ReplyDeleteGood work on that YC. Note the stylistic differences from some other referees we've seen, much slower presentation, which diffuses the tension quite nicely here.
ReplyDeleteSeems like there is a special focus on set pieces. Not only in terms of penalty whistled (as already mentioned by other users) but also before the ball is played. The amount of stoppages to talk to players before a corner is quite high so far at this World Cup.

ReplyDelete65' missed yellow card, simply. Gomes didn't see the studs to foot and didn't call it a foul. The first mistake in what has otherwise been an easy and assured performance.

Good performance by Gomes in what has been the easiest of the matches so far, IMO. Perfect style for this match: he chose to stay in the background, letting the game flow as much as possible, but always stepping out when necessary to keep the proceedings under full control. Clear disciplinary line with some good YCs, but unfortunately also a mandatory YC missed for a stamp on foot in 65', which tarnished the performance a bit. I hope he will get a more sonorous match to fully show his quality on next matchdays.

Gomes made a good case for the latter stages (as expected). Excellent fitness, keeping the game always under full control, didn't miss a foul as far as I recall.

DeleteThank you to Zwayerbrazil who highlights the ‘Mr Asubio’ breakdown of mess after the fourth French goal - to be perfectly honest, I don’t realllyyy care that the game went on for eight seconds before correcting this big error. BUT, it does serve as a good microcosm for the performance of a refs team which -- despite the decided easiness of their task -- was quite anxious and not really convincing from my perspective.

Let’s talk thru them:
20’: Heavy tackle judged as fair, and rightly so - the defender gets to the ball cleanly before the attacker before a footballing contact occurs.
21’: Gomes, who was often centrally positioned, gets in the way of Rabiot this time. The ensuing Australia attack comes to nothing.
30’: Errenous onside call by the first linesman, Siwela.
42’: Poor missed foul in the vicinity of Siwela, even Gomes from a way off should have detected the offence. The ensuing France attack comes to nothing.
49’: After holding, a freekick is rightly awarded to France.
51’: Advantage attempt doesn’t materialise, and a freekick is awarded to France. It would have been better to use ‘delayed whistle’ rather than gesture, but not a big problem really. Reckless?
53’: Deliberate foul by the quite rough-playing Irvine - I think a YC would have been possible here, if slightly exaggerated, but a warning was best. That is what Gomes delivered, but could he have pulled the AUS player more aside in order to succeed here? He didn’t really ‘connect’ with Irvine here.
55’: Correct and verrryy mandatory YC for Duke for reckless tackle. In such a fair-spirited game, that three France players immediately tried to ‘take justice into their hands’ and sprint towards him is not the best signal for Gomes. This was such a clear and incontrovertible card that I’m really surprised the South African didn’t really seem completely sure here, only issuing the caution after delay. Also no eye contact, warning about future conduct etc.
57’: Interesting warning before a throw-in.
61’: Quite weird scene leading to advantage played - YC possible here? And then both Gomes and Phatsoane give a goalkick, only for Mbappé to call their bluff, and by his actions the France player ‘wins’ a corner for his side in the most operative sense! Not convincing.
62’: Gomes was VERY anxious not to let the corner be taken without being seen to warn ‘somebody’, and in the end simply delayed the corner’s taking for no reason at all.
65’: Verrryyy clear missed YC/foul for reckless stamp. I’m very surprised that Gomes, with an open line of sight, didn’t perceive this at all.
70’: A further foul is committed by Irvine, no sanction here.
78’: Freekick given against Giroud, Leckie put his body across and ‘won’ the decision.
80’: Good refereeing card to Irvine for sth between SPA/reckless/ persistence.
87’: Needless and poor advantage given to France.
+94’: Correct caution to Mooy for reckless tackle.
+96’: A bit hesistant goalkick given by second linesman Phatsoane.
+97’: Big delay on a freekick decision.

Delete-> Besides 65’, nothing in there was really too egregious for any of the South Africa-Lesotho trio (-> all meet the sufficiency: 7; like the VMO crew at ‘III’), but I wasn’t actually convinced either. Gomes was hesistant and never really took the intiative at any point in the game. It never required it but if we ask: did the South African feel in control of the events on the pitch the answer should be - NO!
I think this trio felt the pressure because —
- sonorous assignment for them, WC champions France’s first game
- (hence), typical AFC/CAF thing I spoke about often before
- Gomes felt the Collina pressure; for sure the Italian’s work at this WC has been EXCELLENT(!!!) and I cannot stress this enough, but for more managerially-orientated refs like Gomes, I have the feeling that this unnerved him as surely he must realise that his strengths don’t really lay in the areas which are stressed by the Italian
— and it showed, at least to me. I was surprised that the AFC/CAF thing happned to a referee who seems as ‘cocksure’ as Gomes, but it seems that it can happen to anyone. A second assignment should be in store for them but I think they missed the chance to really reach sth more at this WC, at least from my perception (-> treatment like Sikazwe in 2018?).
