  1. Belarusian Cup
    Semifinal Return Legs

Šachcior Salihorsk - Dynama Brest, Dzianis Ščarbakoŭ
66’ Penalty (tripping) given to Šachcior

Overall: despite a nearly epic comeback by Šachcior, the game wasn’t so challenging as it might have been; overall good / fine performance with an unimpressed, relaxed referee who aroused the players respect; referee didn’t pick up on a problem player, Šachcior no.77 – having committed three fouls in the 1H that, if not reckless, presented some threat to his control he should have been cautioned after a tactical non-SPA foul at 67’, this was also tactically valuable considering the game dynamic had changed rapidly then; Šachcior no.77 also instigated a contretemps in additional time of the 2H, for which he and a Dynama player were correctly cautioned; potential stamping incident at 68’, rather an accident; correctly rejected penalty (charging) appeal at 65’; poor dropped ball management at 5’; even if they don’t present a threat to control, better to at least speak to players after probably reckless tackles (8’) when advantage is played -> even if Ščarbakoŭ didn’t present the most preventative performance, the respect he aroused from the players was certainly enough to see him through this interesting game, no bigger problems.

BATE Barysaŭ - Slavija Mazyr, Siarhiej Sciacuryn
+91’ Penalty vs. attacking freekick (holding) to Slavija + Yellow Card (SPA)

Overall: first sixty minutes were tough physically, the last thirty regarding decisions; game was very well refereed; one missed caution (6’ – simulation, referee allowed the game to continue) the seven given were all correct, it was probably better to caution BATE player for late LoR foul, Slavija used the advantage to attack promisingly; well-used advantage / delayed whistle to help a flowing game at the start, by the end referee used quick whistles / cards well in order to ensure control; great fitness shown in a physically challenging game, evident at +91’ for the game’s crucial call (with a goal Slavija would progress) -> every time I watch Sciacuryn it becomes more of a shame that he will almost definitely never receive a FIFA badge – very good performance in this top game - he is UEFA’s loss!

    3. Why the surprise? Is this not in line with the new norm in "modern" international football officiating? Be overly lenient and always under-punish, right? Where the enforcement of the Laws of the Game become more of an afterthought. Smiles, incessant hand gestures and time wasting chats with players are what are supposed to get you through a match trouble free.

      Delete
    5. Why benito archundia Mexican referee did not referee wc 2010 final ?

      Delete
    6. Archundia was viewed as the better referee in the eyes of the Ref Comm because of his more player friendly and forgiving style. Me personally, I prefer Ramos Rizo's more authoritarian, strict and by the book style.

In regards to the 2010 WC Final. I don't really have an answer for you as to why Archundia was overlooked. But I guarantee it would not have been the carnage that Webb allowed it to become.

    8. Yes, somebody else posted that comment previously. I don't see what Spain has to do with Mexico. That would prohibit him from working the match. But it's one of the many "head scratching" decisions provided to us by the FIFA Ref Comm

      Delete
    12. Rizo was an excellent referee in 2000-2002, but his on-field performances were not matched off the field, where, as Sheriff mentioned in another post, he was caught talking very bad about his colleagues, besides the match-fixing allegations that were not proven but destroyed his credibility and his career. A top referee should be a role model both on and off the field.

Kassai and Archundia were referees who imposed themselves on the field through their personality rather than technical decisions in isolated situations. Archundia also missed a red card in his first match in South Africa (Italy-Paraguay), but FIFA trusted his abilities to manage challenging games. In 2010, Archundia and Webb were kept for the final. At that time, it was known among the referees in South Africa that Webb will get the final with Spain, while Archundia was considered for a final with Uruguay.

    1. 100% a Red Card
I personally don't like that he took so long to show the card though.
      1) It makes it seem as if he had doubts initially and only made up his after seeing the player.
      2) It didn't happen here. But the teammates of the injured player could have immediately reacted in an aggressive or violent manner towards the offender after the foul. Getting to the spot of the incident quickly and immediately showing the Red Card would bring a calming sensation to the teammates of the injured player.

