  2. 2nd CL game ever for Gestranius.

Uilenberg for Gil Manzano, hopefully he has a luckier test game than Schalke-Porto last year observed by De Bleeckere.

  3. Turpin to be observed by Roberto Rosetti!

    1. Wow. Big signal here. But I don't understand why he was replaced from Ligue 1 game a few days ago, very strange. Maybe, I can guess, he felt something like a possible injury and he didn't want to risk that game.

      Delete
    2. Maybe Turpin was just a bit sick.

      Delete
    3. I could believe that Garibian in lieu of reading observer's name for his CL game directly replaced him with Delajod; it is no secret that he makes 'favourable' conditions for Turpin.

On the other hand maybe there are other explanations like illness, family issue or sth.

  4. Paweł Gil confirmed as VAR in Marciniak's game should mean that 1-1 goal scored by Napoli was considered as correct decision. We had a discussion on the blog, but let me say this new rule is not clear at all, if you don't have to consider the attacking phase, it is totally at referee's discretion to decide whether a handball is directly related to a goal scored or not. Very confusing.

  5. Good matches for Orsato, del Cerro Grande and Turpin - but also normal appointments for them given their current status.
Zwayer for the big match in group H chosen above Brych is a bit surprising.
Gestranius seems to be ready for VAR now, I think his participation in a VAR course was reported recently (?)

In general, UEFA played it safe with 7 Elite referees on Wednesday, some of those matches could also have gone to top First Group members.
Together with the EL appointments and the questionmarks behind Cakir and Rocchi, there are not many top referees left for deciding matches on MD6 - basically only Makkelie and Mateu. So maybe some double appointments will be needed.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For MD6 you can add also Skomina as top referee left for deciding matches.

      Delete
    2. But he has EL on Thursday - so it would be a double appointment.

    1. Let's wait for Matchday 6. If not appointed, for sure there is something very big... and we can't know what.

    2. cakirs mark was in Matchday 1 Chelsea-Valencia 7,4
      and Slovenia-Austria 7,9

    3. To analyze the situation surrounding Mr. Cüneyt Cakir and his no-appointments since more than two months:
He is since one of the reliables, continuous and best referee in UEFA and FIFA since 10-12 years.
His situation in Turkish Süper League is solid and without any problems like the other decades.

In UEFA Champions League Matchday 1 he made to two mistakes, no RC for Valencia player and a wrong assessed handball penalty for Chelsea (player missed goal).

In UEFA EURO Qualifers game between Slovenia and Austria he assessed a wrong YC, it should have been a straight RC for Austrian player.

Maybe we can analyze some points why he does not gets any UEFA game since more than two months:

1.Performance principles: Yes, he made mistakes in UCL and EURO Qualifiers but this referee is since many decades and one of the constant officals around the globe. And when performance principles should always apply (for everybody), how is Viktor Kassai still in UEFA Elite.
No bad words to Viktor Kassai, I watched a few of his matches in Europe this year and I think he should be part of UEFA Officals next summer at EURO 2020.
But after some VERY BIG mistakes like UEFA EURO 2012, Manchester City - Donetsk and controversial matches (Real-Bayern) he is still in Elite category and always gets his second chance.

2.Possible injury: He has regular appointments in Turkish Süper League as main referee and VAR.

3.Any conflicts with UEFA Referee chief Roberto Rosetti: We know that both have a great relationship...

  7. About Italian appointments, only Orsato has been appointed in this matchday.
This leaves: Rocchi, Massa, Guida and I think one between Di Bello and Irrati (quite sure the former, if you ask me) to be appointed on MD6.
So for this reason I tend already to say that Rocchi will be in Champions League, difficult to imagine that with all these Italian referees to be appointed, all of them will get Europa League.
I think that Massa could get a game in CL after having missed the opportunity until today. It will be interesting to see Guida third game after his CL debut as well. Then maybe Di Bello with another game for gaining experience before getting promoted in future to Category 1.

    1. For Rocchi, Bayern-Tottenham could be a good farewell match - if they don't need him in a more important match. (I know he had them already on MD1, but one could make an exception)

  9. What's going on with Del Cerro Grande since 2 seasons?
Was he underestimated by Collina? Is he appreciated at his fair value or overestimated by Rosetti? Did he progress suddenly?

