  1. The best games on paper goes to Undiano Mallenco and Karasev... Karasev badly needed this before the World Cup, he's anyway going to the WC without any CL KO this season!!

    1. Also extremely happy to see Kralovec back in contention for important matches... The Czech is gaining back trust of the Committee once again slowly!!

  2. I got three names right, but not the games, however this is not a big problem ;) My only mistake was to predict Oliver, we will see Undiano Mallenco.
Some names for second legs: Zwayer, Collum, Oliver, Kassai...

    Replies
    1. I would hope to see Kuipers/Rocchi in place of Kassai... Is there any chance for Taylor btw??

      Delete
    2. Oliver got only one game so far while Taylor two, so for this reason Oliver should be the first option at moment for a futher English appointment.

      Delete
    3. Plus Oliver getting a CL KO already shows that he's probably trusted a bit more currently??

      Delete
  3. Undiano Mallenco has been rewarded after the good performance in Roma - Shakhtar, I guess that the ball-boy incident has been assessed as not that important. All the rest was more than good.
Královec deserved appointment as well, after an expected level game in Champions League. The hope is that the Czech is back again at a higher level, but we must still wait before stating that.
Karasev with a nice Iberian clash involving a Spanish and a Portuguese team, of course as WC referee he should have got more, but I think we wont see him at all in Champions League and this game is better than nothing of course.
Finally, Haţegan in Rome. Another deserved assignment after a good game in Champions League.

    1. I agree, that those are good appointments for all of them. But it might also mean, that they won't get more this season. I think, all 4 had also chances for an EL SF. Of course, those chances have not disappeared, but the QF appointment should make it less likely.

      Delete
    2. Last year both Karasev and Hategan got a UEL QF followed by UEL SF so I think that won't be any problem this time too with options so less!!

      Delete
  4. It's so good to see the performance principle is the only criterion this season. Well done, UEFA!

    1. But rotation of appointments isn't done well which was excellently done last year... Last season's rotation of appointments among all the good performing referees were excellent!!

      Delete
    2. Because there were more options available last season.

      Delete
    3. Even when there were options rotations were poor... Nothing can justify Brych getting 2 R16 matches with Mateu and Lahoz not having a game... That's a classic example of poor appointing just like Cakir's 2 SFs, however great the referee himself might be!!

      Delete
    4. Well, I can't fully agree with you Soham for last year. For example, we saw Mazic only in EL 1/4 finals. Many people on this blog expected him in one of the finals and what happened? He didn't get anything - not even a EL semifinal match! There were 4 CL semifinal matches, 4 EL semifinal matches and two finals - not a single match for him and his last year was very good. On RAP we saw that all crucial incidents in Bayern-Arsenal he solved correctly and in Besiktas-Lyon he was great all 120 minutes. I still wonder why he was treated that way last year (ok, he got Super cup final and Confederations cup final, but those are different competitions and you choose the best for most important matches).

      Delete
    5. I was talking about rotation and even distribution of matches which done well last year... Atkinson, Mateu Lahoz, Kuipers and Cakir handled 4 CL SFs and Rocchi, Marciniak, Karasev and Hategan whistled 4 EL SFs... I think Mazic was initially planned for the EL final but eventually had to make way for Skomina, who had to make way for Brych... And why I said the appointments were spread out very evenly is because none of the referees got more than 5 CL matches during the season and that's excellent rotation and spread as per deserving performances!!

      Delete
  5. My predictions for second legs:
    ManCity-Liverpool: Mateu
    Roma-Barcelona: Turpin
    Real-Juventus: Kuipers
    Bayern-Sevilla: Mazic

    Salzburg-Lazio: Kassai
    Marseille-Leipzig: Collum
    CSKA-Arsenal: Zwayer
    Sporting-Atletico: Marciniak

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I find this set of predictions really good... But I think Marciniak and Kassai are rather uncertain... I've a sneaky suspicion that Skomina will appear somewhere in EL QF and will get the CL Final after that!!

      Delete
    2. There are also Oliver and Sidiropolous as serious contenders for a EL QF - maybe Kassai will indeed miss out.
Marciniak should get an appointment before the WC IMO. Could also be EL SF, of course.

      Delete
    3. Better to have a QF rather than SF to get the confidence back for Marciniak... I think Kuipers will also be sent to EL??

      Delete
    4. Sidiropoulos was in my mind yesterday as well, but if I'm not wrong it was reported that he had some trouble in his appearance and what makes me think, is that a quite long time has passed since his game (15/02).

