  1. The symbolic appointment! ;)
    A Slovenian. Classic.

  2. I never saw a first class referee in the R16 CL; it's probably a replacement after the 1st leg result; I guess it wasn't the 1st appointment done

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think it's happened more often, because in R16 first category refs are still allowed, but usually they do 1st legs, not 2nd legs
from quarter finals on they should be all elite
      I guess his nationality helps....

  3. Hahahahahahaha, Obrenovic, Ceferin, Rosetti and Sajn UEFA circus

    1. His performance in AZ-Tottenham wasn’t exceptional either. It says something about the power of a passport. ;)

They had to find a replacement after the 1-7 in 1st leg - Elite is a waste - and I assume Peljto became a victim of that.

      Delete
  4. Couple of comments:
    1. Scharer-expected, as someone of you predicted earlier
    2. Obrenovic with regular observer, and I think first in history from 1st category that officiate round of 16. Expected promotion to elite at next update
    3. Siebert- back in the game!
    4. Marciniak- excellent appoitment for him.
So we can conclude that names like Peljto,Nyberg,Makkelie,Taylor are kept for quarterfinals.

    1. about Obrenovic, I think it's happened more often that a category 1 ref got a round of 16 match, because in the the round of 16 the refs are allowed from 1st category, howerer from the quarter finals on they should be all elite referees, at least in champions league.

      Delete
    2. But I agree he's a good referee and expected to promote this summer to elite

      Delete
    3. I also can't remember a non-elite referee ever having handled a Champions League match in the knockout phase. Could it be possible for UEFA to appoint a referee originally planned for this game at short notice for a Europa League match and to appoint Rade Obrenovic for this game, which is most likely rather meaningless in view of the first-leg result?

      Delete
    4. As I can remember Pavel Kralovec and Milorad Mazic as Elite Development group referees had KO match in CL long time ago

      Delete
    5. Did siebert get a knock out games as a 1st?

      Delete
  5. Was already hoping Marciniak would be refereeing in the Madrid derby, gonna be a wild match, great appointment
bit suprised not to see Danny Makkelie or Anthony Taylor on this appointments, but maybe they will have a match in the Europa League or in the Champions League semi-finals

    1. Yes, Makkelie and Taylor missing in both CL rounds is quite remarkable.
I think, there must be more behind that than just "they are protected for the final".
I would even argue, it would be hard to justify to use them in the following CL stages. Would be unfair against others, who had to "survive" one or two KO games already.

      Delete
    2. Can be justified by experience imo:
      - Makkelie: 52 UCL games, 4x QF, 2x SF. UEL final 2020.
      - Taylor: 38 UCL games, 3x QF, 1x SF. UEL final 2023, Nations League final etc.

      Delete
  6. I don’t understand how Obrenovic, only a few months after a disastrous performance under the eyes of Rosetti, can be appointed to a CL R16, and be considered for a promotion to Elite category.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Rather unusual, that officials (Borosak and Dingert) work as main VAR on Tuesday and Wednesday. Normally, it is a combination of VAR and AVAR, if they work both days.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. VAR in Inter-Feyenoord is Fedayi San now. They removed Dingert

  8. I think that a Category 1 officiated a Round of 16 in CL KO stage many years ago, it was either Karasev or Mazic, I don't remember exactly, but surely one of the two. Maybe both... it's extra ordinary, but already happened, while surely Category 1 can't appear from Quarterfinals onwards.
So they use the game in London for Obrenovic. The observer, Layec, didn't change. I think it's possible they changed only the referee in this case, because it's hard to think he was already appointed for that, even before his previous game.
Basically it's good thing that we don't see Elite in London, would be a full waste after first leg score, but we can observe that the Slovenian MUST have a career, despite of some controversial performances. I didn't have the occasion to watch more from his last match in Netherlands, maybe he was good.
The rest, all expected, with Schaerer together with Kruzliak with a delayed assignment waiting for their EL games before.
Hard to find different names for Madrid's derby, while Siebert keeps a certain trust by committee, but let's say, if I get his management right, if there is a room, they assign him (clearly Zwayer is ahead as German nr.1, based also on this choice). Always hard to understand about Stieler...

