  1. Based on the observer my guess for Chelsea-Barcelona is Kuipers or Skomina.

  6. Big, big controversy in Switzerland!! Today 1st vs. 2nd game was handled by Alain Bieri (UEFA 3rd).
90+5‘ at with a score of 3-2 he gave a penalty after VAR for hands which was correct in my opinion.
Then the Gk saved it only that the penalty was retaken because the goalie was off his line; he was but very slightly...
The second penalty (90+9‘) of course went in so that the score was 3-3 at the end. Post match a coach was dismissed and a lot of chaos went on (in Switzerland that normally stays calm whatever happens ;) )
I will desperately try to get a video, however I don‘t know how to upload one by myself I am sorry

  7. Fenerbahçe – Galatasaray
    Halil Umut Meler (Abdulkadir Bitigen)

18’ Penalty (tripping) to Fenerbahçe given; no sanction
    34’ Penalty (holding) to Galatasaray?
35’ Careless, Reckless or Violent Conduct (kicking), GAL no.36? No sanction
46’ Careless, Reckless [Second YC] or Violent Conduct (striking), GAL no.9? No sanction
    64’ Penalty (holding) to Fenerbahçe?
65’ Fenerbahçe Coach ejected (entering FoP)
68’ Reckless vs. Serious Foul Play, GAL no.15? Yellow Card given
76’ Penalty (tripping) to Galatasaray; no sanction
82’ Red Card (punching?) to FEN no.23; Second Yellow Card (striking) GAL no.10; further sanctions needed?; management of substitution(s) vis-à-vis disciplinary sanctions; management of huge confrontation inc. technical staff
    +100’ Penalty (charging) to Fenerbahçe?

    VAR Interventions:

Overall: extreme challenging game, impossible to succeed for any referee; used cards well to keep the game calm(er), some good talks, warnings with players; foul detection was okay – very tricky in a hot and flowing game to decide whether to be rigorous or not, referee fluctuated a bit which made the players a bit more anxious, but considering everything it was not so bad; my impression was of a referee who had solid soft skills but lacks charisma (á la, say, Davide Massa), okay it is impossible to be accepted in such a game, but I was hoping for more honestly; one good card against mobbing but besides no reaction against that, again of course I understand not chucking cards around for each scene, but he stepped backwards too often and let the players ‘win’; maybe he lost it slightly after 82’, game was fairly calm even after that, but on the whole very good mental strength -> evaluation of the performance rests heavily on the interpretation of the crucial scenes: whether you think VAR should have intervened in some situations or not, impressive that referee did not make any (ultra-)clear mistakes when so much happened; I did not see a future Çakır / Aydınus, though.

      "YANAL'IN KARTI DA DOĞRU"

Ersun Yanal’a gösterilen kırmızı kart doğrudur.

Refereeboss of KNVB Dick van Egmond said a) is no penalty, b) is correct penalty. c) and d) is difficult to intervention for VAR.

    e)
Makkelie said This was not visible to me during the match, Higler said me that the distance is short and the arm is in a natural position. But this is for me punishable and penalty.

  10. J(apanese) League first VAR season start.

The most notable point is the attempt to simultaneously send review video to the stadium screen during OFR.
This is the audience reaction at the first match.
    https://video.twimg.com/ext_tw_video/1230818494800744450/pu/vid/1280x720/3d57NIr2FjDByJD0.mp4

I recognize that on subjective judgment it is not preferable to publish video to audience.
But on this wat everyone at the stadium watching the video at the same time as the referee and can put pressure on the referee's decision with the OFR. Some people already recognize that this one is incredibly bold and dangerous attempt.

    1. This may be new to observers in Europe but this has been happening in the A-League every since they started using VAR at the very start of the experiment. There is no pressure that I have observed on the referee from the crowd to make a decision. Only by the coaches in the technical area.

  11. CTA-RFEF just confirmed Macron as technical sponsor for referees for the next season after nearly 25 years with Adidas!

Also, the change will affect every category, Velasco Carballo just said that "every Spanish referee, from the young grassroots referee handling 7-a-side kids matches to the FIFA referees will wear the same outfit" (until last year only referees from the 1st three division were using Adidas, grassroots had to wear other brands like Puma and Pony)

    1. Interesting to know that until today there were different kits for referees, with ADIDAS only for top level. Do you know why? As referee association, I think the kit should be the same for all the members.

    2. Short answer: Corruption.

Long answer: In July 2017, Ángel Villar (who had acted as President of RFEF since 1988) was arrested along with his son Gorka Villar and the economic Vice-President of RFEF Juan Padrón (Villar's right hand who plays a crucial role here).

