OFR for red card, violent conduct: https://dubz.co/c/3f8a94
Second YC and RC: https://dubz.co/c/6b9b86
Good VAR intervention. I'd err towards that 2nd yc being careless rather than reckless but probably supportable.
DeleteStill think choosing an English referee for a Welsh team at this stage of qualifying was unusual. Particularly given that the Welsh team actually play in England
Colțescu VAR with Hațegan a few years after the PSG incident where both teams abandoned the pitch after misrepresenting Colțescu and Sobre as racists.

Correct VAR intervention in Banjaluka Very poor onside call from AR2
ReplyDeleteHow did Kavanagh do in his Marathon game in Amsterdam? 30 min extension and 34(!) penalty kicks
ReplyDeleteFollowing yesterday (Ajax - Panathinaikos) I have a question. After each team had taken 11 penalties there was still no decision. Therefore the players continued with the penalties.
ReplyDeleteIs there a provision in the rules of the game that the penalties must be taken by the players in the same order?
I watched the interviews after the game. Panathinaikos sticked to the same order; Ajax consulted with the referee team and they decided to change the order after Brobbey missed his 2nd penalty.
DeleteThe referee team told them it’s allowed to change after 11 PK’s were taken.
After 33 penalties, it was Henderson’s turn to take his 2nd according to the “previous order”, however the RB (Gaaei) asked Henderson if he could take it, so they switched.
Exactly, I thougt that you had to take the penalties in the same order again. But because Gaaei took Henderson's place, and the referee approved it, I asked myself what LOTG says about this. I couldn't find it...
DeleteLaw 10.3 explains. Relevant points are the second and fifth.
DeleteSubject to the conditions explained below, both teams take five kicks
- The kicks are taken alternately by the teams
- Each kick is taken by a different player, and all eligible players must take a kick before any player can take a second kick
- If, before both teams have taken five kicks, one has scored more goals than the other could score, even if it were to complete its five kicks, no more kicks are taken
- If, after both teams have taken five kicks, the scores are level, kicks continue until one team has scored a goal more than the other from the same number of kicks
- The above principle continues for any subsequent sequence of kicks but a team may change the order of kickers
- Penalties (penalty shoot-out) must not be delayed for a player who leaves the field of play. The player’s kick will be forfeited (not scored) if the player does not return in time to take a kick
Actually, the rule is interesting, also from a psychological perspective.
DeleteSome people say, the team that starts in the penalty series usually has a psychological advantage. But when a serie is very long, like yesterday, the other team starts to have “some” advantage. In the end, Ajax changed order based on experience, who scored a good first PK, but also anticipates on Panathinaikos scoring or not. The player Gaaie asked the experienced Henderson: if they score, you should go, but if they miss: can I take it? Pretty smart and that is were they used this rule as their advantage.
Massa has replaced another referee in a serie A game on next Monday, so he is not appointed in a CL first leg play off, maybe he will appear in second legs. More generally, it is a strange management with Massa, no games for him so far in all the summer rounds... OK, not all of them were suitable for an Elite referee, but I think he should have appeared at least once, even more after having missed EURO.
ReplyDeleteYou can easily draw conclusion he is not liked by Rosetti like Guida, indeed...
Unless they had to switch something. Massa in the UCL play-off return instead of Guida
DeleteFirst appointment for Anthony Taylor after EURO: Rapid Wien - Braga, second leg of EL play off. Curious fact that the Austrian team had been already officiated by an English Elite this summer, Oliver, who was a replacement in that game a few weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteTaylor in UEL, I can understand, after the negative reports after the Germany vs Spain game.
DeleteZwayer also appointed in the UEL play-off (2nd leg). His EURO also had a turbulent ending.
Kovács has a 1st leg UEL play-off, after his Lille-Fenerbahce game (which was also a 1st leg). How do you explain that?
He’s managed carefully after his wargame at the Euro.
Taylor in UEL is understandable to start the season after the Euro. Kovacs changed both his ARs, it seems definitive. This should matter and personally I don't expect a season nowhere as strong as the last one for him but rather a preparatory one. As for Zwayer, I was expecting him in UCL given his new general profile. Of course, it is not a problem that he was assigned in UEL but why at that game? It is literally the worst possible choice from all the games. Definitely he will not receive a warm welcome in Bucharest after the Netheralands-Romania game at Euro where many Romanian fans were angry with him after the game. There were not huge decisions to make and objectively speaking it was not a bad performance but let's say that he is not a popular figure. Furthermore, there were some critics on Krogh in the latest game.
DeleteCommittee wants to see that Kovács finds full confidence again, the CL game was good, but now I think they just don't want to be hurry, so they appoint him in a rather low profile game (low profile for an Elite referee, of course).
DeleteAnd, let's not forget that there are only 14 play off games (15 including Super Cup with Schaerer appointment) so I think it's normal to make these choices, there isn't room for all Elite referees. There can be other Elite referees without games at all.
Yes, and at the same time: no Manzano and Makkelie in the UEL play-offs, so they could make an appearance straight into the UCL play-offs.
DeleteNot sure why some referees are managed so carefully while others are not.
All appointments Europa and Conference League have been made but again, the only one missing, involving an Italian team, the return leg of Fiorentina in Conference League against Puskás Akadémia.