    1. After accurate search:
Milorad Mazic was promoted as Elite on June 2013.
He had already got a CL KO game as Category 1, PSG - Valencia, Round of 16, 6 March 2013.

      Delete
    2. You right, but he was not first category ref, he was Elite Development! :)

      Delete
    3. Aydinus and Karasev had a R16 in the same season as Cat1 iirc.

      Delete
    4. But this can suggest us also that Obrenovic promotion is close, otherwise no hurry to put him in CL KO stage.
      Elite on June? Well' see...

      Delete
    5. About Aydinus and Karasev, also Elite Developement :)

      Delete
    6. And also, Karasev was part of knock out stage at 13/14 Real Schalke, Aydinus at 12/13 he officiate Juventus home game at round of 16.

      Delete
    7. If I remember correctly, I think Cüneyt Çakır set a certain record in 2010 when he officiated the match Fulham FC - Hamburger SV in the semi-finals of the Europa League. It wasn't the Champions League, but as far as I know, the Turk wasn't an elite referee at that time (but replaced another colleague at short notice).

      Delete
    8. Addendum: And without ever having refereed a single Champions League match before, as I just realized ...

      Delete
  9. It is worth mentioning that two matches were delayed in the Champions League, but also three in the Europa League:

    Athletic-Roma
    Olympiacos-Bodø
    Rangers-Fenerbahce

Could be the same approach with Kruzliak/Schärer, thus we can expect some 1st leg referees again. Except for one name, because one of the referees was initially appointed to Arsenal-PSV and moved to one of the open games. Probably Peljto or Nyberg?

    ReplyDelete
  10. OT: Anyone know (maybe ESF) what happened on the first goal for Legia Warsaw at Ekstraklasa Motor Lublin-Legia Warsaw? I'm confused with the referee gesture. The referee was Jarosław Przybył (48 y.o). Thanks in advance.

  12. OT: this review for a red card was given as a second yellow in AFC Champions League Al Nassr vs Esteghlal, 4:27 in this video: https://youtu.be/2HiORDB9rEU?si=rwsD3N4oW_bGYxvV&t=4m27s

    Referee: Ilgiz Tantashev (UZB),
Don’t know where to find the VAR

Crazy that something like this gets sent down as a red card review. It’s barely a yellow card, let alone a clear and obvious red. I guess the VAR decided that second yellows are reviewable now? If this is the standard of VAR in AFC, then the 2026 World Cup will surely not go better for them than 2022.

Here the full game on AFC official channel:

VAR were from Uzbekistan as well, Norsafarov and Riskullaev.
Fully unknown names for me but I don't follow AFC recently.
Incident in 45'+2 of first half.
In my opinion VAR assessed it was a deliberate action by player (without looking at all at the intensity), but indeed in the scenario where the player was already booked and after the OFR the referee goes for a second YC, you have feeling that VAR has been rather used against the protocol... would have been definitely better to show a direct red card, once rewatched.

You can see how around the world, there are the most different uses of VAR, and I want to say again that's absolutely not good thing...

      Delete
    2. If I'm not mistaken about Uzbek referees, after Asian Cup 2023 (he's not involved), Firdavs Norsafarov (31 y.o) rise as trusted VAR from the region and he is now VAR candidate for FWC 2026 (maybe it's also for CWC 2025), with Irmatov influence IMO Uzbekistan full squad (Tantashev-Norsafarov) we like it or not, it will going far. Uzbekistan right now have 2 young rising referees, beside Norsafarov, they have Asker Nadjafaliev (30 y.o), already have KO game in AFC CL 2 (Jeonbuk-Sydney/big match). They move on from Irmatov-Kovalenko era and now starting with Norsafarov-Nadjafaliev. For me it's very good thing because at the moment the situation in AFC to Arab-centrism, almost all match the VAR is from that region, and at the same time the situation for East Asia referee (China, Korea, and Japan) not good. Beside Uzbekistan, they have rising star from Tajikistan (but I don't think he had enough support), Sadullo Gulmurodi (34 y.o).

      Delete
    3. Thanks for the detailed information Andrei, always nice to hera updates from lesser-known parts of the world. I watched Gulmurodi (TJK) during his Asian Cup game last year and thought he did a very good job.