      Delete
    5. But his Partizan v Viktoria Plzen UEL R32 match went really well??

      Delete
    6. Somebody reported that he had issued a (second) YC for nothing, if I remember well. However, I didn't watch the game and it would be interesting to know more about that.

      Delete
    7. It was for illegal use of arms (?) I suppose

      Delete
    8. Manchester United do not accept Matéu
      Lahoz since last year.

      Delete
  6. Predictions.
    City-Liverpool, Matéu
    Roma-Barcelona, Marciniak
    Real-Juventus, Skomina
    Bayern-Sevilla, Mazic

    CSKA-Arsenal, Kassai
    Sporting-A.Madrid, Collum
    O. Marseille-Leipzig, Rocchi
    Salzburg-Lazio, Kuipers

  11. Excellent onside by Anton Averianov for Atletico goal!
    Very, very tight!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Minute 6' in Arsenal - CSKA, I think outstanding offside flag by AR1 in Kralovec team. More than tight, but offside...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have a different feeling but waiting for a screenshot.

      Delete
    2. Furthermore an important offside by AR2 at 3' that was at least doubtful. And the 1-0 resulted from hitting Kralovec, but it was not really his fault.
I like his motivated impression so far!

      Delete
    3. Agree with @RayHD goal cancelled by Slysko was correct.

      Delete
    4. Kralovec might need to more strictly manage CSKA#03 for dissent.
And now correct penalty by AAR1, but I think Kralovec-Slysko-Ardeleanu lost the player who fouled (DOGSO:YC missing).

    5. Now excellent onside by AR1 for the 3-1!

    10. Look at the last replay in 1/4 speed. It looks like a perfect dive, impossible to detect for the referees.

      Delete
    11. Indeed, no correct penalty apologies

      Delete
    12. Clear penalty to me. Clearly trips him. I don’t see how it eould not be a foul. Misses the ball and gets his leg very clearly.

      Delete
    13. That's a clear penalty. Good decision by AAR and Referee

      Delete
  13. Very challenging game for Kralovec, now a penalty assigned by AAR1, I think.

    1. Never a penalty, play on.

    2. DrMr, you've lots of info on Mazic... Is he doing a game next week??

    3. He will be appointed, 200% :)

      Delete
    4. Great... I'm expecting him in Munich

  14. Lazio - Salzburg: teamwork in Hategan team. A penalty was spotted very likely by AAR2, with the ball away in the middle of penalty area, a player from SS Lazio hit the opponent by his arm in face, it was reckless and nothing more. I praise the Romanian crew, there was a clear and very good sharing of responsibilities.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Only 30 minutes and Hategan is already having troubles in controlling the match. IMHO its time to issue some cards.
On the penalty for Salzburg... one can say that according to the LOTG it’s penalty, but... if you whistle that one, than you should whistle three or four penalties per match!

    ReplyDelete
  16. 45’+1 penalty appeal from Lazio: Correct decision to play on

    ReplyDelete
  17. Incredible scenes at half time whistle in Rome: Inzaghi, Lazio coach, making dissenting gestures against AAR2. He looked ready to attack the referee... I would have sent off him.
A few seconds before half time, Hategan had played on following another penalty appeal by Lazio, in this case a good decision, as attacker went deliberately against the defender to get the call.
This will be a more than difficult second half... to be watched.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 3 possible penalties in Undiano's match:
    8': Foul against Bruma
    25': handball Forsberg
    45': Foul against Augustin
Would be nice to get some videos (replays for 25' came some minutes later), my first impression was 8': borderline, 25': missing penalty, 45': unclear, maybe a dive (no replays due to the following goal)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 45' was a blatant dive, missing YC...

      Delete
    2. 8. Minute Aus meiner Sicht kein Foul, der spielt klar den Ball! Handspiel muss er pfeifen. Gelb bei Augustin muss er geben

      Delete
    3. Not one penalti, I think.

      Delete
  19. 50': wrong offside flag by AR2 in Lazio - Salzburg, denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Difficult call.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hategan is one referee under pressure :(

    ReplyDelete
  21. I’m wondering how many fouls Salzburg will do before getting a YC...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Finally, after 19 fouls, the first YC to Salzburg. This one wasn’t deserved, but there are at least 2 missing. I didn’t like Hategan’s management tonight

      Delete
  22. Too many phantom fouls in attack whistled by Královec. I don't like such approach.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Overall Kralovec showed a (still) expected level. Concentrated and diligent optic. His foul detection reminded me on the not-so-good days of a French referee but I cannot remember his name...
I think Kralovec had the right 'instinct' to not whistle the penalty, but the problem was everyone (CSKA included) expected a penalty.
Otherwise not that good management of dissent, not that proactive approach against CSKA#03 who then dissented clearly for a third time, but instead he cautioned CSKA#10 in the same incident which was not that smart imo. Not that good whistle language, very monotonous. But still a good development from the Czech, he is in a decent shape.