    ReplyDelete
  10. For me, the most important game is Valencia- Chelsea. The committee seems to trust Zwayer very much. He seems to be in top 8 at the moment: Cakir, Brych, Skomina, (Rocchi), Mateu Lahoz, Turpin, Makkelie, Zwayer, Hategan/ Marciniak.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You forgot Del Cerro among the top 8. And indeed he is clearly on first positions.

      Delete
    2. Taylor and Orsato probably as well based on recent appointments.
And Kuipers based on experience / general standing.
But OK, then it's not a Top 8 anymore...

      Delete
    3. I didn't talk to my personal top 8, I talked about what I think is UEFA's top 8 (based on palamres and last appointments). Indeed, I forgot about Orsato. About Kuipers, I don't know what to say. After so many finals (and final tournaments) in his career he shoulkd retire. I said many times: there are many young referees who want/must to whistle important games, not only Kuipers (or Cakir).

In my opinion, UEFA's top 8 is: (Kuipers), Cakir, Skomina, Mateu Lahoz, Orsato, Turpin, Makkellie, Zwayer, Hategan/ Marciniak. I didn't mention rocchi because, as I know, he will retire at the end of the year. I can't imagine Del Cerro Grande in UEFA's top 8. Yes, he is well-placed, but not in front of those mentioned by me. Anyway, Hategan in FIFA Club World Cup is an important sign, maybe he's not only 8th.

    4. Del Cerro is better referee that Matéu.

  12. OT

José María Sánchez Martínez (UEFA, 1st) will officiate the Greek SL derby between Olympiakos and PAOK on Sunday. His Assistants will be Raúl Cabañero Martínez and Iñigo Prieto López. FO will be Sidiropoulos. VAR will be David Medié Jiménez and AVAR José Gallego García.

Once again, Melo Pereira can't bring an Elite referee for the biggest match of the League (both teams are 1st). Last year it was a 3rd Group, now a 1st. At least that's an improvement.

  13. Honestly, Valencia players are falling over like a sack of potatoes every time someone makes contact with half a fingernail.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Only watching in the background, I had the impression of a convincing 1H by Zwayer. He used his best skills: proactiveness and verbal warnings. Missed YC in the opening stages for a reckless strike, though giving it was not really of any tactical value.

      Delete
  14. your opinion please..

    ZENIT-LYON
    36th dogso of gk?
42nd goal should be disallowed for push?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Right decision by Zwayer to give the goal for Chelsea.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. At the end correct decision, ONSIDE and no foul, too soft for whistling, mobbing from Valencia players after that...

      Delete
  16. Penalty for Valencia, correct decision in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. What is your rationale for giving penalty to Valencia???
I thought play on or else free against Valencia, as Chelsea player was ahead, while striker bundled over his right leg

      Delete
    2. Tottaly wrong, even foul for Chelsea on Jorginho.

      Delete
  17. Clean challenge by Kante. Wrong foul, incorrect YC. Rolling round by Valencia not helping Zwayer, but it appears to be working for them. Question marks on the penalty also.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Can we conclude that Zwayer in hot/challenging matches always fail to keep control and to take correct decisions?

      Delete
    2. I think that it wasn't a poor performance by Zwayer but for some reasons he looked to my eyes a bit annoyed when managing players and taking crucial decisions, I don't know why. I saw him in very different habits on previous seasons.

      Delete
    3. I agree Chefren. I think he was annoyed of the Valencia players rolling round and mobbing him the whole match.

      Delete
    4. I thought Zwayer was unusually poor as was expecting far more from him.
Too much let go from Valencia's players behavior, few silly mistakes.
Incorrectly awarded penalty to Valencia, incorrect YC for Kante after fair and easy challenge.
Also incorrectly read few other free kicks.
      I am fairly disappointed

      Delete
  18. Absolutely excellent no flag by AR1 in Liverpool before 0-1, Liverpool wanted a foul to be whistled but never VAR stuff. Not even foul if you ask me. Del Cerro got confirmation by Sánchez Martínez right now.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Excellent onside decisison but you can see Mertens looking twice to see where van Dijk is and then he strikes his ellbow into van Dijk. Maybe foul but I agree no VAR stuff.

