sound CHE-BAY in the eighth leg, with a solid performance, and a quarter-final MU-KOB where he awarded a generous penalty to the English. It had sounded the end of his season, not helped by the fact that France had not resumed their championship after the Covid-related stoppage. After this very special season and to be considered as such, I would say that Makkelie has now passed Turpin very slightly, having been able to impose his style wonderfully.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. (2/2) In 2020-21, Turpin is having a pretty disappointing season domestically. He nevertheless stayed the course in Europe, and obtained good designations in the group stage (RMA-INT, ATM-BAY) but completely missed an important international match, ITA-POL, with several crucial errors. He pays for this match with low profile designations in KO stage, LIV-LEI and CHE-POR. He nevertheless responds present, and would probably have deserved a semi-final that year. He is nevertheless justly rewarded for his good season on the international level by a well-managed Europa League final (VIL-MU). At the same time, Danny Makkelie, after a busy GS (5 matches), obtained good quality 8th finals (SEV-BOR and RMA-ATA). He was rewarded with a very important CL semi-final: RMA-CHE, where he was impeccable. Let's not forget, however, the big controversy linked to the Portugal match. Going into the Euros, I'd say the two men have a very similar background, with Danny Makkelie 'a year ahead', but in terms of committee consideration, I'd say they're on the same level. . Turpin will be ejected from the Euro after the group stage after a generous penalty, and Makkelie achieves a good Euro which takes him to the semi-finals. Unfortunately for him, he will miss his match by sending England to the final on an imaginary penalty. This error was gross for me, and could have destroyed the career of more than one referee. Makkelie now enjoys such a reputation that UEFA decided to ignore it, but getting the CL final less than a year after that match might have been premature. Makkelie nevertheless emerges as the winner of the Euro in his "match" against Turpin.

Finally, this season, the two referees had a busy group stage (4 matches), and were relatively protected from potentially problematic matches, each obtaining only one match worthy of their status: RMA-PSG for Makkelie , CHE-RMA for Turpin. Many people say that Makkelie was protected, but let's not forget that Turpin too.

So I think to conclude that Danny and Clément are today two referees of equal reputation by the committee and for the general public, so the fact that one or the other is chosen for the final is not just a IMO policy matter. Certainly Makkelie's very "smart", all in control and versatile style is very attractive and probably one of the most pleasant to see at the moment, but let's not disrespect Turpin who has been very consistent for many seasons now, perhaps Europe's most consistent referee, and hasn't been at the center of any controversy since he's been at the top level. Of course Danny would also have deserved the final, but Clément deserves it just as much in my opinion. In any case, if this designation is confirmed, good luck to him ;)

      Delete
    2. Finally, I think that Makkelie and Turpin have each missed two matches in recent seasons: ITA-POL (European Qualifiers) and RUS-DEN (Euro GS) for Turpin, SRB-POR (European Qualifiers) and ENG-DEN (Euro semi) for Makkelie. Unfortunately for Makkelie, his errors had far more consequences and were more publicized than those of Turpin, and this is reflected in the choice of the committee today. Just to say that EVERYTHING is not just a matter of politics!

      Delete
    3. Deep analyse. I'm not gonna debate more about who deserve it more but consider this: Makkelie was always "blocked" of getting the biggest games or simply getting more games because of Kuipers while Turpin was clearly Frace Nr. 1 for a long time. So Makkelie getting in this position so quick is something impressive.
But for me at least, one thing is clear. Makkelie was planned for the final this year. Otherwise the appointment in Tiraspol would made no sense. Obviously, something changed after Real-Psg. For some reasons, Rosetti changed his mind. What is unclear is when he did that, before or after Turpin's appointment at Real-Chelsea ? Also I am wondering if Makkelie would have received the final if it would have been in any other city than Paris.

      Delete
    4. Ref, I really like your analysis. I agree with your conclusion that Makkelie and Turpin are basically at the same level. I think a lot of people on this blog don't really like Turpin's style, which is fair; I'm just someone that supports every referee and so I'm happy for Turpin (assuming he gets the final of course), and I'm confident Makkelie will get his chance next season.