  24. Predictions for 2nd leg :

    Champions League :

Roma v Barcelona : Clement Turpin
Bayern v Sevilla : Milorad Mazic
Man City v Liverpool : Antonio Mateu Lahoz
Real v Juventus : Björn Kuipers

    Europa League :

Marseille v Leipzig : Gianluca Rocchi
Salzburg v Lazio : Michael Oliver
CSKA Moscow v Arsenal : Felix Zwayer
Sporting v Atletico : William Collum

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My predictions for return leg:
I think that due to different reasons, Collina will not have many choices. On 25 elite referees we should exclude Atkinson, Borbalan, most probably Marciniak and Eriksson plus the 8 ones appointed for the first leg. 13 remaining. Personally I would send directly Rocchi and Mazic for SF CL and Collum for SF EL to have three safe options. Oliver and Taylor are just promoted even if the 1st one seems to be granted good consideration. So I would say:
      Champions League :

Roma v Barcelona : VIKTOR KASSAI
      (qualification seems already decided)
Bayern v Sevilla : CLEMENT TURPIN
Man City v Liverpool : ANTONIO MATEU LAHOZ (no doubts)
Real v Juventus : BJORN KUIPERS
(top clash already decided, good to restart)

      Europa League :

Marseille v Leipzig : DAMIR SKOMINA
      (warm up to CL Final)
Salzburg v Lazio : TAROS SIDIROPOLUS OR MICHAEL OLIVER
CSKA Moscow v Arsenal : FELIZX ZWAYER
Sporting v Atletico : DENITZ AYTEKIN

In this way Cakir, Kuipers, Rocchi and Mazic can be available for SF CL and Collum, hategan, Karasev, ???? for SF EL.

    2. Mazic has been appointed for the 2nd Leg CL QF as confirmed by DrMr so definitely Kassai will be out of the reckoning!!

The striker plays the ball and runs straight into the not moving defender. At least it should be backed.

I also liked the way he reacted to the coach. It's a calm and professional way of reacting to that.

  29. UPDATE: Praprotnik and Jug were replaced today for appointments in Slovenia on Wednesday/Thursday. It seems Skomina's team WILL appear in Europe!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Very interesting, so appointments have been made today.
Skomina in quarterfinals means that we will have him, Mazic, Turpin and Mateu, I think. Still no Kuipers... but let's see.

      Delete
    2. Maybe his appointment became "available" due to already decided clashes, as a "calm" route towards the final?

      Delete
    3. Very likely, this is the explanation.
It is really amazing that we can make such speculations, without being inside UEFA, but only knowing that some officials are appointed and then changed... if Skomina will appear in a CL game on next week, that's almost sure now, we will be able to confirm that our thoughts were right.

      Delete
    4. Such "calculations" were obviously not planned for Mazic. One could really see that as an argument in favour of Skomina regarding the CL final. But still only a speculation of course.

      Delete
    5. It maybe an EL appointment for Skomina also... In most of the last years (except in Clattenburg's case), the trend has been for the CL final referee to appear in 1 CL R16 match, 1 EL QF and then the CL final!!

      Delete
    6. A new set of domestic appointments was released. Vincic has a match on Friday, therefore Skomina and team in CL, not EL.

      Delete
    7. Preferably on Tuesday?? After doing a match on Wednesday and then again having a match on Friday must be very hectic!!

      Delete
    8. As Mateu seems almost certain for English clash and Skomina had Barcelona in previous round, I have my doubts. BAY-SEV would be my guess. It's true it can be hectit, but nevertheless easier for an AAR ...

      Delete
    9. Apparently it's pretty meaningless to bring Skomina up for a game all of a sudden... Some much deserved rest snatched away when 3 ties are almost decided in the 1st leg!!

    1. Thanks!
08': Good decision, defender got the ball
25': Most likely missed penalty. Undiano was already looking to the middle...
45': Replay was shown in the halftime break in German TV: 100% dive. If you want to defend Undiano, he allowed Marseille's counter-attack instead of the YC..

      Delete
    2. 8': Not 100% sure about the touch of the ball, in any case neither a clear penalty, so supportable by Undiano. No reaction by referee after the evaluation of the incident, he stood still and he was hit by ball. He was still thinking to the previous incident.

