  1. The biggest game of them all to Rebecca Welch - very well!

  2. Congrats to Rebecca! Hope she will do well.

Off-topic: Do we already expect the big hitters for Atletico vs Porto and PSG vs. Juventus next week?

On one hand, I think the committee won’t take a risk. Rosetti is always a bit too careful with Italian teams. And the game in Madrid can be a hot one. Not as challenging as last season (both teams have a good possibility to qualify).
On the other hand, Matchday 1 used to be the opportunity to assign a (promising) younger Elite, whereas big hitters were kept for MD4-MD6. And to add, there is a WC in November. What do you guys think?

    1. I think Orsato would be a sensible choice in Madrid. Unfortunately last season he wasn’t available for this game as AC Milan was in the same group

    2. Lets hope Makkelie gets PSG Juve. Cant wait to see the face of the PSG president in that case

    3. Yeah :D but impossible. Chefren posted the name of the observer below. The Swiss Bianchi is in Paris; he observed Makkelie quite recently (in Bodo and in Scotland).

I’d go with Taylor, Carlos DCG or Kovacs.

  5. Yes, I was just thinking that committee may choose a different strategy than in other years, because of the World Cup. Normally they kept the big names for the last MD’s. Now they can choose the reverse strategy and use the WC refs in big clashes in the first matchday’s, but not to anything sonorous or sensitive in the final matchday’s

    1. They also had big names out on MD1
      Liverpool v AC Milan: Marciniak
      A Madrid v Porto: Hategan
      I Milan v R Madrid: Siebert
      Barcelona v B Munich: Oliver
      Villareal v Atalanta: Turpin
The up and comers were appointed to the lesser games but involving big clubs (so to speak)
      Brugge v PSG: Shrarer
Young Boys v Man United: Letexier
      Chelsea v Zenit: Frankowski
      as examples
as they are done in batches
MD2 big games were refereed by Cakir, Del Grande, Karasev, Orsato & Manzano as examples whilst Meler and Visser received appointments with bigger team involved. Jovanovic & Guida received a bigger appointment in MD2.

    2. Yeah that could a real option. I was thinking how to conclude such European season and if Mateu, Del Cerro and Orsato will leave their FIFA badge on December 2022, we honestly will have only Turpin, Taylor, Oliver, Marciniak, Vincic, Siebert and Makkelie fully reliable for semifinals and finals. It's time to grow up a new generation. Names like as Bastien, Jovanovic, Kovacs, Soares Dias, Zwayer, Gil Manzano should become the new high top level referees

    3. It will be a very different year with a World Cup in November.
Perhaps the UEFA committee tries to protect a prospective / potential WC final referee (if Faghani doesn’t get it for whatever reason), although this is not Collina style. Interesting to monitor the assignments.

  7. My gut feeling says:
-UEFA (and maybe FIFA as well) are pushing Clément Turpin for something “big”. The French have big political influence and are hungry. They haven’t got a referee in a EURO or World Cup final for ages. In season 2021/2022 Turpin has been pushed by UEFA: he officiated at the FIFA Club World Cup and suddenly got the UCL final. He wasn’t faultless in Milan-Porto, Porto-Atletico and Bayern-Salzburg though. The FIFA CWC and UCL final was all planned in advantage imo; Turpin was protected all the way in the knock-out stages, didn’t get any risky games. I predict him as the referee for (at least) the opening game in Qatar and probably something bigger…

-Orsato is a great(!) referee but he was never really loved by Collina, wasn’t he? Always blocked by Rizzoli and Rocchi. In addition, in the WC 2018 finals the great mr. Irrati (ITA) was assigned as head VAR, and in 2014 it was another Italian in the final. I wonder whether this has any impact on Orsato’s chances at the World Cup 2022. Is Collina as political minded as UEFA..?
-Furthermore I love mr. Antonio “lights on” Mateu Lahoz and his style, but I doubt FIFA would trust him with something big. The same applies to Taylor; Collina prefers Oliver. This will be interesting to follow: UEFA has trusted Taylor with quite a lot heated games however Collina loves Oliver. I doubt we can see both British in a KO game.
-Makkelie is a phenomenal referee as well. Especially under high pressure. Often assigned to challenging or sensitive games. Perhaps he could be a dark horse in Qatar.

    1. To be honest, given his reputation, I would call Makkelie a white horse, surely not a dark (in the meaning of unexpected) one!
UEFA referees called for the tournament are more or less all big names, the concept of dark horse could be assigned only in a partial meaning to Kovacs, but he has already shown more than excellent stuff. For sure, among the names, at moment, given also the experience, he is the one about which one can expect less if compared to other referees (but again, that's only on paper of course).