    6. @Anonymous: that appointment strategy worries me. On this blog, readers always praise referees when appointed to big tough games. Examples:
      - Hategan with Atletico in R16
      - Siebert with Atletico in QF
      - Makkelie with PSG in R16.
It was always my interpretation that it must be a big honour to be in the middle of that. A signal of big trust. Under Rosetti, it is not really a compliment, is it? The CL final referee is never appointed to risky games.
In my opinion, a very negative development. Referees must be aware of this strategy as well? A referee must be glad to be under the radar ???

    3. Except it's not correct if the foul is also reckless. He has grabbed him by the shirt from behind and dragged him to ground while he also rolls into his leg. That wasn't your standard "SPA" foul. There was a level of physicality and violence to it that made it cautionable all on its own, independent of the promising attack question.

Also, not to get all philosophical, but the lack of the first yellow encourages this sort of behavior.

In the second contact Casemiro clearly touches the ball... if you consider that foul as a reckless in a Champions League semifinal... you have to punish everything with YC

      Delete
    5. Have you ever been dragged back to the ground by your shirt being pulled on your neck while you were running?

There's actually a decent level of violence in the foul. We don't punish it that way in our game, though. But we can't pretend that's a regular hold either. And excusing all of it because he finally "touches the ball" with his "second contact?" No thank you.

  32. German TV concludes that Laporte should have received a straight RC for VC in 9', and I agree to be honest as he clearly hit Modric in the face.

    1. It would be a travesty for Laporte to receive red when Casemiro doesn't even get yellow in that total scene. It would be robotic refereeing.

Yes, Laporte strikes Casemiro's face. The question then becomes "was it non-negligible?" For this match, given how things started, I think you have to say it was. From a big picture perspective, you can't have Casemiro staying on the field when he just tackled De Bruyne directly from behind but then send of Laporte for a strike to the face after HE was confronted. It's rewarding the foul and dirty play from the other team.

Bottom line is you have to see the big picture. Laporte couldn't be sent off there. That said, I think Orsato handled it all quite poorly. And I'd like to know what Modric got booked for, too. Was it just the confrontation or something else? Laporte seemed to indicate that he had his neck grabbed but I didn't see that caught on camera.

      Delete
    2. I fully understand what you said, and I agree that a YC for Casemiro would have been mandatory. But one cannot justify a YC for a player deliberately hitting the opponent in his face. Indeed, Orsato would have been under serious pressure from then on but he is a referee... Now, in case of Madrid losing the match, they will come back to the incident in 9'.

      Delete
    3. I just don't buy that argument. And if City loses they would go back and say Casemiro had no right to stay on the field either and that Orsato ignored a dangerous tackle that could have injured De Bruyne but punished a hands-to-the-face that did nothing to Modric.

The days of every strike to the face being a red card at the international level seem to be over. "Non-negligible" does a lot of work in the text and can be stretched by various referees. In the 9th minute of a UCL semi where Laporte was confronted and falling over as he swung, Orsato deemed this non-negligible and his VAR supported him.

Of ALL the things Orsato did in that situation, it seemed the most sensible. Almost everything else was not.

      Delete
    4. Don't get me wrong, I would not even disagree that it was the most "sensible" decision in the context from a match perspective, considering the foul and that the mass confrontation was initiated by Modric. However, the foul was worth a YC (RC would have been supportable but rather not mandatory) and the slight push by Modric, causing the trouble, was also worth nothing more than a YC. Here, I simply cannot accept to "ignore" a (sorry to say, very clear) violent conduct because there were other incidents that should have been punished with two YCs. Laporte deliberately hit Modric in the face, despite being provoked, "using" that for revenge. It was not a "touch" but a hit and if that is no longer a RC, we can stop playing football. One must be so clear.

    5. I understand what you're saying and maybe even agree with you in principle. But reality is reality. That's not getting a red card anymore at this level of competition. At least not when it's wrapped up in other circumstances.

Also, I do disagree or take issue with this idea--that others have, too--about "we can stop playing football" if that's not a red card. Honestly, to me, the idea that a dangerous tackle from behind that could seriously hurt a world-class start player doesn't get a red card is FAR FAR FAR more hurtful to the sport than the idea that a slap to the face only gets a yellow card. One action could end a player's career. The other action could sting and leave a red mark for 5 minutes. Which is actually worse?