25': Totally missed by Undiano, who again, similar to the previous incident, was missing in alertness and then in reacting to incidents, not a so good performance under this point of view. In any case, there isn't a 100% clear replay about the touch by arm, but it seems a penalty, as Philipp stated.
45': Without replay, it looks like a more than blatant dive, no contact at all, Undiano should have stopped the game and booked the player.

    1. This is the story with SS Lazio this season, Soham some days ago was asking for knowing more... for now, you can read this article, but there is something more! Rizzoli is experiencing big troubles. Everything was originated only due to a missed handball penalty in Lazio - Torino (referee Giacomelli, VAR Di Bello), then game after game other incidents happened, but what it has become now can't be described!
So you also understand why yesterday in Europa League Lazio players, fans and coach were so frustrated... definitely shocking. No words, agree with you, Mikael.

  33. About Champions League final, in both 2016 and 2017 the last game before the big assignment was observed by Trentalange.

Brych: Anderlecht - Manchester United in Europa League.
Clattenburg: Atletico Madrid - Bayern in Champions League.

So, if Skomina gets Trentalange on next week...

    1. I thought Bebek is a guesst in Saudi Arabia but I checked, he is regulary appointed there, this is his 9th match, he has the most matches after Al Mirdasi and Clattenburg. I must say I am very surprised... Who knows, maybe he is thinkig about moving to Saudi Arabia, would not be surprise to me.

    2. Indeed, his name is very often visible in the appointments. Let me also say, that he is always appointed with Petrović and Grgić.

      Delete
    3. Well Petrovic and Grgic are best assistants in Croatia for years and Bebek's regular assistants in Europe for 8 years now (Petrovic is Bebek's assistant for 18 years, from 2002 when Bebek was appointed on FIFA list), Grgic became member of the team in 2010 when Tomislav Setka retired. All in all, one of the most experienced referee trios in Europe.

The video is SFP for sure.

    4. Why would a top referee in top physical and psychological form need to "rest"? It's quite logical IMO to appoint him in Europe in order to reach the final with continuous appointments. I'm accepting reasons against appointing e.g. shielding from crucial mistakes that could endanger the apperance in final, but not "resting".

    5. @Soham: In the case of a semi-final FC BAYERN MÜNCHEN - FC LIVERPOOL, Antonio Mateu Lahoz could handle the first leg match.

      Delete
    6. @Peter why not second leg?

      Delete
    7. I guess that UEFA would like to avoid complaints that Mateu Lahoz could try to influence the (decisive) second leg match in order to bestow the preferred opponent on Barcelona/Real.

    8. History seems to confirm my assumption:

2016/17: MATEU LAHOZ handled the first-leg match AS MONACO FC - JUVENTUS (the other one was REAL MADRID CF - CLUB ATLÉTICO DE MADRID).

2015/16: CLATTENBURG handled the first-leg match CLUB ATLÉTICO DE MADRID - FC BAYERN MÜNCHEN (the other one was MANCHESTER CITY FC - REAL MADRID CF).

2014/15: RIZZOLI handled the first-leg match FC BARCELONA - FC BAYERN MÜNCHEN (the other one was JUVENTUS - REAL MADRID CF).

2013/14: WEBB handled the first-leg match REAL MADRID CF - FC BAYERN MÜNCHEN (the other one was CLUB ATLÉTICO DE MADRID - CHELSEA FC).

2012/13: Both matches (FC BAYERN MÜNCHEN - FC BARCELONA and BORUSSIA DORTMUND - REAL MADRID CF) between GER and ESP, therefore no referees from GER and ESP appointable.

2011/12: BRYCH handled the first-leg match CHELSEA FC - FC BARCELONA (the other one was FC BAYERN MÜNCHEN - REAL MADRID CF).

2010/11: STARK handled the first-leg match REAL MADRID CF - FC BARCELONA (the other one was FC SCHALKE 04 - MANCHESTER UNITED FC).

2010/11: VELASCO CARBALLO handled the first-leg match FC SCHALKE 04 - MANCHESTER UNITED FC (the other one was REAL MADRID CF - FC BARCELONA).

2009/10: ROSETTI handled the first-leg match FC BAYERN MÜNCHEN - OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS (the other one was FC INTERNAZIONALE MILANO - FC BARCELONA).

