An expected appointment for the Serbian, after the focus by committee on him and the debut in CL KO stage, a semifinal assignment was surely waiting for him. Maybe in the middle not 100% clean performances (the one in front of Rosetti), but still a very good path and big trust by committee. In the other game, another similar choice, with Schaerer having a quite good season, the game he will be about to officiate sounds very challenging (a bit less for the Serbian in Rome, if you ask me).
ReplyDeleteImagine being Collum, and being fourth official, after almost 10 years in the Elite Group, to a referee who's been there for 6 months, after having almost no appointments himself...
DeleteAppointment for Schärer well deserved, IMO. Match will be extremely challenging, both in and around the FoP.

DeleteWhat do you mean by "not 100% clean performance"? I thoughts he was really good in front of Rosetti in Frankfurt.
DeleteWhen you have an OFR for a crucial situation like the penalty, it can't be 100% clean!
DeleteRemember, Scotland does not have VAR (yet), so Collum cannot be appointed as Referee at this stage. Therefore, for UEFA to appoint him as 4th Official, is actually a great compliment to him.
ReplyDeleteHe has refereed in group stage and knockout stages before with VAR though. At least VAR is finally set to arrive after the world cup

ReplyDeleteHmm, yc yes but surely not a red. Mancini's foul (40-41st minute) on the other hand was a clear red.
DeleteWhat an atmosphere in Marseille... Lot's of firework, laserpens, agressive people on the stance. Schärer is not without mistakes, but I must say that I very much respect the way he solved a fight in 68' between two players, especially during some fireworks exploding.

ReplyDeleteI have not watched the whole game, but in the last few minutes, I can't describe his work as a "strict line." There's been a handful of aggressive moments between opposing players and he has opted to just warn the players every time, even after the second or third such instance... it can't be an empty threat every time.
DeleteNo this was based on whistling every (semy) foul. His card management was everyting but strict..

ReplyDeleteI'm sure we don't agree at all, but it was simply embarrasing watching his management of the confrontation scenes, sorry. To see the very worst of CONCACAF refereeing, as directly ordered to the officials, in our UEFA confederation is just astounding. And throughly depressing from my perspective.
DeleteI think Schärer doesn't do such a bad job. Its a very hot match, but in general, he keeps it under control. Disciplinary management is maybe not fully in line with what you'd expect. If you caution Malacia for kicking the ball away, when no one really expects it, you get in trouble if he gets into a fight a minute after. But in all honesty, in a very hard match, I think Schärer is doing pretty well and is in general respect at the pitch.
ReplyDeleteI agree, awful is too strong. I would say Schärer was maybe a bit light for the task in this match. He struggled to manage confrontations, and he whistled almost every touch. Therefore when he didn't whistle for a certain situation, it almost immediately led to annoyed players.
DeleteI would say this was just not very well managed again by committee, assigning a not very experienced referee to this very difficult match. Why not give him a first leg en then appoint a more experienced referee to this second one (maybe he could have been swapped with del Cerro Grande)?
But, in the end, regardless of what a referee does and does not, we should also look at what the actual effect is in the game and while Schärer surely did not do everything right, he kept control of this very tough game until the very end. He should be applauded for that!
Wasn't impressed by Jovanović performance at all, there was a clear penalty (Smalling foul on Fofana) not given and in general he seemingly was influenced by home crowd, literally gave Roma almost everything including some absurd free kicks and throw ins.
ReplyDeleteI think Schaerer did pretty well yesterday. In the tense atmosphere of Marseille yesterday this match easily could have exploded. Players knew from the beginning very clear what was allowed and what not. By his strict line he gave a very clear signal to the players, behave and play football or you're in trouble.
ReplyDeleteI personally don't think he could have avoided the two mass confrontations with these two teams. Marseille being frustrated about missing the chances and the injury of their captain after 30 minutes. Feeling the pressure of the crowd to go through since Feyenoord isn't the greatest team of Europe anymore.
Feyenoord on the other hand defending with all it had and working very hard. Sometimes annoying like it is a southern European or American team. It is a good cocktail for some small irritations.
In one mass confrontation with FEY #3 I saw a Marseille player moving with his head. A unexperienced referee could have easily given a RC for a headbutt. Schaerer stayed calm, and solved the situation with mutual respect. Also the confrontation with FEY #5 just after he received a YC for kicking the ball, was solved on authority and respect. I liked that, where I was expecting a YC for both players who started the confrontation, following his strict line.
I also liked his style on handling clear and obvious protesting. This was a YC for all the players. And afterwards a clear talk that the player should go some where else.
Was it perfect. No absolutely not. It wasn't a 8.6-10. But he did very good in my opinion and was respected all the way during the match. He had all the crucial situations good. AR's where good and supporting with minor fouls in their area (like pushing in the back by FEY #4 in front of AR1). Nobody is talking about him in the media as far as I've read.
When this was a test or exam by committe for him, I think he passed it.

Watched agaiin, may be yc was the right decision in Mancini's "tackle". 4' minute definite penalty, 14' minute agree with commentary, Leicester player went down too easily.
Delete4’ - The ball was not in play, even if it is, it’s not enough, specially because of important of game and referee criterion.
Delete26’ - as I sad for Srdjan level of fouls in this game, just foul and no more. All players accept this decision.
41’ - YC for reckless tackle (not even borderline)
I've always learned that players take advantage of what the referee allows on the FoP.
DeleteIf the referee calls a penalty in 4th min (IMO mandatory penalty) Roma player will not hold the opponent a second time. Rooma player keeps holding after the corner kick start.
