  2. Sorry, but VAR in Germany is a disaster. Clear penalty not given in Hamburg - Hannover (44' - legs first, then the ball was played). It was sooo clear in replays...

    1. Wow, what a huge mistake by the VAR. Why was there no on-field review?

I literally cannot believe it, what is the understanding in Germany of a CLEAR mistake. This is a clear foul, the opponent is hit and then afterwards the ball is played. I have to agree with RayHD here, VAR is really a disaster in Germany this season. No words for this wrongly rejected penalty...

    3. Well, very likely the fact that the player was able to touch slightly the ball was enough in order to back referee in this call. In addition, he looked immediately sure and determined about his decision. I don't see this as clear mistake, to be honest. It would have been without explanation, in my opinion, only if the player had hit only the opponent.

This article (written by a group of people analyzing refereeing in Germany) says this: "Looking at the replay, many aspects speak for a penalty, because Sané's contact with the Hamburg attacker occurred a second before the contact with the ball. But the head of the DFB Refereeing Committee, Lutz-Michael Fröhlich, advised the video assistants before the beginning of the second round to not behave like detectives. If it is not immediately and indubitabely clear that the referee has made a mistake, they shall not intervene."

    5. Chefren, please. Legs are clearly hit at first :)

Here the moment of contact with leg. The ball has not been played until that moment.

  3. Unfortunately, I have to repeat: English refs are disgrace! What Jonathan Moss and his AR1 did tonight, in last 10 minutes of Liverpool-Tottenham match is scandal.
    a) First penalty for Tottenham:
    1. Kane was about one meter offside (I don't know what AR1 talked to Moss, but there is nothing to say - he had to rise his flag, it was so obvious). Clear mistake for AR1.
    2. Kane dived and it was so obvious, and Moss gave a penalty. Huge mistake from him, there was no contact whatsoever and Kane should be ashamed. I consider him as a fair player.
    3. Goalkeeper was standing IN FRONT OF goal line! How did AR1 missed that. Moss, too. Incredible series of mistakes in only one decision.
    b) Missed penalty for Liverpool.
Seconds before Salah scored extraordinary goal in Messi's manner, Moss and his AR2 missed clear handball in PK area, punishable one (not natural position, hand far away from the body). Happily Liverpool scores.
    c) Culmination: Second penalty for Tottenham
Moss, main referee, after Lallana fall down waved his hands, signalizing no penalty. But AR1, who didn't see such a clear offside (Kane was 3 times offside in the match, neither one call was made), now "saw" foul and signalized PK. But, was there a foul? I think not, and many people do the same! How can you give a PK, if you are AR and you are not 100% sure??? And how could Moss, who saw that there was no PK, allow his AR to overturn his decision???After this disgrace the commentator said that we had the opportunity to see why England, with such big history and with one of top 3 National leagues in the World, doesn't have the ref on World Cup.

This kind of mistakes happen every day in England - I don't think that there is national competition with so many mistakes made by the refs. And that often occur in very important matches, such was this one.
I think, and I am not kidding, that FA should consider the possibility to call the best European refs to whistle their derby matches, like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt do. Beside Oliver, Taylor and Atkinson (and they also make mistakes often), there is no single one ref in England that deserves to whistle Premier League matches. Moss, Marriner, Swarbrick, Dean, Pawson, Frien, Mason, Madley - they all are European third league among the refs.

    1. The goal with the offside position is a matter of opinion. He is standing offide but didn’t challenge for the ball or precent the opponents ability to play the ball.

    2. Indeed, Victor is right. Situation is very difficult to read, or at least one can have different opinions. It is possible to assess Kane's offside position as not active / interfering with the play, because defender tries a deliberate play and therefore the attacker would be alllowed to participate in the action. Then, about the contact with the keeper, these situations are always difficult to read. A minimum touch can be enough, watching the video and some replays I can't be sure, it could be a dive yes, but without the keeper in front of him, Kane wouldn't have had the need to jump.
So at least one can discuss.
About the second penalty assigned by the same assistant referee: here in my opinion mistake. True that there is a contact, but watching the incident, I have the perception that this is mostly caused by attacker movement. No big faults from defender there and the call is definitely soft if not wrong (again, I want to underline, just my opinion, but this penalty could be supportable by other people as well).
Finally, it would be nice to have a video about the missed handball, I don't find it.
      Thanks!

    3. Penalty no1: Good teamwork not to whistle an offside, but quite clear simulation by Kane, reminding me on Pedro-Lloris-Kassai, but this time referee took wrong decision. I always say it here, Moss is a typical English referee- great manager on the pitch, but breaks down during crucial moments. He was even in a very good position to assess the duel.