2-3 days after the arrest, the judge issued the decree ordering their provisional detention for missappropriation, improper management, fraud, private corruption, forgery and all that stuff. In that decree, it was revealed that Padrón was making deals with a friend of him (President of a company dedicated to distribution of Puma sportswear before, and Pony after 2010) in which RFEF due to Padrón's influence was paying an enormous amount of money to Padrón's friend in concept of referee kits for grassroots referees which were of very, very poor quality (while professional referees were using the Adidas kits as it was the technical sponsor of RFEF). That money was at the end of the day compensated by other economic favours from the company to Padrón.

    3. In Germany, referees below top levels are also free to buy whatever kits they want.

      Delete
    4. In Australia there is a national referee kit which is BLK then all the state federations have their own separate ones depending on their own sponsorship arrangements.

The article is in German, so maybe you have to translate.

    1. Sources differ regarding the number of matches of Kim Milton Nielsen, but this article claims, that 56 would be the official number.
      Some content of the article:
      - His first CL match in 2008 (Liverpool-PSV) was a replacement, where he had to find a team in short time. [BTW, Mark Borsch was one of the ARs and therefore in Brych's CL team since match 1.] He also didn't have a headset, which was already introduced in CL, but not in Bundesliga
      - the UEFA coach/analyst, who helped with the preparation for Napoli is Cristiano Ciardelli (worked with Marcelo Lippi in the past)
      - Brych tries to use a similar style in Bundesliga and CL
      - this is his last CL season
      - the article claims, he was in all "relevant" stadiums (Maksimir, Zagreb was the last one missing)
      - He has a theory, why he only got one match at the WC 2018, but prefers to remain silent

  13. I red on an other blog that FIFA has released the list of the perspective referees for WC 2022 for all confeferations. Pitana, skomina and cakir are out

    1. The list of perspective referees is the list of the participants for FIFA seminars.
      Posted here:
      http://law5-theref.blogspot.com/2020/01/fifa-seminar-for-elite-referees.html
Today CONMEBOL and CONCACAF have been published. We will update the post soon.
Rather than Pitana (close to retirement, impossible to see him in Qtar), the most interesting choice is that finally FIFA understood (just my opinion) that Roldan is not at WC level.

      Delete
    2. According to Árbitro Internacional (which I guess is the blog you mean), Carlos del Cerro Grande is preselected. If that is true, it opens a lot of questions regarding age retirement in Spain… and why is Mateu Lahoz off the list if the retirement age is pushed back.

IMO, if the age limit is abolished is only because CTA knows that Gil Manzano will not be in a WC if he doesn't improve A LOT in less time than he has needed to improve just a little (if anything at all) so there is del Cerro Grande as a second option (which I actually think is already first, but let's see). There are two options with this: they will push the age limit to, say, 47 (current VAR age limit) for all referees, or they will only allow del Cerro to carry on. Obviously, the second option is very unfair for all other referees involved (Estrada and Mateu in the short term, and all who come after that), so it must be the first, which again brings back the first question about why is Mateu not preselected.

      What do you think, @Quilava?

      Delete
    3. Nonsense unless CTA-RFEF abolishes age limit of 45 because del Cerro Grande would be aged 46 by December 2022. Nevermind, I think he will drop of 2022 WC preliminary list after 2021.

      Delete
    5. However he is already 43 years old so clearly no chances for 2022.

      Delete
    6. Orsato is 45, Del Cerro is 44, Shukralla is 44, Marrufo is 43, but they are pre-selected. Why are you saying that Cunha, at 43, would have no chances due to his age?

  14. Fantastic indirect free kick decision by Brych in 42' for holding the ball and impeding the opponent to play it. Very rare to see that whistled nowadays. Overall, a good first half by German. He decided to whistle only for very blatant fouls, he let play on as long as this was possible. For this reason, he faced some protests, but nothing significant. I remember he had applied a very similar style in Napoli - Liverpool, group stage. Also, he played very often advantage following offside offenses. Let's see whether second half will be more challenging than first or not.

  17. Possible Penalty in London?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, 63th minute, ball touching an arm which is out of the body in a not that natural position. VAR supported play on decision Turpin.

      Delete
    2. Player did play with his hand, but it is clear that player tried to pull his hand toward his body which is IMO clear sign that he tried to avoid the contact between his hand and the ball. IMO correct decision not to whistle a penalty.

      Delete
    3. It's a penalty for me. Yes, he pulls back, but it's too late, because he risked the handball with his arm in that initial position.

