And again Youth league final referee comes from big FA. Last few years: France, England, Italy, Germany, Lithuania (must be some mistake)...
ReplyDeleteItalians everywhere...nonsense again and again. Colombo got FIFA badge in 2024...
ReplyDeleteIt's also interesting that local FIFA referees are OK for semi-finals but UEFA invites the Estonian only to act as a fourth official in the final.
ReplyDeleteYes, good remark. I was thinking about that as well.
DeleteCalling a referee only to work as fourth official in Youth League final is rather unexpected, one year ago with Brooks there was another English as fourth, Darren England. Back in 2023, it was the same as 2024, with Delajod - Léonard. I wouldn't be so thrilled about this assignment if I were the Estonian referee.
To add, about Colombo, strong expectations, it's interesting to point out that he had already got a quarterfinal, and this was clearly made because committee couldn't know whether the remaining Italian team would made it to reach semifinals.
After the elimination of FC Internazionale, it was possible to appoint Colombo for the final.
He is a very promising referee, I think he will be surely at a big tournament, strong personality, not afraid of taking decisions, isolating himself from the context. The problem can be that a certain time he can appear as somebody pleasing too much himself, without having a better connection with player to solve the issues, but he can mature under this point of view.
Nevertheless, better to be such a referee, then most of the ones we see nowadays, lacking in personality especially when you have to decide without any external influence.
And finally two words about semifinals, glad to see the Finnish, very promising, I had the occasion to watch him, can become a real talent with natural authority, while I didn't watch in many occasions the Belgian, but this can be another attempt from that federation for the future.
The UEFA Youth League final should not be used to “develop” referees from Top-5 nations.
ReplyDeleteAs if they don’t get enough opportunities to show themselves.
Allard Lindhout does many things in its own way.
ReplyDeleteToday (PSV - Almere City FC) he didn't blow the whistle on a clear handbal in penalty area and after a VAR check he was advised there had been an offside in APP.
He did not go and look at the video himself, talk to the captains of both teams, directly corrected the decision to offside and restarted the game.
This is the first time this procedure has been done in the Netherlands.
Just because Colombo is Italian, he’s getting these opportunities at the start of his FIFA career. This favoritism shown by Rosetti towards his fellow countrymen over all other referees is disappointing.
ReplyDeleteAs already mentioned above, in recent years the finals have always been officiated by referees from the Big five.
What would have spoken against giving the final, for example, to the Finnish referee?
I think after Rosetti, it’s also time to find a chairman from a smaller country. I believe there are several candidates (for example C. Cakir - he is doing a great job in Georgia) who have ended their careers in recent years and who definitely have the authority and charisma to do this job better than Rosetti.
Exactly. What is the point of giving the Youth League final to a Delajod or Colombo?
DeleteThe atmosphere at the Youth League final is “peanuts” compared to their weekly job in Italy and France…. For me a shame and waste. Favoritism at its finest.
While Danny Makkelie was doing a good job in the Pyramids-alAhly game, another Low Countries referee was having a rather less successful time in the Arab world...
ReplyDeletehttps://streambug.org/cv/e790cf
Disgraceful behaviour by Al-Riyadh players (not the first time, ask Barton about their game vs Al-Hilal) and ridiculously spineless reaction by Lambrechts.
DeleteRIY8 (already on a YC) bodychecks (!!!) Lambrechts and gets away scot-free, then RIY11 (who got booked instead) ironically claps in the Belgian referee's face, but isn't given a mandatory 2YC...
The video is not working for me, unfortunately. :/
DeleteYou seem to enjoy games in the Arab world? I have to admit, these type of games (rougher, a bit chaotic, many fouls) are by far more interesting “from a refereeing perspective” than the average 1st leg in a QF Champions League.
I agree Mikael. Makkelei was really good in this very important match that many people were afraid. He had full control and both teams accepted him. His eye for fouls and body language were strong. All his cards were correct and also his assistants made no mistake. I am sure
Deletenew Chairman Sir Oscar Ruiz will be happy with the referee performance, because the result was not changed by referee mistakes.
In the AFC the players are entitled to do almost everything, referees are clearly instructed to not caution dissenting behaviour (and kicking the ball after whistle). I don't know why such trends are present for so long there... To think that AFC RefCom were working really well in 2000s...
DeleteColombo is the most overrated ref in Italian Serie A imo. Far away from an European way of refeering, never a decision taker, always waiting for VAR.
ReplyDeleteIn an article with Belgian referee boss Jonathan Lardot, Jasper Vergoote is said to be included in a UEFA program for the 10 greatest talents of the future.

