No call by referee, no VAR intervention.
To be honest, it' very hard to explain. The player suffered also an injury after this incident, he was clearly hit on the head with the arm.
Even if you don't want to assess it as reckless, but I think it was, for sure one must agree about a careless action by defender.
Such situations in Italy are never seen as very clear penalty, differently from UEFA. Here I think the VAR assessed this was not enough for an OFR, but there aren't technical explanations to say that.

One must be indeed speechless.
The onyl reason for confirming YC on the original idea of referee should be that he assessed player wanted to play ball. The ball was close to the leg of opponent, so player was forgiven for that. Bu that's an absolutely wrong assessment!
Very clear excessive force, one can't add more. I think here VAR tried to help but referee showed significant lack of knowledge in application of LotG. This can't be seen at very top level...
For me it's very similar situation (frustration, additional time) to Costa Rica - Uruguay at WC 2014, but in this match red card was shown.

Arm not in natural position and late attempt to remove it.. but in my opinion that's reason why VAR didn't intervene. Very likely he thought that the movement of arm coming back to body was enough to forgive player.
If such an assessment was made by Oliver live, it would be okay for VAR to support, but considering he gave a goal-kick means he missed the handball completely so it has to go in as a serious missed incident, and therefore VAR should've intervened

Overall the German referee handled the Fenerbahce vs. Olympiakos Piraeus tie (very) well, with the difficulty level at quite challenging but not more. His ability to immediately win respect from players is a huge plus, and definitely outweighed the problem of a small handful of missed incidents in this match. I would argue that the Greeks should though have been awarded a penalty right at the very end of the game (+123') even if apparently nobody really clocked what happened, indeed there was a visibly animated conversation between Stieler in the comms kit just after he blew for fulltime (with Dankert?), so surely fortunate that Olympiakos prevailed in the penalty competition. Philipp asked the right question with regards this appmnt and I guess we will know the answer in a few days time :).
But overall: the general impression from this hot-button match was good, without question.

DeleteAbout the last incident, the typical careless action by defender, enough for whistling a foul, but people have always different views on that and it is perceived as too soft for a so important decision. You said it, even players were not so mich complaining, and given the context it's of course strange. It's not clear whether VAR should always intervene in such incidents. The referee can be aware by himself about the nature of the incident. I remember a call made by English VAR in a Taylor game which was very discussed. At the end I would say, better if such situations don't happen. Hard to explain to fans that it was clear foul, in the specific case this could have decided the qualification, indeed.
Then I fully agree it wasn't a second YC to be issued in the other incident, "normal foul" (careless) and I don't see an evident SPA.

DeleteOpinions about Gozubuyuk 2YC decision in the cup final? Strictly by the book ‘supportable’ I guess, but you can argue that both offenses were more clumsy than reckless. I’m not sure if all referees would’ve issued this in the context of a cup final.
ReplyDeleteAs of this season, Gozubuyuk adopted a stricter line. He blows many fouls and in fact is statistically one of the most ‘card happy’ referees in Eredivisie, which is pretty odd for an Elite referee. He’s lacking management skills. My guess is, he to play it very safe, to make it to the EURO.
For me, wrong penalty for Real. But that's normal, isn't it...

Not clear? It is really not a normal "step" from Vazquez to reach a contact, just like it was from Saka vs Neuer... the same stuff... huge mistake in the VAR room.... But actually... if You just watch Soto Grado in the two penalty incidents, in the case of Vazquez, no hesitation, immediately calling the penalty.... On the other side, when Yamal falling, You can see him waiting for the linesman, no intention of calling it... and after waiting, he decide not to call it, but i am sure, he didnt know what actually happened, just like in the first case... But his first reactions are talking about what team does he favor... And I dont think its his fault first of all... but to be a ref in a Madridista (Tebas) liga, its hard to work...

OK for the third situation, I can accept NO VAR intervention, but the first two incidents look to be very clear, especially the handball. Never natural position. To be honest, I really don't understand how to explain Attwell decisions. As top UEFA VAR, he should clearly now that it was a punishable one, and the first incident a clear penalty as well. Only possible contrary argument: it was attacker putting leg here, but he was allowed and clearly hit by defender. Maybe for Premier League it's normal to play on after such incidents, but again it turns to be that they are in a different worlkd than UEFA. In some cases, it is more without explanations, because the same officials who take correct decisions in UEFA, act differently (deliberately?) in England... a mystery for sure.
Then again, David Coote and Stuart Attwell where in the VAR hub for the Grealish handball yesterday. "Brining his arm in" was the reason for no penalty. That makes no sense, considering his hand was firstly in a clear unnatural position miles form his body and still was when the ball hit the arm
DeleteIn this case the action of bringing arm back to body happens definitely after than the touch with ball, and as reaction for that, while the other incident was in my opinion quite different, arm was hit during the movement but it was still open. Or at least that's what I see. Curious to know whether in UEFA Attwell will keep such criteria for assessments...

