  2. How is possible that such matches are officiated by elite or trusted 1st category referees ? With all respect for each country, these are matches to test promising 2nd category; otherwise they will never grow up, we will never have a new generation of high level official and we will only deal with the same 10 ones

    1. To me Ebner, Chiffi, Hannessy, D'Hontd, Sclagher and Costa Verissimo would have perfectly fitted the needs of these matches

      Delete
  3. The one for Makkelie surely the most challenging one on paper with teams like Romania and Bosnia.
For Hernandez Hernandez a classic assignment confirming the reputation by committee, a big team, but rather in a medium-low context. Something that explains his status of rather low Elite referee.
A good one for Sidiropoulos in Poland, considering his status, while the rest is definitely not interesting. Sozza in Malta doesn't say us anything more about his current reputation by committee.
Possible that Category 2 will not be appointed at all for these qualifiers, so maybe that's reason why some Category 1 will get very uninteresting assignments for them. We will see with the next games.

    1. Chefren, who awards these matches, UEFA or FIFA?

    2. Appointments made by UEFA and confirmed by FIFA.

    3. Sidiropoulos' match Poland - Lithuania could also be called a "chanterelle derby": Out of season, in my perception, they come 100% from these two countries - at least here in Austria.

      Delete
    4. Maybe even only the referees, who participated in the winter course, will be used.

    5. I was fully convinced that the appointment for FIFA WC qualifiers are done totally by FIFA committee and not by single confederation. FIFA committee seems work only one months every 4 years :-)

    8. Can you explain differences beetween FIFA instructors and FIFA assessors?

      Delete
    9. Instructors' role is to train referees - for example, they visit domestic federations (at least once a year) and give current instructions.
Assessors assess referees' performance in a game (write a report with a final mark and discuss the incidents with the referee immediately after the game).

    10. Thank you! So, if i unterstand well, all instructors can be also assessors/observer but all assessors/observer are not instructors. Do you confirm?

  4. Very insightful comments from Reinold Wiedemeijer and Jack van Hulten, especially regarding the judging problems in the Netherlands in recent months.
    https://www.espn.nl/voetbal/artikel/_/id/14931798/arbiters-onder-vuur-wat-meer-gevoel-en-begrip-kan-geen-kwaad

Fewer opportunities to explain rules, responding to players' emotions, understanding the game and a decline in referees with personalities. The two were divided on whether young referees should be given more time in amateur football or whether they should be given Eredivisie match experience sooner!

Regarding communication issues, I find Wiedemeijer's words particularly good:
"Referees have rules, that's logical. But if you apply them according to the letter of the law, then you're done. I would like to see them whistle more by feeling, rather than with a book in hand. The current generation of referees is not so good at controlling the large, grey area."
"That is different from haggling, because that is not possible, but a little more feeling and understanding can do no harm. Don't forget: we Dutch are not so much into authority. We want to talk, discuss, always give a word back. But that is almost not allowed anymore. Now I see those very tense faces of referees standing in the tunnel. As if they are carrying a leaden burden, not a smile can escape. I even see them shouting at players! I have no idea why that is. I do know: if you have played football yourself, then you know that footballers can sometimes explode after a questionable penalty, yellow or red card or goal. Players do everything they can to win, theatre and emotion are simply part of it. You have to understand that. It seems as if they are less aware of that."

  5. Isn’t it bizarre how the groups are formed for UEFAs World Cup Qualifiers?

Example: the winner of Spain-Netherlands goes into group E, the loser into group G.

This approach is a big mistake by FIFA/UEFA imo. I’ve already found some articles with statements that losing in the QF Nations League would be “beneficial” based on the teams in group.

Curious how serious some NTs will take the Nations League fixtures (which is already deemed a semi-friendly league).

    1. Rojas in ARGBRA is very surprising. I won't claim that I follow thoroughly CONMEBOL international games, however there wasn't any hint to predict him in such a ultra-sonorous clash. Potentially a WC 2026 ticket for the Colombian ? I'm more keen to call this a poisoned gift (remember Cunha a few years ago...)

  14. Definitely not a friendly context for Austrian referee Christian-Petru Ciochirca, appointed to Under 21 game Italy - Netherlands, played today.