  14. Foul detection from Schärer is very inconsistent, 19th minute clear strong push with both hands by Dortmund player it was a typical wrestling action not football action but no whistle and it resulted in a very dangerous Dortmund attack. I am all for letting the game flow but such fouls should be whistled.

    ReplyDelete
  15. IMO very soft but not incorrect penalty for Dortmund from Scharer for Dortumund. VAR correct to not intervene

    ReplyDelete
  16. At least supportable PK for Dortmund. Never VAR stuff

    ReplyDelete
  17. Schärer: Never a penalty IMO from what I have seen on the first replay, I would even have expected a VAR intervention. Does anyone have a better replay?

    2. Thanks, looks like the foul was outside, if anything.

      Delete
  18. And now very soft penalty for Dortmund, the French will feel very aggrieved. In my view it was a dive by Guirassy

    ReplyDelete
  19. Maybe not the push but the contact between legs... but it looks like a very soft call at first glance.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The VAR must have seen some contact to the legs, this can be the only explanation, because otherwise the call makes no sense. The upper body contact, if it’s even a foul, is clearly outside of the penalty area. I’m very interested to see if there exists any camera angle showing a lower body foul…

    2. It's football, not Basketball!

      Delete
    3. I think the last little push happens inside the penalty area so should still be correct based on position. However that push is very very light...

      Delete
    4. And in that case, Elliot, if we are using the word “push,” surely it should be a red card!

      Delete
    5. Good point actually, I can agree with you on that point

      Delete
    6. Guys, when players are running even a soft contact will cause a fall. VAR can never intervene, there are contacts with the legs and slight pushes

      Delete
  20. Thats a dive. Last 2 days we have seen very soft penalties given that should be corrected by VAR. I sense now the threshold for intervention is becoming too high that VAR is looking for any little contact not to intervene.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Very soft PK from Schärer.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Here in France, commentators struggle to understand how Guirassy/Meunier is a foul, but not Barcola/Konaté…

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well, full of respect for Sandro Scahrer, but we saw average performance from him. Lack of consistency in foul judgment, and unfortunately very soft, soft penalty call from him. In my view, evetually we can see him at one UECL game. If not, European season for him is, in my view, over.

    ReplyDelete
  24. not scharers best performance.inconsistent foul detection throughout and an extremely soft penalty for dortmund

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Clear no penalty for Scharer. I dont understand how this is not invervention. If we ask 100 referees - 100 would not agree with this decision. So this is not acceptable to leave it with no invervention.

      Delete
  25. That is a pathetic, game changer. Ok for Dortmund....I would prefer var to call over referee to have a look, let him then further decide...yes or no....angles would show the bump is nearly shoulder to shoulder. Def. No foul

    ReplyDelete
  26. OT: Guys, maybe the stupid question from my side, but, I would like to ask about Marciniak decision for offside in Madrid last year. We know that mistake was evident in way of protocol beocuse of VAR, but does Uefa acknowledges was there offside or not?

    ReplyDelete

    1. If I'm not mistaken, it didn't even make it to the RAP. Maybe it's in the 2024-2 one, but I doubt it. Btw, any idea if/when we will get the link for that, @Chefren ,?

  27. I am completely lost with these handball decisions? Can someone explain me, why it is not a penalty on 20 min at ATM-RMA game?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I would say hand is very close to the body, moving away from the ball, at most a very slight touch. Also from short distance. Thus never a penalty IMO.

      Delete
    2. Small distance, arm down by side, natural position, accidental. I'm struggling to find any reason why it would be handball

      Delete
  28. I very much like the hand gestures by referees to clearly indicate that a VAR check is over. Seen a lot of refs do it lately, now the camera in the broadcast focused on Marciniak when he did it. It maked the VAR room decision very clear for everybody.

  29. Dogso Rc in Aston Villa vs Bruge (17.) for a touch just outside the box. Communication between Siebert and his Ar seemed to be a bit confusing considering Sieberts mimics and gesture.