Jasper Vergoote in SALTRA
ReplyDeleteKey Match Incidents:
16' Rather wrong onside call by AR1 and YC TRA3 for SPA - possible RC for DOGSO?
https://streambug.org/cv/d05c6d
37' Penalty awarded after tackle; even if there is no contact, the challenge could be easily assessed as attempt to kick an opponent, so correct by VAR to stay silent, imo
https://streambug.org/cv/f43c7d
68' PAI impeding; some elements of impeding but the attacker looking for a penalty here, correct play-on
https://streambug.org/cv/bd6897
85' Quite long VAR check at Goal SAL, most likely for a potential handball, rather nothing illegal here
https://streambug.org/cv/8629d1
89' Only one YC TRA8 after scoring the decisive goal - removing a shirt and jumping into the stands, should the player get the double YC here?
https://streambug.org/cv/554813
Other incidents
Delete07' Only a warning after two blatant cases of delaying the restart, Vergoote clearly didn't want to open cards with such offences
https://streambug.org/cv/862565
10' Dissent by SAL21
https://streambug.org/cv/4c5fd0
25' Another warning, this time to SAL39, for SPAlike tripping, a YC could have been issued
https://streambug.org/cv/460b2e
27', 45' Poor reaction to head injuries
https://streambug.org/cv/a871cb
https://streambug.org/cv/7a1e00
45+2' Acceptable no card after this late kick while trying to shoot on goal
https://streambug.org/cv/36b30e
58' Management of SAL5 - tactical foul, delaying the restart
https://streambug.org/cv/5e3397
67' Management of TRA20
https://streambug.org/cv/bfd879
69' Similar situation to the penalty awarded in the first half - defender clearly late but attacker manages to jump over his opponent and falls down without a contact - this time play-on, otherwise SPA
Deletehttps://streambug.org/cv/71840a
70' Play-on after follow-through tackle
https://streambug.org/cv/156f4e
90+2' YC TRA22 for reckless tackle, mandatory
https://streambug.org/cv/fb14b6
16' For me offside but YC for SPA correct decision by referee, no DOGSO.
Delete37' A penalty call that must be supported and correct by VAR to do that, but surely not a call that can make all people agree. For somebody, this can be rather a wrong one, but referee was not wrong in calling it. You can say that defender took a risk with that late tackle without playing ball and just impeding opponent. Nevertheless, I would add, some Italian "glasses" would assess this one as NO PENALTY.
68' In this case I wouldn't have liked a penalty call, rather good play on decision. Correct again by VAR to stay silent, too soft to call it.
85' It looks a correct decision to allow the goall, no contrary evidence.
89' Passionate enthusiasm by Turkish side in living the dream of this competition, also from the fans,. let's allow them to do that. One can consider the YC as given for excessive celebration, including the shirt and what player did afterwards.
For me in 07', it's a litle bit cheap to give an YC for this. Good management with his personality.
DeleteFor 28', if you give an YC it's more for a Reckless than a SPA. Click pause the moment at the contact, you have 4-5 defenders for 2 attackers, not a realy SPA.

ReplyDeleteKey Match Incidents:
06' Penalty awarded for tripping; one could call it soft but never a clear and obvious mistake
https://streambug.org/cv/b59559
39' PAI illegal use of arm; it's rather BAR player who creates a contact with an opponent
https://streambug.org/cv/9825a9
90+2' YC BAR16 for reckless scissor tackle - possible RC for SFP?; you can see how the ankle bends under the impact of the body, a YC is most likely okay but a RC wouldn't have been wrong either, imo
https://streambug.org/cv/86e4fa
Other incidents:
Delete11' Possible YC AZ10 (captain) for dissent; really wild behaviour, should've been cautioned, imo
https://streambug.org/cv/1b42e0
27' Warning AZ8 after careless-reckless kick
https://streambug.org/cv/51152e
28', 85' Referee hit by the ball
https://streambug.org/cv/c0613b
35' Possible YC AZ4 for SPA
https://streambug.org/cv/78ec12
36' YC AZ8 for reckless tackle; no contact but still a dangerous tackle, correct caution
https://streambug.org/cv/8284fe
44' Falling for simulation of BAR7, dissenting behaviour by AZ10
https://streambug.org/cv/58913c
45' Possible YC AZ2 for reckless step on foot
https://streambug.org/cv/4709e2
51' Play-on call after potential SPA impeding
Deletehttps://streambug.org/cv/fb5037
51' YC BAR10 for reckless kick, very harsh if not wrong given the line applied by the referee in this game
https://streambug.org/cv/517add
54' Management of another dissenting behaviour
https://streambug.org/cv/69d5a8
65' YC BAR3 for SPA charging; while I agree it was a foul, I don't think it was a clear SPA
https://streambug.org/cv/aa0ce2
68' Potential step on foot but no replay
https://streambug.org/cv/e2477b
72' Unnecessary advantage and possible YC AZ19 for reckless tackle
https://streambug.org/cv/169ec6