    61' Straight RC for SFP

I think it is a brave decision, especially given the context, unfortunately replays are not 100% clear but one can guess it was a very dangerous contact studs - knee.

90'+1 Second YC and second RC to Netherlands

Very clear with a late and reckless one.

The Austrian had a certain approach, I don't know what would have happened with a referee using a classic friendly approach...

  16. If nothing else loved his decisiveness; made his own mind up and went with it - good to see

  17. Horrible decision by Makkelie after OFR. No PK 😳

    ReplyDelete
  18. ROU vs BOS min 53' - Controversial no penalty decision for handball after VAR intervention. Cross coming from more than 40m away without deflection, Bosnia defender stopped the ball with the palm of his hand.

Confusing procedure from Makkelie, he seemed to miss the situation completely, then awarded a direct free kick (player was at least 3 meters inside the penalty area!!), then after VAR intervention he resumed the game with an indirect FK instead of throw in for Romania.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Indeed Very tough decision to take. Even though I like the braveness from Makkelie, IMO this should have been a penalty.

      Delete
  19. Romania - Bosnia and Herzegovina, penalty area incident, handball.
    https://streamable.com/wmroin
I think that the player wanted to go by head but he failed and touched by arm while jumping. Makkelie not in the best position to make an assessment, here exclusive view by AR2. I think that at monitor Makkelie assessed that the arm was in a consistent position because player was jumping, while in the contrary case no doubts about the decision. Still, to me it was never clear whether the argument that a player wanted to go with another part of body could be relevant for the assessment. The arm is rather open, but with player on the ground this would have been clear...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. OFR must surely have been initiated by Makkelie himself then as well, because otherwise VAR would just tell him to change the decision to a penalty with no need to go to the monitor

      Delete
    2. Indeed, about the original free kick, one should think that AR2 reported a different fact to Makkelie, otherwise VAR would have just switched. Possible further explanation as you said, Makkelie directly asked to rewach to see by himself.

      Delete
    3. He wouldn't have changed the free-kick to a drop ball if the free-kick wasn't given for the same incident he reviewed

      Delete
    4. The other possibility is that the VAR had the incident clearly in the penalty area but the VAR believed it was clearly not a foul, so had to recommend the OFR (and Makkelie then agreed). Admittedly, that's far-fetched. But all the scenarios seem far-fetched.

      Delete
    5. @usaref Of course that could've been what happened, I'm not going to pretend otherwise or deny that this was maybe a very very poor piece of VAR usage. However, if all the details given by Chefren are the reason for no penalty, it could be acceptable to overturn if it was indeed Makkelie's own decision to rewatch the incident and not Dieperink's. It's not that hard for me to believe that that could actually have been the case, since there was already a lot of confusion and Makkelie might have wanted to calm down the situation and take control by showing that he had indeed made his own mind up about the situation

      Delete
    6. Both are possible, but having watched the whole sequence I don't see a whole lot of talking from Makkelie at all prior to the initiation of the OFR. He just seems to be waiting and then makes the signal. It's circumstantial evidence, but I think it points in the direction of the OFR initiating the review. If Makkelie wanted to review the decision on his own accord, you would think there'd have to be *some* sort of back and forth after he got the confirmation that it was inside the area. He'd at least ask how clear it was either way for the VAR before he initiated an OFR that might look silly. But it doesn't look like he said anything at all.

I understand why people might think Makkelie had done it himself, but there doesn't seem to be evidence to support that belief.

      Delete
    7. I mean, he did move away a bit from the free kick position and the group of players before he made the signal, but you couldn't really see what he did because the broadcast changed to a camera showing the Romanian manager and his staff before once again changing back when he made the review signal. I guess we still have to assume that this was just a normal OFR though, and if so is the case, unfortunately it has to be season over for both Makkelie and Dieperink

  20. Quick video of straight red card for SFP by Sozza, after OFR, changed decision from an original YC for reckless. I can add referee was close but he missed the detail.
    https://streambug.org/cv/f1a98a

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sozza didn't give advantage at all in that so he missed the whole foul which was very poor. The yellow came from his either assistant or 4th.