If we take as a basis those referees who officiated at least ONE match in the Champions League this spring, the following selection would result (although there will probably only be 17 UEFA referees, since one place goes to a CONMEBOL representative, so that most likely one of the three Italians would have to be deleted): Eskås, Gözübüyük, Guida, Jovanović, Kovács, Letexier, Makkelie, Marciniak, Massa, Nyberg, Oliver, Orsato, Peljto, Sánchez Martínez, Taylor, Turpin, Vinčić, Zwayer.

Then you have Meler and Soares Dias, who got an EL QF above some of the names on your list, which might be worth something. Also Schärer with better appointments than e.g. Eskas.

Both borderline situations.
DeleteFirst incident, my opinion, but there can be different views, is that keeper had all the space, the attacker was not close, keeper inside, attacker outside the box and enough space for kicking ball, so I would dare to say one can consider this as regular, but the problem is always about common sense.
If you call it it's better and nobody would discuss.
Handball: despite of the attempt to put both arms close to body, the impact with ball happens in an unlucky position for defender, that makes, in my opinion, whistling a penalty not a 100%and obvious mistake, because the arm stops the path of ball. With the same attitude by defender, it would have been absolutely regular if the shot had been frontal to defender (in that case, arm not increasing body's volume). But again, there can be people with different ideas, especially about handball rule that seems to be a particular case country by country.
As VAR, I wouldn't intervene in the incidents, looking for such reasons to understand the call by field referee.

Oliver has become too laid back, its almost as if he can't be bothered. Taylor has always been up and down as has Attwell as a VAR. David Coote has always been completely useless as a VAR official, right back from the introduction of VAR in 2019 in the Premier League. He isn;t much better in the middle either tbh

The decision about ghost goal should be correct, ball was not entirely in the net, but yes, I must agree with some comments written yesterday, it's not acceptable that in a so important game there wasn't GLT. RFEF should do something in that regard.

DeleteThe returns indicate very experienced names. Orsato and Marciniak; nothing more or less. Rosetti in the first tie won’t be there watching a very experienced name does he. Category Letexier/Oliver makes more sense. And it would be odd to see Vincic again with Dortmund on short term.
I bet, Vincic and Makkelie or selected for the UEL returns with Italian teams. Honestly, the UEL returns will be more challenging than a 1st tie in Champions League that involves a German team.

Rosetti indeed the only committee member in semifinal, this could mean a referee candidate for a final after that game, but also a normal appointment for a very important game with committee member. In recent times in semifinals stages we saw very often this second option... and it's hard to think about a surprise, to be honest.
Kovacs as last test for the EL final would make some sense in Munich.

In general, I wasn't overly impressed by John Brooks in this game. Isolated, not connecting with players, didn't care much about positioning (very central, no adjusting).
Thanks, just watching the management clips I think we can say that we see the typical approach by an English referee, who has to face two clubs from "hot" countries. Maybe a step more was needed, even if we are talking about youth level.
DeleteAbout the crucial incidents, we must praise the decision of no penalty in 11' looking at the behavior by attacker, kicking ball and trying to get the contact, but we know this is seen as clear penalty for most of people and fans, so in a rather important game this would have been hugely discussed, I can add, for sure not accepted (the missed VAR intervention) by Italian fans (but it happened to Olympiacos).
In 47' red card is possible, but you can't be sure about deliberate action, so VAR should have backed both decisions.
Better YC later, than nothing, but still not the best management (incident was missed).
The handball was missed as well live, referee with another player obstructing his view, without trying to watch more. Very evident penalty, correct VAR intervention.
47' is baffling to me. And just endemic about everything wrong with modern refereeing. He's looking right at it. He calls nothing. Play goes on. No one intervenes. Suddenly at the next stoppage for a head injury he's got a yellow card to the offender and is giving the AR a thumbs up? For what?! If the AR had anything, why didn't he tell him immediately like he's supposed to (as there was no advantage?). If an AR did that to me, that late, I'd be livid--not praising him.
ReplyDeleteOf course, ESR is likely correct and it came from the VAR, which is maddening on its own. Because VARs think they are helping here but the arbitrary nature of when they opt to intervene on yellow cards is not really a help and will be catastrophic one day.
Finally, I do think you guys are pushing it when you say red card is an option here. Technically, per the Laws and our instruction, okay. But you want a midfield forearm in a 0-0 cup final that no one notices to be a red card, particularly when the fouled player is ducking do he goes down to the arm height of his opponent? You got to be able to feel the game and read the room, so to speak. This is never a red card. But that's the only part about it that Brooks gets right. Everything else is a disaster from him.
John Brooks started the season really well, but in the last few years since he was VAR on Chelsea vs Burnley, he was fairly poor in Brighton vs Arsenal and even worse in Spurs vs West Ham. Hopefully he can back to his earlier in the season form