      Delete
    2. Correct decision but very weak and insecure body language, repeatedly checking the injur of player before issuing red card. A decision like this must come natural from a referee after such incident. As observer, I would say that Rumšas should believe more in himself.

      Delete
    3. Yep. I wonder if Rumsas would have acted the same if the challenge had happened in the first minutes of the game or in minute 80 with a draw in the score. I hope not, because then he would have faced lots of pressure by players and would be very difficult to sell the decision. You can afford acting like that in the video situation because the score is already 3-0.

    1. 100% Red Card. Bravo to this referee!
That is truly a horrible horror tackle. As a professional, the player he should feel ashamed of himself for endangering a fellow players physical well being in that manner.

Just to play devils advocate. Would this tackle be 100% of the time a Red Card in other parts of the world? Genuinely curious.

      Delete
    2. In Spain I think it would be 100% RC. If not spotted live, after VAR review.

      Delete
    3. To add to my previous comment. I must applaud the amazing level fitness shown by Tatiana Guzmán Alguera. It's the 62nd minute of the match. A match that is being played on an artificial pitch under hot and humid Nicaraguan conditions. Yet she was in the best possible position to spot the foul and correctly evaluate the serious danger of the tackle.

      Delete
    4. Full agree with you both, especially about Guzmán's positioning: textbook! She handled the final of the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualification competition so I wonder if we can expect her at WWC 2023 (reason I posted the clip).

By the way the games in Nicaragua are all streamed on YouTube, and present quite an interesting way of playing football (more interesting for refereeing than in Belarus, in my opinion) and the 2L of the league final is coming up in the next days, though well past my bedtime ;)

To answer the question posed by "Modern < By the Book" - at least in UEFA, where quite a lot of SFP tackles have been subject to revisionism, there clearly is no desire to stop ejecting players who so clearly endanger the safety of their opponents by making ridiculous 'tackles' or rather attacks. If any (con)federation started recommending anything other than a Red Card in such situations - though I really don't see the scope for that happening - it would be time to find another hobby :)

      Delete
    5. I think Guzman is a great candidate for the next WWC. The only thing that may keep her out is her being from Nicaragua. With other "bigger" nations (Mexico, Canada, USA) within CONCACAF having great candidates also. And of course Melissa Borjas Pastrana.

Thanks to you posting the video clip, I was made aware of the fact that Nicaragua was streaming their matches on YouTube. Thanks for that Mikael. I will definitely be watching the 2L of the Final. I think that the man in the middle for the 2L will be Nitzar Sandoval. As he is currently viewed as the best referee in Nicaragua. Oscar Davila handled the 1L.

    3. Nowhere in the LoTG does it mention continuous forward motion being required. You can feint during the run up, not at the kickpoint. That's all.

  11. Controversial moment from the 1st Leg of the Nicaraguan Final. The tying goal is scored immediately after "intentional handling" by an attacking player. The referee is Oscar Davila. The goal stood and the match ended 1-1. Nicaragua, much like it's fellow Central American nations. Does not have the financial means to utilize VAR.

    1. As for Italy, let's remember, one of the most affected countries, there is still a big discussion and disagreement between the parts. Today there has been a very important meeting in which a new protocol has been discussed. The previous one has been refused by Ministry of Health. I think serie A will be resumed but still a certain time is needed.
I praise Germany for having taken a very strong decision, they will go on even in case of new cases of players affected by virus, and, if you ask me, this is the only solution at moment because we can't ensure to avoid new cases. Before the discovery of a possible vaccine, the situation will be always the same, so in my opinion football must go on.

One of the most selfish, entitled, delusional, self centered and heartless comments I have ever read on this site. Get over yourself and your rein in your lust for football to resume. Football players are no better than any other human being facing this unprecedented health crisis. Tests should not be made available to pro athletes if they're unavailable to the general public. Your lack of empathy, your willingness and your eagerness to have people willing to endanger their well being solely for the means to entertain you is morbid and grotesque.