      Delete
    2. Agreed, Chefren. Very close call correctly taken. VAR confirmation took quite long if you ask me, but you have to check very carefully as a VAR in situations like this.
Also, correctly disallowed goal by Turpin and AR1 for an offside position. Good call.

      Delete
  19. Brych with a very poor judgement of the Mazraoui yellow card situation. Clearly the Lille player kicked him but after that he mislead Brych by crawling on the floor. Very poor judgement of a situation in front of his eyes. Referees need to stop doing this and making decisions based on how players react instead of the action itself. Use your eyes, not your ears please.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Excellent performance from team Turpin so far, especially AR1 with two very tight and correct decisions.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Another great and very close call by AR1 to allow 1-0 for Barca. So far, Danos' performance is clearly above average.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Penalty to Prague by Marciniak and VAR Gil.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Penalty given in Prague right after Inter scored for 2-0.
    So now its 1-1.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Goal for Milano changed into a penalty for Praha. Correct decision if you ask me.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. But one should work on the procedure. Play should have already been stopped in the midfield to prevent situations like this one.

      Delete
    2. Should absolutely not be stopped before the ball is dead. What if Marciniak stopped play for VAR and then decided it's not a penalty? Then he would have stopped Inter from scoring.

      Delete
    3. IFAB protocol gives the VAR this opportunity if the ball is not in 'dangerous areas' in order to prevent exactly what happened here. Of course, it must be an incident that would very likely lead into an OFR. Football does not want to see goals being changed into penalties. Should be prevented.

      Delete
    4. Crucial mistake by Marciniak. That was a clear dive by Olayinka. Can't believe how even elite referees manage to effect games in such a way that it is 1-1 instead of 0-2 even with VAR. UEFA should wake up and do everything to increase the level immediately. Every round crucial mistakes are being made and the worst of all is the incompetent VAR refs are making it worse.

      Delete
    5. A dive? I think we saw a different match.

      Delete
    6. Just take a closer look please. Olayinka is known for going to the ground very easily. He waited for De Vrij's leg and fel over it. No penalty and definitely not something to disallow a 100% Inter goal for. People are tired of seeing these amateuristic mistakes effecting games over and over. You referee guys are way too eufemistic. The level of referees is very worrying.

      Delete
  25. Big things in Prague.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Missed penalty in Leipzig if you ask me. Clear push by Benfica defender. No VAR intervention.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes. Missed VAR intervention as Gil Manzano had no chance to see the push from his position. Should have been evaluated as 'missed incident'.

      Delete
    2. What minute of the match was this?

      Delete
  27. Missed penalty for Leipzig?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Penalty indeed!

    ReplyDelete
  29. 45' penalty appeal by Liverpool, I think that PLAY ON is at least supportable, however penalty wouldn't have been a mistake there, absolutely correct NO VAR intervention, there was a certain attitude by attacker to wait and get this contact

    ReplyDelete
  30. Turpin hit in the face by the ball, which then started a promising attack. Stops play and correctly restarts with a drop ball.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Unfortunately many people (including the reporter of the tv where I watch) think game would be stopped because Turpin felt dizzy and not because there‘s the new rule that obligates a dropped ball because a promising attack was generated due to the touch by Turpin

      Delete
  31. Hot game now in Liverpool, with a YC to Klopp. Del Cerro is trying to manage fouls without bookings. We will see the second half.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I feel the frustrations were caused by Del Cerro not allowing a quick free kick not for the first time. Certainly a different style of officiating than Premier League sides are used too.

      Delete
    2. Sorry I'm not watching the game but doesn't it seem a bit redundant to manage fouls without cards if you are then forced to YC the coach?

      Delete
    3. I think Klopp was complaining about the free kick execution stopped by del Cerro Grande, not because of missing YC. Ancelotti made it a bit cleverer, he was also complaining earlier about something, but without big shouting and gestures, way less aggressive than Klopp, therefore he only was warned by del Cerro Grande.

He could have sorted out the one or other YC after a foul, but nothing mandatory until now. He remained calm and wasn't impressed by the crowd, I don't fear that he loses control.