      Delete
    4. My opinion is that whenever there are two different opinions in certain situation - whatever referee decided it should be supported. As TV experts in Croatia would say: "He is not wrong, but he would also not be wrong if he whistled it" :)

  18. So far in second half:
49': correct YC for a very reckless tackle by Busquets, Mertens got injured and he had to be replaced.
    54': excellent ONSIDE by AR1 for 1-1
    61': YC for dissent
63': possible YC for reckless tackle not given by Brych, this decision represents the style he is using this evening. I would have liked to see the booking.
65': YC to Messi for reckless tackle on keeper. In this case, rather bad luck by Barça player (not clear intention), but the decision by Brych is OK.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 72': great offside call by AR2, confirmed by VAR, otherwise Brych was ready to whistle penalty. Very good teamwork, everything was clear there and it was noticeable that VAR checked carefully the incident.

      Delete
    2. 82' correct play on by Brych, on a possible penalty situation, it was nothing, Messi made everything by himself going against defender.
83' correct YC to Griezmann for a blatant holding stopping a possible promising attack.

      Delete
    3. It has to be assessed as reckless by Messi. Even though he is clearly trying to play the ball, he completely misses it and fully catches the goalkeeper so a YC is the correct decision.

  19. Now great yellow card by Brych to Messi for studs up tackle on keeper.

First YC for foul and directly another YC for misbehavior.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Excellent 2ndYC for Vidal in one situation. Reckless foul + unsporting behaviour.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Let me say that I'm quite sure that some referees would have given a YC for Vidal and a YC for his opponent in order to have a 'calm match'. Brych has never hesitated to take unpopular decisions. That's for sure one of his strengths.
Congratulations to Brych for his record match.

  23. Excellent performance from Brych tonight.

  24. Two yellow cards in a row for Vidal following some minutes of tension in Naples. I think that originally (87') Brych wouldn't have booked Vidal for a reckless challenge, then the suggestion I think came from AR1. After that Vidal had a head-to-head confrontation with opponent. Then Brych came and booked Vidal first time for the foul, then again for the confrontation with opponent. Also the player from Napoli received YC. I think a good management, thank also to AR1, Brych would have faced troubles by not booking Vidal.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I didn't see replay yet, but I think Brych orignally pulled out his yellow card for the fault, just he didn't have chance to show it, just when the situation calmed down.
But in the end perfect management!
Great decisions by ARs and very good Brych however sometimes he was too lenient but his style worked for the game.
And again no VAR intervention was needed in the game, the whole German team showed how to referee a game perfectly.

      Delete
    2. Let's say that Brych, differently from other referees, has a "phlegmatic" style :) He relies so much on his assistant referees and you will never see him running for issuing a YC. Just make things happen and then come there for punishment :)
However, he gained a big respect. I recognize that. Great and outstanding career.

  25. Brych with a double YC to Vidal in the same play, one for the challenge and another for the "fight" with the napoli player. He did it again after last year's KO at Nacho of Real Madrid if I remember correctly.

    1. Thank you Dutch Ref, as I wrote fior Zwayer incident in OLY - ARS (handball) all these situations with open arms are clear penalty in Italy and there isn't any further reasoning about that. This should have been punished as well. It is interesting to analyze VAR work, they didn't intervene, this in my opinion reflects exacly Rosetti's guidelines. One can still consider that this is a penalty, but committee doesn't want to see VAR there. Only very, very blatant situations like the ones occurred in Aytekin and Karasev game.

      Delete
    2. But what is blatant? For me this handball is so clear that VAR also should intervene here.

      Delete
    3. I agree with you both! Imperatively, I agree with Anonymous' second sentence.

These two scenes fit into a wider discourse about Turpin; I wonder if it is just me that thought (about) this: does he lack courage?

      Delete
    4. In my opinion, this is Grey area. The position of the arm is unnatural, true, but the Player does everything he can to pull his arm Closer to his body once he realizes the ball coming his way. Penalty could have been whistled, probably this is even the better option, but since there are arguments for both options: no stuff for VAR!

      Delete
    5. Regarding VAR intervention, it is also important, whether Turpin has seen the handball himself - and we don't know that.
If he has, VAR should not intervene, I think.
But if he hasn't, then it is a missed incident and a VAR intervention would make sense here IMO.

      Delete

    6. I really liked Turpen yesterday! Despite the missed yellow card and minor points ... But I believe that a penalty was missed 100%! Var had to intervene ...

      Delete
  31. Great management by Brych! I watched the game of Turpin and was convinced. Missed a few possible (if not mandatory) YCs, but the players accepted this approach. Turpin was very alert and made a fit and agile impression. Good decision to book Jorginho for dissent. No penalty was okay for me, a „grey area“ handball in my eyes. Unfortunately he needed the VAR to send Alonso off, but it was hard to spot because at first sight it seemed less harmful and the action took place a few metres away from the ball.

Overall good match and strong performance!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Both were good performances by the refereeing teams tonight. A red card in each game both correct with VAR helping Turpin with his. Special mention to Brych and his team who made some superb calls. A quite brilliant performance from them, showing why Brych is still one of UEFA's top, top referees.