      Delete
    2. Yes, perhaps you are right about that dark horse.
I do think Faghani could be the front runner, if he shows some flashes of his 2018 shape. And Turpin was obviously pushed for a reason :)

What do you think of Orsato’s chances? Is it impossible to see Irrati again as head VAR (or another Italian)? My gut feeling says: the Italian team is not qualified, so Orsato could be used as a “Cakir” (semi-final referee)

      Delete
    3. I think that Orsato can't expect more than a semifinal appointment in case of excellent performances in the previous games. Too many Italian referees and VARS in last WC finals.
In a more general discussion, a referee outside UEFA and/or CONMEBOL would be expected this time, because we had:

      2002 Collna
      2006 Elizondo
      2010 Webb
      2014 Rizzoli
      2018 Pitana

Even more, Argentina and Italy should be without hopes for a quite long time, but we know this is only on paper then in reality due to performances, political choices and so on, all can happen. I think that Italy out from the tournament this time will not help too much Orsato due to the circumstances, he could have had the same chances with his national team at the tournament (just stopping at the quarterfinal in that case, not a big difference).
And about VAR, after Irrati, it will be interesting to see the new names, we will see whether the big appointment (final) will be possible for a main VAR outside Europe. This is very hard to happen on paper, if you ask me... surely for Irrati the similar speech as Orsato, he already made everything.

      Delete
    4. Yes, I see the same things. Faghani (and maybe Elfath) have the political advantage based on the past.
The experienced Orsato [Irrati] do have a good shot for the opener (but rather Turpin with Frappart as 4O).
Turpin seems (on paper) slightly ahead of Makkelie, with his UCL final, however the latter did more challenging/ sensitive games overall.
The Taylor vs. Oliver fight is gonna be interesting.
      Regarding VAR’s, I can see a big
role for the Germans (and perhaps Spanish).

    5. When it comes to "allocation", this should be the time for Asia to place its representatives in the final for the first time. On paper practically only Faghani is "decent" but actually based on Faghani's recent form I think he gets VAR calls quite often, so I'm quite doubtful of his chances. Is it impossible to consider referees like Chris Beath (Tokyo Olympic final) and even the young host representative (we all know how powerful "Qatar money"), 34 y.o., Abdulrahman Al Jassim? For VAR, I think Muh. Taqi Aljafaari bin Jahari (SIN) is the best VAR in Asia right now (VAR on FIFA U20 WC 2017).

    3. @ 23:13 - the WC in your home country was never really a decisive factor was it?
      -2006 Germany Elizondo (ARG)
      -2010 South Africa Webb (ENG)
      -2014 Brasil Rizzoli (ITA)
      -2018 Russia Pitana (ARG)
Rather the teams that play the final are decisive, other politics (whose turn is it). Referees that failed or when their country is in semi-final were sent home

I think Faghani and Elfath will be in focus when the tournament starts. The former has the advantage of being a returnee. If both don’t perform well, focus will move to Turpin first (strong political background). Turpin could be lucky that his country won the WC in 2018 (WC winner “curse”; the reigning champion often fails to survive groupstage). However if Turpin fails to perform well, I think focus will move to either Makkelie, Mateu Lahoz or a British. And all their countries can all play a role as well in a semi.

Opening game = European VAR + either Turpin or Orsato, depending on their UCL group stage form?

  9. Some observers for CL games of MD1 have been appointed, among them Velasco Carballo in Leipzig for Leipzig - Shakhtar.
    Big test for referee here.
PSG - Juventus with Francesco Bianchi should mean a standard big name, without focus by committee, as well as for Atlético - Porto with the less known Pilav from BIH.
The same goes for Napoli - Liverpool with Tritsonis (GRE) and Inter - Bayern with Jareci (ALB). Expected high-ranked Elite officials.
Sevilla - City with Johannesson (SWE) should follow this path as well.
Finally, not a Spanish referee for Benfica at home in their game, but a Spanish observer, Clos Gómez.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Terrible call by Guida, but clearly explained, he assessed a step on foot, and he was afraid of missing a big incident if not inviting referee to OFR. Watching the situation, one could even say that contact is not sure between the players, even less than a very soft touch. He didn't take the responsibility he had to take as VAR, but referee, Aureliano, was excellent.
Another referee, a young one or afraid to stay with the original call after OFR, would have easily followed this invitation... in this way most of the shocking VAR mistakes happen. Good that Aureliano was a man of strong personality there. If you remember, not the first time this season that Guida (injured by a long time in this start of season) calls a very soft OFR, remember CL in Monaco with Massa. Definitely, he is not brave and he thinks that everything must be sent to main referee. Not a good VAR, at least in recent times.

      Delete
    2. If I'm not mistaken, something similar also happened in a Roma-Inter match, when Guida understood that Roma's goal would cause controversy because of a dive by Lautaro and decided to shift all the responsibility to Di Bello by calling him to the OFR.