    9. He expressed his opinion and I expressed my rebuttal to his opinion. Did I possibly express myself with excessive aggressive verbiage? Sure. But we are all living through an unprecedented worldwide medical catastrophe. Sacrifices have been made by many and will need to be made by many more. As lives continue to be affected and the body count continues to rise on a daily basis. I understand and accept that there are more pressing matters than football.

Frustrated? Pal, my only frustration lies with all those who continue to minimize the severity of our current global situation. Which is why I applaud the decisions made by the Netherlands and France.

    10. Two pieces of information from Germany:
      - There are more than enough test capacities at the moment, so the players and referees don't take it away from anyone. Furthermore the clubs are paying for the tests, so no costs for the state or insurances
      - In case of positive tests, the local authorities can still order quarantine for the team, so that matches and training become impossible. Indeed, this already happened with Dynamo Dresden, so their next matches will be postponed. Therefore, I assume it won't be possible to end the season at the end of June.

Dzmitryj Dolia - Jaŭhien Pranovič, Aliaksiej Jackievič - Jaŭhien Sakaloŭski

15:00 FK Viciebsk - Šachcior Salihorsk
Siarhiej Sciacuryn - Andrej Hierasimuk, Siarhiej Kasaviec - Andrej Mininkoŭ

17:00 FK Smaliavičy - BATE Barysaŭ
Andrej Vasilievič - Dzianis Jemiaĺjančykaŭ, Anton Palujanaŭ - Siarhiej Klimašeŭski

19:00 Dynama Minsk - Dynama Brest
Amin Kurhchieli - Andrej Hiecikaŭ, Viktar Hiecikaŭ - Voĺha Ciareška

-> If the restarts all happen on time (thanks Forlan for that more-or-less exhaustive list) then the matches in Belarus will gradually lose focus. Three things at this point should be said.

Firstly, I have been very grateful for these matches in the last eight weeks, and certainly these days would have been much 'harder' for me without them. I hope that all protagonists - players, match officials, coaches and spectators - have and will continue to remain healthy. For that - thank you!

Secondly, I would like to criticise the appointments procedure of the ABFF. Referees who make mistakes (Kuĺbakoŭ, Ščarbakoŭ in the last matchday) are just appointed again, referees are given no rest weeks, men such as Sciacuryn are ignored for the big games, talented FIFA referees Šymusik and Dzmitryjeŭ are very under-used, while non-talented Kurhchieli - no, it is not enough just to be a great athlete! (though one can hardly blame ABFF when Gil Manzano gets a CL KO début) - is always appointed for the top game without fail, including very sonorous game this Sunday.

All that true, but overall I have been overall impressed by the officiating in the games that I watched. In Viktar Šymusik and Dzmitryj Dzmitryjeŭ they have two talented new FIFA referees; Siarhiej Sciacuryn is a top class, international-level, referee and the non-FIFA referees, the 'top' ones (Ščarbakoŭ, Cynkievič, Sievascjanik) and others (Dolia, Čystoŭ and indeed Sciacuryn) have generally left a good impression in their games. If anything the two referees who have disappointed me are the two highest rated ones: Aliaksiej Kuĺbakoŭ and Amin Kurhchieli. That shouldn't take away from the overall satisfying level of the refereeing that I've seen: well done to the ABFF for developing a high-level of officiating (and a UEFA Elite referee, huge achievement for them).

Kim Jong-hyeok, candidate for WC 2018, was out for nearly two years (inc. missing Russia, where he might have attended as a support official) with "serious health issues" - does anyone know more? Of the two Koreans that attended Asian Cup 2019 and could be considered 'top': Ko Hyung-jin handles a game on Sunday, no inset for Kim Dong-jin. FIFA-listed Kim Woo-sung handles the opening game [aforementioned Kim Jong-hyeok as VAR].