      Delete
  32. Spanish referees have the biggest problems today. A missed penalty for Leipzig and a missed free kick for Liverpool, which resulted in a Napoli goal.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There wasnt any foul for Liverpool before Napoli goal.

  33. Messi correctly booked for diving by Turpin

    1. Turpin and team incredibly good so far. Let‘s hope they can go on like this!

  34. Great decision in my eyes. Well spotted by the frenchman!

  36. I m not keen on for Turpin but today he is in top, nice ;)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Good game for Marciniak in First half

    ReplyDelete
  38. It is not easy to book Messi for dive. Only big men can do that.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Funny fact, the last yellow card Messi received was on 10 April 2018 vs AS Roma, referee: Clément Turpin

      Delete
  39. Not the first time that Turpin shows a very convincing performance. Incredible development if we think only few years back. He became a real top referee.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Excellent onside decision by AR1 Mark Borsch in Lille before 0:2.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Incredible FIFA style by Carlos del Cerro Grande!

Absolutely afraid to shown cards to any of the teams.
Clear shirt pullings, tactical fouls and verbal warnings only for players complaining why there opponent's don't become a card...

    ReplyDelete
  42. 1-1 by Liverpool and quite similar situation to 0-1 with a possible foul, referee is absolutely consistent and NO VAR intervention is fully correct. However, the style used by del Cerro Grande is the one described by Ref545. He doesn't want to book players...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To be honest I was afraid that VAR would intervene. He correctly did not do so. Del Cerro Grande had a clear, unobstructed view and therefore a perception of the incident. Play on is supportable.

      Delete
  43. 4th goal for Salzburg was disallowed and I have no idea why. Very weird situation.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Disallowed goal for Salzburg. No visible reasons for that yet. No offside, no visible foul. To be rewatched.

    ReplyDelete
  45. This is official reason from UEFA:

    75'
Haaland (Salzburg) concedes a free-kick for a foul on Dewaest (Genk).

Haaland shows great strength to hold off Lucumí after being found by Ulmer's long ball from the half-way line. He finishes past Coucke at the near post but it doesn't count.

    VAR CONFIRMED.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Here was an off-the-ball holding by a Salzburg attacker at the right side of the penalty area. The defender could not have prevented the goal anyway, but the holding was undeniable so impossible for VAR to intervene.

  46. What a mistakes tonight by several referees and VAR's. Rosetti will not be happy. Only a few Elite referees are faultless this season in group stage.

  47. Goal for Ajax correctly disallowed by VAR. Handball. Difficult to see in real speed as Brych had a zero degree angle. Considering his reaction (he lead the whistle to his mouth) Brych had the feeling there could have been a handball.

  48. Soft penalty+YC for Leipzig. If the penalty is given, one could discuss about a RC for this slight push. 9' additional time is a lot.

  49. Reason for 9 minutes of additional time? ?

    1. Very long injury of the goalkeeper.

    2. Any info about the OFR and possible penalty in Leipzig in 58'?
I read that Gil Manzano didn't change idea. Who did mistake there? Very rare to see an OFR without a changed decision.

    3. German liveticker does not report any OFR in 58'.

    4. Thanks, very likely a wrong info reported on a site. Sorry :)

  50. Another matchday with many key incidents that have to be rewatched:

    Praha-Milano:
    - 35' goal changed into penalty
-90+3' disallowed goal by VAR for offside

    Lille-Ajax
-77' disallowed goal by VAR for handball

    Leipzig-Benfica
    -35' missed penalty for Leipzig?
-88' correct penalty for Leipzig? Correct YC?

    Genk-Salzburg
-76' disallowed goal for Salzburg. No visible reasons. Too early whistle by the referee making a VAR check impossible?

    1. On Genk-Salzburg: Apart from (possible) too early whistle there was an off-ball holding by an attacker.

So this should be the foul. Holding by attacker on defender, both didn't participate at all in the action, you can see them in the early seconds of the video running toward penalty area.
Technically it can be OK, but who whistles that?
It would be very interesting to know committee opinion about this incident.
I rather think this call will not be liked, but you can't blame too much referee.

    3. Phew, that's a debatable call. Of course, no influence on the outcome but I tend to say quite fussy free-kick decision.