    ReplyDelete
  30. DOGSO RC correct by Siebert at Aston Villa. Not great management however IMO. Too hesitant, continually searching for confirmation from AR2. Appeared indecisive.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Compare Marciniak to most Uefa officials, including Kovacs last night. He is very happy to completely ignore Uefa's captains protocol and chat to players who are asking a question about his decisions. He won't accept dissent but uses his personality to difuse situations, and gains much more acceptance and respect from all because of this. Very enjoyable to see

    1. Where does it say players can’t respectfully talk with the referee?

    2. Marciniak being Marciniak, demonstrating imposition and mastery so far.
As for Scharer, I see that he will not receive any assignment in the UCL (at least the trend is that way). I do not see any clear and evident element to award the penalty to BVB.

Here the handball, in my opinion grey area.
Must be whistled by referee, rather no VAR stuff, but it can appear controversial in countries like Italy and Spain (indeed I'm also reading some opinions from Spanish "experts", just as curiosity).
Absolutely natural position of the arm, consistent to body when ball is kicked, but then a movement opening arm and touching it while ball was passing.
A penalty call wouldn't have been questioned by VAR, about some incidents it's impossible to have balck or white, as the opionins above also demonstrated.

    1. From the replay, it's not clear if the trajectory of the ball changed at all.

    2. Easy call for play on. Fully natural position of hand.

It seems as he definitely wanted a big help by AR... not good to watch.
A too much "shown" need of cooperation, could have worked more discreetly.

    1. The AR2 Koslowski normally is not in Siebert's team, replacing Seidel tonight. Maybe that played a role here.

    2. Yeah, Since Jan Seidel (usually Sieberts AR1) is currently unavailable, Rafael Foltyn (usually AR2) was moved on the AR1 position. Therefore, Siebert now works with a different AR2 in nearly every match at the moment.

Actually Sieberts last game together with Lasse Koslowski was more than one year ago.

You can maybe find as argument that the oter defender could have reached the ball before attacker?
Otherwise, classic wrong "genuine" assessment, when the foul is not genuine. This is the trend now...

      Delete
    2. Also due to the fact that Mbappé wasn't running straight towards goal and therefore have to turn before shooting. I think okay by VAR to stay silent, but technically you can defenitely see arguments for DOGSO here (maybe even preferable decision for me)

      Delete
  37. Obviously he is a world class referee, but I must say that I'm not been as impressed by Marciniak tonight as I usually am. He got both penalty area incidents correct (even if you could debate potential DOGSO for the latter), and in full control as always, but foul detection have seemed a bit off at times and probably 1 or 2 missed YCs as well

  40. Im sorry but how is that a double touch. There is no conclusive angle.

    1. For Alvarez's penalty to be disallowed, Kwiatkowski would have needed to be very honest in seeing the angle of the two torques. If there really was one, a 10 for the Polish VAR.

    2. There is sensor in the ball that confirms a touch of it. Pure technology.

      Delete
    3. Actually no, there is no such sensor in the ball in Champion's League.

  42. I don’t see a double touch? So far no clear evidence shown.. this could be catastrophic. Hopefully UEFA can clarify fast.

    4. As discussed before: IMO, no game in the play-offs or R16 should mean, that you are out for the rest of the season.
      a) There must be a reason, why UEFA hasn't appointed them. Whether that's lack of trust, punishment, fitness problems or something else is unknown.
      b) The referees, who successfully did 1 or 2 KO matches deserve it more - and have somehow qualified for further appointments.

Also, Taylor doesn't really have a match as he apparently doesn't do German teams since the EURO.

    5. Strange reasoning which rather seems personal preference (which is Ok). But completely disagree, some of the Europa league games are far more challenging than some Champions league games so too superficial reasoning for me. And actually I think you’ll be proven wrong quickly as well.

  46. I don’t see a clear double touch. Recall that, per Law 13, a Free Kick (or a penalty in this case) can be taken by both feet simultaneously. I don’t see clear evidence that the touches were not simultaneous.

    1. It's clearly not simultaneously. That' impossible there. Right foot on the ball and then hits the left foot.

    2. In the first place there’s nothing clear in this situation. From the 3 replays shown on tv there is no evidence, hence for Var there must be clearer images of the second touch. And Uefa better publish those really quickly otherwise this could turn very nasty…..