      Delete
    2. Indeed you are right. No advantage, totally missed by Sozza.
Here the first part, live sequence:
      https://streambug.org/cv/eea2ff
I think impossible for AR2 to suggest, one should think it was fourth official. Being very far away from incident... otherwise Sozza booked the player only because VAR said that they were starting a check, but this wouldn't be good.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, that is also possible. Also how to continue the game was interesting, they gave a free kick to Finland in that position but when Sozza stopped the game due to an injury and gave a card, would a referee's ball to Malta have been correct?. But maybe the free kick was right due to whole missed foul?

  21. Romania - Bosnia:

Apart from the controversial PAI, quite eventful game for Danny Makkelie. Even though I have seen better performances by the Dutch an OK performance I would say (obviously I don‘t know what FIFA (!) thinks of the Handball). Game was rather challenging and physical with a lot fouls committed.

17 correct yc reckless stamp on foot to BIH#8

  22. As yall have already said here, I am believing too that the old Makkelie is back. And he looks just like Rosetti in a particular game :) .

    ReplyDelete
  23. Regarding penalty situation... Makkelie showed a lot of courage in making a difficult decision, even though it might have been the wrong one. It takes guts to stand firm in the moment, especially when the pressure is high. His willingness to make tough calls, regardless of the outcome, shows a level of bravery that's commendable, even if it wasn't the right call in the end. Has to get the CL final after this brave display.

    1. It would be interesting to know which (UEFA, Elite) referees whom you consider dishonest and whose integrity you would question. In my opinion, your argument that Makkelie should be appointed for a UEFA final this season is not well-timed after the Romania-Bosnia game yesterday. Here is the full sequence of the handball incident for those who haven't seen it: www.streambug.io/cv/6307dd. I would like also to underline that seeing repeated comments of this nature on the blog (such as a total overreaction to the appointment of Kovacs to a 'B-C relegation playoff') are really irritating, and the reason that I don't see much sense in commenting at the moment - we are not a crackpot conspiracy blog, we are a platform where we (should) discuss refereeing incidents and performances. That you wrote such a hagiography underneath a comment that was rather blatantly sarcastic makes this reply the chef-d'oeuvre of this very specific genre, which close readers of the blog are all too familiar with. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to Anass -- 'the Dutch Dale Johnson' on this blog who posts clips of interesting KMIs from Netherlands -- who was senselessly attacked by a user unknown. Anass, please keep commenting, we are grateful for your contributions!

    2. @Mikael: sorry if I’m using too strong words (English is not my native language), but are you really defending UEFA's policy and management of referees now? That surprises me a bit.

You have posted your analyses and observations about UEFA yourselves. You know what they say: the fish stinks from the head down.

You observed that Ceferin interferes inside the RefCom (refer to your comments about Cakir EURO 2021)? You wrote a piece about that yourselves and about Rosetti being Ceferin’s puppet. You’ve stated that Makkelie should’ve had the CL final in 2021. And now you are talking about my comment being a conspiracy? There are enough facts and circumstances that are at least prove otherwise. There are enough indications that some referees are always backed (despite of mistakes), some are not. There have been discussions about referees being out of favor because of a decision against an Italian club, PSG or Slovenia. And rightly so.

Maybe this is not the place to discuss it? Maybe it is, because we also discuss referee appointment. I think the way some referees are managed (or favored) is not fair and we should not close our eyes for that.

      Delete
    3. Btw, I have stated on the blog that Letexier should get the Champions League final this season (if no PSG in there), because he is the best referee atm.

I never posted arguments that Makkelie should get it this season, that wouldn’t be justified. I just said he deserved the final in 2021. You clearly don’t like Makkelie do you? I do not recall a single positive comment from you about Makkelie.

  24. Danny Makkelie - in one word - disaster.

1 st - AR 2 signals for a foul for an incident that is close to the line and he is not sure where. He has radio for god sake.....
2nd - Danny Makkelie gives the foul outside.
3rd - VAR intervene with OFR when this is only factual - they gave a foul after all.
4th - VAR - the most stupid camera choson and the true reason why Danny Makkelie changed the decision.

    I am really speachless here.
