  1. Very well deserved appointment for the Paraguayan... I hope a very good performance in this match will help him to seal his spot for Russia 2018 :)

  2. Good appointment for Caceres; I think fully deserved; may be Shukralla would have deserved something more than IV official in 3rd place final. Good luck everybody

  3. Watched both Semifinals

    Brazil - England, Ovidiu Hategan
Another good performance, again no tolerance for SPA, good distance from the players he was firm, he was laughing also at times basically the Romanian is a big talent, but I think he should miss WC 2018 for his own development.

    Mali - Spain, Ryuji Sato
What a modern referee! Together with Zwayer I cannot think of a style that embodies a more 'modern' optic. Good relations with the players always showing respect, good feeling for a match, good level of empathy vs distance, etcetera. He did well, very good prevention with some early verbal warnings. A penalty not given at 6', close situation, exaggerated/unnatural fall by ESP player, good decision to play on in my opinion. Penalty he did whistle, was a bit soft but no big mistake. First YC was doubtful but it was a good timing having given quite a few warnings before that, at +47'. But at about 58' he missed a clear SFP for a tackle (high intensity, high hitting point, not much scope to play the ball) for a MLI player. I am very sorry for the Japanese team for the goal, embarrassment for FIFA, I cannot imagine anymore championships without GLT anyway. He dealt well with the MLI bench, he stopped short of apologising but he appriciated the situation well. He showed good feeling after that, on a WC level to my mind, he could have lost control circa the 'ghost goal' but actually that wasn't really close to occuring.
This was an important exam for the Japanese, I think he passed, although it wasn't totally convincing, in terms of isolated decisions. But he confirmed my impression that he is a very good referee, clearly he should be AFC no4 imo.

To my mind big compliment to Shukralla he is only Fourth Official, FIFA are sure of his ticket to Russia. Important for Cácares, but he should also make it, especially in case of a sovreign performance in Saturday.

  4. The South African Football Association (Safa) has confirmed the passing away of former South African referee Ian McLeod.

McLeod officiated at the 1997 Fifa Confederations Cup and 1998 Fifa World Cup during his days as a referee. He also officiated at Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournaments.

Rest in peace, Ian. My thoughts are with his family.

    1. I remember Ian McLeod from the World Cup 1998 when he and Lucien Ousmane Bouchardeau from Niger were called up as late replacements for Sidi Bekaye Magassa from Mali and Charles Masembe from Uganda after under-par performances at the African Cup of Nations earlier that year. Said Belqola, the referee of both the World Cup and the African Cup of Nations final in 1998 already passed away four years later during the World Cup 2002. :-(

    1. 1) No foul, play on. It was an attempt by attacker to challenge defender.
      2) Attacker "puts the leg" exactly when defender is trying to kick the ball, it is a difficult situation, if you whistle penalty there, you can be backed, but in my opinion common sense should suggest "play on"... I don't see faults by defender
      3) Correct because player in offside tries to play the ball, even though his attempt his late, his offside is active
      4) In my opinion not enough for a penalty, or at least referee can be backed.
      5) Still OK to play on. But very risky action by defender...

    2. Thanks. I agree. There was no unnecessary review and all those penalty appeals would have been discussed also in case of VAR intervention. Grey area!

  6. Unfortunately there was a missed clear RC incident in 13' for Caceres :(

  7. 11th minute. Excellent and I do mean excellent! Onsides call by AR2 Zorilla. While everybody was adamant that the Spanish player was offsides. AR2 with an amazing job of spotting English player #18 on the far side of the field as the second to last defender.

    1. 21' AR2 again with a great offside decision, with the gk not being the last defender :)

    2. Agreed! Those plays are sometimes tricky. But easy enough for an AR who is fully focused.

  8. Red card for Leipzig #4 in the 11th minute: https://imgtc.com/w/PrMjA79

Good use of VAR to check for DOGSO, didn't take long at all. Though Leipzig's argument will be that the fouled player wasn't getting the ball anyway?

    1. In my opinion, the referee should have decided himself whether it was dogso. VAR should be used afterwards to correct potential clear mistake, not to referee the game live.

    2. RC for DOGSO can be in my opinion discussed because the attacker had kicked the ball before being fouled, and I think that it was impossible for him to reach it again before keeper. So, YC or even no card, but I must say very difficult. What RayHD said is right as well, a decision by refereee was expected before VAR review, then in case, he could have changed it, but watching the video I get the impression that there was only the whistle and then everything was decided after having watched the video. Not good for the referee on the pitch.

  9. Bamlak Tessema Weyesa (Ethiopia) is refereeing the CAF Champions League final between Al-Ahli SC and Wydad Athletic Club at the moment. The assistant referees are Olivier Safari Kabene (Congo DR) and Walid Ahmad Ali (Sudan). Sidi Alioum (Cameroon) is the fourth official.

The second leg will be handled by Bakary Papa Gassama from Gambia.

  10. Some situations from Saturday's Ekstraklasa games:

    1) Offside or not? Does the player make an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball?

    4) The player deliberately handles the ball. He was already booked earlier in the game. Was it a promising attack and should the second yellow card have followed?