From what I've seen anyway, at least acceptable not to assign a penalty for LIV by handball, in the end it is irrelevant in the bigger picture anyway.

Penalty no2: Very irritating situation. Moss has a good insight into the (lack of) contact, and correctly gives the gesture for play-on, which is basically accepted by all players. What AR1 Smart did is VERY irritating actually IMO:
1- He has NO good view! All he could see was the tackle, it is logical that a tackle like that DOES result in a foul (and the TOT player falling supports that) but Moss has a near perfect view, and in 94' of a crucial Premier League clash absolutely you must be a LOT more certain than that, especially looking from a zero angle. It wasn't like Smart thought Moss missed the situation on a perception level- he could see the play-on gesture.
2- It is one thing to shout into the micro "penalty, penalty, penalty" but to FLAG it, is absolutely unnecessary and quite amateurish. He gives Moss NO option but to whistle a penalty, which by the referee's body language he basically did not believe in. Medially he has made Moss look like a total idiot.

Crucial mistakes by Moss and Smart, one can say that VAR is rather needed in Premier League (but would VAR have even changed those two decisions? I am not totally convinced...).

  4. Bournemouth match sunday. Minute 68. Horrific studs tackle. Even a referee who has the first game in his/her career would know that's a red card but only a yellow given.

    1. I swear that the EPL has regressed to once again being that horrific style of league that it was in the 80's and early 90's.

  5. You erased my comment about two enormous mistakes in Liverpool-Tottenham match??? Why? There is no freedom of speech on this blog? What did I say wrong? Did I insult someone if I said that the Premier League's refs are third European league (except 3 among them)? In almost every single derby match in England, that decides about the title/CL and therefore millions of Euros, refs make blatant mistakes. Maybe they will be punished, probably not - AR got 5 minutes of glory. And no one cares. You, too, obviously. Well, there are lot of other blogs where you can write your opinions. My first (would be second, if the comment wasn't erased) and last comment on this blog.

    3. Ok, Chefren, thanks for explanation. Maybe I used strong words, but believe me, English refs are annoying me every single day, every single match I watched. Maybe I was wrong about offside, I didn't see whether Lovren touched the ball, totally missed that, but both penalties are clear mistakes IMO.
I didn't watch Watford-Chelsea tonight, but I saw in slow motion two crucial situations (2nd YC and penalty for Watford). I saw it from only one angle, but my feeling was that Mike Dean made mistakes in both occasions. About PK I am pretty sure that it was another dive, with obviously big scream from the attacker.

    5. Watford vs chelsea is a dive not a penalty. Same situation like Kane. Jumps before contact and simulates.

  6. The Qatar federation confirms that there are 48 referees (36 + 12 VAR) invited to the World Cup seminar, and lists the names, some knowledgeable of the Arabic language to help us?

  7. I have watched Inter - Spartak very well handled by Nicolas Rainville.

    Positives:
    - setting the defensive wall half a metre before instead of exactly on the line of penalty area, very wise (2x)
    - consistency: all cards were spot-on (in a game involving A-teams it would be possible to manage first two yellow cards but showing them in this game was surely not a mistake)
    - correct application of the LoTG and current instructions at preventing GK from releasing the ball (no SPA in 52', again no SPA in 84', but here a yellow card for PI has been correctly issued, well done!)
    - very alert approach through the whole game, detected some handballs that were difficult to spot, you can see his alertness and anticipation after the 3-3 goal from the penalty spot
    - very good, composed and clear body language, gestures
    - smiling sometimes softened the players' reaction on some cards

    Points for consideration:
    - put more attention to stealing metres at free kicks
    - run more in order to gain the best possible angle

    1. Thanks for this interesting report.
Very good management of the player who disturbed twice the keeper, absolutely correct and mandatory to book him for persistent infringement in the second case. Both were not promising attacks, even though possible quick counterattacks.
About the penalty appeal for handball: if I'm not wrong, after waving on, referee made the gesture of indicating the part of the arm where the contact with ball occurred. In this case, a mistake of intepretation, indeed a contact with that part of the arm would be still punishable if deliberate (it was not shoulder). So if referee assessed the touch as unintentional, it is OK in the meaning of a supportable call, but if he assessed that the ball had touched a not punishable part of the body, he was wrong.
In any case, it is a good signal to see a referee so attentive and making many gestures while reading the game.
Penalty to Spartak: nothing to say there, correct call.

About handball showing, i think he was setting his microphone not showing where it hitted.