  33. What do you think is it a opportunity to appointing Vincic for final? He is 3 years old than Turpin, good appointments in CL KO stage, no SF, BEL-ITA at Euro2021, he is Slovenian. Everybody is talking about Turpin, but Vincic?

  36. Orsato chose not to caution MCI#9 (reckless challenge ?) and MCI#20 (SPA ?). I must say he has a very lenient line tonight, not an approach I personally like.

    2. It's like how Brych handled Belgium v Portugal.

If the game ends without serious controversy, it's fine for THIS individual match. But it's ugly. And it sets a terrible precedent and example for other matches and other competitions.

It's also very risky and could lead to problems that Orsato can't control.

I would disagree it's "the most important thing," though. To the extent Orsato wants to survive the match, maybe. But to actually officiate a match well.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, but I can't see relevant mistakes so far... not a perfect game, especially due to his physical condition (Just take into account 1 month injured), but a good coherence, great personality and an excellente tactical sense. Maybe something to day about card management, but no big mistakes

    4. Yes, everyone says that, it's Rosetti's fault to appoint Orsato after 1 month of injury.

  59. Awful management of added time, 5-6 minutes should've been added. In general, I like Orsato's performance, but this disappoint me.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Strange to finish the match before the end of the MINIMAL extra time. Over-all, not a bad performance by Orsato, but absolutely not a good one for me. Lack of consistency. Of course, high pressure match, and a lot of referees would not have been able to do it like Orsato did it. But he seemed not on his best today.

  64. And he finished the game 10 seconds before. I think uefa should not appoint referees for real matches who doesn't have nothong in stake. If a referee had all the success in his career, he could be more lenient to teams that have big lobby. Makkeile would be better for this match.

  69. I didn't see all of the match, but the one thing I liked about Orsato was his confidence. Aftert the pk call at the end, a Manchester City player came up to complain to Orsato, and he had a look on his face that said, "Give me a break," which seemed to quell more dissension. Also, the yc on Sterling near the end one could argue wasn't a foul, as he touched the ball first, and certainly it was stopping Man City's momentum at a critical point in the match, but Orsato stuck to his guns and gave the yc because of the flying scissor-like and debatably reckless nature of the tackle.

    ReplyDelete
  70. This was a balanced, decent performance. Not below par, neither a masterclass – too many minor details to call it a masterclass. Man. City have room to complain for not sending off Casemiro, but in the end, they lost the match by their selves.

Regarding the tactical approach and card management: Surviving modus. Not everybody’s cup of tea. If Orsato had a stricter disciplinary line, the match would end with at least 10 YC and maybe 4 sending offs. And you have to be a big authority to officiate a semi-final like this. He is a well-respected authority. UEFA will be happy. Difficult match! I can’t name many other referees that can handle a match like this?

Having said that, IMO the referee in a CL final have been should be ‘tested’ (and deliver) in a very sonorous Champions League return game, comparable to what we witnessed yesterday, or something like RMA-CHE (Marciniak) or RMA-PSG (Makkelie). But preferably a Semi final. That makes Turpin a big “gamble” for me. But all the best to him. Expect a hot one. I wonder who will be the 4th official. Marciniak is a good bet, as Makkelie already attended a CL final as VAR.

Regarding the EL final, mark my words, it will be Vincic. Conference League is a bit more difficult to predict.

And finally, two very sensitive matches in June. A Semi final involving Ukraine and a play-off final between two British or Wales-Ukraine. I think Makkelie is a safe bet for one of these games as he didn’t referee any play-offs so far. The second name is a bit more difficult. Any ideas?

    1. Kovacs or any Spanish referee (probably the one going to the WC) for the other play-off, I think.

    2. Good suggestion, Philipp. If I consider the sensitiveness of that Ukraine-Scotland game, I think committee will choose for a referee with high emotional intelligence. A referee that is a bit closer to players with a human touch. Mateu Lahoz is the best Spanish in this regard. I do think that Carlos DCG will be selected for the World Cup though.
Makkelie is my prediction for the PO-final after his great season.

    3. I agree with Makkelie for the PO-final. I think we will see Vincic in the Scotland-Ukraine game. He didn't get a PO game until now. From the Spanish referees, I still think and hope Mateu Lahoz will go to the World Cup. He is a unique and very talented referee and still the best in Spain imo
