  1. Dennis Higler has just had one of the most shocking performances I have recently seen in refereeing in Ajax - AZ. No consistent line at all, missed a clear advantage, missed several YC’s in the first half (one of which lead to a double YC to an assistant coach), missed RC (corrected after OFR), incorrect SYC after which AZ threatened to leave the pitch and finally only added 5 minutes of injury time, despite several VAR checks and the situation after the SYC which lasted multiple minutes. It really gave the image as if he just wanted to leave the pitch. This was BAD. However, if you always struggle in these types of games even after officiating these games for many years, should you still be appointed or should a younger referee be given the chance if Makkelie and/or Gözübüyük are unavailable?

    1. This is the kind of chaos we haven't seen in recent years. It was a very difficult night for Higler.

But I also have some doubts about whether Van Boekel's intervention was correct. It was certainly a tackle with an outstretched leg on the opponent's ankle. However, the strength of the contact depends mainly on the movement of the opponent. However, it is probably 100% RC since it is a judgment by reliable VAR Van Boekel.

Shortly afterwards, a second YC was awarded for a tackle on the ball by Penera, which was a truly unfortunate incident. A bit of a hard collision for a deep tackle with some momentum. I understand Higler's decision to go YC in that moment from his position.

The AZ players were so angry that at one point they even tried to leave the field. Admittedly, Higler's performance was poor, but this is really not normal.

Given the current atmosphere towards Referees, it would be impossible to give a chance to a young Referee. Intense criticism at KKD for Van der Eijk and Bos this weekend.

    2. I don’t understand what you try to point out with the last sentence. As far as I noticed the ‘intense criticism’ on Vd Eijk and Bos just concerns 1 post match interview of a player resp. a coach of the losing teams. Was the criticism justified? What did they do wrong? Please elaborate on that if you’d like to relate to the core of your message.

Moreover, if you talk about giving chances in these kinds of matches to young referees the first ones you should mention are Lindhout, Kooij, Van de Eijk, Nagtegaal. Bos is not even a FIFA-referee yet.
And actually I agree that KNVB should (really!) put more effort in preparing the new generation refs for these kinds of games. At the moment only Makkelie and Gözübüyük (Lindhout maybe) are able to manage these games well enough. Despite many years of experience with top level Eredivisie games Higler faces problems over and over and over again. Nagtegaal though left a good enough impression in the opposite game in Alkmaar before winter break. And Kooij honestly isn’t so much discussed this season either, having matured and refereeing more clever. Prepare these guys I would say!

    3. Higler is never doing well in this so called "Big"matches... always need a lot off cards, can't control the players, and always controversies... he is just not the person for those kind of matches, while there are a lot off names wich can be appointed.....Nijhuis, van Boekel, Manschot, Van de Graaf, van de Kerkhof(examples), Knvb should not only think about Fifa referees, but also they have more than enough experienced non fifa referees, they should think about who performs the best, and this person we apoint to the best matches, not about fifa badges, make a balanced combination, so you always can appoint a referee in good shape!

  2. Letexier's Ligue 1 match between Montpellier and St. Etienne was suspended and later abandoned due to a fire that broke out in the stands after supporters set off numerous flares.

  3. This second goal for Atletico is absolute SCANDAL!!! Blatant, blatant handball from Atletico players result to a counter attack and goal! Where was the ref looking??? For what is VAR there for???

    1. Okay, then also mention minute 30. Two clear strikes in the face and no VAR intervention.

    2. Whole performance from De Burgos was absolute disaster! Lot of blatant mistakes in dete ring fouls, cautions and everything.

    3. Barcelona had possession between the handball and the goal, so it's not the same APP and the VAR can't intervene.

      Delete
    4. Yeah, absolutely not part of the APP. Even if it wasn't for Barca's possesion in between, there was also like half a minute between handball and goal, would be ridiculous to go that far back imo

  4. Pretty unusual to have an Andorran official involved in a UEFA quarter final.

    1. I was rather surprised that she was appointed for the U17 European Women's Championship final with participation of (winner) Spain last year.

    2. For some reason, female referees (apart from maybe Frappart) doesn't seem to have their own team of assistants, at least not in UEFA. Are there really so few trustable ARs in women's football, or is there another reason?

    3. I think there a few trios that work together regularly but clearly way less than the men's game. Usually the swiss referee Grundbacher has two Swiss AR's but she has an austrian assistant this week instead of Susanne Kung who has done men uefa matches this season...

      Delete
    4. I always thought that the reason for this management by UEFA was the fact that there are by far less female referees and assistant referees on FIFA panel, so to give each federation more, always mixed teams.
We'll see whether at EURO the trios will be kept, if I remember correctly, in the last edition, 2022, there were some changes during the tournament as well...

The interpretation of the APP in KNVB still gives me a unique impression.
There was probably an offside foul before the 2-6 goal. The image of the VAR offsiedeline has not been released. The analist has already explained that "the ball has returned once, so it is a new situation," and this interpretation is becoming common in the Netherlands.

A few years ago, a referee said in front of the cameras that "the attacking phase ended when the player returned behind the halfway line."

I think it would be surprising outside of the Netherlands...

    2. @Anass,
No offense, but I noticed that you keep posting KMIs here and always add opinions of people in local media that are parrot-like quoted here. 🦜
These are opinions of a losing team, TV-hosts or analysts (former players). They have no knowledge about the (application of) LOTG. I couldn’t care less about their opinions!

    3. Feyenoord supporters, who won the match, are spreading the explanation that the offside was not punisched because the incident was not included in the app. This is the current situation in the Netherlands.

  8. You can see 2 whistled penalties in home team favour, Peljto was VAR, did not call for OFR for the first one, but did call OFR for the second situation in the 90-th minute

    1. Copying myself from another thread
NED-ESP: Siebert (Dingert) / Kovacs (Popa)
CRO-FRA: Kruzliak (Higler) / Oliver (Gillett)
DEN-POR: Letexier (Brisard) / Marciniak (Kwiatkowski)
ITA-GER: Bastien (Delajod) / Gil Manzano (dCG)

Appointments were made before the last week, so recent problems for Kruzliak and Bastien shouldn't matter.
Due to the competition's status, there should be some room for experiments instead of only using the usual top 10 referees, but I think, it will be restricted to those used in CL KO stage (possibly + Makkelie and Taylor).
So e.g. Schärer, Nyberg, Eskas and Peljto seem also quite possible.

  10. So, the appointments in Nations League and WC qualification will be released with two days before the game, similar with CL, EL, and Conference League. Because last time, we knew the refs with three days before the games, in this competition.

    1. Indeed they changed.
But let's wait for European Qualifiers (games from 21/03) maybe they have been confirmed as three days before, differently from NL.

    2. I think one can agree with this call, even more with the reckless assessment that justifies the call for the intensity of the kick.

      Delete
    3. I wouldn't blame Martinez Munuera much for this intervention but for me it wasn't required. After the pass/shot had been already taken, the challenge has to be at least (borderline to) reckless. In this case, the defending player seems to continue running without any extra movement, also the leg of attacking player was placed immediately in front of the defending player as a part of the kicking motion. I don't think it's a reckless action, therefore I wouldn't recommend an OFR. But, again, I can live with it.