    1. To add,I think worthy of being mentioned, it seems that as for now committee is working only on MD1, differently from the past in which, you know, officials were appointed together for both MD1 and 2. Now, due to the particular schedule and the very short times between the games, it seems as something has changed. We already saw such trend on recent seasons, differently from years ago. Committee could finally abandon the habit to appoint most of the Elite for 3 CL games, as it was in past. A new management of appointments is possible, by selecting referees based on their form and making selection more frequently than every 2 weeks. We will see when the first names for MD2 will appear.

Handball discussion will never end, always will be a situation where many will disagree with the call. IMO here we have an outstretched arm/hand, clearly away from the body and I will prefer a penalty. Also I think not everyone but most of the football fans are expecting a penalty here. Saying that a play on its not totally wrong because the ball touches a part of the body first (head) then the arm. From all of the many criteria that we use for handball in this clip this is the only one criterion for a no penalty. But also, for this criterion we have seen videos on UEFA Rap and in the last seminar in Frankfurt that UEFA say penalty even the ball touches a part of the body first. About VAR intervention I think is totally wrong. Once again Attwell with this OFR showed us why he is not in Qatar as a VAR. Here we never have a clear an obvious mistake by the Referee. One last thing I noticed is the longtime of checking by the VAR (2’15”) and 4’ in total for an OFR in Premier League as I seen so far is to long.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Simply said, wrong VAR intervention, not enough to say that this was a clear and obvious mistake, same intervention in UEFA games would be a huge mistake for VAR, and I hope that committee is aware of that. When you use VAR in such manner, it is like a random decision, nothing else. Better to leave the referee's original call on the pitch. This is only a second officiating and not correcting a clear and obvious mistake. Moreover, when referees on the pitch receive the invitation to OFR and they show to be so passive, it is even worse.

    2. I actually prefer no handball there as I see it as head to hand and I feel like In that situation the hand is in a natural position for having jumped up I believe the hand being out is a result of the jump

      Delete
    3. West Ham: Clearly unnatural position. Doesn’t matter if it hit his head first. Unnatural position is always, always and always a handball offence, just like scoring with the hand and deliberate handball no matter if it hit the body first or not. It’s literally stated in the laws of the game that these 3 offences are always handball.

He has a game in serie B on Saturday while his assistant referee are in a serie A big match, Fiorentina - Juventus, with Doveri.
Orsato could be in Champions League as well, no appointment in serie A for him, and his assistant referees were with Mariani yesterday in Udinese - Fiorentina. 2. I have watched many Dutch referees this season and I’m convinced that a big part of the “issue” are the Assistents. Dutch FA needs to train AR’s better.

Kuipers, Makkelie performed well in international games, thanks to good AR’s, good teamwork. Gozubuyuk’s AR’s are not at that level, and I think this is one of reasons why he looks hesitating sometimes. Lindhout also needs better trained AR’s. Higler - I doubt he has future - for some reason works with Zeinstra

      Delete
    3. Ok, what do AR’s have to do with this discussion? Did Lindhout’s AR’s blew his performance tonight?
I completely disagree with you by the way. Blaming his AR’s for Gozubuyuk not being up to serious elite tasks is utter nonsense. Kuipers and Makkelie were (and are) TOP level referees because of their skills, and led TOP teams, but in that order.

    4. After failing a LOTG test himself, this is not the right moment to point towards Gözübüyük’s assistants.

    5. Lindhout wasnt that great today, however i have seen worse. And why only blame the ref when the VAR also is sleeping/isnt intervening? And lets be fair the only real big mistake is the fact that the match wasnt abandonded completely after the disgraceful behavior from the fans.

      Delete
    6. Lindhout was rated a 2 by Dutch football magazine VI, so they/general public do not agree with you @Anonymous 23:53.
And why do you criticize VAR while stating at the same time that “there was only one big mistake by not abandoning the game”?

      Delete
    7. 2!? When was the last time a referee was rated so low?

      Delete
    8. Rating 2 is way to harsh. Then every referee that whistles a wrong PK should get this rating, but in reality this is not the case.

My comment about the AR’s was “in general” and not in relation to this game. 50% is AR’s, 50% is skills of the referee. Both Lindhout and Gozubuyuk AR’s didn’t convince me. In general, the level of AR’s ik Eredivisie is pretty weak compared to other countries. Just watch at the early Sparta goal against AZ (after 8 sec) with the sleeping AR1 completely out of position.

A failed LOTG test is a different story and pretty shocking. And Gozubuyuk 100% to blame (is refereeing his nr 1 priority or his own business?)

Perhaps it’s time for a new coordinator after so many years.

      Delete
    9. Another incident that comes to my mind: one assistent literally stepped away from a confrontation between two players in front of him during Vitesse-Heerenveen (recently). AR did nothing, referee had to be the firefighter. I found this pretty awful and in the end, the referee is always blamed. I’m pretty sure that v.Roekel or Steegstra etc would be proactive and interfere in such case.