    3. What’s clear is that it wasn’t two feet at the same time. It was a very light touch on the left foot after the shot. Had they zoomed in with more slow motion it would be visible.

    4. On the topic of simultaneous touch, if we are discussing it, I think it’s worth acknowledging that the term is not very precisely defined by the Laws of the Game.

Specifically, it is possible that the ball touched one foot first and then touched the other foot while it was still in contact with the first foot. This begs the question of is that a legal kick? As I read Law 13, I would argue that this counts as a simultaneous kick. But the Laws of the Game don’t provide a clear answer to this question, which should probably be fixed before the next competition where we have motion sensors in the ball.

This is the sort of edge case that no one considered when they wrote the Law because we didn’t have such technology back then.

  47. Am I the only person who sees a clear double touch? I needed to watch it a few times to be sure but every angle I’ve seen (including live) I thought 2 touches

    1. No, he kicks his own foot, not the ball. On Twitter there is a clear image of this.

    2. For me also it looked like a double touch but it's extremely difficult to assess ... I don't know what the committee will think about it

    Maybe Arsenal-Real Madrid? ;)

  50. I don’t see double touch either. Just look the trajectory of the ball - there is no rotation whatsoever. If you have double touch, there would be some rotation. Only if there was slightest touch that human eye is hardly enable to see. But is it worth to loše the place in 1/4 final in CL??? So many mistakes could be done and ignored, and then you punish something like this.

  51. GRef: can you provide me a source that in this game the ball chip technology was used? This was introduced by UEFA for EURO, but then I couldn't find any link reporting that it had been confirmed at least for Champions League games, and which stages of the competition.
We can't know. About yesterday, we must trust VAR about the detection, impossible to think to intervene at this level for such a decision, without having the evidence, but it would be important to make things clear for all fans.
In all cases, this was impossible for pitch officials because you can't be sure with human eye about the first touch.

  52. The reported foul in Obrenovic game.
    https://streambug.org/cv/367854
RC was possible due to the two-footed tackle and a certain intensity, however, the low point of impact and not a srong contact with opponent saved the player from a RC. I think it was OK by VAR to assess this as borderline and not a clear RC but I think RC would have been better decision.
Once again, Obrenovic not convincing before whistling the foul, it looked like he wanted to play on and maybe helped by fourth official? You rarely see very firm decisions and management in his game, at least so far. It seems like he is always afraid to miss / make wrong something...

    1. I'm sorry but I don't understand how you can look at a VERY risky possible leg breaker tackle, studs up without control, and say "well it's okay to get away with it, maybe minor mistake". This is a tackle we never want to see, and I hate that seemingly the only way Obrenovic would call RC here (or even instant foul call - what on earth was he thinking?!) is if the players leg actually breaks. Baffling.

      Delete
    2. Agree with MQ. For me is this a rc and a mistake from referee and VAR.

      Delete
    3. Wild tackle which should clearly have resulted in a red card; look at the position of the ball relative to where Sterling actually makes the tackle. Obrenovic's mark should not exceed 7,9. We will see what happens next...

  53. Strong performance by Marciniak last night, excellent personality, top game managment, good disciplinary control, penalty call was excellent decision. About penalty series situations, I stay behind Kwiatkowski decision, and it was good decision in my view, of course impossible to see on field. Path for Marciniak quarter finals and semifinal either in my view.

The videos on social media are now clarifying but I thought immediately that it was a fairly obvious irregular execution, due to the spin on the flight which it is impossible to get from kicking a dead ball (and Alvarez had slipped). Here, I think we can all agree that the stadium voice annoucement would have worked well(/better). In my opinion Marciniak did a very good job in the match overall, using his big name/experience together with great understanding of the game from a players' perspective (recognising which fouls were most likely to cause retaliation and preventing it from happening). As a very small area of advice, perhaps some of his 'angry' reactions in the first half were slightly too angry; as a random example I can remember one episode where he warned an Atletico player and Bellingham gently patted him (Marciniak) on the back afterwards as if to say 'calm down a little'. Finally, while we can (and should!) praise Letexier, it also should be underlined in my view that the match would have looked quite different had the Frenchman, or indeed probably any other UEFA referee for that matter, been in charge.