01:13 Disallowed goal for handball, decision taken directly by official on the pitch, either Pasqua himself or AR2. VAR supported with a silent check. In my opinion not a deliberate handball, the player was also booked, because then he scored after the handball. Too harsh but it is nowadays common practice to whistle every touch by hand before a goal.
01:22 penalty assigned to Juventus after VAR review, referee had played on with clear gestures, then he went to rewatch and he made the choice of changing his decision. No card, and this is a mistake.
02:50 penalty to Juventus, directly whistled by referee, VAR supported the decision, nothing to say in this case, but the call is really soft in my opinion, because the contact was mostly caused by attacker, without a real fault by defender, in any case for sure never a clear mistake. If you watch only the live sequence, you can indeed get the impression of a simulation, or at least an exaggerated contact.

    1. No video, but I can say, that it was a clear penalty, i.e. correct intervention by VAR1 Petersen (in his first match in this role).

    2. What is the case with Tobias Stieler, Phillip? As I understand he gave a controversial 2nd YC (dissent?) to Petersen last weekend but it was a big talking point after the game. Now I see that Petersen played today, so I presume that the suspension was cancelled by DFB? Lots of criticism towards Stieler...

      Delete
    3. I saw that situation with Steinhaus. Clear penalty, after she watched a replay, she looked assistant like she thought "you had to see that". Without VAR this is assistant's responsibility IMO, ...

      Delete
    4. @estkane: After a penalty given to Schalke, Petersen was booked for dissent. Some minutes later, Petersen again/still complained and Stieler sent him off with a 2nd YC. Freiburg then claimed, that Petersen was not aware of the 1st YC. Indeed, when Stieler showed the first card, Petersen was standing with the back to the referee and could not see it. However Stieler prodded him and told him, he was booked, which Petersen apparently did not notice.
So Freiburg appealed against the automatic ban and the second instance (DFB federal court) agreed, that the first booking was invalid and therefore the ban was cancelled.

Surprising verdict in my opinion, because I thought, the referee showing a card + speaking to the player would be sufficient. This might lead to players turning away or fixing their socks even more, when they are about to be booked - and further appeals, when a booking was not clearly communicated.
Of course, referees should avoid to show the YC to the player's back.

    6. Thanks for clearing this situation up, Philipp! Very interesting situation. And I agree with you, incidents like these could lead to very silly actions by the offenders to 'avoid seeing YC'. In most cases they get the knowing by the words of the referee or by the sound of the whistle that they are getting booked and they turn their backs or run away to retake their positions.

    9. The DFB's decision to nullify the red card is absurd! You can see the player's reaction after being expelled. He knew well that he was already on the referee's book (Stieler clearly told him that at the first YC incident)... Unbelievable! The coach' behaviour is unacceptable as well.

  43. Atkinson missed 1 absolute stonewaller penalty for City in the 2nd half... Probably one more missed handball penalty in 1st half which was not easy to detect and also one RC most likely missed to Fernandinho for a very poor tackle on Lingard!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agreed Atkinson struggled tonight. He managed the last minutes even really well after all what happened, I think any other PL referee and we could be seeing a real mess with RCs etc.
Missing penalty was a big mistake, some other doubtful calls including a potential penalty in the first half, not really predictable in the match as a whole.
Overall he was okay, besides the big mistake that was decisive, I'll try to find some videos.

    2. Atkinson got many criticisms from Italian press today.
It was reported that his performance was the reason for which England will not have referees at World Cup.
Definitely too harsh and surely wrong assumption, but you know, journalists don't know so much about refereeing.

      Delete
    3. While it is true that Atkinson's performance wasn't too great, but the media coverage about no English referee in the WC since the very onset is all bonkers!! Michael Oliver will shut everyone up from the next big world tournament onwards I hope!!

      Delete
    4. Yes Soham, I'm reading everywhere about the fact that England will not have a referee at WC, this seems to be more important than the referees themselves called for the tournament. For certain aspects, I can't understand that.
We follow UEFA refereeing and so for us no suprise there, but all people and journalists seem to be shocked about that!

      Delete
    5. Yes journalists don't know what has exactly caused this situation and neither are they interested to learn from people who actually know it... It's very clear that if not for Mark Clattenburg's departure, England would've had a referee in Russia... In addition to that, Michael Oliver was too young and new to top level refereeing in 2014 to be included in the pre-list... So as a logical consequence this time it had to be without an English referee... Obviously Scot William Collum deserved it but missed out due to politics but that's a different issue!! But as you rightly say, the focus should be on the referees who are selected for the World Cup and not on the absence of English referees... English refereeing will be represented once again in their full glory in the Euro 2020 for sure and my bet is on Oliver!!