      Delete
    10. Sorry, I don’t know your agenda but I think your statement is puzzling… There is no issue with AR’s in the Netherlands, they’re not better nor worse than the average level throughout Europe.

And I diasagree on the 50-50 statement as well. Obviously it’s mainly the referee determining the level of refereeing in a match. Of
course good AR’s very much help in showing a good refereeing performance, but in general the image is set by the referee.

About Lindhout’s mark, it might be exaggerated and journalist’s marks usually are not to be taken seriously, but probably there was more to it than just a wrong penalty. Unclear line in foul selection, disciplinary problems, issues with keeping control? I haven’t seen, but it probably is not 1 wrong penalty.

      Delete
    11. To be frank: not really. It was a fair match. No harsh fouls, Lindhout was consistent in his foul selection. Issued three correct YC’s. No confrontations between players or lost control.

The penalty was a mistake. VAR stayed quiet though.

In 2nd halve, one of the Utrecht players was hit by firework during his warming up, by one of the Utrecht(!) supporters. Referee and players left the pitch, to calm things down. Meanwhile there was a warning by the speaker in stadium: they would continue after a few minutes break, but if another incident would happen (no matter by which side) they would stop the match permanently. Things were calm again, but late in the game supporters started throwing beer glasses. And that was the reason for referee team to leave the pitch again, to their dressing room. Fortuna players (including Yilmaz) very angry about this, cause in their eyes, it was nothing. They stayed on the pitch. After consultation with the FA, game was re-started again, for the 2nd time.

After this break, Lindhout whistled a 2nd (correct!) penalty. So, it was mostly a wrong penalty kick (VAR could have helped him) and external circumstances

I don’t know if VAR has cheeked that or they focus was only on collision of attacker with GK.

      CHE - WHU
Clear foul on keeper, but thank only to last replay, closer. At first glance, one can have the opinion that it was keeper going against attacker and not the contrary, I would say absolutely correct intervention with the evidence shown to audience.

      NFO BOU
Meaningless OFR suggested to Oliver who applied the UEFA criteria and a very clear line on this handball incident. In this video you can see the difference between him and all the other PL referees (unless Taylor).

      TOT - FUL
Very lucky for Attwell, indeed he hadn't spotted that!

      NEW - CRY
This OFR can be valid only if we consider every touch by attacker on keeper as foul, always the same speech about overprotection for them. Rather wrong, but in such situations you know a referee can be afraid of confirming as regular a goal after a contact on keeper. I think also the heads of refereeing should instruct more about such incidents, to avoid controversial call. A totally different case from the previous one in CHE - WHU.

      BRE - LEE
Very clear penalty, nothing to add. About the handball before, I think VAR would have supported as well in case of call by referee.

    3. Worth noting that Oliver didn't caution for SPA as he surely would have in a UEFA or FIFA match.

    4. Very refreshing to see this from Oliver. As Chefren mentions this is the difference he has, I can’t imagine another PL ref doing this.

Perhaps (although unlikely) it will be a reminder to EPL VAR’s that they are there to correct CLEAR and OBVIOUS errors, not to examine every single decision

    5. Thanks for the clips Anthony. My opinion is very negative about the interventions in Chelsea vs. West Ham and Newcastle vs. Crystal Palace. Here are two further incidents from the games today, first is reckless vs. SFP scene in the big derby match for Taylor:

      EVERTON - LIVERPOOL Taylor/England (Ref/VAR)

    6. My concern with the Chelsea West Ham OFR (and also other OFRs I've seen) is that both replays are in slow motion. Surely the referee must be also shown a normal speed replay, as I think it's noted in the VAR protocol how slow motion exaggerates things and should only be used for point of contact.

    7. Chelsea - West Ham is a completely wrong intervention. Never a clear foul in real time, simply a collision

  34. Not a great night for Sozza in Lazio-Napoli, with at least one crucial mistake. Foul selection was inconsistent, acceptance good until midway through the second half, then failing. Napoli's first goal was vitiated by a foul. In the second half, a borderline situation was assessed as a non-penalty by Sozza: personally I think it is more penalty than no penalty, but it isn't a clear mistake. All in all, not entirely bad game but certainly insufficient.

    1. "Very weak" is much exaggerated. For sure the Englishwoman has many weaknesses as we saw at EURO, but her performance was basically satisfying tonight. The biggest problem is that she probably missed a penalty to NED at 81', but even if not for the late goal, I doubt most people would have really seen it as a (big) mistake. Walker-Aspinall also with a big call in the 1H, where she rightly assessed that a goal wasn't scored, ball not over the line. Some clips to follow once I have access to an FMR :).