    1. It's interesting about the angry reactions, looks like something Marciniak is performing only in recent times and he never did that before, or at least I don't remember it in past times.
Sometimes I think there is no need to do that, but he uses it to calm down players, UEFA, as we know also thank to RAP editions, wants always to see "calm and composed" referees while approaching players, so they would definitely prefer Letexier (and others) style, but I think at this point Marciniak can't officiate a big game without doing that...

  55. Despite the incident in the penalties, great performance by Marciniak.
I think this matchweek in UCL showed that we have some referees ( Turpin, Marciniak, Letexier, Kovacs ) that continue to convince and have the trust of the committee. Curious to know what Siebert has done in his game.

I can't comment on the whole performance but after having scrutinised the episode, as a refereeing person I can finally make sense of Siebert's gestures in the red card scene. Chronologically: *goes to whistle a foul (for holding)*, makes a small play on gesture, *blows up for a foul*, makes a 'Codesal-like' gesture to signify contact at the feet; and then due to this confusion, after having explained to the linesman that he doesn't think it is a foul for holding, but instead tripping, and presumably asking if the attacker still in requisite control of the ball to constitute DOGSO... red card is shown.

In my opinion, everything is not much problem besides that he reaches quite visibly to show a yellow card at one stage, which should obviously be avoided (when the final decision is red). The probable play on gesture before is luckily rather discrete.

      Delete
    2. Yeah you are definitely right, his gestures were a bit not comprehensible if you focus on what he's doing. He seems to first signal to play on, before going to reach for a yellow, and then ends up going for a red card.

    PSG - Aston Villa

    Bayern - Inter

    1. My idea is that UEFA could avoid the Champions League being overMASSAcred, overOLIVERized and/or overVINCICed by saving at least some of these three referees with eight appearances so far directly for a semi-final. Massa would be available for SF 1 (PSG/Villa - Arsenal/Real), Oliver for SF 2 (Barcelona/Dortmund - Bayern/Milan) and Vincic for both.

      Delete
    2. IMO impossible for Massa to repeat PSG after PSGLIV controversy.

      Delete
    3. Massa could still referee a semi-final if PSG are eliminated. Even the other game would come into consideration if Inter lose to Bayern and it comes to the encounter Barcelona/Dortmund - Bayern. I therefore see no need to use referees in the quarter-finals for the 9th time in the current season.

  59. UEFA released the following statement with an additional camera angle showing that the ball was touched by Alvarez’s plant foot before contact was made with his right foot: https://www.uefa.com/news-media/news/0297-1d449595df1f-e4e8a42fabeb-1000--uefa-statement-on-var-decision-at-atletico-de-madrid-vs-re/

However, this does nothing to assuage my concerns that nothing in Law 13, 14, or otherwise is defined strictly enough to say that this action constitutes a clear offense.

Law 13.2: “A free kick can be taken by lifting the ball with a foot or both feet simultaneously.”

Law 13.3: “If, after the ball is in play, the kicker touches the ball again before it has touched another player, an indirect free kick is awarded”

Based upon Law 13.2, we know that A) a player can that the kick in a manner in which the ball is in contact with his body for more than an instant (which is physically necessary in any case), and B) the kicker can play the ball with both feet.

Law 13.3 tells us that a “double touch” is only an offense if the kicker “touches the ball AGAIN” “after the ball is in play.”

To me, this reads as if the kicker is allowed to touch the ball, with both feet, as long as the kick is not yet finished. At the very least, it is ambiguous and subjective, and does not rise to the level of a clear and obvious error without a more precise definition.

I understand that common sense seems to indicate that a kicker cannot play the ball with both feet; however, Law 13.2 tells us this is not true. And moreover, as it is physically impossible to make contact with the ball with both feet at the *exact* same instant, wouldnt a common sense interpretation of what the Law means by a “simultaneous” kick look exactly like Alvarez’s kick here?

    1. Your comment does not make any sense, as Law 13 is about 'Free kick' and the incident is related to Law 14 ('Penalty kick').

    1. People need to stop looking at law 13 and more on law 14 considering it is the relevant law.

Double touch correct and very brave VAR intervention which indeed must be commended
